Whaladyan garrisons all across the tiny scarred island nation were placed on high alert following the landing of ICONOY forces. As no official response was directed at the Whaladyan High Command following its request to remain as an assistance force against a possible Confederate assault, all Whaladyan units were ordered to resume military posture and act in self-defense against any aggressor, Porcuian, Kasnyian, or Confederate.

The order was a controversial and difficult one to order, nonetheless properly execute. Many Whaladyan soldiers had been trained using Porcuian economic assistance money, and more still, the Republic (as well as ICON) were viewed as allies fighting for the same thing. Since the landing of Confederate troops, over a quarter of the island remained outside of Whaladyan or Libyan control; emboldening remnants of the Yoloyese nationalist militias to regain minor specks of territory. In effect, with Confederate, Nationalist, Yoloyese military holdouts, Whaladyan/Libyan, and now ICONOY forces operating openly and acting as "legitimate", the small island appeared to be a powder keg waiting to explode. As no actual fighting had commenced yet, the mood was incredibly tense.

All the food and care proved initially by the WLC had been halted in a bid to stave off the Salik (then ICON) blockade and restrictions. For Whaladyan forces who had barely been scrapping by before the arrival of ICONOY, their arrival placed the Emirate's chances at success from precarious to abysmal. While the order to "engage all enemies" remained, in truth, Whaladyan forces were quickly fading away to the point of uselessness. Nonetheless, all 20,000 Whaladyan troops manned their machinegun nests, roadblocks, sniper's nests, and bureaucratic positions. In a last ditch effort a last radio transmission was broadcasted (in poorly translated Latin and German) to ICONOY headquarters from Whaladyan Military Command in Nicosia.

"Attention Porcuian and Kasnyian peacekeepers: Whaladyan forces are not your enemy. We remain inside Yoloys for the same purpose - to create and maintain stability across the island. We ask once again to remain as peacekeepers alongside ICON against the real enemy - Confederate aggression. Please, in good faith, lift your blockade and assist us in our mutual mission. No blood need be shed by either side."

What the Whaladyans would do should their request be denied was anyone's guess..

Gaedic troops opened fire in an incident near an Antonov in Yoloys. It appears Whaladyan troops were mistaken as separatists, in which Gaedic peacekeepers accidentally opened fire.

OOC: This seems unlikely. Whaladyan troops are clearly identifiable and ALL wear uniforms tying them to their country. Additionally, there are no areas currently where ICONOY peacekeepers and Whaladyan forces are intermingling, especially near an airport.

I'm not saying change this, but I think other ICON nations might be reluctant for the consequences when the GCU wasn't even alive when ICON interference was being suggested, and therefore unlikely to have sent peacekeepers.

The official response to the Whaladyan radio communiqué came a few hours after - necessary time for military higher-ups and diplomats to discuss and formulate a clear reply.

The previous radio transmission from Whaladyan Military Command in Nicosia has been received. Whaladyan military assistance is neither required nor sought; article 4 of the 'Resolution for Peacekeeping Operations in Yoloys' clearly states the necessity for the complete removal of Whaladyan military forces from the isle of Cyprus. Failure for Whaladyan forces to comply with the ICON resolution will force the hand of ICONOY, which has been empowered by the Presidium of ICON to use force in carrying out the objectives set out by the resolution. If the Emirate of Al Whaladya wishes to assist in returning peace and stability to Yoloys then her military forces will oversee the transfer of territory to ICONOY forces before their subsequent removal from Cyprus and return home.

For the sake of peace, the Emirate of Al Whaladya is urged to comply.

Very soon afterward similarly worded radio communiqués were drafted and sent to the military commands of Confederate and U.T.L.R. forces operating in Yoloys. Furthermore, elements of the Salik Navy were instructed to abide by the ICON resolution and withdraw from Yoloyese territorial waters.

In Porcu, an expeditionary force was approved by Parliament during an early morning vote - 10,000 soldiers, with a matching supply of weapons, ammunition, foodstuffs, etc., would be transported to Yoloys as soon as possible to begin carrying out the objectives of ICONOY and to provide some real muscle to the peacekeeping force.

Back in Kale Sahir, Chancellor Bash Cumali calmly sat as his desk, alone. It appeared his ambitions in Yoloys would have to wait, and he feared that perhaps he had shown his hand earlier than he should have. He sighed, and picked up the phone.

Inside the palace of Yoloys, a young servant of the Royal family, Khalid al-Roy handed the Tzar a large phone. Khalid had been a fifth column to the confederate cause for some time now, but his usefulness was near its end.

On the other end of the phone the almost monotone voice of Cumali said in no uncertain terms to the Tzar: "We have your son. You will cooperate, or he will die."

Hedeh sat on a chair, in the middle of a large empty board-room, petrified beyond belief. A single tear rolled down his scratched right cheek. Death and all his friends were lurking in the shadows. The shorts the Duke had been wearing when he had been kidnapped, were now tatty. When the cruel man had whisked him away from the safety of the Libyan Palace, his shorts must have been caught on the door of the van the kidnapper had used. Why had he kidnapped?

~~

Chancellor Cumali had to admit that Duke Hedeh was a lot more cuter than he had expected. Hedeh's raven black which was styled in the "shaggy mop top" look, had made the boy appear younger than he was. His height didn't help as well - this kid was short! Anyway, keeping the young Imperial hostage is going to be fun.

~~

"MY SON! WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO HIM!" roared Tsar Azil.
"I haven't done anything yet-"
"Don't you dare to touch him or I'll,"
"Azil, I've got to admit - you Yoloysese royal's have good-lucking kids,"
"You sicken me, give me my son back now!"
"Or what? I'll torture the little shit if you don't keep quiet,"
"You won't-"
"Listen, I'm a nice guy - but here is what I propose will happen - listen carefully or else I might give Hedeh a nice new haircut"

The sinister voice laughed in victory.

"Firstly, you will expel all non-Confederate forces from the island, and allow my armies the exclusive right to mandate and enforce law. Secondly, you will allow my forces to garrison and base on your island, including the Confederate Navy. Yoloys will remain sovereign and under your reign, and you will allow our soldiers and officers to rest and vacation there. Understood?"

"There is a war coming soon, Tzar. I hope you choose the correct side." Cumali turned his attention back to the boy. He indeed was a very attractive young man.

"Tell me, Tzar Azil, is the prince still a virgin?" Azil's face turned pale. "If you don't comply, perhaps I could remedy that personally before I kill him." Cumali slammed the young Duke's head on the table and held him against the cold wood. "Tell your father how much you miss him, boy."

"Dad please, don't let him - don't let him!" pleaded Hedeh in his native Yoloyese tongue. Chancellor Cumali smiled in delight. The plan was going along nicely. If this island nation came under Confederate influence, then so would the rest of the Middle East. So keeping the Imperial Family in power would be in the best of interests. Especially if it meant keeping the Duke hostage for a little while longer.
"Come on child, if you want to go home tell him," said Chancellor Cumali maliciously.
"Dad, I miss you and please tell Huzan and everyone else I miss them as well and tell Granny Una that I'll promise to help more with the housework and tell Auntie Rojye, Ida and Lanya that I'm sorry if I were ever rude to them. And, and, and tell my other Granny I love her and tell Huzan it wasn't his fault-" the eleven year old Duke was practically on the verge of crying.
Bash Cumali was loving this.

