Sweet Potato Sunset is one of the best Dallas/OFC fics I've ever read.

* Dallas is not a mushball nor is he a raging prick who you can't believe anyone would like. He has a rough charm and is not Lord of the Smex, but comes off as attractive in a "diamond in the rough" way.
* Sylvia is not shunted off to the side, nor is she a slut or a shrew. She's a troubled girl who avoids the pitfalls of emoness and becomes someone you sympathize with, if not neccessary root for.
* Susie, the OFC, isn't super tough, doesn't automatically understand the greaser/Soc conflict without being told nor is so stupid it must be explained to her as if she's an infant, isn't drop-dead gorgeous or a superslut. She's a girl with a crush. We've all been there.
* Two-Bit is a tragi-comic philsopher. The guy knows the score and will tell you ... only hidden in a wisecrack. Probably, hands down, the best-written Two-Bit ever.
* Soda sheds his Greek God Come to Earth mantle. Thank you, Baby Jesus.

Basically, Susie, a nice, yet ordinary girl, is visiting her cousins, the Curtises. She has a lingering girlhood crush on one Dallas Winston, and she is determined to do just about anything to get him -- even befriending his girlfriend Sylvia so she can figure out what makes their relationship tick and what sort of girl Dallas is attracted to.

This is my Two-Bit rec. I will do recs on other characters later. Right now, I've got to clean the bathroom.
Go, then; there are other worlds than these.

If, at his counsel, I should turn aside into that ominous tract which, all agree, hides the Dark Tower.
Yet acquiescingly I did turn as he pointed: neither pride nor hope rekindling at the end descried, so much as gladness that some end might be.

My favourite part of the fic is that Soda is seen through Susie's eyes as this totally annoying presence lol. No one ever thinks his happy-go-lucky attitude might translate into "annoyingly picks on cousin/girls" lol.

Haha, I actually just read the update and am suddenly happy. I was so happy, I made myself close ff.net so I wouldn't read any Mary Sue's by accident, because then I wouldn't be happy anymore.

If you haven't read it yet, go!

l.l What a fantastic story. There is no Mary-Sueness that makes me want to puke my guts out and all the characters are wonderfuly written.

Miz Midori is no fun at all, what with her restricted reviews!

But seriously, I've been waiting for a long time to start reading this, yet somehow the "I'll read it when I'm done with the next project/when my next test is over" excuses piled up and kept pushing it farther down the line. Now that winter break has finally arrived, I'm almost thankful for the year's worth of backlog that will keep me occupied for many happy chapters. I could heap on the praise as many others have before me, but they've already described some of S.P.S's qualities so well!

A few specific things I enjoy are the quirky little details that still serve the story. For example, the newly painted, fume-y room waiting for Susie when she arrives. It stood out to me as a funny thing I wouldn't normally find in a "OFC Curtis Comes To Town" fic. Yet it's just the sort of unexpected inconvenience you might encounter in real life; it makes Susie's experience more real, and it also says something about the Curtis' pride and odd hospitality. That's just one of many endearing details that elevate this fic above most others in the genre.

So zevie likes to find cliches and things taken for granted, then turn them on their head? I can definitely see it! In the hands of somebody else that could come off too obviously, like a TAKE THAT sledgehammer, but in the few chapters I've read it's been tactfully handled. The wealth of other sister/cousin fics out there actually make this one better, just to see how common themes are averted. Who says that Sodapop has to be universally loved?

I love this story. It's good stories like this that keeps good writers from banging their heads against a brick wall becuase of Mary-Sue over dose.

Please up-date soon. ! .

I have a question.

Why do we call it a Mary-Sue?

And what's a guys term?

Mary Sue was the name of a character in a Star Trek parody story that was published in a fanzine in 1973. It parodied the unrealistic female characters in that fandom. It began being used outside the Star Trek fandom with the advent of the internet.

The guy's term is Marty Stu or Gary Stu (sometimes other names). Mostly people say "Stu'd" about a MS male character, but I tend to call male characters Mary Sues as well.
