The great Caucasus mountains, the Roman Pliny the Elder once wrote of this place in his Natural History and derived its exotic name from the Scythian who called them kroy-khasis or “ice-shining, white with snow.” For man the Western Steppe and the in particular, this greater Caucasus mountains is where greater Asia is divided from Europe. One of the most culturally and linguistically diverse places in all the world, its history is as diverse as its people. Many have called this corner of the world their home and it has been the desire of many a great Empire. The Romans, the Persians, the Turks, and the Russians have, over the course of centuries, fought and spilt blood to claim some or all of the land. During the height of its great power the Russians claim this land as their own. The cultivated its people and plundered its riches in the name of the greater good. When the first Empire fell to those that would see revolution, the lands of the south came under the red banner of the Soviet Union. Far removed from the control of Saint Petersburg, the area of the western Steppe, the great Caucasus manner came under the corrupt control of the Soviets and Moscow. For the people, the great and diverse people, the welcome the change as the promises of equality and prosperity were hard to resist. Eventually however, even the promises of the Soviet Union faded and when the great iron curtain fell, freedom once against came to the Western Steppe. Despite Saint Petersburg's desire to reclaim the steppes after the defeat of the red foe, this did not happen. Instead another state arose, one shrouded in myth and mystery, the state of Kiensland. Today, little is known of what Kiensland was or where it truly came to be. Many people from the southern Caucasus tell tales that the land was a radioactive waste, perhaps the result of Soviet mistakes. However, for many, the stories of the radioactive wastes was just fairy tales, stories told to scare young children and those weak of mind. Chairman Mikhail Khalilov had been told those stories and as a youth he feared that unholy monsters would come from just over the mountains and into his homeland of George and pray on its good people. Yet of course, those monsters never came and now as a man he saw Kiensland for what it was, a failed state. His Dominion of Transcaucasia was growing in power as well as progress. Azerbaijani oil was making the state a lot of money, most of which the Chairman and his government was pocketing for themselves. However, to ensure the illusions of freedom and tranquility for the people, some of the funds had gone to improve infrastructure and make the people happy. Now it was time to make the Chairman happy and just like his hero and muse, Gassel, Khalilov desired land. He'd already conquered Transcaucasia, bringing Azerbaijan, Armenia, and Georgia within his clutches. Now he looked beyond the Caucasus and what lay north. He'd been training his soldiers for months and had his factories worked overtime to churn out the necessary weapons and vehicles for deployment. Everything had now come to fruition. His soldiers were ready, their packs full of ammunition, rations, and other supplies. His tanks and troop transport vehicle stood ready, their trek would be a dangerous one but one they were ready for. He made them ready, his rousing speech on their inevitable victory would fool even the most sound mind that they were poised for victory. Maybe they were, after all no one knew what lay beyond the mountains in the western steppe. Maybe Kiensland had failed, all vestiges of the old order were gone and whatever people remained, would welcome the Dominion troops as liberators. Yet some feared the unknown, feared that maybe something stronger and something more terrible laid in wait. They wouldn't know until they got their and with their glorious leader's orders received, an army from Transcaucasia was now on the move. |

Forces from Transcaucasia were making good progress through the mountains and into the northern Caucasus. Naturally this was their environment so moving troops and supplies came easy to them though that did not undermine the dangers that entailed such a journey. The overall commander of the operation was General Tovmas Isakov, Armenian by birth. The Chairman had placed a great deal of confidence in the general to not only plan the operation but to execute the plan without failure. So far the General's performance was meeting all expectations. Like nations before them, the Dominion of Transcaucasia was attempting to win the hearts and minds of their brothers and sisters of the north. Though politically divided, culturally they still shared enough in common with most to at least hear what these people had to say and offer. Still, at the end of the day no matter how much aide they brought and distributed the fact remained that they came in columns of troops, flanks by tanks. This was an invasion and those brave enough stood up to this group and tried to fight. Yet what is a nest of rebels to an army of soldiers? Though their intentions admirable and their cause was just, unless they could incite the masses there would be no stopping this force. Posted Image While this Dominion stretched its claws over the Caucasus and Steppe, the world was not completely blind. Russia was watching with anticipation and concern. They already believed that the Crimea was occupied by Dominionist terrorists and now a Dominonques government was attempting to stretch its control near their borders. Many in the high command saw this as a threat to their security and advised his imperial majesty of such. Along with the government it was decided that they would react to this threat cautiously, see where this invasion was going. Some believed that the locals would rise up and stop the Dominion forces for Russia while others were more realistic. It was decided to put the military on heighten alert and, if the Dominion threatened Russia borders in the coming days Saint Peterburg would issue an ultimatum. Edited by NRE, Feb 10 2017, 02:36 PM.

Saint Petersburg, Russia... Winter winds ripped through the city, cause everything to stir except for the blankets of snow which covered city lawns and sidewalks. Russian liked the cold though, they thrived on the cold. For them the winters were not bitter, they were not harsh. For them, the winters kept their spirits alive and tough, kept their bodies rugged and sharp. Those that lived in the Vince of the north went about their days as if little changed during the winter. Even within the deepest bowels of government things went on as they always didn't, not slowed or made sluggish by the falling temperatures outside their doors and windows. However, today it seemed a winter storm was approaching not from the north though, no this storm seemed to originate from the south. Posted Image His imperial majesty sat concerned, surrounded not only be key members of his imperial council including the formidable Prime Minister Vladimir Kondakov but also by his key military advisers. On the various screens all around them his imperial majesty was made aware of a growing concern coming from the north. "As your imperial majesty can see, Dominionist forces are making expedient time through the Southern Caucasus and across the steppe. In the last few days they have been pushing north, but yesterday our satellite indicated a decisive change in their direction, they're heading west sir."Chief of the General Staff Mikhail Lebedev confirmed. Posted Image "For Crimea" the Prime Minister stated, his deep voice bellowed like a roll of thunder when he spoke. "No doubt this only confirms our long standing suspicions that the Crimea is being held of by Dominion terrorists." "How have they moved so quickly in such a short amount of time?" Emperor Ivan questioned as he looked over the reports. "Little resistance" Lebedev stated as he continued, "there has been little resistance to the advancing military units coming from the south. What resistance that has surfaced has been insufficient to the numbers coming out of the south. Sir if we don't stop them and they reach the Kerch Strait your majesty Crimea could very well be lost. They would have a direct route of supplies from an established country with much more resources to offer than they have now. They would be better equipped for a longer occupation of the Crimean." Ivan looked over the reports and it was clear to the Prime Minister, a much more decisive man than Ivan, that the Emperor was hesitate to act. Apparently, while the recent attempt on his life had made him a much colder ruler, he was still unsure of when to use the Russian might and when not. No doubt he still feared how prepared the Empire truly was for a war with one or all of its enemies if such things came about. Kondakov however, was not and was more than willing to plunge the Empire into war if it served a greater purpose, if Russia could gain and other's expense. It was his willingness to use Russian might that had influence his decision to already put Russian forces on a heightened alert. Still it was up to the Emperor himself to launch their forces. He knew the Emperor desired a larger Empire, the two had discussed such things before and perhaps the Transcaucasians were given them their perfect avenue. Still, no one could tell a Russian Emperor what to do but Kondakov wouldn't be Prime Minister of Russia if he did not know how to get what he desired. "Your majesty if I may advise" the Prime Minister stated, "let us give out an official warning to the Dominonist in Transcaucasia. We will warn them that entering near the Kerch Straits or any Russian border will be seen as a threat to the national security of the Russian Empire and its protectorate, it will be seen as an act of war. I am sure they wouldn't dare push for war and will either stop where they are or push back." "This seems acceptable" Ivan stated, knowing he had to act. "Release the statement at once Prime Minister." "Of course your majesty, of course." ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Foreign Ministry of the Baltic State issued the following statement: "The Baltic State does not recognize the entity calling itself the Dominion of Transcaucasia. The separation of Georgia from the Russian Empire was illegally effected by the lawless treaty of Guranburg. The Treaty of Guranburg has been rejected and annulled by the nations of the earth, and in particular, by the constitution of the Baltic State." |

The State of Quaon does not take kindly to the invasion of its ally and longtime treaty partner, Kiensland. For decades, the Quaonian navy has leased a naval base on Kienslandish territory. Any molestation of our Black Sea forces will be taken as an act of war. (OOC: There is an ancient thread attesting to the naval base, I will see if I can find it). Edit: Can't find the thread, but here's PM proof, from 11 years ago: http://imgur.com/OAszr16 Edited by Quaon, Feb 10 2017, 08:04 PM.