~~

Tsar Azil stood stone-faced and felt slightly nauseous. How the hell did Cumali - the monster of the Middle East - manage to get his hands on his son? How did Shayran manage to let that happen? The only way to save his son, was to sacrifice his country to the rules of the Confederate. As he listened to the sickening pleas of his youngest son, Tsar Azil made a decision.

"Hedeh give the phone to Mr Cumali," calmly asked Tsar Azil.
"Yes Tsar?" laughed Cumali.
"I agree to your demands, just don't hurt him-"
"Oh, I won't - why would I hurt a beautiful face like his? Besides, your son is going to come in useful for me later"

By this time, Tsar Azil collapsed onto the floor of his office.

~~

Huzan stormed into the office of the Sultan. Anger mixed in with worry and defeat was plastered on his face.

"Where the hell is my brother? Mr Sultan, where the hell is he?"

The teenage Duke flipped over a table in utter annoyance.

Why was nobody answering him?

OOC: Hope I'm not extremely late to the party, I thought I'd voiced the Federation's pledge of men and ships to this expedition in the Yoloys ICON thread but apparently I didn't.

IC:

With an official landing of Porcuian marines and with the great Kasnyian battleship not far from shore, the Federation's own dispatch of ships was a bit late to the party. A small battle-group of Federation ships, headed by the carrier UFS Ethiopia came sailing in with the flag of the Federation lowered and replaced by that of the hurriedly designed unofficial flag of ICON. The battle-group not only escorted transport ships carrying 15,000 Federation soldiers but also watched over the first of many H.E.A.R.T ships to begin entering the area, each ship's hull packed with precious food freshly harvested, prepared, and packaged from the Federation itself.

Admiral Nassef Sawiris was the commanding officer of the battle group, and he forward a message to ICONOY command informing them of the Federation rather late arrival, as well as the fact that they brought a great deal of humanitarian aide. Troops were also ready to land and if need be, Federation aircraft could join the legendary Porcuian air force if assistance in that area was necessary.

The official response from ICONOY forces hit the senior Whaladyan commanders inside Yoloys like a brick. Not only were Whaladyan forces deemed "unnecessary", but they would also have to endure the humiliating gesture of transferring power to ICONOY forces personally. As a creeping fear began to sweep across the Whaladyan Regional Command inside Nicosia, the soldiers on the ground continued their duties as if their situation hadn't drastically changed. What was left of the supplies were rationed, road-blocks continued being constructed, weapon's were cleaned and oiled, and patrol duties continued unabated by any of the opposing forces.

Back home in Al Whaladya proper, the Whaladyan High Command was reeling about what to do inside Yoloys. In fact, the consensus was split into three different camps. First, the ardent "warhawks" were opposed to any form of withdrawal and even suggested resisting ICONOY forces until they were brought to see reason. Then there were the moderates who desired a limited and slow withdrawal from the island, but refused to pull out all at once. Last, the anti-war coalitions who had argued for a complete withdrawal since the occupation went sour. Interestingly, all three camps were split into even matched sectors with no clear advantage in numbers. It would take a senior decision from the Defense Minister or the Emir to break the deadlock. Considering the Emir's condition, the decision fell to the Defense Minister.

Omar al-Whaladya's decision was simple - Whaladyan forces were going nowhere until the job was done. ICON be damned, any moves to subvert Whaladyan efforts would be met with harsh and unflinching armed resistance. All Whalayan commanders were ordered, under pain of court-marshal, not to surrender an inch.

When the order was regretfully and reluctantly ordered to Nicosia, the regional commanders were disgusted. Disgusted, but not surprised. Whaladyan strength on the island was held together by a string. Supplies were down 200% their daily rationing, only 35% of vehicles remained operational, and over 3,000 Whaladyan troops were showing signs of severe dysentery. In effect, an emaciated, sickly, desperate force of about 17,000 undersupplied Whaladyans stood in the way of ICONOY, Confederate, and Yoloyese forces. It was a miracle that no one besides a few ragtag groups of nationalist militias had attacked Whaladyan forces since the arrival of Confederate and ICONOY forces. In theory, opposing forces could wait a couple of more weeks before the blockade and supply shortages stifled the Whaladyan forces into an unconditional surrender.

Regretfully, this was not to be. After several days of waiting for Whaladyan forces to withdraw from the tiny coastal city of Kyrenia, a contingent of joint Porcuian and Austrian (hilariously) peacekeepers marched within the city limits with orders to "relieve" the city's defenders. As ICONOY forces approached, Whaladyan commanders were so reluctant to open fire they radioed to Dayr-az-Zawr directly for confirmation. The unfortunate colonel in control of the bridge defenses where ICONOY forces were crossing pleaded with his countrymen to reconsider an armed response. He was told unflinchingly - FIRE. With teary eyes, the colonel ordered his men to fire at the blue-helmeted Porcuian and Austrian peacekeepers. The results were stunning.

Not. a. shot. was. fired.

As a matter of fact, not a shot was fired PERIOD. Not for the entire day. Kyrenia was taken peacefully with a shocking display of human emotion and civility. Whaladyan forces threw down their weapons eagerly, approaching the Europeans with tears and pleading for some food and water. One Porcuian soldier was horrified to find a Whaladyan soldier carrying a dying little girl towards him and pleading with him in Arabic to save her life. In a matter of minutes, whole droves of civilians hobbled out of their homes and clung to the peacekeepers for food. What had the blockage been doing to this part of the country?

Kyrenia would provide a small, yet hopeful beacon of light in the darkness that was occupied Yoloys. If the rest of the "liberation" was like this tiny coast city, then ICONOY had its work cut out for it. Sadly, Kyrenia would not be every city inside occupied Yoloys. At least 35% of Whaladyan garrisons would offer up a feeble, but tenacious armed resistance. The dichotomy inside the Whaladyan Regional Command was throwing the Emirate's forces into disarray. A small and brutal civil war was unfolding as Whaladyans fought Whaladyans in garrisons all over the country.

For Yoloys, the road to recovery would be long indeed.

Saleha paced up and the down the entire length of her small bedroom, worried about the love of her life - Tarik. With rumours circulating about the eventual defeat of the Whaladyan Army, fear had gotten the better of thus once hopeful Psychology student. At twenty-four, she full well knew the stigma attached to marrying the enemy. Especially if the enemy was a Shia! But, after much consideration and deliberation with herself and members of her family - mostly her father and sister and brother-in-law - Saleha decided on her fate. She was going to make sure that Tarik will stay by her side - for the time Allah had willed them to be together for - and she would rather die than see him be forgotten. Whilst glancing out of her bedroom window, through the net curtains, she saw her soldier coming towards the cafe. It was no or never. With courage and eith bravery, Saleha Aswat ran out of the comfort of her home, right past her mother and father, past her sister and past the curious people in the cafe and out onto to the cold streets, where Tarik stood with open arms.

OOC: Hey Whal, you may have made a mistake in your last post. Kyrenia is on the opposite side of the island from where Porcuian and Kasynian troops first disembarked. However, due to the blockade underway by ICON as perhaps forces were sent around to the other side of Cyprus. I was a little confused is all, so I'd like to take a moment to clarify what's going on.

IC:

The acting commander for Porcuian forces currently operating in and around the island of Cyprus was Vice Admiral Marcus Junius Brutus Calpus. A young man of impeccable bloodline, the blonde Junius Brutus Calpus had previously been serving as the second-in-command for Porcuian forces defending the province of Mons Calpe, or Gibraltar as it was commonly known. Despite the pristine beaches and wondrous landscape, Gibraltar had been a prison. The then Rear Admiral had nearly been unable to contain his joy at receiving orders to join the Kasynian superbattleship the IKS Zorlin and sail directly for Yoloys. The attached promotion was welcome, but not the primary reason for his sudden happiness and energy.

