-- KNS Special Report -- The Imperial Communications Ministry has just informed all news agencies that His Imperial Majesty, Maximillian Xavier V, has breathed his last. He was 54. His death is believed to have been caused from complications of his paralysis that he has suffered since the war. Born as one of three triplets to Emperor Kristophe Xavier I, most of his young adult life was spent in exile in Cologne after Gassel's rise to power. He commanded the monarchist forces under the tutelage of Prince Lionel Karschburg of Vjerrs and stood against Gassel and later the Dominion. Late in the war, he suffered an assassination attempt. Though he survived, the attempt had partially paralyzed him and left him bedridden henceforth. As such, he has stayed out of the limelight since the war, preferring to let the Grand Parliament handle day to day affairs. He is survived by his wife, Her Imperial Highness the Empress Consort, and his four children, the Heir Apparant and soon to be Emperor, Kristophe Xavier II, Prince Maxmillian Xavier VI, Princess Seraphina and Princess Katrina. His Excellency, Prime Minister Ludwig Schraff, has ordered all businesses shuttered and Parliament closed for the next three days in mourning. The Imperial Household will meet later to declare a regent while Kristophe Xavier II remains in minority. The Emperor's body will be lying in state for the next week to recieve official visits and condolences. He will then have a state funeral at the Imperial Crypt in Kaisarbhavan north of the capital. More as news breaks. This has been a KNS special report. |

At the Grand Cathedral of St. Basch, the Emperor's body laid at the front of the altar in a glass coffin, in full imperial regalia and clutching a sword, a custom only done for those who had fought in war. Leaders from all over the world arrived, among others. It was the first day of the week he would be held in state. One of those others was dressed in a black cloak. He earned a few looks from the priests and nuns, but stood there like he was meant to be there. And he was. He had already, discreetly, checked in with certain members of the Imperial Household, those who knew his identity and could keep a secret while also ensuring he didn't recieve difficulty. He got in before the other guests had arrived and walked up to the coffin, touching his hand to the glass just above the Emperor's face. "Brother," he said quietly, "I'm sorry I was away all these years. I had to avenge Jules. May you rest in peace, both of you. I shall adventure on both your behalf. I take my leave of you now, but you shall remain in my heart." And with that, the cloaked man left, with no one the wiser. ------------------- - KNS Live - We're here in front of the Sapphire Palace, residence to the Imperial Family, and we see tens of thousands holding a vigil which we hear will last til the Emperor is buried and his heir is crowned. At the moment, His Imperial Majesty lies in state at the St. Basche Grand Cathedral, where many guests both local and abroad come to pay their respects. Security is tight.... |

Crown Prince Ferdinand Zvonimir Hapsburg-Lothringen, heir to the Austrian throne and a distant relative to the Kasnyian royal family, entered the cathedral with a respectable escort of retainers. The young Hapsburg's presence went relatively unnoticed in the packed main chamber, as Ferdinand preferred that his arrival be left unannounced in respect for the quiet ambiance of the event. Modesty was not usually one of the Prince's exhibited characteristics. Walking slowly toward the emperor's body, Ferdinand glanced at the large chamber around him. Indeed, it was a breathtaking sight to behold. How magnificent Maximilian Xavier V's wealth and prestige must have been to possess such a lavish funeral. Ferdinand scowled slightly in response, for his own future was still susceptible to the whims of the Parliament and the commoners who presided there. Well, at least for now. Ferdinand's scowl soon became smile as he relished the day he would sit atop the throne will real power. Some day very soon...... He politely bowed in respect to the deceased emperor as he came toward the glass. Crossing himself, Ferdinand said a quiet prayer for Maximilian Xavier. "Requiescat in pace", he whispered before making the sign of the cross again and turning to leave the altar. In truth, his visit was not merely to pay his respects to the dead emperor. For a while, the Austrian Hapsburgs were without strong allies abroad, and Ferdinand still remained unmarried. His arrival to Kasnyia would also serve to potentially remedy these setbacks, for Austria would once again regain her former glory, but she needed allies to assist in that endeavor. Ferdinand sat to the side and calmly observed the crowd. |

Ludo, as was custom for a prime minister when the Kasnyian lords were to be put to rest, was acting as the Master of Ceremonies both for the visitors lying in state and the funeral that would happen later. As such, he greeted the noted guests who had arrived, including the Chiron monarch and the Austrian prince. He knew why the former had come, but was not yet clear why the Austrian had come, though there were some distant relations through the former German Emperor. Still, he asked him anyway if the young man had ever seen the capital before. He would give him a tour....and see what he wanted. |

Ferdinand's quiet observation of the crowd was interrupted by the man who now stood directly in front of his line of sight. He would have dismissed the man entirely had his quick glance not noticed the man's flag lapel pin. Indeed, this fellow was the Kasnyian Prime Minister, and therefore Ferdinand would grant him his attention, albeit on a minimal level. Oh, What had the man asked him? Something about seeing the capital? "No, regretfully I have not", Ferdinand answered begrudgingly, his attention still fixed on observing the room. "It is quite beautiful here, though." |

As they talked, the Emperor's second son, the Prince Max came within a few feet of the coffin but then began to breakdown. He turned around just as quickly and ran out of the cathedral, tears streaming. Nobles and high level government officials started filing in to pay their last respects. |

Soon other members of the Imperial household arrived. The Princess Seraphina and Princess Katrina arrived, their faces stone, but with evidence that they had been weeping. They had both been very close to their father, and the younger one, Katrina, was sad that her father would not be able to give her away, though there had been rumors that the Emperor had been about to give his youngest child's hand in marriage before he died. Then came the cousins of the recently deceased Emperor, daughters and grandson of Eduard Xavier II, near death himself. First was Eduard Xavier IV, his grandson and heir, and his unwed daughters Sabine and Marie, in their mid thirties. At one altar, the Heir Apparant was talking to his uncles, Grand Dukes Rufus Xavier IV, Alphard Xavier III Theodor Xavier I, Philip Xavier I, Wilhelm Xavier V, and his aunts from different and distant branches, Maria and Geraldine, both in their late twenties. And then finally came the members of House Mondroviheim. Related to the Imperial Family by marriage into a nearly extinct junior line of the family, started from a cousin of the recently deceased Emperor's grandfather, of which the unwed Geraldine and similarly unwed Alphard Xavier III all that remained, the Mondroviheim Family was not well liked. They had, as of late, become the champions of the Protestant cause within Kasnyia, ferverent followers of the Kasnyian Brotherhood of Baptists. However, the Emperor, when he had been alive, had been respectful of them and they him, and thus had come to pay their respects. |

Ferdinand allowed his gaze to wander throughout the Prime Minister's words about Guranburg's glory. Shifting between nobles, religious figures, and the Emperor's son's breakdown, The young Austrian's eyes fixed themselves upon the procession which had just recently entered. The Kasnyian Imperial household recaptured Ferdinand's interest and he began taking mental notes of who was who. His knowledge of Kasnyian lineage and succession was rather incomplete, and in truth, Ferdinand was unsure who was being groomed to replace the dead emperor. Eventually, his eyes settled quite naturally on the beauty of the ladies Maria and Geraldine, both of whom were slightly older than what Ferdinand was looking for, but still were exquisitely beautiful. Perhaps, the Prime Minister could serve some purpose after all? "Mr. Prime Minister", Ferdinand inquired, interrupting the man mid sentence, "Perhaps, you might be able to assist me with something?" He continued, eyes still focused on the royals, "Which of those gentlemen are to replace, his majesty, and what can you tell me about them?" OOC: Ferdinand is more-or-less wondering how the new Kasnyian emperor will behave. Essentially, what's he like? Religious/political beliefs? Edited by Whal, Dec 11 2013, 10:44 PM.

"His eldest son, Kristophe Xavier II," Ludo replied, wondering to himself if the Austrian ever bothered to see the news, "His Holiness, Pope Bartholomew III will coronate him within a fortnight, But he is currently a minor and so the Household will be trying to choose a regent for him. Who it will be is not yet known." He pointed out to the various cousins and uncles, waving out his hand for emphasis, "Grand Duke Eduard Xavier II is the oldest of the ruling branch of the family, brother to the Heir Apparant's grandfather. He is a dutiful man, but known for his temper. He is the best possible candidate for the regency, but unfortunately is too sickly." "His grandson on the other hand is a good candidate, but too young." "Alphard Xavier III is a recent convert to Baptism, which has put him out of the running. Even if he hadn't, he's too distant from the ruling line and he's too close to the Mondhroviheim family. Likewise with Grand Duchess Geraldine, though at least she's useful for marriage." "The other uncles are just as distant in relation. It's the Empress consort who currently has the other strong candidature. But we'll see." OOC- The heir is in his mid teens. And except for those connected to House Mondhroviheim, they're all Colognian. |

"Ah, yes Kristophe Xavier II", Ferdinand responded, the name ringing a few bells. The fact that the soon to be crowned emperor would need a regent was interesting to him, and Ferdinand wondered which individual would be most supportive of the Hapsburg's return to the world stage. Despite Kasynia's distant location and past isolationism, they were Germans, and their protectorate in Cologne could be useful in gaining the support of the new Pope. Indeed, Ferdinand was also curious as to how the current leadership in both Guranburg and Cologne viewed his country's current political system. Would Kasynia prefer working with a Hapsburg, rather than Chancellor Schlesinger? "Tell me, Mr. Prime Minister", the Prince continued, "How do you predict the future leadership will view my home country of Austria, or her current political system? Some would say Schlesinger's Federation leaves much to be desired.." |

The ceremony had not been seen in many decades. When the previous Emperor, Kristophe Xavier I, had died, he had been fleeing Gassel's thugs across the eastern seas, his body lost to the abyss. Due to that and the political situation, only a silent vigil could be held. Now, the state funeral was to be held again, for the War Emperor. Many guests from across the realm and across the world had come in attendance. A casket of sandalwood held the body of Maximillian Xavier I, with only the third of it's top made if transparent sugar glass. The entire casket would be cremated, his ashes placed in a wrought-iron urn of intricate calligraphy describing the Emperor's eventful life, where it would then be placed alongside his ancestors at the Imperial Crypt of Kaisarbhavan. |
