Margrave Adrian von Lebus sat up naked in his bed. He looked around his bedchamber. To his left, he saw his bookshelf, most of its content on the floor, and his reading chair and lamp, both on the floor. To his front his saw the doors to his room, closed tightly, and a mess of various articles of clothing and bottles of alcohol. To his right, he saw a beautiful young woman. He opened his mouth to say something, but stopped himself when he realized he could not remember her name. He left the bed, carefully, so as not to wake her, and stuck his head through the door to the hallway, motioning to an aide. "There is a young lady in my room, see to it that she makes it home." He threw on a robe and let the aide inside the room. Adrian walked to his dressing room, and put on a simple outfit, but not before getting a glass of his favorite Dornfelder wine. He put on a pair of black slacks and a white collared shirt. As he walked out, he glanced out the window to see his aide helping the girl he'd slept with into a taxi. He still could not remember her name. The chamberlain, Rudolf von Lebus, Adrian's uncle, approached Adrian from behind. "Another of your... conquests, Adrian?" He smiled as he said it, and they shook hands. "Guten morgen, Rudolf." Adrian said. "Your father and I had some times when we were" he paused akwardly. "in Porcu, let me tell me you!" Rudolf continued, laughing. "But, we do have a serious matter to attend, come along." Adrian followed Rudolf to the Library, where they sat in the center of the large room. Adrian loved to read, and indeed had read many of the books. Adrian had a favorite chair, where he was currently seated. It was a small but grand chair, with Velvet cushions and a gold leaf frame. "What was it you wanted to talk about, Rudolf?" Adrain asked before taking a sip of his wine. "Adrian, we need to continue the goals of the Margraviate-" Adrian scoffed before he could finish, and interrupted "You don't think I know that?" Rudolf cocked an eyebrow, but continued. "The von Lebus bloodline needs to continue, and you brother has already married a commoner, but you have yet to marry... This bachelor business needs to stop." Adrian gave Rudolf "the Look." He inherited that from his father, this look of arrogance and conceit. Rudolf scowled in comparison. "I have a suggestion. Marry someone of power. A daughter of a prince or king..." He kept babbling on, but Adrian rolled the idea around in his head. He liked the idea. He knew the kings of old married into other powerful royal families, and, what the hell, maybe a Moff had a cute daughter if he needed an alliance with a nearby power. "Put this on." Rudolf said, as Adrian snapped back to attention. "Hm? Oh, my uniform?" The medals jingled as he slipped the coat on. A camera crew set up, and Adrian sat cross-legged in his chair, his wine glass in his hand. How long had Rudolf been going on?

The ball began in the Amber Ballroom, a large empty space will beige walls and a dark wood floor. Long tables topped with various foods and hor dervours sat next to the wall. Dining tables and chairs sat closer to the stage, where a band was playing "Midnight Serenade," a slow, lazy song that matched the setting sun over Berlin. Adrian and Rudolf sat at the door, greeting the various guests, who included: A Porcuan Delegation, who, while rather gregarious, Adrian had little interest in. The Russian Royals, which included the archduchesses Sophia and Elizibeth. Marrying into the Romanov family would be a good move, but the Russians were busy elsewhere, and the alliance might drag them into the Crusade, something Adrain didn't want. The Austrian Ferdinand and Eleanor von Hapsburg-Lothringen, who could be the most advantageous to marry. Eleanor was beautiful, the marriage would be a popular move in German diplomacy, and the Marslavans had already privately contacted Adrian about cooperation with the Austrians. They were accompanied by Klaus Schlesinger, Chancellor of the Federation of East German States. And finally, the Royal family of Sinan. Emperor Maro, his wife, and his daughter. While they, like the Porcuans, were friendly, Adrian had little interest in a power so far away. |

Adrian first approached the Russians. He greeted the Princes warmly, shaking hands and making small talk. "How are the three of you enjoying Germany?" Adrian asked pleasantly, holding a glass of wine. There was more small talk and pleasantries, and Adrian asked to dance with Sophia. |

