"Ah, an interest in Russian you say" Constantine said to Princess Cornelia, no doubt alleviating some pain she felt from her rather odd and abrupt remark. She responded with a gentle nod of agreement as she sipped her champagne. "I learned a bit of Latin myself during my studies" Constantine said with a gentle smile. "Of course, we can discuss more as we dance, if my lady will so oblige me?" Cornelia naturally agreed and after handing her glass off to a waiter, she and Constantine took to the floor. It was as much Constantine's indulgence, having not taken the opportunity to dance himself yet, as it was his duty to dance with Cornelia. After all, both of his sisters were on the floor and he felt compelled to keep as best an eye on them as he could, especially after the earlier incident. "Tell me Princess, have you done some studying yourself? What interests have you taken up in your home country?" Constantine inquired. The Conversations were a bit the same with Sophia and Elizabeth, all three Romanov siblings making small talk with their dance partners, engaging in questions to suit their own inquiries into the lives of the Porcuian royals. After all, in a republic there seems so little room for royalty and given they have no official power, they wondered what it was they did to pass their time. |

Adrian was enjoying himself. He liked the music, the company was good, and atmosphere of the room was quite pleasant. Among the guests were the Royal Family of Sinan. Adrian thought well of them, he hadn't anticipated any sort of alliance with a nation a continent away. He greeted the family but quickly left them to the mercy if other, more curious, guests. He made his way toward the stage. He breathed in, nervously. He used a rag from his breast pocket to wipe some sweat off his brow. He regained his composure as he neared the stage. Adrian had made his decision... Across the room, Rudolf was chatting with the Baltic gentlemen. He was very curious about them, but one question hung at the back of his mind. Are they truly Germans? He dare not ask that question aloud, however it still stayed and ate at him. He repressed the thought, and continued speaking with the young men. "May I ask of your stations, sirs?" Rudolf asked, trying to make conversation. |

Adrian took one last deep breath before walking on the stage. He slowly approached the microphone situated on the center of the stage. He looked out over the crowd of guests. He smiled."Is everyone enjoying themselves?" Adrian asked. A positive response made Adrian grin. "I thank you all for attending the ball, but you all had a reason for coming. I've come to the decision of whom I will marry."Adrian looked down for a moment. He look back up. "Eleanor, will you please come on stage with me?" She slowly walked up the steps. Adrian took her hand when she reached the center. "You've been a friend to me for a long time. And, you and God willing, I would like you to be my wife." |

The Counts Frantisek and Natalia Přemysl entered the wonderfully decorated ball room just after the announcement was made. Seing that there was no waltz taking place they asked, as discretely as they could, to the group of Porcuian just next to them:"Did we just miss something important ?" |

Archduchess Eleonore was stunned when Adrian called her name up to the center of the stage. She had long anticipated this moment since the concept of marriage with the Margrave was first suggested by her father several years ago. As her hand met his, a sense of almost childish joy ran through her body. She hesitated for a brief moment, recalling recent events, before finally speaking. "Oh Adrian...Yes. Yes I will." Soon after giving the Margrave her answer she embraced him and kissed him quickly on the lips. The response conjured up a wave of applause from the room, minus a few disgruntled royal fathers who quickly saw a closer relationship with the Margraviate quickly fade away. Although many of their daughters were only slightly disappointed, for many had begun conversing with the other young men of title at the Ball. For Karl II of Austria, the marriage of his only daughter made him extremely pleased, and a single tear fell down his left cheek. Close behind, Ferdinand nodded in approval whilst he contemplated his own marital future. Farther still, Osterriech's Chancellor Klaus Schlesinger clapped his hands, mainly out of respect, but also let out a sigh of annoyance. What do these royals believe this marriage will accomplish? he thought. The Chancellor had all the real power in the Federation, and any formal relationship between both nations would be through his government's words, not Eleonore's womb. No matter, he supposed it was at least some form of a start. His attention quickly focused to other matters. Meanwhile, Eleonore and Adrian still resumed their polite infatuation on stage. |