The small contingent of Marines aboard the ships of the Porcuian carrier group disembarked outside of Episkopi before proceeding to liberate the town. Advance shipments of medical aid, food, and other goods such as blankets were distributed amongst the Yoloyese in and around Episkopi in the days after, all the while Porcuian engineers proceeded to erect a temporary HQ. It wasn't much, but it would be able to handle all the communications that would - and did - begin to arrive soon after.

Case and point: the arrival of Porcuian, F.U.A.N, and Austrian reinforcements. Within the course of a week the island nation of Yoloys was suddenly flooded with international peacekeepers, all flying the colors of ICON and all wearing the blue helmets representing solidarity. Vice Admiral Junius Brutus Calpus directed Federation soldiers and humanitarian supplies to the south, while the Porcuian and Austrian forces were directed to the north.

The coastal city of Lampousa was taken peacefully, as soon were the neighboring towns of Karavas and Lapithos. Then, two days later, Porcuian and Austrian troops advanced to Kyrenia - taking the city without incident. Upon seeing the desperate situation of individuals both military and civilian, H.E.A.R.T. shipments were expedited to the northern coastal city. The peaceful nature of the exchange was overwhelmingly positive and full of relief to those involved. Indeed, Kyrenia did much to boost the initial moral of ICONOY forces operating within Yoloys.

Still, only a tiny portion of territory had been liberated by ICONOY. Boosted by the success of Kyrenia, Porcuian and Federation commanders decided to make a move for Lemesos. Securing the port for ICONOY would allow for a larger amount of humanitarian assistance to be moved into the country and would provide space for the repair and maintenance of ICONOY naval forces. With a large number of soldiers and the support of the Kasnyian superbattleship just offshore, Porcuian and Federation commanders were confident of success.

OOC: Yes, you are correct Porcu. In truth, I didn't bother to check a map of Cyprus to find where ICONOY landed. I think a map should be created showing current zones of control. Austrian forces landed offshore from the cities of Kyrenia and Karavas.

IC:

The situation on the ground was deteriorating faster than anyone in Dayr-az-Zawr had expected or planned for. After the infamous "stand your ground" order was initiated by their High Command, Whaladyan forces found themselves in two distinct and opposing camps - the adherents and the rebels. Over 70% of Whaladyan commanders fell into the later category and refused to shoot rounds at anyone donning the iconic blue helmet. This left all other opposing groups as fair game. The second smaller group of Whaladyan troops were those who had claimed to have obeyed Dayr-az-Zawr's orders and threatened to hold their ground against anyone - ICONOY included. As anyone could have guessed, the back of the Whaladyan National Army in Yoloys was broken as friend stood poised to fight friend at the whims of their respective officers.

Dayr-az-Zawr was not prepared for such a schism among its forces inside Yoloys. As a result, the "rebels" seized a significant advantage in capturing the majority of the army's equipment and remaining supplies. The left overs were quickly scrounged by the remaining Whaladyan troops and used in a desperate attempt to reclaim their authority. It was hardly effective. Most Whaladyan troops waited patiently inside their bases for ICONOY troops to relieve them. On the flip side, the very same occurrence as hostile Whaladyan forces were so undersupplied they couldn't leave their local zone of operations. In effect, ICONOY forces were playing a risky game of "flip the coin" as they approached any Whaladyan garrison. Luckily for them, the odds were always on their side; especially, if they were Porcuian. Definitely, if they were Porcuian. No Whaladyan commanders would order their troops to fire on the Emirate's largest foreign supplier and economic partner no matter what the current situation was. Peacekeepers of other flags and nationalities were not so lucky, as a small group of Austrians had found out as they approached the Whaladyan held city of Karavas. As a small Austrian reconnaissance group approached the city they were fired upon by a tired ragtag group of Whaladyan Rangers. By the end of the 12 minute firefight, 6 Austrians lie dead and the entire column retreated back to Kyrenia to plan their next move.

Back home in Dayr-az-Zawr, Whaladyan planners were still busy fighting among themselves over the current state of the occupation to deal with the rebellion of some of their troops. Officially, the government ordered all loyal commanders in Yoloys to fight the "rebels" as separatists and traitors, but this was difficult as roughly only 1/4 of Whaladyan soldiers on the island were "loyal". With no hope of resupply or reinforcements, those troops were forced to remain in their bases, as hostile as ever, until Dayr-az-Zawr changed its mind. Before long, the beleaguered Whaladyan capital would do as such, but not until the second battle of Karavas...

Nicosia...

Tarik had trembled the entire ride to Saleha's café. Normally, such a trip whilst on duty would be illegal and subject him to court marshal, but now that the army's structure had fallen apart, Tarik didn't rightly care. He was going to see his beloved foreign girlfriend regardless of what his officer's tried to do. Luckily for Tarik, his absence was barely noted by anyone other than Faraj, and he was packing to leave Yoloys as soon as possible.

Tarik was not leaving. He had decided this once his country's army had fallen apart. With the chaos and turmoil surrounding the current state of affairs on Yoloys, Tarik surmised that he could simply disappear into the woodwork. There he would live happily and comfortably with Saleha and her family for the rest of his days. Tarik had never doubted his feelings for his Yoloyese love. From the moment he set eyes on her he knew that he would marry her. It was precisely to do this that Tarik left his post and sped off in a stolen military jeep to Saleha's café.

When she ran through the door of her house and into his arms Tarik held her tightly - never to let go. As she looked up at him with her big brown eyes, he spoke.

"I'm not leaving no matter what happens. I've decided, I'm going to stay here in Yoloys," Tarik said tenderly. "Saleha, I want you to marry me."

Karavas...

The Austrians had joined the effort to pacify Yoloys largely as a gesture of good faith. The fact that the new Austrian government was viewed with skepticism and fear by much of Europe was not lost on the Archduke, nor was the fact that many still believed monarchies couldn't champion the cause of human rights and international justice to the same degree as democracies; however this was exactly why Austrian troops joined their Porcuian and F.U.A.N associates. While Karl II of Austria could never say he truly card for the plight of the Yoloyese, he understood what his country could do for them and doing such would grant his Austria what he desperately desired - credibility and respect.

Austria joined her ICONOY brethren as a latecomer, but in her tardiness she amassed a substancial force. The 1st Austrian Expeditionary Force was an imposing combat contingent slightly smaller than the traditional Reichswehr Feldarmie. With 60,000 men, 200 pieces of artillery, and over 1000 vehicles, the Austrian arm of ICONOY dwarfed almost all her competitors in sheer land power. When this was coupled with the might of the 2nd Krieg Fleet and her supercarrier flagship, AKS Donitz, the Austrians came to Yoloys with a single goal - to show the Empire's commitment to honor its word.

Austrian forces were commanded by the young and ambitious, General Walter von Kassel. As the Archduke's 5th nephew and only son of the current Minister of Justice, the 39 year old Von Kassel was no stranger to wealth and prestige; however a career in the Reichswehr gave the young commander a chance to make his own successes. In Yoloys, this meant suppressing any signs of violence towards civilians and protecting widely accepted international norms. No matter, it appeared as though the young general would be able to command troops into battle after-all. After the death of 6 of the Archduke's soldiers, Von Kassel was given permission by Vienna to "pacify" the city of Karavas. Acting within his jurisdiction, but without contacting his associates through ICON, he ordered 2 full Austrian Grenadier divisions into the city.