The Parliament and People of Porcu view the recent territorial acquisitions of the Dominion of Transcaucasia with alarm. The Republic does not recognize claims to the former state of Kiensland by Rustavi and echoes the concern expressed by the Russian government. The Republic stands with Russia and calls for an immediate halt to advancing Transcaucasian forces. |

OOC: let's say Novorossiysk? IC: Press Release from the Office of the President, Mikhail Puchkov In response to unchecked neo-Dominionist agression in the Caucuses, the President has ordered the immediate redeployment of Quaonian forces from the Drax protectorate to Novorossiysk. To best prepare the city and its environs from the threat of neo-Dominionist incursion, the civilian government has been temporarily suspended in favor of direct military administration. Likewise, the Black Sea fleet has been placed on high alert. Quaon shall not fire the first shot against the neo-Dominionists, but we shall defend with the utmost vigor the liberty of the City of Novorossiysk and our rights, confirmed in ancient treaty, to make use of the port unmolested. The Transcaucasian forces bypassed Novorossiysk though they did come close enough to look at the Quaonian defenses. They were impressive, but then again the installation in the city was old. Before the Georgian War itself, decades ago and if they were going to drive out the Quaonians it would take much more than the ground forces they'd brought into the area. Instead, the leadership back home decided to take a gamble and move around Novorossiysk with the idea that the Quaonians wouldn't move unless provoked. They couldn't have their mission jeopardized prematurely when there was very much at stake. Within the day they had entered a region nearest the Kerch Straits. Posted Image Chairman Khalilov needed to get to the Kerch Straits and secure them along with the territory between them and the borders of the Transcaucasia. He wasn't sure if the Russian or Quaonians had noticed yet, but the territory his forces were securing while wide in scope was deliberate. It was the hide the fact that a second force, a smaller force was securing vital rail-lines between Transcaucasia's northern borders and lines that led to the Kerch Straits. In Georgia alone dozens of trains packed to the roof with weapons and other supplies for war were ready to make their way to their final destination, ports near the Crimean. This would allow Transcaucasia to supply Crimea, their Dominion allies, with a more healthier supply route than what they are currently using with cargo ships alone. It would mean that the Crimean forces would be able to resist the Russians for far longer than they would with just the single line of supplies that the two groups had now. The Chairman knew the Russians would be trouble, they would undoubtedly send forces as soon as Crimea was in spitting distance and a war would break out. However, he also knew that if a war did break out that would but the Quaonians military installation in equal trouble. If the Russians move into the region without consultation it could provoke problems between the two states and Transcaucasia could exploit this fracture to get what they want. He order his foreign minister to issue an official statement in response to the current international disagreement with their movements.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Russian command informed the Emperor and the rest of his government of the latest movements of the Dominion forces. They had now made it to the Kerch Straits despite Russia's own warnings not to do so. His majesty, Emperor Ivan knew Russia had to respond but he took council from his government on the appropriate course of action. Prime Minister Kondakov directed the Emperor towards the most swift approach. Send forces into the region immediately, beat back the Dominion forces at all cost, and bottle them back into Transcaucasia. However, despite Ivan's own desires which matched that of his Prime Minister, he also knew caution was necessary. After all, the Quaonians were naturally involved given their port and if anything were to damage Russian Quaon's relations then it could not only jeopardize the current situation but also that in Draxis. Quaon and Russia were long-time neighbors in Europe and there was a time when relations were superb between the two nations, the word ally was easily given by both sides. However, an perhaps Russia was more to blame than she was willing to admit, those relations had been strained. There was resistance to working with the Quaonians in Russia, they were after all once Communists and despite working with a former Emperor in Russia most could not shake there distaste for communists. Ivan believe though, that the time to improve relations was necessary especially since the Quaon state was no longer communists. "We need to discuss the situation with the Quaon government" Ivan stated plainly. "Have our forces put on high alert, coordinate deployments with our Drax allies along their border. I doubt the Crimeans will work with us, so that will have to do. Also have our black sea ships launched and put on the ready but no attacks are to be authorized without my word." The Emperor turned to his Foreign Minister. "Minister Larionov make contact with the Quaon embassy here in Saint Petersburg. See if you can meet with the Ambassador to discuss our intention in this matter. At the very least we want the Quaonians assurances they'll leave the matter to us unless they wish to intercede as well." "Prime Minister, I will leave it in your capable hands to ensure preparations are taken care of" Ivan stated before rising from his chair, his staff doing so as well as he left the room. It was only an hour later that an official call was made from the Russian Foreign Ministry to the Quaon embassy in Saint Petersburg, requesting the Quaonian Ambassador's presence at the Foreign Minister's office. |

Near Taman, Taman Peninsula... Transcaucasian forces had reached their destination and began securing the ports along the Taman bay coast in order to begin shipping the weapons towards the Crimean. Already there was word that the first trans were on their way. It was a laborious task to secure enough boats and ferries for the task but locals could put up little resistance. It wasn't until Taman that the soldiers should their true colors. Those higher up that were privy to the plan all along began handing out orders very different than what they'd previously been told to do days prior. Originally soldiers were asked to hand out food, medical supplies and the like all in an effort to win hearts and minds as they say. Now soldiers were told to take what was needed from the people of Taman and the surrounding communities, at any cost. At first simply bullying the local population was enough to get what the army needed but when a few locals resorted to resistance, then things got ugly. At first it started with simply beatings, roughing people up in order to show them who was in charge but then that only agitated the locals more, soldiers were given the clearance to open fire. Most soldiers did as they were told, no questions asked but others questions what was going on, what they were truly doing. It wasn't long however, before they didn't have time to question their orders for they themselves were put on the defensive. Just as Russia had promised, a reprisal for Transcaucasia refusal to turn back came. Russian bombers came to the Taman Peninsula and began shelling military targets along the coast. Anything that floated in the water became a target and was immediately destroyed. Railway junctions and bridges were also hit during the first round of bombing as well, forcing ground commanders to call home for air support, something that had not been necessary until now. They wouldn't be able to arrive in time to stop the first wave of Russian bombers naturally, but they'd be ready for the next which was sure the come. Forces on the ground could only conclude that this attack was the prelude to a ground assault against their positions and began to dig in. |

__________________________________________________________________ Primorsko-Akhtarsk, along the main front... Russia's bombing had been devistating to the advance of the Transcaucasian military. They had targeted not only forward positions and depots but also key rail-line junctions and bridges. The bombing lasted almost two hours of wave after wave until night began to fall and it seemed as if the Russians had simply run out of bombs. In truth, as a gentle breeze began to move in and disperse the smell of the smoke and dead Russian soldiers began to rain down onto the port city of Primorsko-Akhtarsk. Night was their ally as the men came down upon the city, striking almost instantly against the weak defenses of the small group of Transcaucasians in the city. The men were apart of an advance invasion by the Russian Empire, believing they could take a beachhead against the enemy and use it to put them on a two front war. Posted Image By the time day came the Russians had done just that, they had taken the city and pushed back the enemy. It was the first real victory against the enemy in this emerging war. At the same time both Russians and Drax soldiers were winning against Tauric soldiers in the Crimean, pushing them towards the Taman Pennisula and towards their Transcaucasian allies. It was Russia's goal to put Transcaucasia on a two front war, attack both from the north as well as west. They would be aided by Russia's navy in the black sea, currently being used to shell Crimean targets but was now getting orders to attack targets closer to Transcaucasia. The paratroopers in Primorsko-Akhtarsk were, in fact, only a first wave attack. A much larger force was being assembled along the border in the north and was on the march, a march that would take them along the coast and eventually link them with Primorsko-Akhtarsk. The Dominionists were now in trouble. |

