MIDTERM ELECTIONS MAY BRING SURPRISES

Stockholm, Porcu Proper - Parliamentary midterm elections have arrived and promise to be interesting, if only in highlighting the various shifts that have occurred recently in national politics.

At the top of the list of new developments is the split in the political camp of the Right, where the Conservative Party has broken its ties to the Porcuian Republican Party, setting up a series of intense elections that will have implications at the metropolitan assembly level, as well as at the national parliamentary level. General Secretary Sextus Julius Flaccus explained his party's decision as one of ideology.

"Unlike the republicans, we conservatives do not oppose discussion and necessary cooperation with the liberals, democrats, and socialists out of hand...The Republic has a great deal to be fixed and the Conservative Party feels it can be a constructive partner at the local, metropolitan, and national level."

The split, drawing increasingly colorful language from members of the two parties, has markedly bettered the chance for conservatives at the polls compared to the republicans. Despite efforts at obtaining comments on Mr. Flaccus and the conservatives the headquarters of the Republican Party instead released statements regarding the upcoming election.

"The Porcuian Republican Party, as the last haven for true conservatives, is confident that voters will provide their support to our principles and proposals...Our opposition to the advances of the Left has in no way been compromised."

As usual, the centre-right and centre-left coalitions are drawing the most support and maintain comfortable leads. The latest polling suggests that no clear winner will emerge from this parliamentary election and that a search for a governing coalition will be necessary. Both Ms. Gularis and Mr. Priscus have indicated their support for Mr. Atratinus to remain as Prime Minister, though there have been hints from the Left that motions to bring about an early presidential election will be submitted to the new Parliament. Mr. Atratinus did not make himself available for comment.

Despite his tendency to avoid the television cameras and flashing bulbs of the photojournalists, Mr. Atratinus carries a surprising amount of support from the population at large. Nearly 65% agree with the statement that Mr. Atratinus' assumption of the Presidency was necessary in order to maintain order in Parliament. The duel President-Prime Minister enjoys an approval rating of close to 57%, and loses a direct presidential runoff election to only two candidates: Gularis and Priscus. Nonetheless, Mr. Atratinus has given little reason to think that he will seek the presidency.

Provided below is a short summary of the coalitions and parties vying for seats in Parliament and their respective positions on a few key issues:

Communist League: Regarding the current papal war and crusade the communists are entirely against the war and wish to totally withdraw the Republic from the conflict. The communists are scandalized by the recent creation of two classes of citizenship (1st and 2nd class) throughout the Republic, the second of which provides for most rights, liberties, and privileges except that to vote in Parliamentary and Presidential elections. The Communist League seeks higher punitive taxes on the wealthiest 10% of Porcuians and the creation of a comprehensive welfare program.

Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats: Regarding the papal war the socialists and leftist democrats are of the opinion that the Republic should not have entered the war to begin with, but now finds itself in a position where withdrawal is not a viable option. The socialists are determined to reform the tax code within the parameters of previous legislation, hoping to raise the tax rates on the wealthiest 3% of Porcuians. The centre-left coalition is pushing for more financial support to be provided to the overseas Special Administrative Regions (SARs) so that their infrastructure and public institutions are at the same level as those within Porcu Proper.

The Greens: The greens totally opposed the creation of the super highway, or transportation corridor, now being built between Narvik SAR and Porcu Proper. They also hope to pass legislation forcing a decrease in drilling for oil, minerals, and natural gas. The greens have forwarded proposals to reclaim dilapidated urban areas and turn them into parks and nature reserves, suggesting to fund such projects by a general, across the board increase in taxes that would be temporary in scope. The greens are also totally opposed to the crusade and desire for an immediate end to the conflict.

Liberal and Democratic Reformist Bloc: The liberals and democrats are reluctant supporters of the current papal war, seeing no benefit to Genesisian control of the Danish straits. The liberals and democrats hope to pass comprehensive education reform and to bring a slight reduction in certain taxes. The centre-right coalition generally supports the division of Porcuian citizenship, arguing that it is something to be earned. They have suggested that those with Porcuian citizenship, 2nd class may be awarded Porcuian citizenship, 1st class after serving in the Self-Defense Forces.

Conservative Party: The conservatives are adamant supporters of Porcuian involvement in the papal war, stating that the Republic stands in real danger of being dominated and overrun by religious demagogues. The conservatives are arguing for sharp reductions in taxes and in spending on infrastructure projects. Compared to the republicans, the conservatives are willing to maintain funding for certain public programs such as that for free daycare for young working couples and parents. The conservatives applaud Mr. Atratinus' efforts at increased military spending, but feel that still larger increases in defense spending are necessary to keep the Republic safe.

Republican Party: The republicans are also strong supporters of the decision to bring the Republic into conflict with Genesisian nations and stand by the conservatives, and many liberals and democrats, in arguing for higher defense spending. The republicans are also strong supporters of the two class division of citizenship, stating that barriers regarding language and culture must be overcome. The republicans have pushed for making Latin and classical Greek the only official languages of the Republic.