While the Whaladyan garrison first offered a stiff resistance at the city's outskirts (firing at the Austrians first), after a few calculated strikes from aircraft sent from the Donitz, the Whaladyans were broken. Following behind the might of the Leopard II tanks, the Grenadiers entered Karavas and began securing the city's most important sights. Whilst resistance was largely meagre towards the end, Austrian forces pushed into the city at full force up until the last Whaladyan troops surrendered. The whole "battle" took little less than 2 hours before Karavas was declared "secure" and the flags of ICON and Austria were hoisted above the city center. As combat ended, Austrian troops made the transition from soldiers to humanitarian aide workers and began facilitating some much needed supplies.

OOC: I've made a very crude map outlining where I believe the zones of control lie. Blue is ICONOY, Red is Whaladyan, Green is Arab Libyan, and Black is Confederate. Positions in the East also assume a Saliki blockade from that direction. Lastly, I'd like to comment on the number of soldiers: have we decided not to stick by the 40,000 level set by the ICON resolution? Currently, there are 15,000 Federation troops and 10,000 Porcuian that constitute ICONOY, apart from the Austrians. I'm alright if we raise it; I just want to know if we're sticking to the limit or not.

Also, Margrave stated that his special forces constitute only 2,400 men, so I haven't provided them with an extensive track of territory. Instead, I mapped them where Margrave RPed they were last.

DRAFT MAP OF CURRENT POSITIONS

IC:

Official Report
Emirate of Al Whaladya
To: ICON Office of Foreign Correspondence
The Emirate has decided to suspend her involvement formally with the WLC and will begin suspending all its operations under said organization. While current situations inside Yoloys require our military presence to remain at this time, the Emirate requests that said forces be permitted to remain in the area as ICON affiliated peacekeepers until ICON forces are implemented.

We request that ICON pressure the Republic of Salik to lift its blockade and it too assist in the resupply of Whaladyan forces. The Confederate invasion remains the greatest threat to peace inside Yoloys and currently only Whaladyan forces represent a viable force of resistance. Once ICON has landed its own peacekeepers, the Emirate will begin evacuating its own forces or shall remain upon the request of ICON.

We wish for a peaceful end to this issue and for Yoloys to stabilize.

That previous communiqué was relayed back to Al Whaladyan Command in Nicosia when reports of an exchange of fire was communicated to the various ICONOY commanders in Cyprus. Vice Admiral Junius Brutus Calpus, from the south of the country, again communicated the language of the ICON resolution to Al Whaladyan and Arab Libyan military commands - demanding that withdrawal of their forces commence in concert with the advance of ICON peacekeepers.

The arrival of Federation soldiers in the South allowed ICONOY to press forward to the port city of Lemesos, which lay under the control of an Arab Libyan garrison. The Arab Libyan government had already been praised by the Saliki Republic for their moderation, especially after the intervention of additional outside forces once the initial Whaladyan-Arab Libyan invasion began. Federation commanders were confident that the city would be transferred over without a fight.

To the North, Porcuian forces began to operate largely independently of their Austrian colleagues, though through no choice of their own. Indeed, the choice was a forced one. When the Austrian commander, the young General Walter von Kassel, moved to take Karavas without informing his colleagues or soliciting their help the decision was seen by the Porcuians as a general reflection of the arrogance that defined the new Austria. The local Porcuian co-commanders, the Major General Spurius Cornelius Scipio and the Praetor Quintus Caecilius Metellus Indusicus, telegraphed the information immediately to the other ICON commanders operating to the south. That the town of Karavas was taken without a real confrontation was not surprising.

From their positions in and around the coastal port city of Keryneia, the Porcuians began to advance further into Al Whaladyan controlled territory, Porcuian carrier based aircraft screamed through the skies overhead and relayed relevant information back to ICONOY command. Much of the day had already passed, but there were still a few hours of daylight left by the time a small, advance column of Porcuian APCs, tanks, and mobile artillery came to the edge of Agios Epiktitos.

OOC: FYI, I'm using this map of Cyprus when describing maneuvers and cities/towns.

Dayr-az-Zawr had not taken the news of events at Karavas lightly. Not only had the Whaladyan forces there put up a feeble show of resistance, they had confirmed to ICONOY that the Emirate was incapable of putting up serious resistance. With almost 3/4 of their troops already surrendering their territory or awaiting ICONOY to relieve them, the Whaladyan National Army was finished and everyone knew it. With Porcuian commanders already shoving an earlier Whaladyan statement promising to surrender in their face, planners back home in Al Whaladya were beginning to see that the occupation was over. Miraculously, the Defense Minister himself even began to see reason and retracted his order to persecute Whaladyan soldiers who disobeyed his "hold your ground" order.

Begrudgingly and with great shame, Omar al-Whaladya later signed the order for all Whaladyan troops to stand down. Henceforth, all of the Emirate's soldiers were ordered to assist in the willing transfer of territory to ICONOY forces. Special exceptions were made to any Confederate or Yoloyese militia forces Whaladyan forces may engage in their last duties, but for the most part the occupation was over for the Emirate of Al Whaladya. For a nation who had sacrificed almost 3,000 soldiers and over 14 billion dollars in the process, the end of the Yoloyese occupation was a major blow. At any rate, the Emirate's mission to prevent sectarian conflict inside its own borders was successful, but its invasion of Yoloys had created a whole new source of problems for a partly innocent nation. With the very nature of peace in Yoloys in doubt, Whaladyan planners washed their hands of the entire debacle.

Official Statement
Whaladyan Ministry of Foreign Affairs
The Emirate of Al Whaladya formally and officially concludes its humanitarian mission inside Yoloys. At exactly 08:00 hours, henceforth all Whaladyan servicemen will conclude their military duties and begin the process of withdrawing from all occupied positions on the island of Cyprus. Small contingents of the Whaladyan National Army will be tasked with the transfer of territory to ICONOY forces. All other groups who oppose this endeavor will be subject to the same rules of engagement followed during the occupation.

----

As news of the surrender of Whaladyan forces fluttered through the headquarters of all ICONOY's military commanders, a single thought had to be on everyone's mind - Nicosia. The Yoloyese capital city had suffered horrendously at the hands of the Whaladyan military's attempts to take the city and had never faired too much better after it had been pacified. Aside from desperately needing the humanitarian assistance provided by ICON, the city was viewed as the jewel of Cyprus and everyone wanted the honor of retaking it.

It wasn't 30 minutes after the official surrender was announced that Austrian General Walter von Kassel ordered approximately 10,000 men south from Karavas with the exclusive mission to relieve Nicosia's Whaladyan garrison and recapture the jewel of Cyprus. In little over 3 hours, at approximately 11:15 PM, Austrian peacekeeping forces were less than 5 miles from the city limits.

Prince Hamza and Crown Prince Mahmond were carrying out the Republic's peacekeeping transfer from their forces to the ICONOY in a manner which keep the stability of the country from being destroyied again an allow the peacekeeping forces to take control as the advance to secure the country from any threats. Hamza as the Supreme General in Command was at the moment the highest ranking military official in the Republic since his father and uncle were out of the country on a peace conference to end the conflict between GCU and them. He was in his father's office on the phone calling the Republic commanders to move the fleets towards their ports to help transport the WLC troops off the island with easily and his older brother was calling the ICONOY Commanders to alert them that the Republic will follow the resolution and transfer the control over to them when they entered their area of control. Additionally he sent the report that the Republic has been writing about the combat operations and what crimes have been committed by all sides in the conflict in hopes of bringing justice to the country.

