This forum is for fans of S.E. Hinton's novel (and film and TV show) "The Outsiders." Our board name comes from the filming location of the Curtis house used in the movie.

Protecting her intellectual property rights is more important than the reviews and kudos from the fandom -- it was never about the reviews, anyway, but about sharing her enthusasim and enjoyment of the fandom. She has precious little, if any, left, so there is no point in keeping it up. I am very excited about the project she and I are working on now. It will be our best work, but we will be looking for a literary agent. She and I have progressed to the point where we want to create our own worlds. I think a lot of people have noticed our work straying further and further outside the limitations of the fandom, anyway. In addition, if we do find literary representation, we would have to scrub our presence from the fandom anyway. She's just doing it a little earlier. PS -- Oh, zevie, I didn't forget the promise I made to give you a treat. Unfortunately, characterization and plotting keep getting in the fucking way. Edited by Artemis, Jul 15 2009, 07:26 PM.

I think she may be putting stuff up on an f-lock LJ entry (so it's private), but am not 100 percent sure. And really, she doesn't feel like she's part of the fandom anymore. It's really sad, but all the bullshit on the board has stressed her out and she doesn't feel comfortable posting here or participating in fandom anymore. She's just going to focus on the movie she's working on right now, and revisit this later and see if her feelings have changed. I hope they have.

This excessive stifling of free expression due to copyright paranoia is one reason why I dislike lawyers. As I understand it some lawyers say to chop fics because they're technically unauthorized derivative works and they don't want to get near that can of worms with a published author. Others apparently have this notion that fics, because they're not covered under copyright (and technically the stuff isn't since the right to create derivative works, unless specifically assigned by the author, rests with the author), can be nicked off by someone else and republished as allegedly original material and the fic author would have no legal recourse. (This reason was actually cited to me by one author who chopped a great fic she had, much to my dismay) casts a jaundiced eye over the waters of copyright in general
