Pad frowned at the rows upon rows of identical buttons consideringly and shook his head. "The dwarf said to ride the elevator to the bottom of the mine and ask for directions," said the elf. "I don't think he mentioned anything in particular about this... thing," he added, glancing at the bottom of the elevator as if he could see through the floor to the claustrophobic depths below. |

"Well, to hell with it!" Glrch pushed the third button from the left in the bottom row of buttons and waited to see what would happen, arms folded. |

The sound of turning gears could be heard, and something seemed to lock into place. Then, suddenly, the cage began descending. Slowly at first, then with increasing speed. Most of the floors they passed were dark, while a few were well-lit, creating a kind of strobe-light effect inside the elevator. Through the bars of the cage, the adventurers were able to catch brief glimpses of jump-suited dwarves on the illuminated floors. The speed of their descent kept increasing until it seemed the floor itself was falling out from under their feet, and they experienced the momentary sensation of free-fall. The elf, the gnome, and the barbarian seemed to float above the floor of the cage for a moment, wide-eyed and fearful of the possibility that Glrch had chosen wrong and that they were plunging to certain death. Instead, they began decelerating. Their feet gently returned to the floor, and the lift came to a smooth stop on one of the dark floors. The cage doors opened. Padrielor held his breath as long as he could as the lift descended deep into the mines, then let out a sigh. He then unlimbered his bow, and nocked an arrow, half drawing it as the door opened. The bow was not an ideal level for the closed in spaces of the mine, but it was better than nothing. |

Reflected light from the floors above scarcely penetrated the dimness of the floor on which they had stopped. The adventurers stood in a patch of twilight on the edge of a deep darkness. The sound of machines could be heard droning high above them, while the emptiness ahead of them seemed eerily silent. Pad lit his bullseye lantern, revealing a wide hallway extending into the distance and curving in a slightly upward and rightward direction. The walls, floor, and ceiling of the hallway seemed to consist of smooth stone, as if the tunnel was expertly and precisely carved out of the solid rock. The adventurers stepped out of the cage and into the hallway, only moments before the cage door closed and the lift shot upwards again. Edited by East Anarx, Jul 9 2013, 11:50 AM.

Glrch peered into the darkness ahead. He could only make out the smooth walls of the tunnel, but nothing else. "Well, Barbarian, lead the way, I'll have your back," said Glrch, as he moved behind the large man. |

Fenris unsheathed his short sword and grasped for his battleaxe, keeping the sword in his right hand and the axe in his left. He took his place slightly in front of the elf, enough so that he would be able to use both weapons while allowing Pad a clear shot. |

Ready for combat, Fenris, Glrch, and Padrielor made their way forward through the wide, curving hall. The gentle bend in the walls prevented the adventurers from seeing more than a few dozen feet ahead, but it reflected the light from Pad's lantern much further than that, giving away their position. They had little choice, however, as the alternative was to stumble around in the blind darkness, and so they kept the lantern lit. The sound of the machines dwindled into the distance behind them and a new sound became audible, apparently coming from somewhere further up the hall. This new sound, quiet at first, was high-pitched and seemingly random, and as it grew in volume it was soon accompanied by what sounded like raindrops on a roof, or perhaps hundreds of fingers tapping on the walls. Whatever it was, it was drawing ever nearer. The adventurers tensed as it seemed the sound was about to be upon them. Suddenly, a multitude of rats emerged from around the bend, barreling down the hallway toward them, squeaking and running over one another. The rats were frantic, and most seemed interested only in passing by the adventurers and continuing their fearful retreat down the hall. But some of them were wild-eyed and frothing at the mouth, and these dove at the ankles of the adventurers, trying to bite them or run up their legs. |

Glrch laughed, and began talking to the animals in the Speech of Burrowing Animals, telling them to stay away from the humans. Meanwhile, any appearing wild and uncontrolled, he hacked to pieces with his sword, both near him and the feet of his companions. "See!" he said, in their language, "what happens when you get close to us!" |

