Major Omar Suleiman had fought hard over the past weeks. The collapse of Rome and the subsequent chaos in the CMESS had caused a major stir, but things were now coming under control. The major event had been the large Anatolian invasion by Confederate forces. Omar remembered being within spitting distance of Istanul, before they were repulsed by the new "Romans." Omar had personally decided that this new, successor stated could not be Rome, and this was the case in most of the Confederacy, at least according to the State Press.

The Major scratched his beard. They had been fight continuously until yesterday, when the false Romans finally fought the Turks back.

The Turks still held the line, but it was nowhere near what the Chairman promised when he spoke if "restoring order" to the Roman provinces. What Omar was confused most about though, was the diplomatic Limbo the Pseudo-Romans and the CMESS were in. Are they at war now? Is there even a Roman nation, or are these just scared soldiers clinging to a fallen Empire? Omar didn't know, but he ordered his men to hold position and defend this line. He hoped they could come to a solution.

Official Communiqué

The Parliament and People of Porcu do not recognize recent military operations undertaken by the Confederacy of Middle Eastern Socialist States as legitimate and regard the occupation of central Anatolia as illegal. The Republic asks Confederate forces to return to their borders until such a time that those populations wishing to join the Confederacy have been polled and a free and fair referendum on the question has been undertaken.

The Confederacy wishes to remind Porcu that the CMESS has had custodial ownership of the Anatolian wilds for some time, and this was recognized by the late Roman emperor. Anatolia's population of Turks and Turkish-speaking peoples are under Confederate protection. The Confederate army will not stand down.

Evidence verifying such claims of custodial ownership are requested, firstly, and the willingness for all - including non-Turkish - populations to be joined with the Confederacy must be shown via a referendum open to international scrutiny and oversight, secondly.

The support of the Emperor in the Confederacy's Anatolian affairs was purely oral and mutually understood by both nations. The Roman Ambassador Aldeberan handled the negotiations with the Chairman himself, and if he could be found would confirm as much.

The Confederacy suggests the Republic of Porcu stand down, before this situation spirals out control. A referendum is unneeded and the hypocrisy portrayed by Porcu illegitimizes any complaints they may have. Do the men and women living in Porcu's overseas colonies wish to be under a Porcuan Yoke?

OOC:
Theodore Aldebaran was actually pretty well known in Porcuian government circles. Consider him AWOL for the time being, though if you want to do a story around finding him, I think that might be fun.

Reference to the SARs as "colonies" highlights Confederate ignorance, for said territories are one and part of the Republic. Furthermore, during the era of the HPCO, and the EU before that, great care and effort was taken to verify the wishes of the local populace. As an example, the people of Xianyang voted in five separate referendums over many years.

A referendum is absolutely needed - the people must speak.

The Grand Duchy of Marslava cannot recognize the expansion of the CMESS as long as a fair and free refeendum is not allowed to take place.

The CMESS will reiterate that we had custodial ownership of the region long before annexing it. The territory belonged to us de facto long before the fall if the Empire. If the CMESS claim on Anatolia is illegal or illegitimate, then we had no authority to grant the Marslavans Sinop, illegitimizing the Marslavan territory as well.

In addition, Marslava has said it recognizes the Confederate claim on Anatolia, per Article 5 of the Recognition and Non Aggression Pact.

The Sultanate of Deondir officially refutes any claim that CMESS is making towards the whole of Anatolia as parts of it belong to our people. We would also like to state that CMESS claim to the Anatolian wilds is supported by the Sultan Esref the 5th.

Official Statement
East African Federation
The Federation of East African Nations strongly condemns that actions of the Confederacy of Middle Eastern Socialist States for their rampant and flagrant imperialism over Anatolia. While the Federation will not dispute the facts pertaining to mutual agreements between the Confederacy and the Roman Empire, the free regions of Anatolia and the people inhabited therein deserve a chance to speak for themselves, rather than allow foreign powers to speak on their behalf.

For this reason and this reason alone we strongly urge the Confederacy to reconsider their tactics and instead, hold simply referendum amongst the communities effected. If it should be required, the Federation is more than willing to assist in this endeavor and can send teams from our own Boundaries and Elections Administration as well as our Institute on Governmental Procedures. Highly qualified for such matters, such a team could ensure a free, fair, and speedy referendum which would easily put this question to rest.

