Posted Image Finally the day of elections has come, after a very heated electoral campaign. These elections will determine the composition of the Parliament, which will then go on to determine the next political government of Marslava. The parties which are vying for predominance in the country's parliament are the Social-Democrats, the Communist Party, the Liberal Party and the Pan-Slavist Union. 1) Communist Party: the Communist Party comes from an experience of government under the leadership of Nadia Starikova. However, the moderate faction headed by Ms Starikova has been defeated in the last general party congress and has been replaced by a more hardline leadership. The new leadership, whose candidate for premiership is Hermann Slansky, campaigns on a ticket of social reforms, redistribution of wealth and nationalization of private business. 2) Social-Democrats and Liberals: the two parties are running in a coalition, forming what they term a "moderate pole" which is to continue Marslava's current path. The coalition's programme is one of improvement of the country's services and policies to favor small and medium enterprises. The leader of the coalition if Vladislav Clementis, dissident under the rule of the World Military Dominion, and leader of the Democratic Front which ended the undemocratic coup of Lord Slavomir Slavnik. In foreign policy, it is a staunch supporter of the alliance with Porcu and of a peaceful coexistence with Marslava's neighbours. 3) The Panslavist League: a nationalist party based on the notion that the region's slavic peoples will one day be united under the same rule. The Panslavist League supports a more aggressive foreign policy of Marslava, confronting its German neighbours and expanding its influence in the Balkans. It will also be likely to seek closer relations with the largest slavi power: the Russian Empire. The League's is Zvitomir Slavnik, from the powerful aristocratic family of the same name. |

The Social-Democrat and Liberal Alliance forms government with the Pan-Slavist Union The results of the last political elections show a substantial parity of the contendents. The three large political formations, the Communists the Social-Democrats and Liberals, and the Pan-Slavists, have each gathered the 30% of the vote. Thus, no one of the three political formations can aspire to govern on its own. This said, given the inimity between the Communists and the Pan-Slavists, it is up to the Social-Democrats and Liberals to decide the formation of the government accordingly to who they decide to ally with. The Communist Party is now headed by its more extremist and revolutionary faction, which channels the political discontenment of the lower classes, and refuses to form a government with those parties that it considers to be the root of Marslava's problems. In this way, Vladislav Clementis, the head of the Social-Democrats and prime minister in pectore, had to seek the support of its old adversaries - the conservatives of the Pan-Slavist Union, fautors of a strong, conservative state, and of a more aggressive foreign policy. The government comes to be formed by two unlikely partners. The two sides have come to agree on a short list of reforms to make, with the understanding that a new vote will be held in the next year when the most urgent issues will be dealt with. |