Glrch's speech seemed to register with some of the rats, who gave the party a wide berth, and a few even bothered to squeak, "thanks for the heads up," but most of them seemed too scared to listen. Fenris suffered a minor wound from a particularly vicious rat that latched onto the back of his leg before Glrch knocked it off him and the barbarian sliced it in half with his axe. By the time the tiny stampede had passed through, each adventurer had the blood of many rats on their weapons and boots. The remaining rats scampered away down the hallway, leaving a trail of little turds in their wake. The adventurers continued on, and they noticed that the hallway narrowed slightly. The walls lacked a smooth finish here, instead consisting of roughly cut stone with visible tool marks. A little further and they came to a fork in the path. Ahead and slightly to their right, the hallway continued on roughly the same arc they had already been traveling. To their left, a narrower tunnel led down and curved away in the opposite direction. |

Fenris shrugged off the pain of the bite, focusing more on the adrenaline coursing through him. The rats woke him up, made him more alert. He could feel his blood beginning to boil, and sweating with the excitement of the battle to come. Peering ahead in the wider tunnel, Fenris spoke. "I assume we should be killing what those rats were running from. We would have a better chance if we followed the wider path anyways, more room to swing." |

The barbarian took the lead and they continued following the wide, curving path. As the party rounded the bend, they noticed a dessicated dwarf skeleton laying slumped against the side of the hallway. A few shiny coins and a rusted short sword lay nearby. Next to the remains, a cluster of round, slimy, grey-green somethings, each about the size of a fist, were attached to the wall.

As Glrch reached down and pocketed the 6 Silver coins, one of the round growths on the wall suddenly shivered and burst open, releasing a puff of green, foul-smelling vapors. Then, something dropped out of the opening, and began wriggling its way toward Glrch.

The trifold attack was more than enough to annihilate the tiny deepwurm. The sound of the metal weapons clanging on the stone after slicing through their low target reverberated throughout the space. Then, suddenly the cluster of globe-like eggs shivered in unison and all of them burst open at once, releasing a substantial cloud of noxious green gas and at least a dozen deepwurms. For being freshly hatched, the wurms were surprisingly fast and aggressive, and five of them swarmed Glrch while he was still coughing and recovering from the fumes. Four wurms went after Fenris, though he stood taller and so had managed to avoid breathing in as much of the noxious gases. The other wurms spread out quickly in different directions, along the walls, floors, and ceiling of the tunnel. Some seemed to be trying to escape down the hall in either direction, while others seemed intent on making a meal of their new visitors. |

Pad nocked another arrow and fired into the mass of deepwurms that swarmed around the other members of the party, keeping a close eye out for any that might attempt to make a meal of him as well. |

Glrch recovered quickly from the stench, though he felt nauseated. Quickly, he jumped away from the wurms swarming after him, and began slashing at them again. Then, the nausea got the best of him, and he vomited right on one of the wurms. Again, he recovered, and continued to slash out. "We need to burn this tunnel out," he shouted over the commotion, "any ideas?" |

Pad shrugged. "I don't think we have enough lantern oil to make much of a difference. The dwarves may have something flammable or explosive lying around down here," he mused. "We have to be careful that we don't destroy anything though. I, for one, intend to collect the rest of the money Stonebelly promised, and I'd rather not have to pay for any... damages." |

The adventurers successfully hacked, slashed, and arrowed their way to victory against the swarm of vicious deepwurms. Fenris sustained only a few small bites from the wurms, and Glrch was unscathed, aside from his mild gastrointestinal distress. A few of the deepwurms escaped around the bend and into the darkness of the tunnel ahead, though Pad did his best to pick them off with his bow as they retreated. No longer under imminent threat of attack, the adventurers took a moment to examine these so-called deepwurms more closely. The wurms were about two inches in diameter and about six inches long, and their business end seemed to consist of a number of concentric rings of razor-sharp teeth, (the bloody little circles dotting the barbarian's legs were evidence of their effectiveness); they lacked eyes, as far as the adventurers could tell. There was nothing explosive or flammable-looking anywhere within sight, just plain rough walls of stone, and the party was left considering whether to continue moving forward after their prey or turn back and search for combustibles. "I've a very queasy feeling," said Glrch, "that these are newly hatched. Now, I wonder, just how big do they get, and where is the mother wurm?" With that said, Glrch barfed one more time, unfortunately, on the barbarian's shoes. "Oops, sorry about that, as I said, I have a queasy feeling!" |

Pad grimaced at the mess now mounted on top of Fenris' shoes. "I can't say I've had much cause to affiliate with deepwurms in the past," said the elf, "but I imagine we should probably follow the few creatures that escaped down the tunnel." |