The Flight from Saint Petersburg to Brandenburg-Pomeranian was a relatively short affair, though security precautions were made to ensure the young royals safety given the war not far. Some back in the Russian court had urged them not to go but European politics being what they were, Russia was interested in knowing more of this new emerging European monarchy. Though the drive from the airport to the location of the ball was short drive, Constantine took the time to take it all end. He could remember, from his youth, stories from his grandfather Tsar Paul, of the German people. Russia had been a precarious ally to the old German Empire and Paul had even considered an alliance through marriage between the two states. Sadly, the Dominion Wars crushed any such plans as the German Empire collapsed an faded into history. The arrival, like to most parties of this type, was well announced once the three young royals entered the room. Sophia and Elizabeth stayed close to their brother and Constantine played the role of chaperone well, ordering drinks and looking over his sisters like a hawk. At 25, Constantine and his twin brother Ivan, were the eldest of the Tsar's children. Though Ivan had and was continuing to fill the role of the heir to the throne, Constantine was instead something else. As a twin, he was just as entitled some would say to the throne as was his brother. However, their father Alexei thought instead that Constantine could be was Ivan could not. Free from the full duties of state, Constantine could be where Ivan could not. In essence, when Ivan become Tsar, Constantine could help the Tsar could be everywhere. "We are enjoying Germany quite well, Margrave von Lebus" Constantine said with a smile. "Your country is very beautiful and your people are quite welcoming, me and my sisters have enjoyed ourselves very well so far" Sophia, the eldest daughter of the Tsar at the ripe age of 24, was a striking young woman who most said looked exactly like her mother, Atia of Draxis. Fair of face and gentle of spirit, she had attended medical school and was quite well-read. She smiled at the Margrave as he spoke with Constantine. Being the eldest, Sophia was naturally the first of the Tsar's daughters that was expected to be married. Surely winning her hand, either from Sophia herself or from her father, would gain any man a great deal of favor in the Russian court. This was not lost of the younger Elizabeth who, at just the age of 21, was the middle daughter. Perhaps not as lovely as Sophia, she was still a beautiful young woman who looked more like her grandmother, Aaline Ribbenzoph of Kasnyia. Like her sister, she too was a bright and was well read for a woman of her status. Though many expect Sophia to be the one to win the Margrave, were it to be a Russian at all, Elizabeth did not allow this to damper her spirits. At the very least it got her outside of Russia, something she was not allowed to enjoy often. "Oh Margrave von Lebus" said Sophia with a curtsy, "I would love to dance." Sophia glided across the floor as the two enjoyed themselves, Constantine not far and his eyes hardly looking away. This, most naturally, was not lost on either the Margrave nor Sophia, but for Sophia she intended to enjoy herself never the less. "This is a most magnificent ball Margrave, the music and refreshments are very nice" Sophia said, smiling and batting her beautifully sparkling eyes. |

"You flatter me, Archduchess Romanov." Adrian replied. "But please, enjoy yourself." He thought Sophia a masterful dancer, and after they danced for a few song he returned Sophia to her siblings. He glanced and smiled at Elizabeth, but made no offer to dance with her. He next approached the Austrian Hapsburg-Lothringan family. Adrian thought well of the family, his father and uncle always spoke very highly of them, and indeed, Adrian had spent some Summers in Austria or Bavaria and had some recollection of a much younger Eleanor and Ferdinand. "Hallo, freunden." Adrian said, smiling and shaking there hands. He made pleasantries with them in the same fashion as the Romanovs before asking Eleanor to dance. The Hapsburg-Lothringan family is synonymous with humility and a naturalistic "down-to-earth" mentality in contemporary Austria. After the last Austrian Hapsburg Archduke, Otto II, was forced to abdicate his throne in recent times, the family was pressed to adapt a more "civilian" approach to life. This was not to say, however, that the current house of Hapsburg-Lorraine was anything but royal and elegant. The family, which currently presides over a multi-billion dollar private investment corporation, is still one of the most influential and privileged houses in all of Europe. It was this single notion that explained the confident composure of Archduke Karl II of Austria and his two children as they attended the event. Additional to their monetary achievements, the Hapsburg-Lothringians were also confident that their past cordial relations and close relationship with the von Lebus family would also tip the scales in their favor. The young Archduchess, Eleonore, in particular had been a relatively close childhood friend of the Margrave, and the two were sometimes seen playing together in the villa gardens. Ferdinand, the Crown Prince of Austria, was also a childhood friend of Adrian's and the pair enjoyed a healthy respect for each other. The Archduke's children were eager to see their friend again. The family entered after the Romanov's had been introduced, and were then joined by the current Chancellor of the FUEGS, Klaus Schlesinger, who followed at a distance. Schlesinger hoped to stress the distance between the new state's government and the old royal family, but additionally the middle aged Chancellor was lost in this "Royal Jungle", and was unsure how to compose himself. The group approached the Margrave and exchanged pleasantries, while congratulating him both on the establishment of the Magravate and the elegance of the Ball. "Well-done, Adrian, I'm extremely proud of the man you've become." Karl II stated as he patted the Margrave on the back. "We all are". He said, prompting a response from his children, notably Eleonore. Eleonore, was a striking blonde of 22 who was much beloved in Austria for her beautiful singing voice that had won her numerous national awards. She radiated an aura of culture and knowledge that was unheard of in many of the girls of her age. Consequentially, Eleonore was currently attending the most prestigious university in Austria. She batted her beautiful blue eyes at Adrian and smiled. "Good Evening, Margrave" she said as their hands touched. She almost laughed at the formal tone, she felt like she was meeting him for the first time. When she was offered a dance, she eagerly jumped at it as the two made their way to the dance floor. The pair gently glided across the floor as the band began their next song, a fitting Viennese Walts. Eleonore and Adrian were both adept dancers, and the pair completed the song without a single mishap; ideally they moved well together. As the song faded Eleonore spoke, "Oh Adrian, that was wonderful" she stated as she looked directly into his eyes. "It has been far too long since those days in Bavaria". |