OOC: this took place before Sharyan left for conference

IC: Sharyan motioned for the guards who came rushing in to stand down before he began talking to the duke "We are at the moment trying to find out what happen and how the kidnappers took your younger brother without our notice but we suspect that they got in when their was a breach in the Republic's security during the Third Medina Conference and when the GCU started their drone attacks on our country. We know that he was kidnapped after taking his first lessons with my daughter in law Hamza's wife Princess Seraphina two days ago and we suspect that CMESS has something to do with it but we are not sure yet. So please calm down young one we will get your brother back one way or another along with bringing the peace who have done this to justice. Until then you must calm down and have a bodyguard with you at all times until we find out if the kidnappers were only here for your brother or are still in the country trying to get you to get more leverage on your father."

MAP OF CURRENT POSITIONS

As expected by ICONOY leadership, the Libyans were very accommodating in the face of the advancing blue-helmeted soldiers. The exchange of Lemesos into the hands of ICON, the subsequent evacuation of all Libyan military personnel, and the deployment of humanitarian aid to the native Yoloyese occurred in just over 48 hours. The speed, peacefulness, and efficiency of the handover surprised the Porcuian commander, Vice Admiral Junius Brutus Calpus; however, it also emboldened him and the Federation leadership. The dinner shared that night between the ICONOY commanders was pleasant. Some were confident that most of Yoloys would be safe within the hands of the peacekeepers in a week's time, while the rest of Cyprus would follow soon after.

The situation was slightly different to the North. Austrian peacekeepers under the command of General Von Kassel had captured the town of Trachonas, which sat just beyond the limits of the capital, Nicosia. Whereas the Austrians seemed more concerned with the rapid capture of territory, the Porcuians operating closer to the coastline made sure their advance was matched by the advance of H.E.A.R.T. convoys. Porcuian peacekeepers had gotten as far east as Kalograia when news of the Austrian advance upon Nicosia made it to Major General Cornelius Scipio. The decision was made to temporarily halt the advance east and to assess the level of aid dispersed to the populace. Thus far, Russian brute determination had come very much in handy, since a number of difficult to reach mountain towns were provided much needed food, water, and medical supplies by the efforts of the Russians operating within H.E.A.R.T.

...

After the capture of Karavas by Austrian forces a short, but lively debate had occurred via a secure telephone network between the three Porcuian commanders present on the isle of Cyprus. Appointed by Parliament to oversee Porcuian efforts within ICONOY, Lieutenant General Quintus Fabius Pictor outranked his colleagues, yet his leadership style was such that neither of the other Generals felt weighed down or pressured. The topic of conversation was, perhaps unsurprisingly, Nicosia - and the Austrians.

The preliminary details of the Whaladyan occupational force were outlined and gone over, with none believing that the Austrians would have trouble taking the capital. Concern was expressed, however, when it came to possible collateral damage. Vice Admiral Junius Brutus Calpus was sure the Austrians wouldn't take another slight stand by the Whaladyans well and would be prepared to use heavy force in capturing the city. Major General Cornelius Scipio was of the exact opposite opinion, while General Fabius Pictor leaned toward Cornelius Scipio's opinion - the reason being that the Austrian Archduke was still very sensitive and would likely not tolerate any use of excessive force.

"I still say we should move into Nicosia." Junius Brutus Calpus said, leaning back in his chair. He began to peel an orange as he spoke into the phone. "Cornelius Scipio, isn't there a brigade of paratroopers that arrived as part of your forces?"

"Yes..." the aeronautical commander replied, followed by a short pause.

"Who is the commander?" Quintus Fabius Pictor asked.

"Brigadier General Manius Valerius Messalla, Sir." Cornelius Scipio said. "A very capable soldier, Sir."

"Indeed, I recognize the name from briefs I received during the Genesisian Crusade against Cologne." General Fabius Pictor replied.

"Sir," Junius Brutus Calpus began again, "I don't trust the Austrians to deal with the Whaladyans. Consider as well the fact that Whaladyan forces have been all too happy to surrender themselves to us - you understand better than Cornelius Scipio and I the influence the Republic has in Dayr az-Zwar. There is the possibility of saving a great deal of lives."

Fabius Pictor mulled the thought in his mind as the discussion carried on between the naval commander and his aeronautical colleague. In the end, the thought of partially denying Karl II his prize while simultaneously rescuing Whaladyan soldiers within Nicosia was highly tempting.

"The order shall be given, Spurius Cornelius Scipio." he said. "See that all necessary communications and details are provided to the Austrians. Also, make our general intentions understood to the Whaladyans...How much of the city can we take?"

"Well, General Valerius Messalla is better able than I to tell you, but..." There was a slight pause. "half the city could be taken. Maybe more."

"Wonderful."

Communications were sent, orders were relayed, and the highly experienced and iconic paratroopers of the Republic made themselves ready to be airlifted into Nicosia. Time was short, so a full level of intel was not at the disposal of General Valerius Massalla as he and his men were loaded onto the transport planes. Still, finally getting to do the job they were trained to do, and had carried out many times before, was encouraging.

OOC: Porcu, there are many more confederate forces than just the Onco Kolordu on the island. Confederate forces landed at Kyrenia. I purposefully kept the number ambiguous so that we could focus on advancing the story rather than semantics on the actual fighting. We can just say they retreated further into the island so that we can still use the current battle lines if you'd like.

The deployment, dispersal, and subsequent assistance of ICONOY forces on Cyprus had been carried out more rapidly than many had first believed. In little under a period of two weeks, Porcuian and Austrian forces in particular had made major head-roads into formerly occupied WLC territory mostly unopposed and in some instances even with the assistance of the Whaladyans/Libyans. There was the unfortunate exchange of fire between Austrian reconnaissance units and Whaladyan rangers in the city of Karavas to the north; however, the Austrian Oberkommando rectified the situation by "green-lighting" a full frontal assault on the city later that day. The Whaladyan garrison crumbled in little under an hour and Karavas was secured. Military planners in Vienna, as well as analysts worldwide, could make a case that the subsequent Whaladyan capitulation was as of a direct result - and they did.

Vienna had made clear its ambitions to its ICONOY partners early on with the seizure of Karavas and Trachonas, and then further still with the surrounding of Nicosia. Karl II of Austria was adamant that captured territory, secured and properly administered, would ease the flow of humanitarian aide. Not surprisingly, it would also grant the Austrian Reichswehr a fair amount of praise, practice, and prestige; in fact, the two went hand in hand. While humanitarian aide would follow the Austrians into every corner of liberated territory, it was never without strict rules and remained under heavy military surveillance. Despite these heavy measures, everyone who requested aide eventually received it with the added benefit of general security provided by the Austrian's gargantuan military presence.

Safety and security were beginning to represent the norm across the ICONOY liberated zones. Nevertheless, while movements from the Yoloyese nationalist militias were less likely in the north, they still remained a threat to ICONOY supply lines and rear-echelon troops everywhere. Luckily for Austrian, Porcuian, and U.A.F commanders, the militias had decided to make their presence less noticeable than previously demonstrated under the Whaladyan occupation. Regardless of that fact, however, ICONOY commanders across the island placed their rearguards and supply caravans on high alert for potential ambushes and saboteurs. The Whaladyans themselves had also made ICONOY's mission easier by adhering to the formal surrender. As ICONOY peacekeepers approached Whaladyan garrisons the defenders complied with Dayr-az-Zawr's guidelines and transferred control to the "blue-helmets." There was no surrendering of weapons, but Whaladyan soldiers shared all information they had of the surrounding area and their commanders cooperated with their ICONOY counterparts peacefully before packing up their gear and setting off for the closest port to catch a Libyan ship for the return journey home.