Adrian and Eleanor held hands as they left the stage. Adrian was beaming with joy. Eleanor was a beautiful woman. While they were leaving, Adrian turned to her. "I owed you one, right?" He said. Rudolf shook both of their hands. He introduced Adrian to the two gentlemen from the Baltic, who congratulated Adrian on his decision. Rudolf handed Adrian an envelope. Adrian and Eleanor approached Ferdinand and Karl. "Karl, please take this private letter. I would like to stretch that this is a private letter. Parts of it are it not to be shared with... Members of the government." Adrian whispered, glancing at Chancellor Schlesinger. "Thank you for attending the ball, and for bringing Eleanor." Adrian looked at her and smiled. "We need to plan the wedding, and I would like Eleanor to stay in Berlin with me until then, if she would like. I look forward to seeing you again." Adrian said to Karl. Adrian left Eleanor with her family while he went to the stage to close the ball. "Thank you all for attending my Debutante Ball. I hope none if you were insulted by my choice, every young lady who attended was beautiful and exceptional." Adrian said into the microphone. "I had a fantastic time, and I hope my guests did as well." |

OOC: If it is ok, I'm going to write the response as occurring before Adrian announces his choice. IC: Benckendorff answered for the pair, "We are fighting men, Klaus and I, and we both hold small manor houses in the Baltic country, inherited from our fathers. My uncle Gregor is part of the military command that meets in Riga Castle from time to time to discuss the fate of our people." He sighed, "But our country is small and insular. We keep to ourselves and mind the old ways. I wonder how many of my kinsmen or my peers have ever even taken a trip like this, to see a beautiful palace and speak with interesting people and gaze upon lovely women? Ours is a grim outpost at the far end of the world." It was about that time that Adrian took control of the room, ready to announce his choice of bride. |

OOC: I'm going to continue where CMESS left off previous to RD's post. Sorry if this causes any confusion. IC: Eleonore smiled widely at Adrian's comment. "I'd say were even now" she giggled as she squeezed his hand. Indeed she was extremely overjoyed and grateful of his decision, even if her chance encounter with Atratinus had left quite the lasting impression. As the two approached her father and brother, matters pertaining to her wedding were all that occupied her thoughts. The Archduke embraced both Adrian and his daughter expressing his joy. When Adrian handed him the letter, he quickly stored it inside his suit jacket. "If this is what I think it is then we will be in touch extremely soon. As for my daughter remaining with you in Berlin, I trust that you both will behave in the proper manner of newlyweds?" he said sternly. Adrian nodded, but smiled when he looked at Eleonore and caught a quick wink. Securing his fiance's passage, Adrian left for the stage. Never too far away from the Archduke, Klaus Schlesinger caught a quick glimpse of the letter's transfer. He quickly moved to interrupt Adrian's path to the stage. "Margrave, Congratulations on this most joyous occasion." He stated halfheartedly, and Adrian noticed the Chancellor's demeanor was rather strange. Schlesinger continued, "It's always a blessing to marry a woman so beautiful and influential, isn't it? Especially, when her father is supported by the second largest party in Austria. One begets to wonder, what her husband would achieve should her father ever hold power again?" The Chancellor finished with a wry smile, and Adrian sensed the man knew something. "I would know nothing of such fantasies, Mr. Chancellor." Adrian replied, "I love Eleonore, and any supposed benefits of our union are purely superfluous. Now, if you'll excuse me, I must address the other guests. I thank you for coming, Sir." He replied, hoping to leave the encounter quickly. "Truly, Margrave" Schlesinger responded, playing the Margrave's game. "The Federation looks forward to formal contacts between our two countries within the near future. Give my regards to Eleonore" Adrian politely agreed, and continued his advance towards stage. "These bastards have no idea what they're messing with" The Chancellor thought, as he resumed his vigil on the Austrian royal family. |