Such genuine excitement in the Royal palace just outside Stockholm was rare. A grizzly morning suddenly seemed less threatening and the previous period of inactivity on the part of the (relatively) young royals was instantly forgotten. It may seem strange, unbelievable perhaps, but the small Scandinavian nationstate of Porcu had once been ruled, like every other state on the Continent, by a King and his progeny. Granted, it was not for very long, but it was long enough to leave a number of impressions upon the country's history and traditions. Having officially been stripped of any semblance of power over 1.200 years ago, the Porcuian monarchy had habituated to its status as glorified celebrities within the Republic, and as lowly nobles just a level above those who had enough power and influence to buy their way into the enchanted circles of the European monarchs. The Porcuian monarchy, the House of Maxentius, was not terribly rich and obviously they carried little weight internationally. The only thing that was theirs that one might say truly mattered among the noble and the ennobled was their dignitas. The Maxentii could trace their ancestry clear back to the ancient Roman Empire, to a close cousin and blood relative of an Emperor who, in his immense wisdom and fortitude, saw fit to send a Roman expedition to the North. It was this original expedition that eventually gave rise to Porcu. The Porcuians were ancient and their blood undoubtedly royal. Yet, they had been among the most foolish (according to their counterparts in the royal courts of Paris, Berlin, Moscow, Madrid, London, and elsewhere), for they had allowed themselves to be stripped of their power and were content with the lowly stamps of their titles. Little had changed of late, but the wind had stirred and shifted its course. Unthinkable almost ten or twenty years ago, the King had become a parliamentarian. Yes, this "progress" was obtained through indirect means, but the opportunities that were now available were enticing. Additionally, the King now found himself the Governor of Carolina-Georgia SAR, with relative freedom of action that no Porcuian royal had managed to obtain for centuries. There was even talk in private circles of a royal running for the presidency - imagine it! One became almost paralyzed with orgasmic excitement. The Porcuians, being who they were, were not the most welcomed of guests. Pleasantries and the polite courtesies expected of such an event were extended, but with just enough respect and no enthusiasm. Unfortunate, really, since the Porcuians were immensely charming and not at all unappealing. Due to his duties in the Americas, King Julius Decimus Maxentius IV was unable to attend, his wife the Queen taking charge of leading her children. Crown Prince Marcus Decimus and his younger brother Oppius Decimus had little difficulty in moving about the Ball, language being of no barrier to them, and Princess Cornelia Decima easily wooed those who were not arrogant enough to immediately dismiss her. It was fantastically curious. Despite their "lowly" standing, the Porcuian royals were excellent specimens of what gave Porcuians their global appeal and, simultaneously, their detractors. Could jealousy and envy, a factor in so many previous encounters and exchanges, again cloud the judgement of the evening's hosts? A late addition to the Porcuian delegation had not been one easily accepted by the Queen. However, once word of the presence of the Russian Prince reached his ears there was nothing to stop him from attending. If ever there was a black and white divide it was present now in Berlin. Officially, President and Prime Minister Atratinus had stated that a complete image of Porcu was necessary - that the Republic should convey both its royal and republican history. Undoubtedly, their hosts and guests would feel the bright warmth of one part of the delegation, while also feeling the cold chill of the other part. Finally able to speak with her gracious host, Queen Aglaea Helvia Maxentius gave a short bow of the head and warmly thanked the Margrave for his kindness and hospitality. Her children were introduced one by one and though she noticed subtle changes in his eyes she was unable to decipher what they said. "I am told your esteemed President is also present." the Margrave added after having thanked the Queen, and the Princess, for their attendance. "I should hope to meet him as well." Queen Aglaea Helvia frowned slightly. "I only hope His Majesty does not take the wrong impressions away from such an encounter. The Honorable Vopiscus Tarquinius can be imposing at times." At another part of the hall a wolf-like Atratinus watched the Tsarevich and, sensing a ripe opportunity, descended silently. It was Constantine's sister Elizabeth who took note of the Porcuian first, though for how long he had stayed close listening to their conversation was only a guess. Feinting a smile in order to hide her surprise, she greeted Atratinus and recruited her brother so as not to be alone in conversation. President Atratinus did not know exactly what the Russians thought of him, but through various intelligence networks had come to understand that many distrusted him and disliked him. In the case of Ivan, it was likely that he was despised. Stories from Russian diplomats highlighted his frigidity and his piercing grey eyes. The more religiously inclined were convinced he was Lucifer incarnate, if not a vampiric demon. Still, there was that minority which did not consider him a threat and perhaps there were even those who were enchanted by the graceful, soft-spoken Porcuian. Atratinus bowed and reached for Elizabeth's hand and gently brought it to his mouth, holding it for a moment after he kissed it. He gazed at Elizabeth in a way which unsettled Constantine, though the Russian Prince couldn't tell if the flush in his sister's face was from embarrassment, an attractive impulse, or fear. Atratinus greeted both Constantine and Elizabeth and continued with light banter for another minute. Constantine was stunned. Atratinus' voice, soft almost effeminate, was slow - calculated rather - and gave the impression of one who was entirely in charge of events. His eyes, when he made contact with Constantine, were a pale grey - it was true! - and locked him in. His hair was well groomed and his skin flawless; perhaps those diplomats weren't so crazy after all. "Your Majesty," Atratinus said in beautifully accented Russian, "I hear that the Tsar has awoken from his slumber." Constantine froze. "How could he know?" "Please forward my best whenever possible. Russia is still in need of her strong and noble leader." "I will." Constantine replied slowly. "And the Tsesarevich? I do hope he has grown accustomed to the pressures of your father's position." Adrian, still talking with Eleanor and the Porcuans, noticed the episode happening between the Russians and Atratinus. He could tell from the Romanovs' reaction something was wrong, and Adrian would not have his guests feeling uncomfortable at his party. "Ah, there he is!" Adrian proclaimed loudly, surprising the small social group and some of the people dancing on the floor."Mr. Atratinus, President of the Republic of Porcu!" Adrain gave a conceited smile, shaking hands with Atratinus. "How are you enjoying the ball, sir?" An awkward silence settled over the room, with only the band still making noise. Adrian glanced at Eleanore and discreetly mouthed the words "Do something." before looking back to the Porcuan President. Edited by Margrave, Mar 24 2013, 11:42 AM.