In Nicosia, the strongest of the Whaladyan garrisons awaited the immanent arrival of the Austrians with a mixed bag of emotions - some volatile. Official orders from Dayr-az-Zawr were to surrender the city to any ICONOY forces upon arrival; however there were many who viewed a capitulation to Austrian forces as too embarrassing. After Karavas, Whaladyan soldiers distrusted and disliked Austrians and generally left their positions before they arrived to relieve them. As Nicosia was too large to abandon, Whaladyan Regional Command had to create a new plan. After much debate, the decision was decided - Austrian forces would be stalled and barred from entry until the Porcuians arrived from the south. While armed resistance was deemed futile and ridiculous, Whaladyan commanders would do what they could to prevent a total Austrian victory.

----
Nicosia..

At exactly 4:02 AM, Austrian forces arrived outside the city limits and began preparing for a standoff. As unlikely as it was, Karavas had shown the Austrians that underestimating a skirmish could cause a protracted battle. Over 10,000 Austrian soldiers descended on Nicosia and began surrounding every avenue of approach and escape. By 5:00 AM, the entire city was cut off from escape and the Austrians were poised to contact Whaladyan Regional Command.

From the lavish accommodations of his captured hotel-turned-headquarters, General Walter von Kassel wrapped up a routine phone-call to Vienna. Von Kassel was calm, collected, and his voice reflected an air of overconfidence. On the other end, the voice of the Archduke was more reserved and serious.

"I want no issues here, General," the Archduke stated. "Take the city as peacefully as you can. I don't want another Karavas fiasco. Is that understood?"

"Jawohl, Your Majesty," Von Kassel replied confidently. "The Whaladyans are finished and they've formally surrendered; however, our scouts indicate they haven't removed the roadblocks, mines, or abandoned their machinegun nests on the city's outskirts. Should the city be defended, I'm asking for your permission to conduct military operations against the defenders. You do want the golden falcon flying above the city before the tattered rag of Porcu do you not, your Majesty?"

There was a short pause.

"Of course, General," The Archduke replied flatly. "However, history will judge us by the manner of our victory not just by the outcome. I hope I do not need to explain to you the geopolitical climate of Europe right now? I didn't think so, General. Exercise every peaceful option you have, General. Should the Whaladyans open fire or oppose your entry by force, you may use military force to take the city."

Von Kassel nodded diligently, "Thank you, Your Majesty."

"Oh, one more thing, Walter," Karl said just before he hung up. "I'm sending you a SPEZGRU contingent in case things go bottom up. They've been training non-stop since inception and the Kreigsmarine is eager to administer their first field test. Some more special forces never hurt anyone."

"I've heard nothing but good things about the Kreigsmarine's new project, sir," Von Kassel said smiling. "I'm sure we'll find a use for them."

"Very good, Walter. May Austria forever prosper," Karl replied hanging up the phone.

"May Austria forever prosper, Your Majesty!" Von Kassel replied before he too hung up.

General von Kassel gathered his effects then left his study and proceeded to take his position in the observation tower. Several miles away, a small armored APC carried an Austrian garrison down the stretch of highway towards the first Whaladyan checkpoint. Von Kassel watched as the Austrian captain began discussing the surrender to his Whaladyan counterpart. Suddenly, the Austrian's posture changed and he threw his blue beret on the ground in anger. As he walked towards his radio man, the captain pointed to an Austrian tank and then back at the Whaladyan.

"These bastards aren't budging!" the captain was heard over the radio. "They're claiming some horseshit about a city-wide blackout which is preventing their evacuation!"

"Are you positive, captain?" Von Kassel asked, grabbing the radio. "Did you inform him that we would be more than willing to assist?"

"Yes sir, General, I told him we have technicians who are 100 times more adept at fixing this than they are! He flatly refused my offer, sir!" the captain replied arms waving.

"Keep trying, captain. Exercise all options before returning to the FOB," Von Kassel replied.

The captain strolled back to his Whaladyan counterpart and began exchanging other methods of getting Austrian peacekeepers into the city. It appeared as though nothing was going to get the Austrians in until 6 am the next day - when the Whaladyans claimed the apparent blackout would be fixed. Von Kassel was no amused and he cursed. The Whaladyans were stalling for time that the Austrians couldn't afford to match. Porcuian forces were little more than a day away and could be inside the city limits by the following morning. The Austrians were being forced to play the Whaladyan's game.

"Tell that fucker that he has until 3 am to let us in or we will treat his little game as 'hostile intent to subvert humanitarian aide'. Then, in the meantime, I want a direct line to Whaladyan Regional Command to express my grievances. Is that clear?", Von Kassel ordered angrily.

A resounding "Jawolh" was echoed throughout the room. Across the way, the Austrian captain grabbed his dirty beret and climbed back into his APC. Several miles away, in the city of Kyrenia, the Austrian maritime special forces were just being unloaded and outfitted for military style operations. SPEZGRU, or the Spezial Seekrieg Hilfegruppe as it was known colloquially, was the Kreigsmarine's highly trained special forces unit. Trained rigorously, but yet untested, the unit was eager to prove their skills and were itching for any excuse. By 3 am the next morning, the unit would be poised to assault Nicosia should the need arise.

OOC: I sincerely apologize Margrave; I believed your post regarding the Onco Korlordu was the main Confederate force and focused on it. I'll try and explain things here, but I'll gladly edit the post later.

IC:

The advantage that the Confederacy had enjoyed after landing fresh, well-trained forces in the northern parts of the island vanished when news of the passage of the resolution in ICON made its way to Kale Sahir. Indeed, the seriousness of the resolution's backers became apparent when Porcuian and Kasnyian forces first made landfall at Episkopi. Nonetheless, the Confederate High Command had calculated the entrance of ICONOY forces into its plans and believed that a solution favorable to the CMESS, while extremely complicated, could still be salvaged. That calculus changed, however, when two large naval forces were spotted by Confederate soldiers occupying the city of Livera and subsequently identified by Confederate military intelligence as the Austrian Expeditionary Force and Porcuian reinforcements.

Fearful of an accidental confrontation with the large and fast approaching ICONOY forces, Confederate military command ordered the withdrawal of its forces into the interior of the island nation. Temporary HQ was established at Pano Zodeia, while the largest fraction of Confederate forces were concentrated in a corridor between the cities of Morfou and Kato Lakatameia. In the confusion that reigned within the Whaladyan armed forces following the landing of ICONOY forces at Keryneia, Confederate High Command had considered storming the main international airport of Yoloys away from Whaladyan hands. This maneuver was put on hold with the rapid advance of Austrian and Porcuian peacekeepers West, who arrived at the city of Kontemenos four days after landing at Keryneia and now were close to directly threatening Confederate forces south of their position.

Yet, while Libyan, Whaladyan, and ICONOY radio traffic continued regularly, there was little to be heard from the military forces of the Confederacy operating in Yoloys.

...