OOC: Porcu, feel free to interact with Constantine from the point I left off previously, but I'm going to move on. IC: Constantine's dancing, as well as the rest of the dancers on the floor was interrupted when the Adrian took to the stage. Intently, they listened as Adrian thanked everyone for attending the ball and his wish that all were enjoying themselves so far. Then, it seemed with a deep breath, he announced what everyone was waiting to hear from, to whom he'd intended to extend a hand of marriage to. Constantine had little illusion that the Margrave had either of his sisters, after all one dance was hardly an introduction much less an experience to leave one desiring anything other than a next dance. When his announcement was made, Archduchess Eleonore of the Austrian Germans, Constantine added his own hands to the round of applause that followed her answer. He'd seen her before that night, though he'd not had a chance to meet her formally. That said. Constantine had noticed how Adrian had acted around her, it seemed a good fit that the two German houses should be united. After the announcement, Constantine graciously bowed to Princess Cornelia and thanked her for the lovely dance. He then looked over towards his sisters and with a simply look, they two gave thanks to their dance partners before leaving their company and rejoining their brother. Leaving the company of the Porcuian royalty the Romanovs moved across the room until they happened upon the Baltic Germans. Russia had Batlic Germans in their own court, their lands near and around Tallinn had been taken by the Russian many years ago. Those houses that fell under the Russian crown swore fealty to his majesty Tsar though easily enough, they understood that in some circles they were considered out of place. The Russians had heard whispers among those Baltic Germans in their court that a state of their kinsmen was forming but never themselves, investigated such things as they saw to reason to. That said, Constantine saw little reason why he should not speak with them as the opportunity had across. Approaching them, Constantine smiled "I could not help but notice you two gentlemen and realize we had yet been acquainted. I am Grand Duke Constantine Romanov and these are my sisters, the Grand Duchesses Sofia and Elizabeth. If I may be so bold, you two are of Germany ancestry yourselves are you not. To whom do I speak to and from where do you hail?" |

Once again, Benckendorff took the opportunity to speak for both men, "We are junkers from Livonia. I am Wilhelm von Benckendorff, and my quieter friend is Klaus von Uexküll. Both of us hold manners in the Baltic country, held from our fathers, who both died in the Dominion prisons. My grandfather fought for Russia in the Georgian war and died for the Tsar. Klaus' grandfather -" Klaus interrupted, to speak for himself, "My grandfather resigned his commission in the Russian army in protest. He would not live under the Treaty of Guranburg." What he left unspoken was that his grandfather had continued to serve Russia during the regency of Felix Yusupov, when Russia forswore the dishonorable Treaty of Guranburg. But like many of the Baltic Germans of Livonia, he had left Russian service when the Yusupov era came to an end. The Baltic Germans of Estonia had largely accommodated to Tsar Paul's restored regime, but the rest of their nation were less pliant. |

"Your grandfather was a man of principle, something I cannot protest" said Constantine with a smile. "The Guranburg treaty was a travesty to the Empire and everyone who served for it during that war and to accept it was equally as tragic. However, I know that my grandfather sought to right that wrong every day that passed since he put his name to that paper. I can only hope that his actions helped to restore the honor those felt they lost for our capitulation." A small silence fell between the two parties before Constantine continued. "I have taken several holidays to the Estonian coast, the Baltic coastline is a beautiful place. I can only imagine your own manners are just as lovely. Tell me gentlemen, do you hunt much on your estates? I have always been curious over what game can be found south of our Estonian border." |

