Gervas Luther, a Colognian preist, had enough of both Churches. Their blatant hypocrisy and corruption had gone too far. He was done. He had thought this for a while, but the recent goings on in Africa gave him hope. He gripped in his hand a mess of paper he had been working on for weeks now. He left his monastery for the last time, in secret, the night before. He now walked toward the Colognian Oberpfarr- und Domkirche. He took a hammer and nail and attached half of his bunch to the door, drawing a small crowd as he did so. There were many whispers, one man yelled something about blasphemy. Gervas ignored him. He walked across the city to the Genesian Kaiser Wilhelm Church. He repeated the process, to much the same results. Across the Cologninl city, a preist heard the commotion of the crowd, and stepped outside to see what was the matter was. As he opened the door, a mob ran in, carrying the list Luther had made. Various shouts and yells echoed in the Basilica, and the preist was pushed back onto the bema. He took the papers from someone and cried out: "Calm down, my children! Sit down, what is this fuss about!?" "Father," someone in the crowd said, "read the papers! They tell of blasphemy!" The father began to skim the papers. "Who did this?" He asked, look up from the document. "A priest of the church, father." a different person in the crowd answered. The preist began aloud... "Our Lord and Master Jesus Christ, when He said Poenitentiam agite, willed that the whole life of believers should be repentance. This word cannot be understood to mean sacramental penance, i.e., confession and satisfaction, which is administered by the priests. Yet it means not inward repentance only; nay, there is no inward repentance which does not outwardly work divers mortifications of the flesh. The penalty, therefore, continues so long as hatred of self continues; for this is the true inward repentance, and continues until our entrance into the kingdom of heaven. The pope does not intend to remit, and cannot remit any penalties other than those which he has imposed either by his own authority or by that of the Canons. The pope cannot remit any guilt, except by declaring that it has been remitted by God and by assenting to God's remission; though, to be sure, he may grant remission in cases reserved to his judgment. If his right to grant remission in such cases were despised, the guilt would remain entirely unforgiven. God remits guilt to no one whom He does not, at the same time, humble in all things and bring into subjection to His vicar, the priest. The penitential canons are imposed only on the living, and, according to them, nothing should be imposed on the dying. Therefore the Holy Spirit in the pope is kind to us, because in his decrees he always makes exception of the article of death and of necessity. Ignorant and wicked are the doings of those priests who, in the case of the dying, reserve canonical penances for purgatory..." |

OOC: This takes place some time after the ball, but feel free to still roleplay that as if it were before these events. Margrave von Lebus sat in the library with his fiance, Eleanor. They both were reading quietly, Adrain sitting in his favorite chair and reading a book on Divine Right and the rule of kings. He smiled, thinking of arguments and counter arguments for why he had the right to rule. He didn't know what Eleanor was reading, but she quietly enjoyed it, he thought to himself. Antoine Lombardy and Gebhard Buchler both walked in, the court chaplains of the Genesian and Colgnian churches, waled in. In a rare moment of agreement, they addressed Adrian. Adrian noted their passivity to one another and decided something important must have happened. "What is wrong?" He asked they two holy men. "This," Antoine handed him a copy of the list. "A preist from the Colonian church nailed this list of complaints to the doors at the Berlin Cathedral and at Kaiser's Church." Adrian and Eleanor looked over the list, nodding occasionally and studying every detail. "Well, boys." He said, finishing. Eleanor kept reading the papers, but Adrian, continued. "You've got quite the struggle on your hands." "You're allowing this to continue?" Both priests said, shocked. "I allow you two to continue, don't I?" Adrain said, smirking. Eleanor giggled. "Unless I'm at sword point, I don't intend to adopt any state religion unless it will greatly benefit me or the state." Adrian stated plainly. "You are a vulture and an opportunist, are you aware of this?" Gebhard said. Adrian again only smirked. "Leave us." he said. "You're interrupting our reading." Both left and sent messages to their respective religious heads explaining the situation and the Margrave's reaction. This would not end well. |