A week into the War, at the city of Sochi... Posted Image This war against terrorists and warmongers was now into a week and there was much to show for it in the eyes of the Russian Empire. What the Russian soldiers left behind on their long march towards the Caucasus was plums of smoke and ash. The Transcaucasian forces had fought bravely to their own right but at the end, theirs was not enough to stand against the powerful and unstoppable bear of the north. The advance was slow in the first few days as the Russians fanned across the Caucasus, taking territory before that of the Transcaucasians. Yet while the air was bitter and a smell of death seemed to permeate the area with great ferocity, there was great good being done. The Russians had discovered almost immediately the ills brought on by the Transcaucasian forces. They'd seen the piles of the dead left from their treating forces, been told by wittiness and victims of the rape and the pillaging that had taken place. To the people of the Caucasus, the racing lines of the Russian forces were liberators at least from the immediate threat of the Transcaucasians who wished to take so much while giving so very little. So far the Transcaucaisns forces had been pushed back, in some instances it seemed fleeing back towards the mountains, their precious wall that they believed would protect them. The Crimean, cut off from their allies were crushed and at home the Drax were celebrating an early victory against their foe. With the Crimean liberated, they themselves were out of the immediate threat and danger against the terrorist who only so quickly had stuck against them and their own government. Yet, they continued to support their Russian brethren with supplies and people to finish what it seems they themselves had started. In truth their continued sport was a calculated and political move from the cunning Russian Prime Minister. So long as they continued to support Russia utterly in all these matters then the Russian Emperor had his validity to continue to push against what many in Russia were now calling the rogue state of Transcaucasia. It was this term that seemed to empower the national spirit against Transcaucasia, giving his majesty and his imperial government overwhelming support for the endeavor which they seemed to exert so much passion towards. Russian forces forward command was made a Sochi, the coastal town that seemed to be their most forward position against their enemy. So far the Russians had not yet made any true move against the positions of their enemy in the mountains. With their positions among the higher road, it would mean with great certainty that the Russians would endure heavy causalities. Even so, Russian generals were sure they could the necessary passages and hold them in order to invade Georgia and make way towards the Dominion's capital at Rustavi. However, despite their continued overwhelming confidence in their own actions, they were stayed by the powers that be back in Saint Petersburg. The projected causalities were simply too high for them it seemed or they had designs on another error of attack, of this the Generals were simply unsure. Back in Saint Petersburg it seemed the governments apprehension to order the assault was not out of fear of causalities, though they acknowledged the projected numbers were high. No, instead there something else which weighed heavily on the minds of those in power. It was new intelligence reports from the rogue state itself that there was a growing force against the government well within its own walls. The Dominion leadership had broken the people it seemed and some where now brave enough to act. Saint Petersburg seemed eager now to see what would come of this new turn of events that they believed would be unfolding only too soon. __________________________________________________________________________ Rustavi, Transcaucasia... Those same reports that seemed to stay the hand of the Russian Emperor from invading were starting to put cracks within the iron fist that Mikhail Khalilov wielded in Transcaucasia. Once a man of charisma and charm, so much so that he was able to woo a union of nations to follow him, was now not the same man. The campaign he'd put so much faith into was now seemingly lost. His allies in the Crimean were either dead or captured, his forces were now retreating within the mountains or holding precarious lines of defenses that his top advisers admitted could fail quite rapidly if pressed upon by the enemy. Paranoia was also setting in, he was believing rumors and seeing enemies everywhere. Protests from left-wing underground organizations he believed he'd stamped out were now causing problems in the far provinces. His decisions were being questioned in hushed whispers among his subordinates, those individuals he himself had given power to in Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan. Even his control in parliament seemed to be slipping, even though he held most through understandings of secrets that most members dare not see come to light in the public eye. The chains with which he bound so many to his unstoppable will now seemed to be rusting, fading. Now it seemed yet another blow to Khalilov power was coming to a head even has he grappled to hold on to everything he'd worked so hard to obtain. The man himself hadn't been seen in public in days, rare for someone who made it a point to always been seen as a reassurance to the people who was in power. He only a few days prior, at the onset of Russia military involvement in his campaign, reached out to the parliament and requested (in actuality demanded) more funds. It was only the next day that he learned most of parliaments members had taken an impromptu recess and left the capital for their own provinces. It seems it was their way to protest the Chairman, something a month before they'd not dared but now seemed embolden with bravery to do. However, it was only this very night that Khalilov would be delivered unto him insult as well as injury. It was over the evening news, though the state media quickly attempted to spin the matter as a protest of little importance it was clear that it was anything but such a thing. Members of the Georgian caucus within parliament had gather in Tbilisi and unifying called for a recall of the Chairman in his office. "We demand that open elections be held so that the right of the people and democracy can return to this land. That we may have a coalition of governments here and not a Dominion, held trough fear and tyranny. Until such time as this is made a reality, the state of Georgia shall consider itself sovereign and separate from the illegitimate government of the Dominion." The faces of the politicians were stoic, unmoved by any fear if any was felt by them at all. The announcement came at the cheer of the crowd gather and at the salute of a militia that the Georgians had seemed to have formed. They were those that had braved the battlefield in the north, deserting their posts there to return and join a cause to free their people. With their announcement the final dye, it seemed, had been caste against the Chairman. Undoubtedly any support he could try and gain internationally to keep the Russians from invading was fading. No doubt the Georgians would appeal to Russia and negotiate their territorial surrender to keep them from being violently invaded. Khalilov assumed the bastardly Armenians would follow suit but was comforted by the thought that his fellow Azerbaijani would resist to the very end. He spent the rest of the night planning, not of course without displaying some instance of a fit of rage directly after watching the news cast. He swore upon pain of death that no one in his immediate cabinet would betray him as the Georgians had done. After which he announced that the government would be abandoning the capital of Rustavi to a more suitable location in Azerbaijan, the city Ganja where he managed a summer estate that could easily serve their purposes. They would leave first thing in the morning as he demanded, instructing them to work tirelessly throughout the rest of the night to gather everything to take with them. NEWS JINGLE Live from studio 7D, in the RBBC Tower in the Moscow International Business District, this is Russian Nightly News.... Posted Image Good evening everyone, I am Nikita Kulikova and here are our top stories from around the Russian Empire and the world.... Posted Image Our top story tonight takes us to the former territory of the Russian Empire, Georgia. Once a prospering possession of the Imperial Crown, the territory situated just south of the Caucasus mountains has endured a turbulent history since Russian governance was forced out by then Middle Eastern powers. Most recently the territory has been under the jurisdiction of the Dominion of Transcaucasia, a Neo-Dominionist government whose recent activities led to the death of the East Drax Chairman, Alexander Doroshenko. In response to such blatant terrorism Russian forces have been deployed to drive back an expanding Transcaucasia out of the Western Steppe. Tonight it seems we see the first cracks in the otherwise authoritarian and totalitarian leadership of Transcaucasia as Russian troops were welcomed into Georgia by the de-facto Georgia leadership. For more on this story we have our special correspondent in the Georgian capital of Tbilisi, Sergei Glushkov.
In response to Georgia's calls for free and fair elections in Transcaucasia other nations have joined Russian in condemning the Dominion and calling for its termination. The Federation of United African Nations released this statement from its Foreign Secretariat, stating:
It is unclear tonight whether the Russian Imperial Government has reached out to the Federation Government on behalf of Georgia. When we come back from break we'll take a look at the closing numbers from the Saint Petersburg Stock exchange..... ________________________________________________________________________________________________________