Eleonore stared back at Adrian and widened her eyes, presumably saying "Like what, stupid?!". However, she quickly composed herself and thought of a way to end this terribly awkward situation and resume the party. She quickly moved over to to the Porcuan President. "President Atratinus, It is truly an honor to make your acquaintance... I'm Archduchess Eleonore Hapsburg-Lothringan, daughter of Archduke Karl II of Austria." She said quickly, shaking the Porcuan's hand. "I've always wanted to travel to Stockholm. Would you accompany a young lady to the refreshments and regal her with stories of your beautiful capital and homeland?" She concluded as she more-or less pulled the Porcuan President with her. As they were walking away, Eleonore turned back to Adrian and mouthed "You owe me", before resuming her stroll with Atratinus. Edited by Whal, Mar 24 2013, 12:18 PM.

OOC: Thanks! I just didn't want to introduce them without your permission. IC: Arriving late and little known to the other guests, the two young Baltic German noblemen drew little notice. They were not prominent and the Baltic country itself had long stood on the fringes of European affairs. Klaus von Uexküll and Wilhelm von Benckendorff were friends, but rather different in temperament. They were both military men, educated in the vocation of their class, but Benckendorff was a passionate man, full of zest for the world, while Uexkull was sober and laconic, living a rigorous, almost monastic lifestyle. Nevertheless, the two men got along easily, and when Benckendorff had suggested they see the wider world of German culture, Uexkull went along without too much convincing. They had used connections with the more powerful nobles of the Baltic country to get invitations to the Ball, and attended in their dress uniforms. Edited by Rhadamanthus, Mar 24 2013, 01:47 PM.

