The Calm

The border between the Baltic State and the Communist Republic of Quaon was one of the most tense borders on the European Continent. Directly south of the Baltic State was what Quaonians called the State of Lithuania, a jutting appendage that connected the Quaonian heartland to the Baltic Sea. To the Baltic Germans, it was Courland, one of the ancient homelands of the Baltic Germans, which the Swordbrethren had carved from the pagan wilderness during the Northern Crusades. While it had now been part of Quaon for far longer than the Baltic State had existed, resentment was still strong among Baltic Germans. Within the Baltic State, there was a Provisional Council of Courlander Nobles, which claimed to represent the interests of the Baltic Germans of Courland. Quaon, as a Communist Republic, could never be a land of great estates and lordly proprietors. Love of hierarchy, the supremacy of the military class, German culture, and even Protestantism were alien to the Quaonian spirit.

Gazing south at the Quaonion border, many Baltic Germans saw not just the boundary separating Germans from Balts and Slavs, but a boundary separating nobility from servility, honor from shame, order from chaos, civilization from barbarism. Great lords and smallholders alike distrusted even the most moderate Marxists in Quaon, while Quaonions were suspicious of the German nationalism so prevalent in the Baltic country. Both countries maintained large border garrisons, and the crossing was one of the most difficult in Europe for travelers to make. The soldiers on each side would often gaze at each other, waiting for the tension to break, for someone to make a move, for war or peace to break out and the uncertainty to end. But day after day, nothing changed.

Nothing changed until the day when Baltic German tanks and infantry started pulling back from the borders. A limited garrison remained in place, but it seemed that the Baltic State no longer saw war as a likelihood, which in itself made war far less likely.

OOC: Just a note, RD, Quaon is now officially the State of Quaon and has been ruled for 36 years by the secular nationalist corporatist-lite National Republicans and their erstwhile conservative Orthodox pseudo-theocratic allies, the Party of the White Movement. A socialist coalition still makes up the primary opposition, but the communists have never gotten a hold back on power. Also, I'm just going to retcon the official name of the province to be the Courland Oblast. Expect a forthcoming post laying out various Courlander factions.

OOC:  That changes dynamics considerably. I think it's probably best if I close this thread, and do a rewrite soon. Let me know if you have any issues with that.