The sunlight crept sleepily across the Azerbaijani landscape, barely breaking the slumber of night. Most of the country side seemed picturesque and silent as the fauna was not yet up nor the people of the villages and the cities. Only the sound of cars broke the almost deafening silence of the land as they raced across the almost deserted highway. The city of Ganja was now only hours away and as the Chairman Mikhail Khalilov looked out the window, he almost broke from his half-faced smirk and began to laugh. His amusement came from the land itself, his own homeland and that of generations of his forefathers. The humor was in the irony, the pure irony that it should be this place that he return to, Azerbaijan. His native land was, after all, where it had all started. Where Mikhail had murder his predecessor and used the man's own plans at a coup to promote his own rise to power. It was the Military Republic for which had given him so much, culture and policies he'd tried to instill in all of Transcaucasia. Not only that but Khalilov had also ensured that many Azerbaijani had been promoted through the ranks of the Dominion's military. To learn that some of his military units were now defect hurt as it would a father whose son had betrayed him. The convoy had been on the road since before the dawn had broken, that which Khalilov and his cabinet members could not carry, they burned. Instead much of the government buildings left behind in Rustavi were set ablaze before they had left. The chairman would leave nothing for the Russians or any numbers of traitors could use against him. He wasn't entirely surprised the Georgians had betrayed him, yet it was still a personal insult. They had always been vocally displeased with all the integration he'd been doing with the Dominion. The centralization of power seemed to displease them despite the fact that he allowed Rustavi to remain the capital. That was over though as Khalilov vowed to have the capital moved after the Russians had been dealt with. That was his biggest concern as the invasion of Transcaucasia seemed immanent though from their last transmission, though still loyal to the government along the front lines had indicated the Russians had all but stopped in their advance. A line seemed to be drawn in the sand now and it was only a matter of time before one side or the other cross it, Khalilov intended for it to be him. A large reserve forces had been allowed to be maintained by the Military Republic of Azerbaijan though by law, none of the member states of the Dominion were allowed to maintain a national army. Everything, by law, was suppose to be donated to the Dominion military for the mutual defense of all. Khalilov was a forward planner though and so he allowed the Azerbaijani to keep a small force in secret but could only be activated and command by the Chairman himself. In short it was to be used as Khalilov's own personal army and the Chairman would use it for just that. With their help he'd rally his own loyal unit towards a surprise offensive against the Russians. Already the Chairman was formulating his strategies as he could see the maps in his mind. He knew from the last reports roughly where everything was in terms of troops stationed, both his and his enemies. Sitting back in his seat he played out scenario after scenario until he was pleased with a perfect planned, something he'd done often times before to the disgruntlement of his Generals. It was only when he felt his own car begin to slow that his concentration was broken and in a discouraged toned he demanded to know why they were slowing down. Ahead of his convoy was a road block, several Azerbaijani military vehicles and even a few tanks were flanking the road ahead of them, standing was a small delegation of military officers and government officials, including Yuli Shushinski the Azerbaijani leader. Khalilov grinned as he got out of the car and walked over to the group. "Shushinski, my friend, it has been too long" the Chairman stated as he embraced the Generalissimo. "Chairman Khalilov indeed" said Shusinski as he stood back. "This is certainly not the occasion I had hoped to see you next." Nor I my friend, nor I" stated the Chairman. "Still, I am relieved that I have made home. There is much to do and I am confident that here of all places is where we can turn the tide of this war with the Russians. I want you to go back to Baku and have the Azerbaijani military activated, I will be going to my place in Ganja where the government will be established...." Khalilov looked at Shushinski and the at the others in the group as he spoke. Their expressions were stoic and unmoved, he knew something was amiss. Still he did not move, perhaps this was his mistake. "I am sorry Chairman but I have no other choice" the Generalissimo stated as he turned and motioned to his soldiers. Khalilov could not react soon enough as the soldier surrounded him, their guns raised. Khalilov grinned and then stretched his arms out in front of him so they could put the handcuffs on. "I must admit out of everyone I could have ever assumed would betray me, I will admit openly I did not believe it would be you." "Admittedly I wouldn't have thought it'd be me either Chairman but these are different times. The Russians will overwhelm us all if we do not turn you over to them. If your life saves our independence then so be it. After all, the Georgians simply want an election and I am sure we can shape it to ensure the Azerbaijan remains on top. If it is any conciliation, I am placing you under house arrest in Ganja until I've worked out the terms of your surrender to the Russians. Take him gentlemen but remember to show him some respect, we own him that much." "Trust me Shushinski when I say this will not work out for you in the end" Khalilov stated as they proceeded to lead him to the military truck. "I betray my superior and have become the betrayed, it will be the same for you so mark my words...." At the time Shuskinski gave little attention to the worlds the Khalilov had stated. It wasn't until he was laying on the floor of his office back in Baku several hours latter, dying from the gunshot wound to his chest that they truly echoed with him. Whether it was by some divine providence, act of Fate, or simply pure coincidence Generalissimo Shushinski was betrayed just as he had betrayed his mentor and one-time friend. The underground had struck Baku, the heart of the Azerbaijani military complex which served as the backbone for the Dominion itself. Riots started in the streets, a distraction which had military officials sending most of their security to deal with, leaving government complexes with only minor detachments of security. Their hubris it seemed was to be their downfall as the underground struck quick and without warning, showing its full strength. Men trained to defend the Dominion by Azerbaijani military experts were now using what they'd learn to bring the Azerbaijani dictators down. The people had suffered long under the might of military rule, much longer indeed than had the other two states within Transcaucasia. If anyone deserved freedom and a chance at free elections it would be them. There victory over the Generalissimo and his government alone was cause for celebration but when it was discovered the Chairman Khalilov was under house arrest in Ganja, the true parties began. Now not only would Azerbaijan be given a chance at true freedom, but they could enact their own revenge against Khalilov for the suffering he caused not only his own people but all the people of Transcaucasia. For young soldiers of the rebellion like Valerian who fought this night for the freedom of a foreign land, he was overjoyed the Georgians and Armenians alike would also get their just vindication. NEWS JINGLE Live from studio 7D, in the RBBC Tower in the Moscow International Business District, this is Russian Nightly News.... Posted Image Good evening everyone, I am Nikita Kulikova and here are our top stories from around the Russian Empire and the world.... Posted Image Our top story tonight is Transcaucasia where it seems a two dictatorships have fallen. Russian military officials have confirmed the arrest of Chairman Mikhail Khalilov, the Neo-Dominionist authoritarian who has kept the region within his iron fist for the past few years. I spoke with officials on the ground who told me that Khalilov was found in Ganja, a small town where the former dictator own a private dacha. It appears that Azerbaijani forces had him under house arrest there where officials believed they were going to use him as leverage against the other two states, Georgia and Armenia. However, tonight we are learning that the Military Republic, the long time totalitarian government of Azerbaijan has been toppled as well by a resistance underground working to root our pro-Dominionist factions in the region. We are getting reports that there have been protests and other acts of civil disobedience in the streets. We have also learn that Generalissimo Yuli Shushinski has been killed, his life taken in a fire-fight between pro-government forces and rebels known as the Azerbaijani Liberation Front, attempting to take the Azerbaijani dictator alive. Reports indicate that rebel force has taken Baku the capital, with most former government officials either arrest or dead. It was these same rebels that located former Chairman Khalilov and promptly handed him over to Russian forces invited into Azerbaijan to retrieve him. The Rebels have also request Russian assistance to help maintain peace and security in Azerbaijan until official free elections can be held. These same rebels are also calling on new negotiations to take place between Azerbaijan and the other two former Dominion held states of Georgia and Armenia to determine what their future relationship will be. It terms of the future of Transcaucasia, a press conference was held in Tbilisi where Russian Forces commander, General Anatoly Liapidevsky, spoke about what the immediate future for the region was going to look like.
Officials on the ground are hoping to have elections soon as the infrastructure for elections is already established on most of the states and that with the Dominion government gone, former parties that were official banned from operating and now run free of persecution. We reached out to the His Imperial Majesty's government for a comment. Officially, the Russian Empire is grateful that the Dominion government has been taken down. They realize that Transcaucasia has seen decades of violence and instability but it is their hope that such times are finally over. Russia will provide whatever aid is necessary for the peoples of Transcaucasia and will work with international partners to secure free and fair elections for the Georgian, Armenian, and Azerbaijani people. When we return from our break, we will look at your five day weather forecast so please stay tuned... |