"I was fortunate enough to go onto University," Cornelia began, a smile growing across her face, "where I studied biochemistry. Rather than sitting in a lab, I'd like to provide the public face and support for organizations that provide help to struggling populations in the Americas, Africa, and Asia. There isn't much expected of us Porcuian royals, you know?" The Porcuian princes had a delightful time with their Russian dance partners. Crown Prince Marcus Decimus was already a well known and established engineer in the Republic, but the young Oppius Decimus was another case entirely. It was somewhat awkward for him to explain to the intelligent Elizabeth that he enjoyed the playboy-like lifestyle compared to the rigorous academic one. Compared to his siblings, Oppius Decimus was much more widely traveled and had friends and connects the world over. The dancing and conversations came to a halt when their German host climbed the stage and made his announcement. None of the Maxentii were surprised, yet there was a flash of disappointment that infected their eyes. Atratinus was smiling on the inside, his stoic face hiding everything. He had floated back over to the Porcuian Queen after speaking with the charming Eleonore and was soon joined by Marcus Decimus. "I say, you've managed to frighten everyone you've met tonight, Vopiscus Tarquinius." Atratinus gazed at the Queen in silence before the Crown Prince spoke and garnered his attention. "It has been a wonderful evening though, hasn't it?" "I'll say..." Atratinus responded in a tone more chilling than normal. "Just look at Cornelia Decima." Queen Aglaea Helvia said with a smile. "I haven't seen her this bright in awhile." Marcus Decimus frowned. "You really were out of line with His Majesty Constantine, Vopiscus Tarquinius. We need the Russians." Atratinus turned to Marcus Decimus with a perplexing look: one of surprise, disbelief, and anger. "We tolerate the Russians, Marcus Decimus." The Queen winced and the Crown Prince flushed. It was demeaning for individuals to refer to each other in such a causal way unless they were already acquainted, but especially so for the Porcuian royals. Despite not holding any real power, the Maxentii were nonetheless treated with great respect by their countrymen and women. Atratinus had always seemed to enjoy reminding the royals that they were little more than glorified regular citizens. Atratinus continued. "Just like the Russians tolerate us. Canae Ardea tried to play nice with them but made horrendously little headway in her time as President. Do you know what the Russians respond to, Marcus Decimus?" An uncomfortable silence. "Power. Strength and power. They are a dull people with an extreme sensitivity to perceived disrespect and injustice. They are the type of people to openly and brutally murder a cheating lover, whereas we Porcuians are much more discreet..." Atratinus said. "That's enough!" Queen Aglaea Helvia interrupted. "On that note of murdered lovers..." "I said that's enough!" the Queen shouted, drawing the attention of those immediately around her. Her face turned a deep red and her eyes dropped to the floor. She let out a quick sigh and left the company of her son and Atratinus for the restroom. Marcus Decimus was horrified when he spotted the beginning of a smile on Atratinus' face. Suddenly, the smile disappeared and his eyes focused elsewhere. Those cold grey spots shifted and fixed on two gentlemen across the Hall. Marcus Decimus sprung into action and cut off the Porcuian President, following his original gaze until he came upon the two nobles. He was pleased to see Constantine again and smiled broadly as he approached. Eager to introduce himself but not wishing to interrupt, Marcus Decimus waited until Constantine acknowledged him. The Porcuians introduced himself with a firm handshake and a bow to each of the Baltic junkers. Seamlessly, the conversation continued from where they had left off. Back across the Hall Atratinus was still making up his mind as to who to talk to next. Then, suddenly, he sensed it. Moving swiftly, Atratinus appeared beside the Chancellor of the East Germans and directly in front of the Margrave and his newly anointed wife. Schlesinger had watched the Porcuian throughout the evening from afar, but having him near was quite another matter. Atratinus' sudden appearance shocked the Margrave as well, but especially Eleonore. "Profound congratulations, Margrave, on your decision." Atratinus said while bowing slightly, his soft voice tickling the ears of those around him. "Eleonore, you must be ecstatic." Atratinus purposefully did not acknowledge the Chancellor because he knew he had read the man well enough to know that the Chancellor wouldn't stand to have all the attention thrown at the feet of these two royals. "We never were able to speak at length before." Atratinus added, his eyes piercing the Margrave. |

Responding to Constantine, Klaus von Uexhull said with a shrug, "Your grandfather did what he thought right, as mine did. It is for each of us to tend to the honor of our own family." Eager to avoid any tension, Wilhelm quickly took up Constantine's question about hunting, "The hunting in our country is excellent, I assure you, Prince. Elk and boar are my favorite sport." It was about that time that Marcus Decimus joined the group. After all the introductions had been made, Wilhelm von Benckendorff continued to describe the hunting and the other delights of his own lands. |

OOC: Porcu, I'm going to assume you were directing your question to Schlesinger so I'll jump in. If you were actually referring to Adrian, ill edit this accordingly. IC: Already in a euphoric state after her approval to marry the Margrave, Eleonore paid little attention as Atratinus descended upon the conversation. When the Porcuian addressed her directly, she almost missed his statement and was visibly embarrassed to realize who she was now facing yet again. All she could manage was a head nod and quick awkward smile to which Adrian took close notice. Standing to Atratinus' right, Chancellor Schlesinger watched the growing situation with absolute delight. The East German politician was always too eager to see his country's seemingly forgotten royal family in a state of discomfort, and if he had read this man beside him correctly, so did Atratinus. He casually motioned to introduce himself. "Vopiscus Tarquinius Atratinus, President of the Republic of Porcu, I do not believe I've had the pleasure of making your acquaintance." He stated with an extended hand. "Klaus Schlesinger, Chancellor of the United East German States. It is truly an honor." Edited by Whal, Mar 30 2013, 03:29 PM.