The encirclement of the Yoloyese capital Nicosia by Austrian forces was rapid and complete - a professional undertaking by a highly professional force. Porcuian peacekeepers had been operating further north and further east, near the cities of Kythrea, Voni, and Epicho, when word of the Austrian's initial advance into the outer limits of the capital reached them. Following the teleconference between the Porcuian commanders on the island, a general halt was placed on Porcuian advances east to better facilitate the distribution of humanitarian aid and to fortify and recalibrate supply lines. The lack of a major port in the north complicated matters for ICONOY forces; soon it would be necessary to either concentrate an advance through Whaladyan controlled territory for the city of Ammochostos or to take the international airport that lay to the west of Nicosia.

Also as a result of the teleconference between the Porcuian generals, a brigade of the elite paratroopers was given orders to secure as much of the capital as possible. Communiqués were forwarded to Whaladyan commanders within the city limits, with delayed messages being sent to Austrian forces operating outside the capital. The paratroopers were split into two groups, one to Aglantzia and the other to the area surrounding the Imperial Palace in Agioi Omologitai, and raced to their target areas in the early morning hours.

In the minutes prior to their jump, Brigadier General Manius Valerius Messalla latched his helmet and swept away from his eyes the black feathers that adorned his, and every paratrooper's, helmet. A symbol of pride, legacy, tradition, and experience, the black plumage of the Porcuian paratroopers had become a recognizable feature on any battlefield where the Republic fought. Soon the Yoloyese and Whaladyans within the city and the Austrians without would come to partly know why the paratroopers were such a trusted force for the Republic.

Tsar Azil awoke with a start. The realisation that his youngest son was being held captive by the insane Chancellor Cumali, had caused the relatively young monarch to collapse. The first thing that Azil thought, once he regained some sort of 'stability', was to inform his sisters. Rojye, Ida and Lanya still deserve to know what has happened - despite the fact that all three sisters had renounced their membership to the Imperial Family and lost their royal titles upon marrying commoners, they all still needed to know what the situation was like at the Imperial Palace. Who first? Lanya still lived in Nicosia with her husband, Ida and Inaasi in Aulak and Rojye in Renia. Now Rojye was his biggest concern. The eldest - and the bossiest if I may add - sister of Tsar Azil, Rojye Neroso and her husband Galin Neroso had recently relocated to Renia. The port city was currently under the control of the Porcu and Whaladyan Army. With luck, the telephone lines would still be working.

Nicosia

"Oh Tarik!" gasped Saleha in tearful joy. The couple embraced tightly.

The rest of Saleha's family - her mother, father, sister Ayesha, brother-in-law Yahya Salloo and her niece Nargis and nephew Rashid - along with the customers of the cafe, stood outside and cheered loudly. Badrunnisa embraced her husband Yunus, whilst Ayesha and Yahya wept in pure delight. Nargis and Rashid ran up to the couple clapped and jumped.

Tarik himself, was also starting to cry. It was as if, Tarik was finally home.

"Saleha, I also practiced some of my Yoloysese as well, just in case" said Tarik smugly. Without thinking, Tarik started to recite - half in Yoloysese and half in Arabic.

"Saleha Aswat, you are my dunya - world - and whenever I utter your ūzbahda - name - I have butterflies in my stomach. I want to spend my zindagi - life - with you, for you are the one who brings ju'leyaa - happiness - to my bleak zindagi - life"

"Well looks like I have to plan a date for the Nikkah with the Imam of Saliheen Masjid, you have made mine and my wife so proud Tarik - Allah grant you a fulfilled and happy life" said Yunus.

The bride-to-be ran up to her future husband and kissed him passionately. Saleha suddenly broke the trance by asking Tarik a serious and unexpected question.

"You shouldn't have! My God, does your parents know, what about Faraj? Does he know? Does he support your decision? Are you comfortable that I am a Shafi'i and our children might possibly be raised as Shafi'i (one of the four schools of thought in Sunni Islam) as well?" panicked Saleha.

For all the laudable efforts and actions of ICONOY forces in Yoloys, the fact that neither Porcuian nor Austrian forces controlled a large port city in the North greatly hampered chances of continued stability in that region. While the Austrians had done a splendid job of controlling the territory within their jurisdiction, the hundreds of tons of food and medical supplies which accompanied them on their initial landing was rapidly being distributed or exhausted. Fairly soon in the not-too-distant future the well of Austrian humanitarian supplies in the north would run dry - causing not just a supply deficit for the Yoloyese population, but a total halt of the Austrian advance on all fronts. Determined not to endure the same fate as their Whaladyan predecessors, the Austrian Oberkommando der Reichswehr began discussing potential options for opening a larger terminus from which the flow from their supply lines could travel more quickly.

As far as anyone inside the OKR could see it, the Austrians had two potential avenues of approach. The first, and arguably the simplest, was to seize the airstrip inside Aglandija in the west of Nicosia's suburbs. Reichswehr forces had already isolated Nicosia and could theoretically send a contingent west to secure the airport and its surrounding area with relative ease. Upon their arrival they could rendezvous with elements of the 114th Grenadier Division who were already swiftly advancing into the town of Morphou.

Farther to east, a second much more difficult option lied with the Whaladyan held city of Mojyke. Called Famagusta by the Turks and Ammochostos by the Greeks, Mojyke was among the first cities to fall to the Whaladyans and its large port had served as their principal supply base in the north. Unfortunately for this option, the farthest any Austrian forces had made in the city's direction was the town of Prastio - over 80 or so miles away. If Mojyke was to be liberated, then Austrian commanders were skeptical about the possibility of a rapid victory on land. It wasn't until a vice-admiral in the 2nd Fleet suggested using the Kriegsmarine's 5th and 6th Royal Marine Divisions still stationed off the coast that the Austrians hatched their brilliant plan - an amphibious landing near the city limits. At 2 PM, elements of the 2nd Fleet navigated around Cape Apostolos Andreas and landed 20,000 Royal Marines outside the city of Mojyke. A transmission was forwarded to the Whaladyans urging a transfer of authority immediately, whilst the transmission to Porcuian forces wasn't forwarded until after Mojyke was surrounded.

---

In Nicosia the mood remained visibly tense. With Whaladyan and Austrian soldiers starring blankly at one another at a distance of little more than several yards, commanders on both sides were awaiting any form of confrontation no matter how minor one could be. As the time approached 2 PM, the Austrians were waiting eagerly for the Whaladyan engineers to fix the blackout so they could finally relieve the city.

As he sat enjoying a cup of coffee, General Walter von Kassel reviewed his battlefield intelligence one more time. Several moments prior, the young general had received the confirmation of the 5th and 6th Royal Marine Divisions' landing off the coast of Mojyke and was currently drafting the appropriate transmission to be sent to the Porcuian regional commander. Nearer to his own area of operations, von Kassel buzzed over the planning of his own troop movements in the west to secure the international airport. Unbeknownst to him, at this exact time elements of the infamous Porcuian Paratroopers were already landing on the airport's tarmac.

As he scribbled some notes to himself, von Kassel's aide-de-camp entered and addressed him.

"General sir, there is a colonel of the Spezial Seekrieg Hilfegruppe outside awaiting your direction, sir," the aide stated. "Shall I send him in?"

Von Kassel nodded and the man left in flash. "SPEZGRU," von Kassel swished around in his mouth, mulling the name over.

Suddenly, the man entered, "General, Colonel Marc Klein reporting and awaiting orders. I have three teams on the ground and one prepping for aerial insertion if needed. Where do you need me?" He finished with a salute.