NEWS JINGLE Live from studio 7D, in the RBBC Tower in the Moscow International Business District, this is Russian Nightly News.... Posted Image Good evening everyone, I am Nikita Kulikova and here are our top stories from around the Russian Empire and the world.... Posted Image Tomorrow voters from across the embattled region of Transcaucasia will go to the polls in what can only be described as three historic referendums. In Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijani the citizens will be casting their vote for the future. Millions are expected to participate in the referendums. The event is being monitored and coordinated by the Russian Empire along with other international government organizations such as observers and volunteers from the The Federation Boundaries and Elections Administration, an agency of the Federation of United African Nations. This massive undertaking has been a month in the making with Russian diplomats and government aides working around the clock with local leaders and international volunteers to build the infrastructure necessary to run a safe, fair, and organized vote. "I am personally impressed with the work shown by Russian officials in this matter" one African volunteers is quoted as saying, further stating: "despite our inherit difference of opinion over the particulars of democracies, it seems that we share at least a common understanding of the basics of democracy, basics which appear to be universally understood. I believe that these votes will be free and unbiased, untainted by any foreign obstruction." The votes which will be carried out from 8am tomorrow morning until 9pm tomorrow night will be determining the basic way forward for the countries involved. Each referendum will be asking the people to decide on the basic system of government they wish to see replace the authoritarian Dominion government that have all be ousted from power. This basic question will allow these three nations to move forward and given a chance in the near future to answer the next fundamental question, which is whether or not these three states wish to continue any formal of an alliance between them for purposes of defense and trade. Though each referendum will be asking the people to determine their next system of government, each referendum is unique in what form of government the people can choose from. In Georgia, local Georgian populations will be asked whether they wish to become a constitutional monarchy or a Confederation. The strongest support in Georgia going into the referendum seems to be for a constitutional monarchy. The idea is supported by the Georgians United Conservatives, a pro-monarchist political party. Their platform is one of a prosperous and secure future for Georgia and believe to achieve such a goal the nation needs a political figure that can bring unity and embody the values and beliefs all Georgians. The United Conservatives, lead by Georgian Giorgi Babluani, are running on a policy of creating a monarchy for the region. They propose the recognition of Prince David Bagrationi II, son of Prince George Demetrevich Gruzinsky XIII and Princess Maria Alexandervicha Mukhrani. Almost twenty years of age he is the first true Bagrationi claimant since the last Georgia King. The United Conservatives also argue that the Bagrationi dynasty once brought peace to Georgia as well as political stability, something that Georgia in recent years has been lacking. If chosen, the United Conservatives would advocate for a constitution that would be enshrined with Saint Petersburg parliamentarian system. That is that the new King would have some executive powers including veto power on legislation. Opponents to the idea for a constitutional monarchy are namely the Georgia Social Democratic Labor Party, an off-shoot of the Russian Social Democratic Labor Party. Advocating for more direct democracy for the people and less authoritarian democracy held by a monarchy, the Georgia Trudoviks believe that a confederation would solve Georgia's immediate internal problems far better than a unify figure like a monarch. instead they are advocating for a Confederation to be created which would allow for limited central power and more broad power to the provinces of Georgia. in particular, this Confederation would allow for more autonomy for places like the State of Abkhazia which has long sought more broader self-government power and The Soviet Socialist Republic of Adjara which has long enjoyed a degree of autonomy. In Armenia the vote is not as clear cut as it is in Georgia as both options would allow for democracy in the country. Thus the question that Armenians will be face with is the style of democracy they wish to enjoy. For the Armenian Democratic Socialists the choice is clear, they are calling for the restoration of the first Armenian Republic which was established for a short period during the Russian Civil War before being invaded and conquered by the Soviet Union during their consolidation of the southern regions. It restore a parliamentary republic to Armenia and would allow the Armenian people to begin to once again work towards greater freedoms as well as greater economic prosperity. The party is also advocating the restoration of lost territory, territory taken by both Georgia and Azerbaijan as a restoration of a United Armenia. Though the idea has picked up with many Armenians, in particularly the rural population of Armenians, most also recognize that fact that the only way the Armenian Democratic Socialists could regain lost territory, especially from Georgians and Azerbaijani would be through military actions. This is not a particularly popular prospect for a people who have already suffered several generations of conflict, especially with the Azerbaijani in recent decades. Offering a second option are the Progressives, who are calling on a councilism form of democracy in Armenia as a better option to the seemingly militaristic intentions of the unified republic. The progressives are advocating a system not unlike the early soviet or worker's councils of the early communism movement. A option they say would bring the greatest amount of democracy to the people, the Progressives would setup local government council, all of which would have greater authority than local governments do now. A high council would be create to maintain only the most basic necessity such as trade and defense. Progressives argue that it is the most purest form of socialism yet to be explored seriously in the world and they argue that Armenia could be come a leader of a new revolution in the people show a willingness to try it. Finally, much like in Armenia, in Azerbaijan the question of a new government comes from the style of democracy the Azerbaijani wish to embrace. Unlike in Armenia and Georgia, in Azerbaijan there is a serious question on whether or not the Azerbaijani wish to continue their former government. Though Dominionism has be expunged from Azerbaijani politics, the ideology of the original Military Republic still remains strong among some within Azerbaijani society. Advocating a return to the more pure form of Military Republicanism that the Azerbaijanis once enjoyed is a group of former military officers calling themselves the National Order Front. All retirees that were not serving in the last Azerbaijani government that worked with the ousted Neo-Dominion leadership, these veterans of the Azerbaijani military argue that Azerbaijani succeed in the last decade due to the dedication and hardwork promoted by the former Military Republic. Furthermore they argue that the order maintained by the former military republic is again needed now and can only be re-obtained by the military republic. However, not everyone is buying the argument and this includes the Azerbaijani Muslims Democratic Party. They argue that a return to a military republic would only once again leave Azerbaijan vulnerable to the same corruption which leader military to side and aide with the neo-Dominionist policy that ruined Transcaucasia. Instead they call for free democratic Republic to be created, the second in the history of Azerbaijan. The Republic would advocate a variety of freedoms, some of which would be the first in the Muslim world include university suffrage. Though we have early polls suggesting leads in the various referendum races most experts here in the Russian Empire as well as globally confirm that the races will ultimately be close. More Russian peacekeepers have since been brought into Transcaucasia to ensure a peaceful day of voting for the people of the region given the significance of the votes. Russian leaders close to the referendum are eager to see where Georgians, Armenians, and Azerbaijan will vote to take themselves but ultimately hope that no matter the outcome of the votes, that this will mark a new chapter in the history of the region. Sincerely, it is hoped that a new era of peace will emerge from this vote, peace for a region that has seen so much violence. Though the referendum does not start until tomorrow already we are told local and Russian officials are also looking towards the future, planning for the next serious referendum which again will determine what level of political association the three new states will have, if any. OOC: Polls are up at the top of the page, please feel free to vote on what you'd like to see happen as I will more or less base the future of these states off of what it voted. OOC: So I've deleted a few post of my that I've made in an attempt recon some of this story. I didn't like the way it developed and have decided to take it in a slightly different direction. Hopefully this will also leave room for others who may be interested in joining in when the opportunities present themselves. IC: Posted Image Kalinin Kola....cause sometimes water sucks..... NEWS JINGLE Live from studio 7D, in the RBBC Tower in the Moscow International Business District, this is Russian Nightly News.... Posted Image Good evening everyone, I am Nikita Kulikova and here are our top stories from around the Russian Empire and the world.... Posted Image Two states have been decided, one remains in political limbo. That was the outcome of the referendums being held in Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan as citizens headed to the polls to decide their future. In Georgia the most definitive choice was made as vote counts the day after the referendum made the people's choice clear, they wanted to restore the monarchy. Monarchists around Georgia rejoiced at the news, easily and completely destroying the opposition at the polls with a varsity superior majority.
Many have reached out the Prince David Bagrationi II for a statement over the news in Georgia. Though he has yet to make any official statements or appearances since the referendum sources closest to the Prince say that he respects the wishes of the Georgian people. A homeland to him just as much the people who voted, he is eager to call Georgia home again and if that is in the capacity of the King then he will accept the charge given to him. Russian officials have also commented that Georgian officials have reached out to them since the referendum for help in constructing a constitution, even confirming that there were those who sought to create a similar one to the Fundamental Laws of the Russian Empire. Officially, the government states that they are more than happy to help the Georgia people draft a constitution and welcome the challenge in helping to build a new monarchy in the state of Georgia. While officials are applauding the outcome of the referendum in Georgia, there are concerns over the results in Armenia. According to current referendum data, in a 75% to 25% victory Socialist Councilism has won over the opposition views of creating a parliamentary republic. Leaders of the push for Socialist Councilism in Armenia, including the movements unofficial leader, Valiko Kozintsev, have stated that the vote was a clear sign that the people want something new.
Kozintsev and other progressive leaders are advocating major reforms and institutions similar to the ideas of direct democracy, there is some criticism towards their goals. Furthermore, since the announcement of the referendum results opposition leaders have questioned the validity of the outcome. There are some claims, still being substantiated, of voter fraud in some of the rural regions of Armenian as well as voter intimidation in the urban areas. Valerian Araratov, leader of the Social Democratic-Republican movement, has called for Russian and international observers to re-validate the votes and to look into their claims of voting improprieties. Araratov and others say they are in the process of investigation and gathering the evidence but Kozintsev and Socialist say this is a stalling tactic. "The opposition is trying to distort the natural democratic process in order to cease power from the legitimate winners of the referendum" Kozintsev has stated. "The people of Armenia must resist this propaganda and slander, they must uphold their choice as made through the legitimate vote!" Russian officials have not officially commented on the matters though sources close to the Foreign Ministry have stated that the outcome of the Armenia vote is questionable. In the agreement of anonymity, one source stated: "There are some figures and other information that are questionable in this vote. They are within the margin of error in these things but I think the Socialist aren't telling the whole truth. There are signs that these groups are teetering dangerously close to advocating Soviet-era policies and the Armenian people should be made aware. The Soviet Union cause the Armenians much and I am not necessarily sure, if made known, they'd have voted the way they did in this referendum." Unfortunately for Russian peace-keeping forces in the region, Armenia is not the only troubled spot. In Azerbaijan, early numbers after polls closed showed the two national options presented to the people: Stratocratic-Meritocratic Republicanism and Parliamentary Republicanism, receiving an almost even 50-50 split. While the agencies overseeing the referendum are currently recounting the votes for accuracy, working with international assistance from Russia and elsewhere, local leaders are not sure where to go from here. Analysts from the outside believe that this split could have been caused by any number of reasons with some suggesting that the old Stratocratic-Meritocracy may have received so many votes due to voter intimidation and fear that the Azerbaijani military would turn on the people if voted out of power. Others believe the Parliamentarians simply didn't show enough strength during the campaign to win the case of being a viable choice for a people who are seeking strong stability in their government. While a new referendum may be called, Analysts fear that a similar result may come from a second vote and instead argue that the only way forward now is for one of the two sides to concede. Many however, fear that if the parliamentarians concede to the military that military rule may simply lead Azerbaijan back towards the same direction that most recently almost caused their complete ruin. Instead, Analysts are hopeful that perhaps the recount will provide a clear winner or that a viable third choice my emerge before a second referendum is called. Until such time peace-keeping forces will remain in the region, not only to maintain the peace in Armenia and Azerbaijan, but also to help organize referendums in regions in the north as new states will undoubtedly be emerging in the North Caucasus. |

