Ordensburg Marienburg, State of the Teutonic Order

Posted Image

Standing along the banks of the river, outside the great fortress of the German Knights, Heinrich von Salza listened to the shouting in the distance. First, raised voices, then gunfire, and screams, and silence. Maybe a hint of weeping in the distance, but Knight-brother Salza was sure that he was imagining that. Not that it mattered - he had seen and heard the weeping before, and likely would again. It had been several months now since the troubles had started, spurred by the spread of Protestantism in the Prussian towns. The leadership of the Order had no patience for this deviation and had suppressed it mercilessly, to the widespread acclaim of Genesian bishops across Europe and South America. The isolation of the Order State helped it avoid scrutiny but kept it insular. Perhaps it was not surprising that the once thriving townsfolk had come to resent the austere knights and their hard religion. Did Protestantism represent doctrinal disagreement, or social and economic unrest? No clear line could be drawn.

But a clear line was drawn - the Hochmeister's line - the line between Genesians and heretics. Heresy was an infestation that needed to be cleared out by any means necessary. Entire villages would be put to the sword, the Hochmeister had threatened, though so far, crowds had dispersed fairly quickly and only a few had been killed. Salza knew that would not last. Already, there were mutterings even in the Order's own barracks, that the policy of repression was un-Christian, that the Order's rule had mismanaged the Prussian economy, that the state must change or die. How long would it be before conflict ceased to be between the Order and the heretics, and became conflict within its own ranks? As the snows began to fall along the Baltic Sea coast, Salza could already see the next battle in his mind's eye. He did not know which side he would be on, but he knew that brothers would stand on both.

OOC: I'm not going to pursue this story. Instead, I am going to stop roleplaying the Baltic State in order to move to a French state. I'm going to finish the ICON investigation RP with NRE, and that will be my last Baltic State RP. TC may continue the Baltic State as he has expressed an interest in doing so.