"Received," von Kassel replied, returning the salute. "Are you and your men ready to go dark? I don't want to wait a second longer for this blackout nonsense. I'm prepared to send SPEZGRU in along with some of my Grenzers to covertly secure positions of interest. If you'll take a look here -,"

A radio transmission from the shortwave on von Kassel's desk cut in audibly and abruptly. Both men turned silent and listened.

"Valkyrie 4 to Reichskommander, Valkyrie 4 to Reichskommander, come in Reichskommander....."

"Valkyrie 4, this is Reichskommander," von Kassel replied, grabbing the radio. "What's the situation to the west? Over."

The voice sounded confused and slightly irritated, "You're not going to believe this....I think I see Porcuians unloading inside Aglantzia. Over."

"What? Are you sure, Valkyrie 4?" Von Kassel questioned annoyed and shocked.

"Jawohl, Herr Kommandant," the voice whispered, "The black plumage on their helmets confirms it. Porcuian paratroopers, sir..."

Before von Kassel could reply another voice was heard on the radio, this time by a reconnaissance officer over looking Nicosia.

"Reichskommander, this is Eagle 2, reports of unknown individuals para-dropping into Agioi Omologitai observed. Requesting immediate assistance. Over," the voice reported.

Von Kassel threw his officer's cap onto the floor and cursed. A few feet away, Colonel Klein was answering to his own men through his secure line. In quick succession both men began reviewing the situation before Von Kassel turned and spoke.

"Colonel, prepare your men for insertion," he ordered sternly. "I want each and every bridge, rail line, subway tunnel, and street open for my armor and supply trucks. In no more than 1 hour I want 99% of this city in Austrian hands, is that understood?"

"Unquestionably, sir," Klein replied calmly, but with excitement radiating from his eyes. "Lets see how these Porcuians operate."

The Colonel saluted quickly and ran out of the room, already barking orders through his headset. As he left, von Kassel slammed his fist down on the map of Nicosia. He might have lost the airport, but he would take Nicosia.

----

Several hundred miles above Nicosia a single Austrian Transall C-160 cargo plane was screaming down towards the earth at breakneck speed. In the cargo bay, sat 30 or so SPEZGRU operators preparing to exit the aircraft. They all wore a new type of uniform yet unseen by any other soldier, thus masking them from immediate recognition by either the Whaladyans or Porcuians mulling about below. Over their faces, the operators had tied black bandanas with the likeness of skeletons to intimidate any "opponents." On the sleeves of their multi-colored uniforms, a single identifying patch was visible - the unmistakable seal of the monarchy atop a screeching falcon.

As the door to the cargo bay opened, the first operator stood and attached his carabineer to the wire traveling the length of the ceiling. Like clockwork all his associates followed suit until they all were connected. One by one, the operators ran towards the open door and jumped into the air - the whipping winds catching them immediately and spinning them in every direction. As each man jumped, the others gradually moved to one another until they all resides mostly in the same area. In a couple minutes they would open their parachutes and float down into the city. Awaiting them were the other 120 operators who had inserted covertly from the ground.

In a mere 30 minutes, SPEZGRU and its Grenzer brethren had secured over 50% of the city's bridges and tunnels. All around the city, Austrian tank engines roared and boots stomped as the Reichswehr began entering the city.

"Work is the curse of the drinking classes."

The landing of Austrian marines outside of Ammochostos, as the Porcuians called the Yoloyese port city of Mojyke, was well received by Porcuian regional commanders due to the fact that valuable shipments of army matériel and humanitarian supplies could be pumped into the areas where it was needed most. The Porcuian portion of the Northern front had stopped after liberating the city of Mousoulita, to the south, and the cities of Flamoudi and Davlos, to the north, due to an anticipated contraction of fuel in the next few days. Lieutenant General Quintus Fabius Pictor ordered additional supplies, including fuel, to be handed over to H.E.A.R.T. assistants, humanitarian groups, and medical teams, whose work through ICONOY liberated territory had done much to ease the suffering of Yoloyese innocents. A widely circulated media story told of a young girl who was able to receive life-saving surgery with the advance of ICONOY peacekeepers into the town of Karmi and through the subsequent effort of Yshurakan doctors working under H.E.A.R.T.

As Porcuian forces were still far from the eastern coast, communiqués were sent to Whaladyan forces occupying the port of Ammochostos and the city center to hand over command as quickly and peacefully as possible. General Fabius Pictor himself wrote the message in the hopes that a small nudge would suffice in getting the Whaladyans to not play with the Austrians, as they had in Nicosia. The capture of the harbor was critical to the overall success of the ICONOY campaign.

...

Further west, the situation in and around Nicosia continued to develop swiftly. The rapid insertion and dispersal of the Austrian SPEZGRU to the city's west meant that a majority of bridges and tunnels along the Pediaios River fell into Austrian hands before the Whaladyan garrison, or indeed the Porcuian paratroopers, could respond.

Brigadier General Valerius Messalla had landed with the second group in the neighborhood of Agioi Omologitai, at the center of which stood the impressive Imperial Palace. Radio traffic amongst the Whaladyan command and the garrison of the capital spiked when Porcuian transport aircraft were spotted over the city. Having been informed of their arrival in advance, Whaladyan anti-aircraft batteries remained quiet as the outlines of the paratroopers grew closer and closer. The General himself had skillfully landed in the front garden of the palace and moved quickly to the entrance. Flanked by several paratroopers, General Valerius Massalla met with the Whaladyan garrison commander, he having set up his command center inside part of the Palace. Pleasantries were exchanged and thanks were provided to the Whaladyans for delaying the Austrians. Guarantees of safety and eventual safe passage out of the city and the island were also given.

The banter was cut short when Valerius Massalla received reports of the SPEZGRU. The General utilized his radio to contact the third paratrooper group, which had landed to the east, near Aglantzia. "Commander, how are we faring?"

"Sir! The municipal office is under our control. Team Vulcānus is en route for the International Conference Center and Team Neptūnus is moving west."

"Excellent. Commander, we have company sooner than expected, so I am changing some objectives. I'm directing Team Ops north for the bridges, while Team Cerēs will move south. I will stick with Team Apollō and move for the Agios Prokopios Church. Direct Team Neptūnus to the Telecommunications Authority Complex and hold the southern perimeter. Team Vulcānus is to swing north towards the walled city after capturing the Conference Center."

"Sir!" the paratrooper Commander replied.

General Valerius Massalla returned his radio and took a moment to again thank his Whaladyan counterpart.

"Not at all." the Whaladyan replied. "My men will continue to do what they can."

"Just don't be foolish, commander!" the Porcuian replied as he fixed his helmet and began to move away from the Palace.

The movement of the SPEZGRU was exactly as expected - swift, decisive, and forceful. A number of obstacles put up by Whaladyan garrison teams had done little to stop the advance of the Austrians. Concentrated along the river banks, SPEZGRU moved in unison with their counterparts in the Reichsheer so that little time separated the capture of a bridge or tunnel with the subsequent use of that bridge or tunnel by Austrian ground forces to enter the city proper. By the time General Valerius Massalla and his men had crossed the river, capturing the major bridge south of the Imperial Palace, much of the river front was in Austrian hands. It would only be a matter of time before much of the city, including the old and storied walled area, was in Austrian hands. While the Austrians could count on armored and vehicular support, the Porcuians were shut out from direct access to the city. This, however, only made the Porcuians smile broadly.

Like lightening the paratroopers moved in all directions and, before you knew it, General Valerius Massalla and the men and women of Team Apollō were upon the long celebrated Agios Prokopios Church - the Austrians not far away at all.