Constantine smiled as Wilhelm von Benckendorff talked about his country, the hunting and other delights. "Boar hunting is among my favorite past times" Constantine said finally. "Not long I was able to buy a young Mongolian horse, I was told they are quite the noble breed. I have yet to take it on a hunt yet though." He then turned to Marcus, "tell me, do you partake in hunting?" |

OOC: Al Whaladya, Atratinus was in fact speaking to Adrian, but was trying to elicit a response from Schlesinger, so everything's good. IC: Atratinus shifted to face the Chancellor in a deliberately slow manner, grabbing the gentleman's hand and smiling broadly. Not once had the Porcuian President exposed his teeth in a wide grin and this itself acted as a dagger to those already acquainted (some more than others) with the man. Oh, what did Schlesinger see in that brief moment? A chill and fear overtook him. It wasn't the result of something physically grotesque, for Atratinus was not in the least unattractive, but something that the East German Chancellor saw in those eyes or felt in that chilled, outstretched hand. Naturally, the Chancellor was able to reset himself, but that moment would haunt him. "Herr Kanzler Schlesinger..." Atratinus responded, the words softly and unassumingly rolling off the tongue. "The pleasure is all mine. I am happy to see that the peoples of Austria have managed to pick themselves up..." "What's this? An insult?" the thought raced through the Chancellor's mind. "...and that they are fully represented by such, well, immaculate individuals." Eleonore blushed, though the fact of doing so was thought normal since it was in response to a compliment, and Schlesinger froze uncomfortably - Atratinus was clearly looking back at Eleonore, but the Porcuian's response clearly included the Chancellor himself. "If I may be so bold, Chancellor, I would like to invite you to my fair Republic, for I would very much like to discuss the potential for cooperation and friendship between our nations. Naturally," Atratinus continued in his calm, calculating voice while turning fully back towards the Margrave and his new wife, "I would like to extend the same courtesy to you, Margrave, and Eleonore. I would very much desire the establishment of...formal relations...between our two states." The formality with which the Porcuian address him and the familiarity with which the Porcuian addressed his wife stung Adrian as sinister and unsettling. Beautifully reserved, only a few ever subtle signs were picked up by Atratinus, Adrian smiled back. Across the Hall, Crown Prince Marcus Decimus was slightly caught off-guard by the question posed to him by the sharply dressed and masculine Russian Prince. The Porcuian royal was happy to have continued in his position as a passive observer of the conversation, but was excited at further introducing himself to both Constantine and the Baltic delegates. "Well, I'm afraid I don't partake in the activity often, but I have been on several trips throughout Scandinavia - excellent choice of elk. My favorite time is in the heart of winter, when the snow is thick and the silence deafening! Having to ski and hunt simultaneously is a major test of endurance and strength. I've also been buffalo hunting in the Americas, such a landscape! Oh...I've also been fortunate enough to travel and hunt through Siberia." |

Schlesinger's first encounter with the Porcuian President would be an experience he would not soon forget. The calm, calculated, and friendly exterior of the man seemed, to the Chancellor, to hide a truly determined and manipulative state of being. He took quick note of this fact and adjusted his tone accordingly. Atratinus was a force to be reckoned with; a man much unlike the Royal imbeciles that so greatly outnumbered them. "Well, I would be honored, Mr. President." Schlesinger stated, in a more formal tone. "I do believe two great democracies such as ours, can accomplish almost anything, especially once properly united. Moreover, Europe has need of such governments in the wake of war-hungry Popes, and overzealous Kings." This last statement, Schlesinger drove home and he directed it mainly at the Margrave and Eleonore. Although the response was less than he hoped for, as Adrian simply shrugged it off and simply looked the other way. Atratinus, however, responded with a smile that slowly went from the Chancellor to Eleonore. Schlesinger noticed that she casually looked away and indiscreetly bit her lips in response. "What have these two between them?" Schlesinger thought. He let the question fester in his brain as he waited the Margrave's response to the Presidents offer. Someway across the floor, Archduke Karl II of Austria had been gradually eavesdropping on the Porcuian and Russian conversation. Wishing to know more about the individuals who presided over the other Royal families of Europe, he politely interjected into their conversation. "Sorry to interrupt, Gentlemen, but do i hear a conversation regarding hunting?" Edited by Whal, Apr 5 2013, 09:36 PM.