Stepanakert, Disputed Territory Many though it would be poetic that it should start here, the city of Stepan Shaumian. The more practicals among them simply new that the city was a strategic point, a nice between states. A city tucked away in the rolling mountains of the region, not entirely hard to get to but not entirely easy to take. Russian patrols rolled through the city often though not many were permanently stationed. Most of Russia's peacekeeping troops were stationed in the larger cities, like the capitals of Armenia and Azerbaijan respectively. So it was believed in the match was to be struck anywhere, Stepanakert was as good as anywhere else. Officially, the Russians were still recounting the vote yet with ever day that delayed a new government, the progressives became impatient. They'd won the referendum in their minds and these talks of voting fraud and other dishonesty was propaganda against them, methods being employed by those sympathetic to the Imperials and their cause. Valiko Kozintsev realized that the referendum would only be validated if the Imperials got the government they wanted and his would never been a government the Russians could support. If the will of the people was to be heard, was to be respected, then the people would have be fought for. Posted Image Protests were easy enough to get start in the age of tweets and vines, but to get people to do more than simply wave flags and make signs....now that took art. Kozintsev was a great speaker, his soft tone voice was easy to listen to and his world always thought out and concise. Many believed he could cut a man down to nothing using his words alone, so precise and so accurate like a chef at the butcher's block. He was appealing to the youth of Armenia and Azerbaijan, a generation of people tired of war and unwilling to inherit the mistakes of their forefathers. They wanted change, they wanted progress, and with Kozintsev's help they wanted revolution. They're always a dirt thing, revolutions, because as admirably as they may be in idea the consequences of revolutions aren't always want the people deserve. People were now flooding the streets of Stepanakert, of Baku, and Yerevan too. Cities across the east of the Caucasus and towards the North as well. The youth, a generation who felt lost in a sea of uncertainty had now been pushed out of their complacency and coached into taking what they believed to be rightfully there's. They demanded in Armenia that Russia validate the election results, that the progressives be allowed to form their government, and that peace-keeping troops leave. Naturally, Russia remained silent as these events developed, troops allowing people to amass though there was inherit danger in this. So many were flooding the streets, with so much passion in their hearts and in their minds. Troops were order to maintain the peace, to allow the protesters their right to speak and be heard. They were asked to keep their rallies peaceful, to not damage property or each other. For now that was the unspoken law, the people got to shout and the Russians got to maintain law. However, this was an unholy alliance and one which teetered on a pin hair. On the one side there was revolution, violence to be broken out in every street and every neighborhood. It would mean the streets would run red with the blood of the innocent. On the other, there was peace, prosperity, complacency...something not many were eager to enjoy again. It would take only the slightest of breezed to tip this balance, to through this region either into true peace or into utter chaos. |

NEWS JINGLE Posted Image Live from studio 7D, in the RBBC Tower in the Moscow International Business District, this is breaking news with Russian Nightly News.... Posted Image Good evening everyone, I am Nikita Kulikova and here are our top stories from around the Russian Empire and the world.... Posted Image Good afternoon, we break with your regularly scheduled programming to bring you breaking news out of Transcaucasia. A press conference is being held in Yerevan to discuss the recent referendum held there and reports of voter fraud. Just a short time ago Armenians took to the polls to determine their future and while Communist-leaning group was declared the unofficial winner in the vote, there was almost immediate speculation of voter fraud or tampering. A team of experts from Russia as well as other international groups have been working to determine the authenticity of the vote. We take you live where Lieutenant-General Mikhail Melnikov, operations commander of Russian forces in the region, is speaking with reporters.
Again that was Lieutenant-General Mikhail Melnikov, Russian Operations commander for Russian forces in Transcaucasia speaking on the Armenian referendum. Apparently there has been discovered multiple counts of voter fraud in the referendum, leaving the results invalid. What this means for .......we don't........ Posted Image

Yerevan, Armenia.... The sun glared magnificently in the noon-time sky, beaming down on the steps of the Capital Building of Armenia. A crowd of substantial size had gathered, Russian soldier on guard formed a barrier of human bodies between the people and the podium. Squinting a bit to see his speech before him, Henrik Orkian spoke with a commanding yet reassuring tone. His word rang out among the crowd, echoing off the buildings around and through the various street that it could reach. Around him were many men and woman, some faces more popular and more recognizable than others especially in these trying times. "The people need stability, the people need progress, and so help me God we shall give you that" Henrik stated, a burst of applause emerging from the crowd. His speech was a declaration of sorts, a new Armenian government was forming thanks to the organization and stability Russian peacekeeping forces were providing. Since the referendum was considered void, Henrik as leader of the Democratic-Republicans, had been brought into negotiations by the Russians with other opposition parties. The agreement was to create a coalition government, with representation in a new parliament divided as evenly as possible among the parties. It was not a perfect solution to their problems but it meant that the Armenian state would not remain in limbo and that it could begin the process of reinventing itself. A semi-presidential system was agreed on and Henrik, whose influence with the people was strong, was chosen to act as the first president. The Russians designed to the new government as a mirror to their own St. Petersburg system of democracy. The Armenians were getting a President whose powers weren't unlike Russia's own Emperor except the President had term limits. A more concrete constitution would eventually be required of course, but that was to be left up to the first Assembly to decide. To their credit, Henrik and the other political parties represented in this new government had invited the Socialist and Valiko Kozintsev to the negotiation table. Valiko strongly refused the invitation, which Henrik was quick to point out publicly. Privately he knew Valiko refused because he still believed his government had been chosen by the people. Honestly, Henrik didn't know and the Russians (were they actually guilty of voting manipulation) weren't forthcoming with such information either. He didn't though as Henrik believe it was best he didn't know as it gave him a strong plausible deniability that he could use in the future. What he did care about was building a government for the Armenian people so that they could finally move forward. Completing his speech the people assembled seemed generally receptive on his announcement of the new government. In truth, most in the Armenian capital had voted for Henrik and his vision of a parliamentarian republic as opposed to Valiko and his socialist commune. However, outside the capital the response to the televised speech and later the various newspaper articles on the event were much more mixed. The strongest voice of opposition came from Valiko himself, whose Socialists owned their own newspaper that was being widely distributed. It called the new Armenian Republic illegal and Illegitimate, stating that the people had chosen the socialist path. From his city stronghold of Stepanakert he declared the rightful Armenian government in exile, the Soviet Socialist Republic of Armenia. Unlike its predecessor plague by strong-armed politics, Valiko announced that true to its names the Soviets or Councils of the new Republic would be were the true power lay. Declaring their government in exile was a dangerous move for Valiko and his socialists, especially when they named Stepanakert as their capital. It painted the city with an immediate target but seemingly the Socialist leader didn't care. In fact, Valiko and his socialists were quick to go on the offensive first and new began breaking out of insurgent fighting breaking out in many outlaying cities and villages all around the area near Stepanakert. For Russian High Command, they realized this was an effort by Communist forces to draw their line in the sand, declare their borders of their exiled government. For the Russians they viewed the Communists as terrorists, separatist who were only looking to further destabilize and already fragile region. The biggest concern for the Russians was not how much land the Communists could secure in the first few days of these fighting, but instead how far their influence could spread. Stepanakert was situated strategically between Armenia and Azerbaijan, indeed the territory had traditionally been a point of contest between the two states. Already a good number of Armenians were choosing the fight Russians in the streets. In Azerbaijan, Russians had negotiated a similar agreement with opposing political forces in Baku. A coalition government was to be formed there as well but what Russian feared was that because it was a fragile as the one they were building in Armenia that the Communist may try and pollute that area as well. Bottling this Communist threat up in the Artsakh region was paramount to Russia's success at defeating this disease before it spread. Unfortunately for Russia and the people of Armenia, this was not going to be a traditional war. These insurgencies would not be defeated easily and the occasion for such fighting to spread was more than likely. Soon the Imperials would realize and experience for themselves the problems their Communist brothers of the past experienced in their own Afghan campaigns almost 40 years ago. |