The apparent scandal in Brandenburg-Vorpommern passed over the millions of Porcu in relative silence. The Genesisians were quiet, mostly out of fear of retribution - the screams and scenes from the Teutonic chemical attack still lingered. The Colognians were shocked. Just when general opinion had begun to turn in their favor due to the conduct of the Papal War there was this...priest...who had tired of the old order? For those that paid attention or cared, events in Northern Germany signified something important, though they were unable to elaborate on what exactly that something was or would be. Of religion the Republic had tasted its fair share hundreds of years ago and found its present situation much better. Still, there were priests who looked to Brandenburg-Vorpommern with hope. Ever cautious, patience would be the word of the day. |

Message of the Archi-Bishop of Prague Six-hundreds years ago my people, led by the great priest and theologician Jan Hus, contested for the first time the hypocrisy of the Church. Then, the oppression of the Church came down through the hands of the Holy Roman Emperors and Marslava knew an age of civil war and unrest. We emerged from it, washed away from any hypocrisy preached by this Church and we believe in what Father Gervas Luther has had the bravery to write. The Marslavans also emerged from this period with the firm belief that religious tolerance was the only way through which another age of darkness could be avoided. For these reasons, I would like to invite Gervas Luther, to come to Prague if he ever feels that he ever receives threats because of his teachings. |

Gervas Luther stood in front of the great staircase leading up to the Margrave's Villa. He gulped. In less than an hour he would enter the Margrave's council chambers, debating with other theologians, each trying to convince Margrave von Lebus to ban the other religions, or at least to remove their presence from these great halls. Meanwhile, the monks of Luther's monastery fled. Automatic gunfire shattered windows and the serenity of the peaceful place. The Genesians diverted a small troop of Crusaders from Cologne to the heretical church, and they set about looting and burning the small establishment. Some were killed, but the majority fled. They knew they would not be safe in Brandenburg as long as there was this turmoil. Some fled to the East, to the Sectors and Livonia. Most, however, fled North to Porcu and Stockholm. Adrian von Lebus overlooked the preparation of the council chambers. He had sent envoys to both Cologne and Rome, and also had sent for Luther, the interloper who stoked fires of dissent. He would simply watch from a small balcony seated above the chambers, observing the debate, nothing more. He watched as the delegations of theologians and priests filed in and took their places in the large, grandeur room. Luther stood almost alone in the section roped off for his Gervasian allies. Gervas hated that term, Gervasian. He thought it stood against everything he was teaching, the reverence of God above Man. Opening statements were given, and the Council of Brandenburg had begun. OOC: I'd like if Scy and whoever is controlling Cologne at this point to represent their respective churches and their reactions, if that's alright. |

OOC- Cologne won't be able to give an authoritative response til a new Pope is chosen and I can't do that til the war officially ends. Also, don't expect Cologne to respond all that roughly: The Colognian sect is basically the modern Roman Catholic Church of the real world to the Genesian old school Catholic Church that burns people at the stake and the like. However... IC- Cardinal Richard O'Malley, head of the Order of Colognian Jesuits and current spokesman of the Church, wishes dialogue with Gervas Luther and his followers. The Church of Cologne has always dedicated itself toward the poor and to reforming the backwardness shown in the behavior of certain other sects. As such, if this priest has complaints, he should be heard and discussed. |

After this situation has come to my attention amidst the strife of the present Crusade, I must henceforth declare a public condemnation of this "reformation." This Gervas Luther, originally a practicing heretic of the schismatic Colognians has drifted even further into Satan's arms by seeking to create his own church. Just as misguided as his fore-bearer whom shares his namesake a hundred years before, his "reformation" is nothing but a sinful descent from God. Protestantism is nothing more than the folly of humans indulging in their own lusts and sinful pleasures, ignoring the Commandments of God. - Pope Castillo, Sovereign and Bishop of Rome |

It had been weeks since Gervas presented himself in the Council of Brandenburg. His appearance convinced many priests to defect, and already Berlin was swarming with Protestant. But all was not well. Gervas and his small group of clergymen were forced to flee across Poland by Catholic riots. Many called for his execution. The original plan was to flee to Marslava, but German settlers in Silesia cut them off. Hearing of men protesting "No Popes in Germany! in the Baltic State, Gervas Luther made the decision to move North, across Lithuania and into Livonia. He hoped that his sect could save many from the Church and that he could survive. Once in Livonia he could raise a summit of all Protestant churches in order to form a united front against the Catholic menace. |

The Mondroviheim family of Bahen, though all the way in Kasnyia, looked upon this Gervas with great interest... |
