Ferdinand's brow pinched inwards and his eyes focused intently on his target.

"I'm merely contemplating for what reason God spared your life", the Crown Prince responded harshly.

Atratinus' own eyes stared back in defiance and a low chuckle erupted from his throat and became a hearty laugh. Ferdinand's angered expression in response only prolonged the Porcuian's laughter. Once their eyes met again, Atratinus' humor subsided and he found himself staring directly into the Austrian's deeply troubled soul. Something very dark stirred inside this new found adversary.

"I would refrain from your usual antics, Herr Atratinus", Ferdinand responded, "You no longer hold the keys to your own fate.."

"Oh? Is that so? Please enlighten me on who does, your majesty?"

"Is it not obvious? God spared you and placed your life in my care..."

"And for what reason do you imagine this has occurred, Prince Ferdinand?"

"Ah, that's the beauty of it. I don't yet know. Don't you see? Your not leaving this palace until I see fit. I own you, Herr Atratinus. Your fate rests on my own personal pleasure....and dare I say I do not feel particularly benevolent!"

Atratinus said nothing, but rather drifted his attention back towards the ceiling. Ferdinand never faltered from his gaze. His eyes burned with a peculiar determination that eagerly awaited the Porcuian's reply.

Before that reply would come, Adrian stepped in. He first leaned in close to Ferdinand, and whispered.

"Don't be stupid. You are in no position to threaten anyone, brother. If you take the pleasure of killing him from me I swear: I will make your life a living hell. But this is not the place. If he dies here, Europe dies with him." He withdrew and stared the Prince in the eyes, making sure the meaning of the message was not lost.

He then turned to Atratinus, and delivered a message to him in the same manner.

"I hate you, but you cannot die. Not here. Not by his hand." As he spoke the last words, he gripped the hilt of his sabre, making sure Atratinus could see.

He then retreated to again stand with Karl.

Karl noticed the smirk on Adrian's face as he sauntered back from his brief remarks to the bedridden pair. The Archduke liked Adrian. He truly did; however, his new found ally's temper often got the better of his judgement, especially when dealing with that Porcuian, Atratinus. Indeed, Adrian's obsession with Atratinus was obvious to anyone who spent more than 5 minutes with both men in the same room. Karl disliked the man immensely as well, yet he recognized that Adrian's desire to murder the man directly or indirectly was sheer folly. Such an action would never benefit Austria as long as the blame rested on its shoulders - something that Karl would need to drill into his own son once he was well again.

In some ways, Atratinus was safer in captivity with Karl in control than anything else. Adrian would respect the wishes of the Archduke.

All of sudden, Karl found the room to be rather stuffy and so he casually stepped out to gather some fresh air. He walked through the door to the hallway where he passed a great deal of those who still remained within the palace grounds. Paying them as much attention as a one would dirt, Karl strolled to a large glass door frame leading outside to one of the Hofburg's many lavish gardens. He leaned over the railing and sighed deeply. A lot had gone awry this day, yet his end goal was accomplished. Austria was once again ruled by the monarchy, but she still wasn't in a position to successfully best her neighbors should they unite together against her. No, Austria very much needed another strong ally. If nothing else, to rob the Porcuians or Marslavans of a potential friend. Karl had an idea of who he could ask, and of how he would do it.

As if by fate, the Russian royal siblings entered the garden from across the terrace. The young Sophia looked rather tired and her brother dolefully attended to her as she laid down on a plush love seat. Sensing that the young Romanovs were likely ready to leave, Karl moved to their side as quickly and quietly as he could.

"Duchess Sophia, are you alright?" Karl asked thoughtfully.

Sophia stirred slowly at the question.

"Oh, hello your majesty. Yes, I'm merely exhausted. It has been a stressful day to say the least," the young duchess replied with a slight bitterness in her tone.

"Mmm, yes allow me to apologize from the most sincere part of my heart," Karl replied, "Had I been given the chance, I would have had this day end much differently, I assure you."

"Yes, I imagine we all would have," Constantine replied, allowing a short pause to follow. "Well, your majesty, I feel it is time the Duchess and myself returned to Moscow. For what its worth, I give you my condolences on the nature of the night. Please give my best wishes to Prince Ferdinand and the royal couple. I pray everything turns out for the better. We all value the fragile European peace."

Karl smiled and nodded in understanding, but he quickly replied, "As do I, Duke Constantine, as do I. I ardently hope we may seen more of each other in the future. The both of you. Austria and Russia have a responsibility to maintain said peace in Europe, yet we must also look out for one another in times of mutual gain or threat. Should you wish it, I would be delighted to meet in the future to further the normalization of Austro-Russian relations."

Map Tsar and Southern Gentleman

Grand Duke Constantine looked over the man before him. His words did not fall dead on Constantine, who got the point very clearly, yet also quite surprisingly. After all that had transpired not even within twenty-four hours, it seemed as if it phased not the towering man who was Karl von Hapsburg II. He is either a great statesman to his people or one of the shrewdest politicians I have ever met Constantine thought as he scanned the Archduke. Yet I see no sign of Porcuian blood in him....a statesman then, truly a great Austrian statesman.

"I imagine yourself and my brother could have much to discuss indeed" Constantine stated finally. "Much has transpired and continued to hinge in a purgatory state, something that is unsettling to Moscow to say the least. I imagine what transpires here for the remainder of the night will dictate whether peace remains tomorrow or not."

"We do wish to express our deepest sincerity when we say that we hope your son Ferdinand makes it through unharmed" Sophia chimed in. "He seems like a truly honorable soul and it would be a great shame for the world to lose such a thing in these uncertain and sometimes unsettling times."

Constantine turned to his sister as she spoke and even with only the faintness of the moonlight and the slight glow from the lights from inside, he could still see a slight rosiness to her checks as she spoke of Ferdinand. He himself was not all together certain of either Karl or his son. The Austrians had potential, that was certain. However, the rather brutish display of power during the day and then the haphazard way they handled the rest of the evening left a lot of be desired of them. Still, Constantine was uncertain as to how much of the day's events were totally of Karl von Hapsburg's designs and were not influenced, in some way, by his now son in law. Margrave Adrian von Lebus was known for his rather brash behavior and though Russia had not been invited, Russian intelligence knew (to some degree) of the nature of a recent conference held by Adrian. German nationalism worried Russia greatly, if only out of how the Germans would treat the slavs which border their lands. Still, Austria was a virtual unknown to the Russians and perhaps it was best to have them as friends than enemies. Lord knows Russia was in no short supply of enemies..

"Yes Archduke we do wish your son the best" Constantine finally replied. "Detestable as he may be, we also pray for the recovery of Atratinus as well if only for political reasons. I will speak with the Emperor once we've returned to Moscow and tell him of your desires to speak with the Russian court. As I said, I imagine Ivan will be eager to discuss the peace of Europe as it is as much our concern as it is your own."

Karl von Habsburg could not have been made any happier by the pair's responses. The Archduke was pleased, yet he kept his composure hidden displaying only the faintest polite smile. While the signs of a budding partnership between Austria and Russia were still in their infancy, they were undoubtedly present and simply waiting to be cultivated. From Constantine's reaction, it appeared as though the Russians could be persuaded into believing that their shaky understanding with Porcu was not the most effective path to European peace. The Tsars of Russia and the Presidents of Porcu could pretend to see eye-to-eye when it suited their interests, however two major powers with vying ideologies would never be able to agree for long. Inevitably, Russia's path would stray from that of the Republic and then to whom would it turn for support?

Naturally, Austria would represent a likely candidate. Two monarchical empires who's borders weren't touching, who's agendas seemed to never contradict, and who's ideas for the future of Europe appeared in line would get along perfectly. All that was needed was a union of sorts, and as Karl gazed upon the young Duchess his mind hatched a brilliant idea. A inspiring as it was, however, the Archduke's plans would need to wait til his visit to Moscow whereupon he hoped to greet Tsar Ivan on equal footing. As emperors presiding over two historic empires, the two royals would hammer out the future of European peace. A new dichotomy for European politics was brewing just across the horizon.

"I imagine we shall have much to agree upon when we do meet face to face," Karl replied optimistically, "The Tsar's actions have been commendable as of late and Russia should rest easily knowing it has often had Austria's support. I foresee an easily maintainable peace between us, perhaps even more..."

By now Duchess Sophia was more rested and was ready to accompany her brother towards their limousine. The Archduke skillfully placed himself in a position of assistance and sincerely walked Sophia to the door upon his arm.

"As for Ferdinand," He whispered to her softly, "I'm positive your word's of encouragement shall bring him back to a position of strength in no time. We shall both be looking forwards to your radiance until we meet again in Moscow."

At the Archduke's remarks, Sophia smiled and her cheeks blushed slightly. As Constantine collected his sister from the Archduke, Karl gently kissed her hand whilst gripping the Grand Duke's hand in a powerful handshake. No more words were spoken, but the three separated under higher spirits than were had previously that night. For all intents and purposes, the Archduke had masterfully played the role of a leader. It appeared as though Austria's first monarch since Charles I in 1918 would in fact lead his country towards great things.

As the Russians departed for home and the night grew later, Karl's largest problems once again traveled to the forefront of his thoughts. With Atratinus now awake and his accusation of attempted murder still unsolved, the former Porcuian president could not be allowed to leave Vienna. With the seizure of the Loki platforms in Norway to boot, Austria's situation and the fragile European peace clung on by a thread. The next 48 hours would be a true test of the Archduke's new government's resolve and dedication to political legitimacy. Passing the last of his guests and some government officials, he declared the night at a close and ordered many of them to retire. The Hofburg, practically all of Austria, was placed under high alert and guards were placed in the infirmary to keep a watchful eye over Atratinus (Ferdinand and Eleanor would be transferred to a separate room). Atratinus was now formally a prisoner of the Austrian state.

Before he himself retired to the room housing his children, Karl issued one last communique of the night.

Encrypted Communique
Austrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs
To: Porcuian Ministry of Foreign Affairs
The Empire of Austria regrets to inform the government of the Republic of Porcu that its former president, Vopiscus Tarquinius Atratinus, has been detained by Austrian authorities following accusations of murder upon the royal couple, Margrave Adrian von Lebus of Brandenburg and Lady Eleanor von Habsburg-Lothringen. His condition remains stable and his access to an attorney has been granted, however communication outside his legal counsel has been denied at this time.

While it remains to be seen whether or not this act was a deliberate covert attempt by the Republic to disrupt the formation of the new Austrian government, a selfish act by Mr. Atratinus himself, or a fabricated hoax in itself, Austrian authorities shall work diligently to uncover the truth. Provided the plot was indeed an act of espionage, the Austrian government shall react with nothing short of war, whilst if the act was a personal attempt by Mr. Atratinus then he shall be persecuted to the fullest extent of Austrian law. While we understand the precarious nature of Austro-Porcuian relations at this time, and we continue to condemn the illegal seizure of the Loki Platforms by your forces, we offer up a diplomatic mission to be organized to discuss the current course of events. We eagerly await your reply.

The accusation of murder hit the political and social elites in Ariminae like a bomb. Humiliation was well within Atratinus' deck of cards, but murder? Of course, there were eccentrics who had been claiming for years that Atratinus was as ruthless as he was clever, but none of those fairytales were considered anything more than fodder for drunks whispering at a local pub.

Atratinus had many admirers, but few supporters, so the decision was relatively simple. Yet...

Official Communiqué

The Republic of Porcu finds the detention of former President Vopiscus Tarquinius Atratinus to be highly suspect and demands that as a member of the official delegation of the Republic sent on the occasion of the wedding that he be released to Porcuian authorities in Vienna. The Honorable Tarquinius Atratinus is a formal representative of the Parliament and People of Porcu and cannot be held as a common criminal within the Hofburg. Any maltreatment of Mr. V. Tarquinius Atratinus will be taken as an affront to the Republic herself.

Additionally, the Republic wishes to make its immediate disapproval of any Austrian-lead investigation known. The Republic will not accept any findings as legitimate unless they are conducted by a neutral, third party.

However, the Republic accepts the Austrian proposal for a diplomatic meeting and will immediately begin preparations for the arrival of an Austrian envoy upon confirmation from Vienna.

The Archduke sat at his lavish mahogany table enjoying a large private breakfast. He had spent a long and arduous night overlooking his son - checking his condition and contemplating his own next moves. Most of the guests had retired home or to rooms designated for them by the Archduke, however Adrian remained and enjoyed a small meal with new his father-in-law. The two had said very little to one another, but the Archduke knew what occupied the young Margrave's mind.

Before words could be exchanged, Duke Albert Zalesky II approached the Archduke and whispered the Porcuain reply in his ear. Karl stopped eating momentarily and chuckled to himself.

"In what realities do these people operate?" The Archduke asked rhetorically. "No matter, do you have a pen, your Grace?"

Official Communique
Austrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs

The Empire of Austria wishes to remind the Republic that Mr. Vopiscus Tarquinius Atratinus is being held based on charges of the gravest consequences, and therefore his status affords him little if anything above the already lavish conditions he is currently enjoying within the Hofburg. Mr. Tarquinius Atratinus, by Austrian law, has been allowed the counsel of his personal attorney, but any additional contact with the Republic has been suspended at this time.

Additionally, as we are sure the Republic is aware, any foreign national traveling within Austrian boundaries, commoner or diplomat, is subject to the official laws and regulations of the Austrian state, and by these laws, the severity of the charges levied against Mr. Atratinus shall warrant a formal investigation by Austrian authorities. The Republic's insistence for an investigation by a third party has also been summarily rejected as unnecessary. Should the supposed actions of Mr. Atratinus be of a personal nature, his trial shall be conducted under the Austrian Court of Law.

The Empire is pleased to have its proposal of a meeting with the Republic accepted. A small delegation shall be dispatched to Porcu immediately.

That Ariminae did not officially recognize the new government of Austria and therefore did not recognize the very laws of the Austrian state that kept Atratinus bound to the Hofburg was inconsequential in appeared. Porcuian diplomats has previously been granted diplomatic immunity within the East German Federation but already gone were the days of a pluralistic, liberal, democratic Austria - nevermind the fact that large swaths of the population were still digesting the seizure of power by Karl II and his band of autocrats. Political and social thinkers across the Republic felt that a counter-revolution was in order, despite there being no visible evidence.

Despite her own personal reservations, President Ardea Gularis could not ignore the shear voting block of her fellow socialists - let alone the communists - and those parliamentarians were dead set against a confrontation with Austria. However, the public had quite a different take on the developing situation in Vienna. If Karl II's power grab had struck Parliament like a ton of bricks, then the coup fell on the Porcuian public like a bomb. Social media sites were set alight by Porcuians angry with the overthrow of the government of a friendly state, and while there was wide support for a tough approach on the newly declared Empire, the taste of war was decidedly bitter.

It was decided that the Austrian delegation would be officially received in the small coastal city of Urgo, with the Austrians being brought by motorcar from the airport. There was quite some debate over who should head the Republic's own delegation, but Gularis exercised her executive powers in naming the one individual she could trust to lead the discussions - fellow socialist and senior Consul Servius Aemilius Cesca. For his part, Cesca had provided excellent leadership in Parliament and was widely respected by his colleagues on his ideological right. His past affiliation with Atratinus was helpful as he would know better than almost anyone else what Atratinus was up to, if anything. The Austrians were welcome at any time.

Meanwhile, in Vienna, Atratinus was resigned to the infirmary of the Hofburg palace as he continued to recover. Apart from the occasional twinge of pain, the former president was comfortable and able to rest well. Officially, Atratinus was not allowed any visitors, but considering that that particular list was quite small there was no worrying if an assistant of the Archduke poked their head inside to gaze at the figure that filled the nobility of Brandenburg with a blinding fury and the Austrian royalty with disgust and confusion. Eventually, however, Eleanor herself became curious and made her way inside the infirmary. Atratinus was reading when she approached his bed, the book being an obscure novel written during the latter days of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

"'The Lemon Grove'?" Eleanor said as she neared.

Without setting the book down, Atratinus peered over and replied in his typical soft tone. "It was the book provided when I asked the nurse for a book. She must have picked it at random, as I have never heard of the author."

"Your knowledge extends to Austrian literature?" Eleanor asked.

"When necessary..." At this point Atratinus closed the book and set it aside. He took a moment to clean his glasses before fixing his gaze on Eleanor. Her eyes still radiated and his absorbed. "What brings you by, Your Majesty?"

Urgo, Porcu..

Austria's dispute with Porcu had arguably faded from the forefront of discussion among the Austrian nobility. With a more immediate threat emulating from Constantinople rather than Ariminae, most of the attention and gossip had now shifted towards the Byzantines and the Balkans (even snatching the complete attention of the foreign minister). Even as Atratinus lay bloodied inside the Hofburg itself, most Austrians were more easily preoccupied adjusting their daily lives around the thousands of new policies and decrees being constantly churned out by the Ministries of Interior, Culture, and even the Colognian Catholic Church. Thus, when word did return to the subject of the Loki Platforms, Porcu, or Harstaad, many leading gentry in and outside of the Imperial court simply dismissed the issue to the Archduke.

Luckily for Austria, Archduke Karl II was as shrewd as he was foreword thinking. The principle reason he did not go himself to Constantinople was precisely the issue with Porcu. The events of the Viennese wedding and its aftermath had weighed heavily on Austria's new self proclaimed monarch, trapping him inside his study almost indefinitely and straining further the micromanagement already practiced by the Archduke himself. A war with Porcu threatened to drag Austria (and by royal marriage, Brandenburg) into a protracted engagement with neighboring Marslava as well. To make matters even more delicate, there were simply too many aggravating factors - Atratinus, Loki, Haarstad, and now the Balkans issue all threatened to engulf Central Europe in a war it was ill prepared for. This made the meeting in Ariminae that much more crucial and the decision of who to send that much more delicate.

Where President Ardea Gularis relied on a base of trusted seasoned advisors/diplomats, Karl II was surrounded by only a small cadre of loyal followers, many of whom he had serious doubts regarding the "cool-headedness" needed in these sorts of discussions. As domestic changes required the Archduke himself to remain inside Vienna, this left the Austrian delegation with only a few suitable candidates. Eventually, it was decided that Duke Jurgen von Pless, the newly appointed Reichskanzler, would head the delegation. Accompanying him would be Austria's ambassador to Porcu, Baron Kurt Wagner, who had just returned from Ariminae for a debriefing. Both men had spent a long and arduous closed door meeting with the Archduke and could be trusted to represent the Empire's stance on the coup, Loki, Atratinus, and relations with Marslava.

The flight to the Porcuian capital was a short and relatively pleasant trip. The two Austrian noblemen had flown AirPorcu - ironic, as Austria's own national airline was still in its infancy. Upon entering Urgo's small municipal airport, the delegation was spirited away by private limousine to the city's central bureaucratic headquarters. No fan fair, no crowds of onlookers (or protestors), no large welcome at all. So quick and efficient was the arrival, the Austrians began to surmise that the Porcuians wished to keep their visit a secret. This mattered little to Duke von Pless, who cared little for a country such as Porcu with its representative government and susceptibility and responsibility to the common man. For Baron Wagner, however, Porcu had been his area of study since university and he had learned to love the nation's unique culture since serving as the Federation's ambassador since before the coup. The calculated dichotomy was believed to be the perfect delegation to send - a sword in one hand and an olive branch in the other.

The limousine pulled up to the local municipal headquarters and the Austrians were shuffled into the building as quickly and as quietly as possible. As they awaited their Porcuian hosts, both men were offered refreshments and hors d'euvres which were much to their liking, especially Wagner who had thoroughly missed Porcuian food. The Porcuian delegation could arrive at any moment and already the Austrians were in bad spirits due to the manner in which they had been received and transported.

--------

Vienna...

Eleanor had found it refreshing to leave the company of her father and husband at times. It was not because she did not love them (although, she was still unsure whether or not she fully forgave them either), but the daily minutia of empire, state building, and European politics bored her often and she always yearned for fresh conversation. Her desires and curiosity were found in and welcomed by Atratinus. It was what intrigued her about the man at the debutante ball in Berlin and it was what persisted even after he had humiliated and aggravated her. Still, even though Atratinus was definitely severely disliked by Eleanor, she couldn't help but find his person, his upbringing, his situation worthy of discussion.

Atratinus' question did not take Eleanor by surprise and she responded calmly.

"Curiosity is all"

"Mmm and about what, my lady?" Atratinus replied in a condescending nature.

"Well, my brother stabbed you and you're a national pariah. Why wouldn't I come by?"

"Come now, you're too smart a girl to think I believe that. Why are you truly here?"

Eleanor sighed deeply and turned away. Even Atratinus, who always was so masterful at hiding his emotions, could not help but be captivated by the Duchess' beauty. However, as she turned his way again, he saw the scorn in her eyes. Pain resided there and it seemed to boil the longer he starred.

"I merely want know why, Vopiscus. What did you gain from mocking me at my own wedding? For all your calculations, all your supposed bravery, you end up here, injured and in chains. It seems like a pointless victory for you."

The spirit and manner in which the Austrians had arrived to Urgo had indeed been thought out in advance. From the delegation's hushed arrival to Flavius Calpurnius Aeditus International Airport to their subsequent hop over to the coastal city of Urgo via helicopter, Porcuian officials attempted to mask any scent of a critical meeting from the press.

The Austrians were treated as well as they deserved, which is to say terribly by Porcuian standards. On the list of insults, however, the location stood out as the greatest. The Baron was well aware of the fact, though the subtleties had passed by his superior. Eventually, the two Austrians were beckoned into another room. Alone with only a handful of documents in front of him sat the senior Consul of the Republic, Servius Aemilius Cesca.

The Porcuian rose when the Austrians entered, but remained planted at the head of the table. Baron Wagner frowned immediately when the Consul refused him and the Duke a courteous bow. The meeting place was a centrally located conference room that lacked any splendor and held only the flags of the Republic as a symbol of its official capacity. The Baron even took note of the lack of any crests or coat of arms on the walls - the city of Urgo was small indeed.

"Please, sit." Aemilius Cesca commanded in German with enough warmth to temper any immediate backlash from the Austrians. "I want to thank you gentleman for taking the time to meet with me today. I am Servius Aemilius Cesca, Senior Consul of the Republic of Porcu.

"It should come as no surprise when I say that the Parliament and People of Porcu are dismayed by the coup recently carried out by the Archduke Karl II and the usurpation of the legitimate, democratic government of the East German Federation. Additionally, the forceful detention of a Porcuian national and official representative of the Republic, referencing the Honorable Vopiscus Tarquinius Atratinus, is viewed by Parliament as an affront to the Republic.

"Nevertheless," Consul Aemilius Cesca said slowly, "President Ardea Gularis is hopeful that a path forward is available that frees Atratinus from Austrian custody, guarantees the security and safety of a free and democratic Marslava, and stabilizes the central territories of the Continent while promoting a peaceful Europe."

...

"Vopiscus Tarquinius, Your Majesty..." Atratinus hissed. The cultural intimacy attached to the use of only one's given name was too much for the former president - he could count on one hand the number of people that had addressed him in that way. He settled down immediately, however, and lay back to rest on the pillows which supported his back. "My efforts were far from pointless."

"You've not gained anything."

"Quite right, but why should I be the one to gain anything?"

"What is it all for then?"

"An idea..."

There was some silence, driven mostly by Eleanor's confusion at Atratinus' remark. The Porcuian continued, "By the way, embarrassing you was not my primary goal, so shed that illusion if you still cling to it."

The Austrians took their seats with a scowl on their faces. Baron Wagner had picked up on the vast majority of Porcuian insults, while to Duke von Pless the subtleties seemed to have gone over his head. Regardless of this fact, however, the Reichskanzler looked upon Cesca with a stern and unforgiving look.

Everything about Porcuians vexed him. Their pompous and self-elevated attitudes mixed with their love of parliamentarianism gave the Duke the lowest opinion imaginable of them. When this was combined with their political tendencies to intervene in the internal matters of others, von Pless found himself utterly repulsed. Had he been privy to Porcuian cultural politeness, the Duke might have been insulted to the point of leaving. Even the Baron had been finding it hard to cope with the long list of insults directed at himself and the Duke, especially when he considered the fact that the Consul likely knew the relationship personal honor and courtesy played in dealing with Austrians.

"Thank you," Baron Wagner replied once they had been seated and before Cesca continued further. "It is a pleasure to see you again, Consul. As you already know myself, allow me to introduce His Grace, Duke Jurgen von Pless, Duke of Styria and Reichskanzler of the Austrian Empire."

"Charmed," von Pless hissed with an accompanying faked smile. The Austrians then listened intently as Cesca continued.

"Let me begin by stating that Austria too desires a peaceful solution to our disagreements," the Duke responded after Cesca had finished. "Hopefully, the Republic was aware of this fact after Austrian forces neglected to retaliate militarily following the illegal seizure of our shared oil operation. As you see, Consul, Austria is not the only one to have acted illegally," Duke von Pless stated bluntly and partially in jest.

"Which brings us to our first matter of business," the Baron interjected wishing to derail any lingering hostility, "The Republic's opposition to the change in government inside Vienna. It is no secret that Ariminae refuses to recognize His Majesty Karl II's legitimate claim to the throne, and therefore his political legitimacy as Austria's leader. In this case, the Republic's criticism is misplaced as it was the East German Federation and its liberal predecessors which usurped political legitimacy from the Habsburg monarchy at the conclusion of the First World War. My sovereign was merely reinstating the legitimate rule destined for the Austrian people and reestablishing over 400 years of cultural tradition previously lost to an illegal show of force by foreign powers decades ago. It is the most sincerest hope of my sovereign that the Republic follows the example set by the whole of Europe and recognizes the new Austrian government."

___________

As was the case in Berlin, it was only a couple moments after Atratinus had spoken that Eleanor realized the true meaning behind his words. Suddenly, as least in her mind, it all made sense. Atratinus had not acted to personally embarrass the Habsburgs and herself specifically (although it certainly had succeeded in doing so), but rather the former president had taken a calculated risk for his Republic.

"No, Vopiscus Tarquinius, now I see," Eleanor replied careful not to address Atratinus incorrectly once again, "You have and always will act for the people and Republic of Porcu."

"Precisely, your Majesty. For an ideal the Republic shall always possess and something centuries of subsequent Austrian monarchs will never understand nor be able to overcome."

"I would have to disagree, naturally."

"Ah naturally, and why is that?"

"Because Austria is not without nationalism or patriotism. An entire generation bled and watched their country burn for the likes of Adolf Hitler because he harnessed the power of the mob. As terrible as that is, what makes you feel that Austria will be any different?"

"Conceited, aren't we?" Aemilius Cesca replied when the Baron had finished. "To begin, only the Margraviate of Brandenburg-Vorpommern has officially forwarded their recognition of the newly minted 'Empire of Austria', with any subsequent recognition being de facto in institutions such as ICON. The Republic does not officially recognize Karl II as the legitimate Head of State nor does the Republic recognize his government. Second, it was precisely your ancestors that launched Austria into a devastating war of imperialism and nationalism - the dissolution of the old Empire was a breath of fresh air for those of lesser stature, which is to say non-Germanic peoples. It is deeply troubling that you use the word "destined" - the Hapsburgs do not own Austria and have no more right to its future than a beggar.

"As for the Duke's remarks..." Aemilius Cesca continued, "The agreement regarding the Loki Oil Platforms was voided at the moment that the legitimate government of the East German Federation was usurped. The Republic therefore took control of infrastructure and resources that were not for your government to claim. And I'm happy to hear the Duke admit the illegality of his sovereign's actions."

"Still, there are presently a number of Austrian soldiers currently held up in their bases within Porcuian-held territory. You have every assurance that they are provided food and water and allowed access to medical care. The Republic is willing to return these soldiers to Austrian hands provided that Austrian forces in Harstaad are withdrawn and brought back to Austria. Clearance through Mons Calpe (Gibraltar) will be provided."

...

"Ha!" Atratinus replied with a burst of laughter. "And what has Austria done for decades after? Encouraged the myth that Hitler was German. That is not taking responsibility."

"Austria did not! She was well on her way to ascending the mountain of European influence, power, and prestige..."

"Until your narrow-minded father and your insecure husband thought it would be wonderful to plunge Austria back to the beginning of the 20th century!" Atratinus interrupted. "So conceited, those two."

Before Eleanor could reply the Porcuian continued, his voice rising.

"But let them have their empires, if that is what they desire, for it will be all the more sweet when the critical mistake is made and Vienna burns. Do you know what the defense expenditure of the Republic is, Your Majesty? Ehm? More than enough to singly grind Austria to the ground. The ball is in the court of the Archduke and the Margrave and you had better hope your father can reign in your husband."

"Conceited? Ha! It is you who would know the true meaning of conceited!" Duke von Pless exclaimed after Cesca had spoken. "You Porcuians are a bold race, indeed. Your leaders prance about the world as if they own it - intervening and prodding at will, causing trouble in places it is not your concern, and then they have the audacity to feign ignorance or, even worse, a stretched notion of justice. Was the sabotage of the Confederate merchant convoy for justice? No, certainly not. Porcu and Marslava may pretend all they like that their actions are for the promotion of democracy and freedom, but the fact remains that you do these things for the advancement of your Republics and your people. Ultimately, the only difference between Austria and Porcu is that Austria does not pretend its actions serve some grand and glorious ideal - we simply represent the side of yourselves you try your hardest to suppress, but cannot hide. You may not recognize my sovereign's government today, but it is of little consequence for no alternative presents itself nor will it for the foreseeable future."

"Now, as for Loki," von Pless continued Sternly, "Porcu has shown once again that it puts itself above the other nations of the world. The deal struck between Schlesinger and your representatives granted half of Loki to the Austrian people, and it is you who have usurped this right from us. Not only have you broken your word, you have taken a rash step towards actual war between us. History will show that it was the Republic, not the Empire, which lit the spark towards hostility."

"The Austrian soldiers who are bound to siege by Porcuian forces inside Loki are there by your actions and shall not be evacuated. Does it surprise you that another nation's soldiers will resist when their territory has been invaded? The same goes for Harstaad. The 40,000 royal marines stationed there will remain until you release the land you have stolen. Perhaps after you have released the Austrian side of Loki we shall allow you to maintain your side of the facilities as a show of good will."

------

Eleanor fell silent for a moment. Atratinus had been right about Adrian's brazen attitude, but he had underestimated her father. Karl II would never allow his carefully constructed goals to be hijacked or impeded by Adrian. Family was everything to a Habsburg, but their was a limit and Adrian wasn't even a Habsburg.

"Yes and my father does not jump blindly into a course of action where the outcome rests in serious doubt," she finally replied. "I find it hard to forget that it was the Republic which occupied Austrian property in Norway and it was you yourself, Vopiscus Tarquinius, that acted wrongfully at the wedding and by consequence garnered suspicion towards yourself. I can almost guarantee to you that the accusations against you would have not been entertained had you not acted so ridiculously yesterday!"

"Have you ever actually stopped to think that it is you yourself who is to blame for exacerbating situations, not my father, or Austria for that matter? You have been accused of murder, Vopiscus Tarquinius! Of myself and my husband!"

"Work is the curse of the drinking classes."

Aemilius Cesca slowly and deliberately took notes as the Austrian Duke replied. A moment passed before the Consul answered in turn. "If that is the official position of the Austrian State, then so be it. The Austrian soldiers will remain where they are and the entirety of the Loki platforms will remain in Porcuian hands."

Aemilius Cesca raised his eyes from his notes and gazed over at the Baron. However, his remarks were not exclusively addressed to Baron Wagner. "Let's discuss the detention of the Honorable Vopiscus Tarquinius Atratinus. I wish to make it absolutely clear that the actions taken with regard to the questioning and embarrassment of the Lady Eleanor by the former president are not condoned by this government. Yet, Tarquinius Atratinus' detention for attempted murder is ludicrous and laughable. That said, I hold no illusions that the Austrian state wishes to, and will, bring Tarquinius Atratinus to trial, so the Republic only requires one thing: a live broadcast of the trial in its entirety. I ask that the Porcuian public broadcast service be permitted to film alongside Austrian broadcasters."

...

"Would not have been entertained?" Atratinus replied in marked disbelief. "You are exceptionally naive. I can understand the Margrave's frustration, as I do like to toy with him, but his hatred is of an inextinguishable fire. That said, I do have to be thankful, for I could easily have been dragged to Berlin.

"As for making matter worse, no, I've done no such thing. Ardea Gularis was shortsighted in taking the Loki oil platforms, but that's a relatively minor mistake than will be remedied in due time."

Even with the occasional rush of pain Atratinus was stoic and calm. His demeanor irritated Eleanor, especially considering the situation he currently found himself in.

"What of the accusations leveled against you?" she asked.

"I plan to fight them, of course." the Porcuian replied.

"You don't seem concerned. You may live out the rest of your days in an Austrian prison at the very least."

Atratinus smiled to reveal pearly and sharp canines and turned towards Eleanor. "I'm not worried of those spurious charges." he said with the soft, almost effeminate voice his reputation knew him for. "Truly, the Margrave can be as stupid as he is angry."

"For now..," The Duke uttered under his breath as Cesca wrapped up the Loki discussion.

Baron Wagner looked at Duke von Pless after Cesca had finished speaking. The Duke nodded in the affirmative, giving Wagner the go-ahead to proceed with the Empire's position on Atratinus.

"Well, to begin, and as I'm sure you're aware, the Empire apprehended Mr. Tarquinius Atratinus following some rather heinous charges which do not grant him the privilege of bail and thus the ability to flee the Austrian state. You have made your opposition to his apprehension known, but try to understand that the very nature of the accusations made against the accused warrant a formal investigation and an unfortunate incarceration within Austria. While we are pleased to hear that Mr. Atratinus' actions were not sanctioned by your government, the charges levied against him are no laughing matter in the slightest. Perhaps, because it was my sovereign's family and not your own that was in danger, you fail to see the seriousness of the matter. Whether they be falsified or not, the gravity of the situation warrants a formal investigation and, if need be, a trial conducted by the Austrian Imperial Court."

"I feel you intend to portray us as barbarians, Consul," Duke von Pless continued. "Understand that Austria does not desire to murder Herr Atratinus in a 'show trial' simply because he embarrassed the Imperial family. To suggest such a thing merely aims to paint Vienna as uncivilized - something we find repulsive and ultimately resent. Justice will be upheld and if Herr Atratinus is found guilty of conspiracy to commit murder he will be punished to the fullest extent of Austrian law. That being said, we grant your request and shall allow the Republic's public broadcast service to transmit the trial in its entirety to Porcuians everywhere."

"Now, will there be anything else?"

-----

"Do you presume that my husband had something to do with the charges levied against you?" Eleanor responded in disbelief. "That is ludicrous, anyone with the faintest knowledge of your and his relationship could see there is mutual hostility. Its not improbable that you would attempt to harm him."

After Eleanor had finished speaking she fell silent. It wasn't until that moment that she realized that the resentment between Adrian and Atratinus ran parallel. When she began to analyze the nature of the incident, she couldn't help but admit to sharing Atratinus' skepticism over the manner of execution used in the act for which he was accused. Even Eleanor knew that Atratinus would likely have covered his tracks more expertly - no note would have survived. Unless one miraculously had, but had Atratinus actually written it?

"Who would benefit from inciting a war...?" She muttered to herself.

Consul Aemilius Cesca jotted down a few notes before replying. "I thank you, Your Majesties; the Parliament and People of Porcu will be eased by their ability to watch events unfold in Vienna. My request was very much to prevent a show trial, especially considering, as you mentioned, the extreme seriousness of the charges and the possibility of your sovereign being in danger.

"Yes, in fact, I do have more to discuss. Primarily, Marslava; the Republic is concerned that the sudden, violent change in government in Austria poses a direct threat to the Grand Duchy of Marslava, who is a 'Friend and Ally of the Republic'. Can you provide assurances that the Austrian state, in conjunction with the Margraviate of Brandenburg-Vorpommern, does not have designs on Marslavan territory or wish ill of the Grand Duchy? The Parliament and People of Porcu would be put very much at ease if a formal non-aggression pact was negotiated between Prague and Vienna."

...

Atratinus scoffed. "Then I amend my earlier statement: you are worse than naive, you are a fool."

Atratinus shifted in his bed before continuing, "Still, I ask you to remember when the Margrave disappeared during the coup and to consider the possibility that he fabricated the letter in that time. If you don't wish to spend the time yourself translating the letter with a Greek dictionary at your side, why not copy the letter and upload it onto the internet? Why not as an experiment? There are many language learning sites with a large number of Porcuians...surely they would be able to provide you with the most accurate translation of the text and to provide commentary on its grammar and syntax."

"What?!" Eleanor was shocked.

"Surely you remember what King Maxentius IV had to say?" Atratinus added.

"Unfortunately, the letter has been seized as evidence." Adrian said as he entered the room. Atratinus grimaced and look towards the windows.

"Has the Serpent been whispering lies into Eve's ear?" Adrian crossed the room to Atratinus, grabbed him by the collar and struck him in the mouth. "If you ever come near my family again, I will kill you. I don't know if your letter was real, but you are coming with us to Berlin, for your trial." Adrian threw the summons at Atratinus as he lied on the bed, shocked at Adrian. Verbal threats were one thing, physical assault was another.

"Eleanor, let's go." He took her hand and they left the room.

Atratinus had only not fallen straight off the bed by grabbing the metal handle that was attached to the side of the hospital bed. The Porcuian massaged his jaw and spat out just a few drops of blood. As hot as the Margrave's hatred was, Atratinus had become used to others holding the young Adrian back and, unfortunately, believed himself immune to direct assault. Things had changed - Atratinus thought that he may just have gone too far this time. Additionally, the former Porcuian president had counted on his inevitable trial being held in Vienna, with the sane Austrians, and the sudden thought of being held at the mercy of the Margrave while in Berlin did send a chill down his back. Atratinus' only reprieve came with the knowledge that Ariminae would be even more on guard when it was made known that Atratinus would be transferred to Berlin.

"Not lies." Atratinus said, having straightened himself in the bed. His cold, grey eyes found those of the Margrave's. "Only skepticism."

Both the Margrave and the Lady Eleanor left a moment later without so much as a word.

The Austrians looked at one another in disbelief, then a small yet revealing smile began to appear across their faces.

"Are you not aware?" The Duke replied, his smile beaming. "We tried that."

The consul appeared confused, so Baron Wagner cut in.

"Yes, I'm afraid his Grace is correct," he continued as he shifted in his seat. "Austria did reach with outstretched hand to the Great Duchy directly following the transfer of power. As a matter of fact, we offered the exact same agreement you are pitching too us currently - and the Marslavans ardently refused. Surprising, we know, as Austria offered this agreement in good faith and with no strings attached. We merely wished to come to an understanding with your allies regarding the future of Central Europe - one in which we envisioned without conflict between Vienna and Prague. We still desire this and we would be up to extending this same offer again. Also, while we cannot guarantee ultimately that our own allies will not instigate conflict with Marslava, my sovereign will vow to do all he can to dissuade any aggressive acts from Brandenburg."

Duke von Pless smiled and folded his hands on his lap. "Perhaps, your own administration should look internally about all its doing to avert conflict in Central Europe? Because, quite frankly, too us it appears that the Republic and the Great Duchy are the ones standing in the way of a greater European peace."

------

Eleanor locked eyes with Atratinus as Adrian pulled her away into the hallway. The spectacle had revealed to her that Adrian was not as innocent and Atratinus was not as guilty as they had first appeared. There was something strange about the entire affair the more and more she thought about it and she was tired of being called and treated as an ignorant girl. Her father was the Archduke of Austria for God's sake! It was high time she commanded some respect.

She pulled her hand away from Adrian in annoyance, then she pushed him gently towards the wall.

"I am your wife, Adrian! Your wife, as well as the Grand Duchess of Austria and I deserve some respect. I need to know that what he said isn't true in the slightest. The slightest!"

Adrian sighed, "Of course its not, my dear."

"Look at me, Adrian!" She commanded, "I'm asking you one last time.....is it at all true?"

Adrian's gaze changed from compassion to flat detachment. "This is not the place to discuss such things."

Eleanor stood shocked for a moment. "So it is true then? Adrian von Lebus, you answer me, here and now!" She shouted.

Adrian, despite his actions to Atratinus, was not an angry man. Only the Porcuian set the young Margrave off. Eleanor was acting indignant, and rightfully so. Adrian could not endure the anguish he would have from striking her, nor could he withstand the wrath of his family-in-law. He would not strike her, and the thought made his normally stoic conscience waver.

He took her aside. He could not disarm her, so he tried to conscript her.

"Atratinus is a bastard. He deserves every ounce of punishment he gets. He did not write that letter. I did. But I did it protect us. Do you not see his threat? He would have come after our families eventually, that burgher snake would have all royals killed, do you understand? I had to strike first."

Adrian babbled on a for a while, but he was unsure of whom he was trying to convince.

Eleanor watched sympathetically as Adrian rambled. Once he had finished his tirade against Atratinus, she gathered a few moments to collect her thoughts. Clearly her husband loved her as much as he hated Atratinus, yet in all his love and anger the Margrave had overlooked a few very important facts. No matter how dire the situation for Adrian, Atratinus' trial would never be allowed to take place in Berlin - a fact made abundantly clear by Ariminae's and Vienna's stark opposition to any such claims. Additionally, now that Atratinus was certainly not guilty, his trial would be for show and, provided his innocence becomes known, her father would be portrayed a fool. No one had to think long and hard about how the Archduke would respond in that regard.

Eleanor sighed deeply, "Adrian, what we're you thinking!? Not only is that man in there innocent, but he practically knows you fabricated that letter! Worse still, you have now conscripted me into your plans! I don't.....I don't know if I can carry this burden from my father."

"You mustn't my love!" Adrian begged. He even fell on his knees and grabbed her hand. "You would kill me!"

"This can't be happening," Eleanor stated, her conscious wavering. "And how do you expect to get him to Berlin from here? My father would never allow it!"

"I doubt that the Marslavans would have turned down such an agreement." the Consul replied. "Their disagreement must have been related to a fundamental disagreement with your definition of an 'understanding' regarding the future of Central Europe. For example, does your sovereign have designs on Hungary or Rumania? The Republic is well aware of Austrian designs on the Balkans, but that is a secondary threat to our allies. Additionally, while you may play off the Margraviate as a full and equal partner, it is well understood that Karl II is the real power in the partnership. Considering the recent bonding of your Houses, the Republic holds Vienna fully responsible for any provocations or acts of aggression made by Berlin."

Consul Aemilius Cesca paused a moment to remove his glasses and to carefully fold them and place them in front of him. "Mr. von Pless, the Republic has done nothing except protecting its own interests and that of her ally. Continue to bear that shit-eating grin and you will find real cause for offense when you are forced to find your own way back to Vienna, without the aid of state transportation. I assure you that you won't get far very easily having to explain who you are, especially not the way you're dressed."

"Herr Consul, you mus-," Baron Wagner attempted to avoid an argument, but was cut off by a swipe of the Duke's hand.

"So this is how the Republic responds when faced with its own arrogance?" Duke von Pless stated, displaying his grin. "No, Herr Consul, I will resume my 'shit-eating' grin as it pleases me to witness how upset it makes you. Austria has chosen to meet with you in good faith, yet from the moment we arrived you have treated us with great disrespect and arrogance. You should not feel insulted when we return it to you in earnest."

"As I feel discussion has gotten us virtually nowhere, and as I've grown weary of your presence, I will attempt to wrap this up as quickly and eloquently as possible. Austria has no designs on Marslavan territory - a fact with which we thought self evident with our offer of a non aggression pact. My sovereign bids no ill will towards the Great Duchy nor towards the Republic; however, your actions against us have proven this to not be a mutual feeling on your part. While we would abhor conflict with either of you, we will not sit idly by as our territory is seized from under us, or our affairs are meddled in. Take that as our warning now - we will have Loki again. As for our allies, I have assured you we will do what we can to control young Adrian von Lebus, but he is a difficult and imprudent boy. Why, you should thank us already for what we have done to protect your man Atratinus from his wraith."

The Duke rose from his chair and patted his tunic with one hand, whilst rearranging his sword around his waist. Baron Wagner sat motionless with a soured look upon his face. At least an agreement on filming the trial of Atratinus had been agreed upon.

"I imagine you'd be surprised how far a few gold coins can get you in a strange land," Duke von Pless replied with accompanying grin. "This shall be an experience we won't soon forget."

Adrian charged into Karl's office in a rage.

"If that fucking bastard will not stand trial Berlin" he bellowed, "then I demand I be made Justice of the trial here!"

Adrian and Eleanor's discussion earlier had reached little progress. She agreed to keep quiet, but she demanded Adrian find a way to control the sizeable amount of damage done here. He knew how, but it would require some "executive" meddling.

Karl, sitting at his desk, was visibly surprised when the young Margrave entered the room. Adrian continued:

"That man has threatened me, my family, and my honor and I demand being parlay to his demise!"

OOC: Whal, I know how to tie this up in a way that advances everyone's goals and keeps all the characters alive, if you'll let Arian lead the trial.

Consul Aemilius Cesca quietly returned his glasses to his face and scribbled a few more notes. "No, it won't be."

In addition to their nobility and social standing meaning nothing to the average Porcuian, farmer to taxi driver to businessman alike, it was most likely the case that any attempt to pay their way back to Ariminae and the airport would been seen as humorous lunacy at best - these two jokers must have run away from their caregiver - or a bribe at worst - why would an official diplomat be trying to find rides?