"I have hunted in Siberia a few times myself" said Constantine, "but the wilds are not as safe as they once were when in Imperial hands as you certainly must know. "I've not done much in the Americas sadly though I am told there is quite the exotic catch of sea life in the Hawaiian isles. Though I have yet to go, I am planning to travel there soon and try my hand at fishing." At that point Constantine turned and allowed Archduke Karl to join the small group that had now formed on this side of the hall. "Why yes" said Constantine, "We were discussing our various experiences at hunting. It seems between the Baltic German State and the great expanses of the Russian Empire and Republic of Porcu, there is much game to be had indeed. If I am not mistaken, you are Austrian are you not? I have only had the chance of passing through such a land briefly but I can hardly mistake an Austrian accent for much else. I do not believe we've been properly introduce, I am Grand Duke Constantine Alexeovich Romanov II." |

"Your keen ears do not betray you, sir, I'am an Austrian, and if it is game you desire I highly recommend you visit our glorious Alpine Mountain Range" Karl stated enthusiastically. "Our pristine landscape is home to many majestic creatures: artic wolf, polecat, lynx, and bear are all satisfying hunts." "But enough of that, its a pleasure to make your acquaintance, young tsarevich. I'am Archduke Karl Hapsburg-Lothringen II" he introduced himself while shaking Constantine's hand. "I've always viewed the Russian people very highly, and although I've never traveled through your land at length, I hope too very soon." "Forgive me, Gentlemen, I'am being rude." Karl stated embarrassed at not acknowledging the Porcuian and Baltic Germans beside him. He exchanged formal introductions with the others, before turning to Constantine once again. Suddenly the Archduke was flustered. How could he talk to the Russian prince without asking the news about his noble father. "My apologizes, Prince Constantine, in my prattling over hunting I've insulted your family." he stated apologetically. "Please tell me, how is your father's condition?" |

OOC: Al Whaladya, though he's dead technically, I'm going to RP as if he's still alive as his death in my timeframe happens slightly before Constantine and his sister's departure from the ball. IC: "Please Archduke, no apologies needed" said Constantine with a slight smile. "I have been made aware, since my arrival, that the news has already traveled throughout much of Europe. However, in case it hasn't reached Vienna, my father has awoken from his coma. He was very much in high spirits when I saw him before our leave here to the ball. Myself, and my sister's included, were a bit apprehensive to leave as you can imagine but our father insisted. He has always been one to seize opportunities when they arrive and he felt this ball would be good for Russia. Russia has always viewed the German people with great admiration and friendship. After all my grandfather was once good friends to the German Emperor." Constantine turned slight, "Ah my Archduke where are my manners" he said as he motioned for his sisters. "Please, allow me to introduce the Grand Duchess Sofia and the Grand Duchess Elizabeth" Both girls courtesy before the archduke as they were introduced. |

OOC: I was aware of his death, NRE :P, but because of the current nature of the ball, the Archduke does not. IC: "What true beauty." the Archduke said respectfully as he kissed the hands of the Russian princesses. "Indeed, the Romanov family is of immaculate stock." Quickly he brought the conversation back to Tsar Alexei. "I have always admired your father and the way in which he governs the Russian people. I'm glad to hear his health has recovered, and I hope to see him again very soon." After speaking almost exclusively with Constantine the Archduke once again felt he was ignoring his fellow nobles. He shifted his attention to the Baltic gentlemen. "Allow me again to congratulate you both on the formal establishment of your homeland. It's pleasant to see fellow Germans in a state of power once again." |

Constantine smiled as he listened on as the Germans spoke to one another. His sisters, not from from his line of sight, were conversing with other noblewomen at the ball when an aide came to the Grand Duke's side. "Excuse me your majesty" the young man said, "if I may have a moment of your attention." Constantine parted his company only briefly and his joyful demeanor changed rather quickly. Returning to the group long enough to announce his departure, he left the group again and gathered his sisters. Constantine was just told of his father's death and that he an his sisters were being recalled to Moscow at once. The Romanovs left as quietly as they could, a formal letter explaining their abrupt departure and expressing their sincerest apologies for such would soon find itself way to the desk of the foreign minister of Brandenburg. |