The city of Tskhinvali... It had been three months since the Russian Empire began the task of nation building in the Caucasus region. To date, the only successful nation thus far had been the Kingdom of Georgia whose economy was slowly rebounding, it security forces beginning to take on more and more tasks previously regulated the Russian military forces, and whose government had thus far endured political and economic "stress tests." Unfortunately for Saint Petersburg and, more locally, Lieutenant-General Mikhail Melnikov, this was there only success. Despite declaring the recreation of new governments in Armenian, Azerbaijan, Dagestan, Chechnya, Ingushetia, Ossetia-Alania, Kabardino-Balkar, and Karachay; most of their efforts were weakened by the almost daily political, economic, and terrorist-related attacks which came from left forces. Initially, Russia had planned for a swift defeat of the leftists, including their leader Valiko Kozintsev. They'd declared three months earlier a government-in-exile in Stepanakert in opposition to the Russian supported government for Armenia in its traditional capital. Knowing where they were holding up, Russian forces were dispatched to the city and after almost three weeks of fighting took it. Unfortunately not many of the Socialists leaders were left in the city by the time the Russian's claimed it, including Kozintsev. Gone underground now, they were calling themselves the People's Red Guard and were resorting the guerrilla tactics not only in Armenia but throughout the Caucasus region. With war in Europe and other issues occupying Saint Petersburg's attention, a quick fix was necessary so that further resources weren't need to be expended in the area when they were needed elsewhere. So instructions were set to Russia's Ambassador for the region, Count Boris Fyodorovich Anrep. Having served in the region for years, when diplomatic relations between Russia and the area were finally restored since the Georgian War, Anrep was not an unknown figure. Along with Lieutenant-General Melnikov, the two Russian seniors of the region were tasked with shaping up the political, economic, and defense situation in the region or there'd be consequences. Calling a meeting of leaders from each of the territories, including of course anyone claiming sympathies with the Socialist terrorists, Saint Petersburg's plan was laid out. "Gentlemen the situation in your respective nations is appalling" Anrep stated matter-of-fact like, holding a hand up to quiet any initial remarks before he could finish. "Saint Petersburg has given you three months now to stabilize your governments and economies to ensure viability. Instead you've endured political assassinations, propaganda, and economic distress at the hands of these rebels. Equally disappointing is each of your government's abismal attempts at recruiting bodies for your securities forces. We cannot train me for your government that you do not provide. Clearly, more oversight is necessary to ensure this terrorist threat is dealt with and your nations become strong and stable enough for the free and fair elections you've promised the people." "That is why Saint Petersburg has issued a new structure be developed here in Transcaucasia to ensure these points are met with utter success. Thus, we are as of this hour, beginning the process of transitioning your governments into a new regional government. The Transitional Transcaucasian Authority (TTA) has now have fully political and economic control over the region. It shall be headed by a Governor-General of which, Saint Petersburg has chosen Armenian President Henrik Orkian as he is senior amongst you all politically. A number of cabinet positions will be created to assist the Governor-General in the maintenance of the TTA. Nationally, each nation will be governed by a Governor who will be answerable to the Governor-General, and from there each province shall be run by a Warden." "Saint Petersburg has also drafted speeches, which you will give to your respective people instructing them on this decision" Anrep stated as he concluded his announcement. "This will ensure that such a transition seems like a collective decision by your leaderships. Gentlemen I do regret that this decision had to be made but I can personally assure you it is for the best. While there will be a little 'shuffling' in terms of personnel in various leadership positions, I can assure you that each of you still have a job. Do make sure you stress that this situation is temporary, to the people. They need to know that this is a necessity because of the threat these communist and socialist terrorist present to this region. Once taken care of, the TTA will be dissolved and free an fair elections will be held." Anrep opened the floor, so to speak, to questions but there were very few. Everyone assembled had feared something like this was going to happen for over a month now and that it had finally come to pass was no real surprise. They were also keenly aware that this was the only "chance" any of them were getting from Saint Petersburg to clean up their respective zones on control before the Russian resorted to cleaning house. Perhaps the biggest hotseat to be in was the Governor-Generals and Henrik Orkian now had that pleasure. He, more than anyone else in the room, was now on the clock. If he could find a way to out politic and out meanuevor the Socialists from winning the hearts and minds of the people, he'd been ruined politically. Perhaps even worse than that, the Russians might attempt to eliminate him all together if he wasn't careful. That evening, on state-run TV news shows, radio broadcasts, and in the following days newspapers the announcements were made. Officially, it was claimed that this new authority was created and designed out the necessity of local leaders attempting to stem the tide of anarchy in the region. They didn't mix words when blaming the socialists and communists for the decision and creation of the TTA. They also blamed them on the moratorium on free and fair elections, claiming the terrorists were creating an environment impossible to conduct such processes. Within a week local governments would be transitioned into the new chain of command and the new TTA would be on the clock for results. Edited by NRE, Mar 10 2018, 09:47 AM.

A series of cryptic messages eventually made their way to the leadership of the People's Red Guard, each stating something to the effect that Kozintsev and the peoples of the Transcaucasus had a friend who was willing to provide men and materials in their just fight for socialism. A general, public call to arms would be taken as acceptance of the offer made in the messages. "When we hang the capitalists they will have sold us the rope we use." Ganja, Azerbaijan.. The city of Ganja , once named Elisabethpol (after the wife of Alexander I of Russia) in the Russian Empire period, is Azerbaijan's second largest city with a population. It is an important hub of activity away from Baku where the central government is located. A town with a rich historical past, it had in modern times attempted to reinvent itself into a more modern and metropolitan area. While such a transformation had met with mixed results, it remained strategically important to the authority in Baku and, in return, to the Transitional Transcaucasian Authority which now controlled the region. Located in an important crossroads to the interior of Azerbaijan and close to the American border, in recent months the town of Ganja had become an important staging ground for military activity. The Russian Imperial Army was using the town as both a depot for supplies as well as a staging area for operations inside Armenia where they'd been tasks with flushing out and eradicating the communist terrorists known as the People's Red Guard. So far they'd been unlucky in finding their foe since driving them underground. Various leads had come up as dead ends and even some of the more green soldiers within their ranks wondered if perhaps the entire communist effort had not just fallen apart. Today, soldiers were moving in fresh ammunition supplies to units operating within the Artsakh region of Armenia. Since taking the town of Stepanakert Russian troops had been putting a lot of pressure on the area hoping to flush the final vestiges of communists out of the wood works like the rats they were perceived to be. Naturally, the prize was Valiko Kozintsev himself but finding him was difficult. The supplies this particular convoy was bringing however, would ensure another several weeks of uninterrupted activity for the Russians in the region. Driving along this particular region however, was hazardous given the inclines of the terran but the Russians had so far been fortunate as there had been no activity against them. Today, however, it seemed that all that was about to change. Moving into a particular valley-like pass the convoy's escort, two Russian tanks, were his my rockets fired from the high ground. This was followed by an all out assault by weapons fire from the mountain side above, forcing the Russians to attempt to take cover as best they could. The attack blindsided the Russians who' fallen into a false sense of security which was what the enemy had hoped for. The entire attack took about 30 mins until what was rest of the Russians had surrendered for fear that a continued fire-fight would ignite some of their hazardous cargo and blow them all to kingdom come. Emerging from the shadows was a group small than the entire Russian unit had been, their faces covered by red ski masks or bandanas. The took the Russian soldiers weapons and lined them up along the roadside as they scavenged for what they wanted. They didn't have the manpower to take everything but once they'd picked off what they wanted, their leader then went one by one and shot the Russians in the back of the head, their lifeless bodies falling into the ditch by the road. When reinforcements finally arrived the attackers had long since gone, the truck having been set ablaze and most of them exploded. The only thing the Russians had to go on as clues to the culprits was the spray painted hammer, sickle, and torch on the road itself. Of course, the commander of the reinforcements had figured it'd been a Red Guard attack all along. What would become more surprising to Russian central command was not this isolated attack, but the number of these attacks that would occur just as this one did all across the controlled territory of the TTA. Kozintsev's popularity or influence had grown somehow since falling underground and now it seemed the Russians were dealing with community units in almost every occupied territory save for Georgia, which for now remained firmly in the hands of the collaborative government of the recently installed Georgian Monarchy. For Valiko Kozintsev, he hoped this recent attack confirmed to his mysterious allies, that his movement and efforts were still alive and that help was always welcome. |

On a train to Vanadzor, Armenia... Attacks on weapons shipments into Armenia from Russia had become more frequent in the last month. 15 ships, mostly by truck transport, had been hit by Communist terrorists who then scavenged for what they could carry before destroying the rest. Frustrations were running high among leaders of the Transitional Transcaucasian Authority (TTA), in particular those closest to Governor-General Henrik Orkian. Russia was becoming increasingly hostile towards his office, whom they'd entrusted with the protection of these arms shipments as a public stunt to distance themselves from the region and give the appearance of more "independence." The Governor-General needed these shipments to ensure that he cold properly supply the growing ranks of the TTA Security Force. Created after Russia own downscale of forces from the area, the TTA Security Force or "black hats" (a reference to their all black helmets and uniforms) were civilians rushed into military service. Made mostly of men who wanted to pull themselves out of the poverty of the war-torn and ill-administered countries of the Transcaucasus, they'd join because it was the first real job many of them had been able to get in a long time. Three square meals a day, fresh clothes, a place to sleep, and a pay-check...what more could you want. Sitting on board the supply train as it raced down the tracks, the sounds of it wheels clanking as it pushed towards its destination, most of the men were eager to get there. They knew the assignment was dangerous, they'd already heard the tales of the other shipments already lost to the Communists. Still, a watched pot never boils, so to pass the time some of the men slept, others read, and a few played cards. Seated around a crate armed "bullets" four men sat, one dealing to the others, the game was poker. The chatter between them had been light, most of the men knew little of the others given their unit had only recently been put together. Still, there was a slight sense of comradery among them that was generally felt by all. After all, if the Communists attacked, they were all wearing well-noticed targets on their backs and it would take the entire unit to survive. The dealer checked his watch, "30 mins out by my estimates boys" he stated while scanning his cards. "Good" said another, "I am eager to get this trip over with and get off this train." "Scared the Communists will attack?"the dealer inquired. "If I said I wasn't I'd be lying" the man returned, "hell I doubt any of us is truly ready to die." "Speak for yourself" stated another man, "I've had enough of this place being a shithole. The TTA is promising to put us back together, bring progress. It might be all bullshit in the end but for now the paychecks are clearing the bank and putting food on the table back home. If I have to take a few bullets so be it, its worth fighting for. Of course, I hope to put a few bullets in them too!" "heh" the dealer stated, "I imagine no one here wants to die but we're all willing to for the cause." "I guess" the first man stated, "I mean don't get me wrong I am willing to pull my weight here. I just don't like the thought that the guy out there firing at me might be my neighbor, or a childhood friend you know?" "The Communists can be anyone that's for sure" the dealer stated, jokingly adding "Hell they could be you." "Me" the man stated puzzled, "Why me?" "Why not" the dealer responded, "hell why not me, why not any one of us." "Well can't be me because I cash my paychecks and keep them for myself" the other man stated to which the others laughed for a bit. "I guess I just don't understand why we have to fight in the first place" the first man returned. "I mean I understand, but I don't you know?" "No actually I don't" stated the dealer, the other men at the table equally shook their heads in confusion. "Well I mean like the Communists, they just...I mean they just seem like the rest of us. They want to start over, start fresh, start new you know. Isn't that what we're all doing here anyways, joining the security force to start new. I guess I just don't see why we can just let the Communists have their freedom. Without warning the dealer drew his side-arm pistol, pointing it at the man with a stoic and serious look on his face. "Those seem like traitor words to me how do I know you're not some fucking Communist spy." The other two men around the box backed up a bit and the car fell silent, only the clanking of the wheels and the gentle swaying of the car could be heard of felt. "Hey now" the man stated, beads of sweat beginning to form over his forehead."Just because I can see their argument doesn't me I support their tactics. I mean hell, we tried Communism before a generation or two ago and it didn't work. We starved then like many of us starved before joining. I've got no love loss for those Communists." The dealer scanned the mans face before cutting his eyes to the right and then left of him. The other men seemed convinced enough and so he put his gun down. "Sorry man, I guess I just wanted to make it to the final stop like the rest of us" the dealer said finally. "Its cool man, it's cool" the guy stated. " I don't support the Communists for what they've done, good honest men have died. Alls I am saying is that if they want to hide away in some town and run how they want to run it, I say fuck it and let them. Hell, they've probably starve themselves out of existence anyways." The men let out an audible grunt of approval. "No I get what you're saying now" the dealer stated, "after all under different circumstances these people we call enemies would be nothing more than our neighbors, coworkers, and the like. It's just a shame we have to be so damn different." "Yeah" he replied in agreement. "Although like I said, I guess we aren't as different as you would think. I don't agree, but I imagine the Communists just want to make this place better like the rest of us. Make a home better for our children than the ones our parents left us." "You know it's good to know there are people like you" the dealer stated, looking at his watch. In a moment that took less than a minute, the dealer took out his pistol again, flipped it so that the butt was exposed, and pistol whipped the other man unconscious. When he woke he let out an audible groan, his head was splitting and the room was a bit of a blur. Blinking several times the car came into focus, bodies were all around him. There were bullet holes in the walls of the car and several security service men were dead, he himself appeared to be tied to a larger crate. The door of the car opened and the dealer came back in, a small smile on his face as he walked closer. "Oh good you're alive comrade" he stated, "I was afraid I had hit you too hard." "What...what's going on?" "Well see the people need these weapons more than you blue hats" he stated. "So as the army of the people, the Red Guard have comendeers this train, rerouted it, and have now unloaded a vast majority of its contents. Unfortunately, there were too many of you to let live aside from the conductor and you." "Why me?" "The other side needs more men like you" the dealer stated plainly. "Maybe if more men like you rise up in their ranks, we'll be able to negotiate with people than can see reason and not just the lap dogs of the Russian monarchists. Besides, I saw your hand, you've got a hell of a poker face my friend." "I could say the same." "Heh, yeah I imagine you could. Well anyways, we've driven the train far enough away on our own that we're going to turn you guys loose now. We've let the conductor know you're back here so I imagine once we're far enough away he'll come back and untie you." "You know if I see you again I'll have to kill you" the man stated as the dealer had turned and way almost outside the car. "Yeah I know" the dealer stated, a tone of disappointment in his voice. "We're all going to have to kill people we're going to regret killing before this war is over..... |
