Level Up! sees longer life for Ragnarok

Three years after it first went online, the phenomenal rise of multiplayer game Ragnarok has remained the most played online game in the Philippines with 4.5 million people having played it so far.

For game distributor Level-Up!, Ragnarok will continue to be the company’s veritable cash cow in the coming years despite being challenged by newer and graphically better games.

Even as Level-Up! introduced the more serious game RF Online, the company is betting that the longevity of Ragnarok would come from its massive community of subscribers, many of which have formed organically independent communities that were virtual representations of real-world communities.

Ragnarok, developed by Korean game company Gravity, can be played using low personal computer hardware and connection specifications and on an ordinary dial-up line. This made it applicable to a local market wherein Internet penetration was less than 10 percent of the population and dial-up was still the most predominant method to connect to the Internet.

There are stories of friends from different provinces who kept in touch by playing Ragnarok, parents who used the game to bond with their children and even couples who met playing the game, got a virtual wedding but eventually became real couples.

Unfortunately, Ragnarok was the first to have reports of keylogging incidents, real-money trading and bots.

Level-Up Chief Operating Officer Sheila Paul said the first-to-market strategy worked for Ragnarok, especially when there were no competitors to introduce alternative games.

Because it was the second game in the Philippines (the first was Level-Up!’s Ozworld) to feature community development, Paul said it quickly grew its subscriber base until it reached today’s figures of 4.5 million players.

“It’s this community that made Ragnarok survive this long, especially when there are a lot of other online games being launched by other companies that look visually better. But a game’s success is how the players use their time online,” Paul said.

By comparison, players in Level-Up’s new game RF Online, spend an average 150 hours per month but Ragnarok players spend just over 40 hours per month.

However, Paul said Ragnarok would continue to be their flagship game especially since they are recording just about 40,000 new registrations for the game every month.

“Gravity is still working on several new patches that will expand the game’s worlds, with new items and monsters. It’ll also have other community-based activities that will make players to keep coming back. Ragnarok has a lot of stuff to show and there’s no letting up just yet,” Paul said.

they just have to hunt the bots or altogether wipe them out by a secure and effective anti-bot patch; surely lots of players would be coming back, if that's the case :drinks:

Asaness. Huwag pabola sa mga taong noon pa wala ng credibilidad. Market strategy yan .

Ito magandang balita:

Nag load ako ng 100 last Wednesday. Try ko mag log-in hindi ako maka connect. Nag file na ako ng ticket pero sabi nila sa connection ko lang daw. Pero ito ang pinakamaganda sa lahat. "Sorry but your game time has expired. Do you want to purchase more Level Up! Prepaid Cards?" Wtf hindi pa nga ako nakasimula na expire na. I didn't bother reporting it na. I'm done with Ragnarok. I wish someone's gonna buy my stuff their in Php.

yah dami babalik PERO MAS MADAMI NAMAN MAWAWALA, its a goodthing malilinis ang game pero kung UTAK LUG papaganahin mas favorable ang wag mag ban ng accounts kasi by doing that mababawasan ang income uunti players malulugi sila.. think about it

mass carriers = instant win
IMO, its another publicity thing by LU, after the rumors of the merger was confirmed, I really find trusting press material "distrusting"

However, they they will hold TRUE to whatever they said in that press release, maybe ragnarok will be worth while again.

Seriously now, if you have a dayjob or school and yet have 5 level 99 characters PS: transcendants, what would that make you?

with the new additions masasabi ko pa din masaya pa mag ragna. bio lab is definite a new challenge to overcome. kasi dati everyone has reached the point where he can be a boastful bastard na kesyo walang makakatalong monster sa kanya maski boss pa. now i dare those people to visit the biolab and strut their self righteous asses infront of the "normal" monster inside it! :good:
