PRESIDENTIAL AND PARLIAMENTARY ELECTIONS SET; MASSIVE TURNOUT SEEN AS CRITICAL Posted Image Ariminae, PORCU - The world's attention again focuses on the Republic as millions make their way to vote in numbers not seen since the election of late president Julius Nixonianus, also known as Nixon the Younger. Voters have plenty to consider this election cycle: recent additions, Porcuian provinces in the Mediterranean have brought the ire of the Confederacy of Middle East Socialist States and Scythirus; ICON continues to fumble for relevancy, though a recent proposal by the Republic may see real change in the organization; a costly religious war has seen a massive number of dead, injured, and displaced in the neighboring Papal State of Cologne and Karlsburg; the healthcare service as seen spiraling costs continue, as structural reforms initiated by President Atratinus were stalled in Parliament. Additional domestic issues are at the fore of this election, and were primary fodder for the presidential candidates during the single debate that aired two weeks earlier. In that contest, no clear winner could be said to have emerged. Messrs Aemilius Paullus, Cornelius Scipio, and Valerius Cato clearly held back, possibly in the hope of appearing above the standard political jabs and blows typically delivered during a televised audition, while Mr. Crassigensis was as fiery as ever - slamming his socialist rival continuously and speaking well above the moderator's voice. Ms. Gularis has enjoyed a very comfortable lead and is expected to top the table, yet a final election victory may remain elusive just as it did against the former Republican Party candidate Lucius Germanius Cea, who defeated the incumbent socialist president in the runoff election. Second place is fully considered to be a toss-up for any of the other candidates. Below is a brief introduction to each candidate, highlighting their stated priorities: Manius Tricostus Priscus - Popular chairman of the parliamentary group Liberal and Democratic Reformist Bloc. Supported many of Atratinus' reforms, even rallying fellow liberals to support largely symbolic cuts to parliamentary pay and healthcare privileges. Domestically, Mr. Priscus opposes an additional rise in income tax rates and has promised to push Parliament to halve them. Supported the Republic's entrance into the Papal War and has sounded tough when speaking on a possible confrontation with the CMESS and Scythirus over the Gibraltar incident. Canae Ardea Gularis - Possibly her last attempt at the presidency, Ms. Gularis' positions differ little from her party's platform during the midterm elections. General investments in education, green technology, and the health system would be covered by current tax levels, considering the drop in defense spending following the Papal War; however, Ms. Gularis has called for a new fund that would provide assistance to those from the working class and the poor to attend university. Opposed the Republic's entrance into the Papal War and hopes to trim the defense budget of the Self-Defense Forces. Publius Cornelius Scipio - Current Consul of the Republic, curiously enjoys a great deal of support from Green rank and file members, probably by pushing for a national board that would approve all environmental projects and extend the projects to the overseas provinces. Supported the Republic's involvement in the Papal War. Calls for a more active role for ICON in settling international disputes. Lucius Aemilius Paullus - The only truly registered independent running, strongly opposes Gularis' proposed downsizing of the Self-Defense Forces and actually pushes for increased funding. Supports initiatives to curb State involvement in various markets, including the energy market which is booming thanks to a recently negotiated partnership with the Federation of United Eastern German States. Considers an empowered ICON to be essential to managing future international conflicts. Publius Villus Crassigensis - Veteran and current Secretary-General of the Communist Party of Porcu, Mr. Crassigensis takes the same position as Gularis with regard to the Papal War. Proposes steeply progressive national income tax rates, relieving those in the bottom 10% from paying any income tax at all (metropolitan or national). Would continue spending cuts in defense, while increasing spending on healthcare and education. Supports complete nationalization of energy conglomerations. Publius Valerius Cato - A political novice, Mr. Cato also supported the Republic's entrance into the Papal War, providing some of the most outspoken criticism of the Genesisian Catholic Church. Opposes "excesses" of Atratinus' reforms and has proposed an expanded Parliament to mirror newly added provinces in the Mediterranean. ... Questions from news organizations and journalists are welcome. Yes, two votes for parliamentary and presidential choices is correct. The presidential election will most likely require a runoff election (with a single vote option), so look for that on Tuesday (5 Nov). Should it be necessary, I will create a new poll for the Presidential runoff election and will run it until the same Saturday (9 Nov) I will close the Parliamentary poll. |

GULARIS ROARS IN FIRST ROUND; PRISCUS TRIES ORGANIZING 'ANTI-GULARIS' COALITION Posted Image Posted Image Ariminae, PORCU - Capturing an impressive 40,9% of the vote in the first ballot, Canae Ardea Gularis is well positioned to capture the presidency for a second time, though Centrist Party Secretary and Liberal and Democratic Reformist Bloc Chairman Manius Tricostus Priscus hopes to defeat Ms. Gularis by attempting to create a grand coalition against her. The results from the first round are as follows: Canae Ardea Gularis (Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats) - 40,9% Manius Tricostus Priscus (Liberal and Democratic Reformist Bloc) - 22,7% Publius Cornelius Scipio (Independent/Non-Partisan) (Independent/Non-Partisan) - 13,4% Lucius Aemilius Paullus (Independent/Non-Partisan) - 12,6% Publius Villus Crassigensis (Communist League) - 9,1% Publius Valerius Cato (Independent/Non-Partisan) - 1,3% In particular, Mr. Cornelius Scipio's impressive performance caught many analysts off guard, since he has had little time in which to make himself well known to the Porcuian electorate. Contrarily, Mr. Villus Crassigensis had been polling consistently between 12-17% and was thought to play a major role in deciding the second-place finisher in the first round ballot. However, it appears that a late campaign gaff, one in which the Communist Party Secretary referred to members of the Self-Defense Forces as "trigger-happy children" and as "pawns of the entrenched nobility", cost him a significant amount of support. Eager to push forward, Mr. Tricostus Priscus addressed a large gathering of followers in Ariminae today with words of encouragement. "We're almost there...Now, it's time to set aside the things that needlessly divide us and unite to push forward this next week. Recently, the Republic has been in capable hands thanks to President Tarquinius Atratinus, but its time to chart a path that will bring jobs to Porcu, that will continue to see our educational system as the envy of the world, that will see our national interests abroad defended with the best trained and equipped forces." Ms. Ardea Gularis, on the other hand, was content to sit on her performance for a day before returning to the campaign trail in hopes of securing a second term in the second ballot one week from today. "The Socialist Party Secretary spent the day yesterday with her immediate family and was eager to celebrate her performance." Ms. Gularis' press secretary said to reporters. "She is equally eager to return to the trail and to speak with as many Porcuians as she can." The path to victory in the second round appears straightforward for the socialist, but the memory of a terrible performance in the presidential debate against then Republican Party Secretary Germanius Cea, only a few days before that critical vote, must still sit in her mind. "[Gularis] greatest mistake that last election was not her debate performance, though that did lose her a significant amount of ground, but rather her inability to aggressively target her opponent on the issues." Professor Lucius Aemilius Bonono, Professor of Law at the Metropolitan University of Vercellae, commented in a recent television appearance on the PBC. "She doesn't want to appear angry, but she cannot allow Tricostus Priscus to gather steam; otherwise, she will lose this election." In fact, Mr. Tricostus Priscus has already gathered a great deal of support, mostly from voters of the Republican Party and the Conservative Party of Porcu, but that may not be enough. The Centrist Party Secretary has visibly reached out to Green Party voters and even some centre-left leaning democrats, but polling has yet to determine if they will support him in large numbers. Crucially, it may well be communists who decide this election, as their numbers alone can provide a significant boost. However, their participation past the first ballot, historically, is low. Still, if Mr. Villus Crassigensis makes it known he'd rather have a socialist as president than a centrist then the fate of Tricostus Prisus is sealed. ... Current Polling Advantages/Disadvantages (Presidential) Canae Ardea Gularis (Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats): + 1 Manius Tricostus Priscus (Liberal and Democratic Reformist Bloc) +/- 0 OOC: This last poll will be open until Friday. Sincere thanks to those that have voted thus far (please vote again!) |