The sudden departure of the Romanovs came as a surprise to the young Oppius Decimus and the stunning Cornelia Decima. The eldest child, Marcus Decimus, however, had seen the glow leave Constantine's face upon speaking with his assistant and realized that the Russian's presence was needed elsewhere. Hopefully, there would be other opportunities for the two families to meet and converse. The Decimii Maxentii had thoroughly enjoyed themselves - despite having to attend to Atratinus occasionally. In fact, when Constantine had taken his leave, Marcus Decimus had swiveled on his heel and turned to retrieve his President. The beautiful Eleonore had once acted as savior and it was now the Crown Prince's duty to reciprocate. Clutching Atratinus' thin but solid frame, Marcus Decimus spoke in hurried Greek, not willing to take any chances that those around understood even a bit of Latin. He did his best to hold a smile. "It's time you stopped acting as a child, Vopiscus Tarquinius! So help me God, I'll drag you out of his Hall and..." "And?" Atratinus remarked, not turning at all to face the Porcuian royal just over his shoulder. An odd silence gripped the small group until the Margrave broke the spell by advancing on. With a wave and a smile the new royal couple moved past and settled onto another group, delighted at receiving even more compliments and well wishes. Meanwhile, a few short words were exchanged between Chancellor Schlesinger and President Atratinus, while Marcus Decimus stood idly by, before the Porcuians were alone. Returning to their exchange in ancient Greek, the two men spoke frankly. "Marcus Decimus, you seem to forget that it is I who is the Praesidis of our Republic. While you may insult me, you may not threaten me." "You terrorize these people, Atratinus! And for what? Does it thrill you? Does praying upon the Austrian Archduchess give you relief?" Atratinus' eyes widened, those eyes only becoming more mesmerizing. "Oh! Wonderful, Marcus Decimus! Your tutor would be proud of your way with words - truly a skill only a few have come close to mastering and only a handful have made their own. And what of your fancy for the Romanovs? Do you think the Russians, of proud stock, would degrade themselves in such a way? Like watering a fine wine." "You're a serpent." "No...even worse." Atratinus said, taking a step forward. Although only of moderate height, Atratinus seemed to tower in such encounters. "I'm just like you, Marcus Decimus." "Not quite." Marcus Decimus barked back. "My blood will carry on and last through the centuries. You are the last of your line. You will not last and with you the Tarquinii Atratinii are gone. Having finally seen you for what you are I suspect your former wife's absence should be celebrated with full State honors." Atratinus went weak at that final comment. His exterior changed not at all, but for that briefest of moments there flashed a face he would gladly die for if there was a guarantee. His breathing and heart rate jumped slightly, but he remained as cold and stoic as before. He almost had lost that only picture of her during the Teuton's chemical attack on Stockholm and, oh, how his armor had been viciously stripped from him! The Porcuian President turned and left the Porcuian royal without a word in response. Atratinus walked nowhere in particular and allowed himself to wander. Perhaps, some poor fool would strike up a conversation. Perhaps, he'd be afforded the time to bury the whirlwind of emotions that suffocated him. |

Adrian asked Eleanor to excuse him for a moment. Seeing Atratinus alone, Adrian took the opportunity to approach the interloper. Adrian had complete control of the room, some sort of primal alpha-male complex he assumed, but Atratinus was free of this control, and anyone he spoke to also fell from Adrian's influence and into his. This was unacceptable. This was Adrian's party, and Adrian's country. As he approached, he compared him to the Tolkien character... what was his name? Wormtongue? "Hallo, Herr Präsident." Adrian said with a smirk. He would not fall victim to his spells. "enjoying the party?" |

Atratinus shifted, his grey eyes locking onto the Margrave. There was something that was hinted at in those eyes. Something Adrian had not noticed before. "Very much so, Your Excellency." the Porcuian's soft voice clearly heard despite the goings on all about. "Strange though, don't you think, to have invited the cream of European nobility to experience a choice you could have easily made in private settings?" Adrian stirred, but Atratinus wasn't finished speaking. The Porcuian President slowly adjusted his glasses. "Oh, please don't take offense, for I meant none. Your taste in food and wine is excellent," Atratinus continued, smiling slightly and revealing his own set of white teeth - and a pair of sharp canines, "but I think your question requires an answer from its bearer. Are you enjoying your own party, Your Excellency?" |
