Private Prison Debate
By Charles Gennessey
Translator Aabish Mahdavi

The most recent legislation to come out of Decorum makes it legal for private prisons to be set up in Damien and Debbagh.

"Persons who commit the most heinous [of] crimes should be commited to the most heinous of punishments. May God have mercy on them", stated Archbishop Midfield after he was questioned about the brutality at Damien Centre Penitentiary in Damien province.

To make a bad situation worse many in the Islamic hierarchy have stated that Muslims have been singled out and brutalized in these facilities. Surprisingly Allamah Al Hakam Shamoon who was in favor of the prisons called for the issue to be pushed to the top of the agenda at Decorum.

Hundreds of inmates have been subject to 'medieval' punishments as one civil rights lawyer who wishes to remain anonymous stated. Citing claims of whipping and that 'inhumane' conditions were common.

President Bishara, who signed the legislation, could not be reached for comment, however his Honor in charge of the economy, Hassan Daher, stated that, "Dahkeid's economy needs a jumpstart to get it going and he doesn't see what all the fuss is about as private prisons have been a part of the western world for years." He continued," Why should Dahkeid be criticized?".

"Despite the debate the prisons are uplifting Dahkeid's economy", stated his Honor of Staff Clyde Archer, however the government will not release quarterly reports showing exactly how much the economy is improving leaving many a bit frustrated due to the horrible economic conditions as of late.

Many question the vast plots of land that were bought in advance and the construction at both locations that had been completed seven months ago despite the fact that legislation had not been in place until last month, not to mention the fact that the prisons have held inmates in that timeframe.

Some have gone even farther still stating that the corporate owners of Damien Centre Penitentiary and Debbagh Detention Facility were in violation of the Political Fairness act passed in the 3rd year, feeling that both parties involved must of pushed the government to pass legislation and manipulated them in some way.

Still others say there is just too much on the agenda and that the government is overwhelmed. Ghazi Baba, his Honor of Urban Development, stated that, "Between patrioting everyone from the clash, building up the infrastructure, education, healthcare, administration, public safety needs [sic]. There is just too much to do. Its not advisable to go out at night because all of the police forces are volunteers and aren't there 24/7!".

Despite the whirlwind of controversy it looks like both facilities are here to stay, at least for the time being.

Peace. Fairness. Equality.