-Bahta Sherifo
General Secretary of the Federation

TO: Chairman Muhammad Al-Judidi,

The situation in Anatolia has not escaped the gaze of Moscow and the Russian Empire feels that it is necessary our two countries meet at the earliest possible time before the situation in the region escalates any further. To that end, we wish to dispatch an ambassador to Trebizond immediately to discuss matters we feel simply is not prudent to discuss over correspondence alone. We shall eagerly await word that safe passage has been granted.

The Emirate of Al Whaladya will officially recognize all territory recently seized by the Confederacy of Middle Eastern Socialist States. While all recent expansions will be regarded as legitimate Confederate territory, the Emirate requests that no further territory be seized until the matter is moved a public referendum. We strongly urge the Confederacy to maintain the safety and stability of the region by ceasing hostilities.

Additionally, the Emirate offers safe haven to all persons fleeing encroaching combat conditions. All armed personnel are to be disarmed when passing through Whaladyan territory.

The Government of Semitistan recommends that a referendum is immediately presented to the inhabitants of Anatolia to see if they wish to be represented by the CMESS. This is purely for the sake of stability in the region and to prevent any further conflict. Should the CMESS expand without a referendum, the government of Semitistan recommends a human rights commission from ICON be sent to the area, with representatives from nations around the Middle East, and monitor the situation as it develops.

The Republic of Salik applauds the endeavors of the Confederate government in establishing order in an otherwise anarchic land. The Confederacy of Middle Eastern Socialist States has the full backing of the Salik government, although it requests that the land in Northern Syria is kept relatively demilitarized for the sake of friendly relations. While the Republic of Salik recognizes the Confederate claims as legitimate, it urges that a referendum is in the least considered, as it can do little harm but legitimize your claims in the eyes of the world.

The Republic of Salik is highly interested in pursing bilateral relations with the Confederacy. For too long the Middle East has been under the heavy hand of the European powers, and it is time for a shift in power. Our government would like to request a meeting between our ambassadors, to discuss our proximity and general relations.

English Translation of a Statement from Imperator Flavius Valerius Sabbatius Constantinus Augustus

I must warn the Turks that their expansion into Anatolia, rightfully Roman lands, puts them at risk for a war they cannot possibly win. However, I shall admit that the current state of the Empire does not currently allow for reintegration of those lands, and I do not wish a needless war. If the Confederacy of the Middle Eastern Socialist States shall agree to pay a tribute of 5000 pounds of gold ($128 million) a year and expand no further, I shall recognize their expansion. If the Turks do not agree to these generous terms, I shall have no choice but to oppose their expansion with force.

The Confederacy of Middle Eastern Socialist States does not recognize Emperor Flavius Valerius Sabbatius Constantinus Augustus as emperor of the old Roman Empire, and considers his claim as such to be an insult to the Romans.b However, the CMESS is willing to negotiate with the Empire. The New Empire's terms are unacceptable, and a single tribute of $200 Million is all the Confederacy will pay.

The Confederacy reject these hollow threats and reminds the New Empire that the Turks marched on Constantinople once, and we are capable of doing it again.

The government of Dahkeid expresses concern over CMESS' recent military actions in that they are endangering the prospect of free economic trade between, not only Baghdad and Istanbul, but the rest of the Middle Eastern States.

Namely being the prospect of reopening the Baghdad Railway; which is of paramount interest to Dahkeid.

OCC: Hope it's alright I jumped in here. :)

Through government back channels, the Baltic State passed a confidential message to the CMESS. The Baltic State offered to establish a paramilitary Freikorps, consisting of Baltic German volunteers, conservative and reactionary mercenaries from other parts of the German world, and various other soldiers of fortune. The Anatolian Freikorps would fight to establish and maintain CMESS rule in Anatolia against any opposing powers. In exchange, the CMESS would provide the Baltic State a fifty percent share in mineral exploitation rights in the new Central Anatolian territories.

While the CMESS highly appreciates the help offered by the Balts, we find it unnecessary at this junction. However, that being said, we would like to keep these channels open, perhaps for future use.

Following recent threats by the Porcuians concerning the Strait of Gibraltar, the Scythirian Navy deployed several fleets in the Mediterranean after passing through the Suez Canal from the Red Sea and Gulf of Adan. There they would request docking at CMESS ports in exchange for guarding their shipping fleets from Porcu.

After they were authorized, Scythirian ships commenced docking with CMESS ports, helping assure the country that the Empire would hold its shield between them and the abuses of Europe. Scythirian vessels would be throughout the immediate future escorting the CMESS merchant fleet to ensure that they remained unmolested by European powers. Any attempt by Porcu to prevent CMESS shipping through the Strait of Gibraltar would have to go through their Scythirian escorts first.

And such an act would likely lead to war....