OOC: Apologies if I interrupted your timing, CMESS. I wanted to get in a post before the ball got away from me. :P IC: Atratinus stood there in silence and gazed at Adrian von Lebus. Not out of surprise or because he could think of nothing to say. Rather, he was curious to see how the social dynamic would change now that His Most Gracious Host had seen fit to interrupt a pleasant conversation. And another savior! Bless her soul, that sweet and graceful daughter of the Archduke! The Porcuian's hand felt cold to the touch and Archduchess Eleonore was glad to quickly bring that phase of her introduction to a close. Yet, before she could drag him away from the Romanovs and von Lebus President Atratinus reached out to Constantine and lightly touched his upper arm. Constantine felt a distinct chill sweep through his body. "I hope we can finish our conversation, Your Majesty. Enjoy your evening." "Again, with that look!" Constantine thought when Atratinus shifted his gazed momentarily to Elizabeth. Leaving their company, the Porcuian had said not a word to Adrian. "I've always wanted to travel to Stockholm." Eleonore said again, as if Atratinus had not heard her the first time. Upon arrival at the refreshment table a servant quickly handed over two glasses of premium champagne. She was kind, Atratinus thought, but just like every other royal present. In a Europe still partly defined by class, privilege, and nobility, how would she tolerate him, as a mere commoner, and his position and the power it held? Despite her brilliance, her tone betrayed her when she had acted honored to have met him...the President of the Republic of Porcu. "And what has kept you, Your Highness?" Atratinus asked. "Please, call me Eleonore. I'm not terribly fond of the antiquated titles, plus my father isn't around to hear us and chastise me for letting you do so." She said as she smiled with her stunning blue eyes. Eleonore's gaze was met briefly by the cold, yet strangely mesmerizing, manner displayed by the Porcuan's eyes. Were they made of silver? After spending only a short time together, she had noticed a slight aloofness in Atratinus' temperament. She recognized a similar disposition among many of the "commoners" with whom she had interactions with, whether in daily life, or at university. Although a member of one of Europe's most elegant royal families, Eleonore often sought out the presence of non-royals for company for she loved that they lacked the self-entitled, self gratifying tendencies of many members of the aristocracy. Besides, what had her family, notably her father, had to brag about? Every East German knows that the chancellor held all the power in the Federation; that her family was nothing more but a formality of a bygone era. Still, she was often a victim of the same prejudices that distanced members of both classes from existing together perfectly, and she presently feared this in Atratinus. She almost forgot the President's question. "Well, to be honest, Mr. President, I've never been given a reason to travel to Porcu." She stated in a semi-somber tone. With her comment, Atratinus merely raised an eyebrow and she quickly noticed her comment bore disrespect which was not her intention in the slightest. "I apologize if that sounded disrespectful. Its just that my father is very protective and there are only so many places I can travel and actually appreciate their beauty." She said, expressing a manner of disgust at the notion of being forced to the whims of others. "Tell me, are there any great opera halls in your country?" Edited by Whal, Mar 24 2013, 07:48 PM.

OOC: This is shaping up to be a classic gathering in Europe, I can't tell you how long its been since we've had a party like this  IC: The entire encounter with President Atratinus had, to an extent, disheveled the Russian royals. Though this was not entirely apparent outwardly, it was none the less true. Remaining composed the Russians simply continued to smile and simply acted as natural as they could when at last the President was lost within the small gathered crowd and they were, for the most part, left to themselves. Sophia and Elizabeth were quick the scoff the President between them, making small talk through whispers between them. Constantine on the other hand could not help but smile. It was a game after all, public appearances and gatherings such as this, and Atratinus was the type of man who'd made his career on playing the game and playing it well. The Grand Duke should have expected no less from the Porcuian President but admittedly did not know how bold and brash the man really was. Noticing the Margrave, Constantine simply smiled and raised his glass to the man who'd defused the situation before it had become deadly. To this he owed Adrian and Constantine was not a man who forgot such kindness afford to him lightly. Taking a sip of his drink, Constantine scanned the room, looking from face to face without really looking at anyone at all. The young Russian noble, though a near match in appearance to his brother Ivan was, like many twins, the night of Ivan's day. Ivan was a more spontaneous, emotional son whose actions always came with the grandeur of his status. Constantine, on the other hand, was more soft-spoken and did more through action that through talk alone. Motioning to his sisters, who were still consumed with one another, with a mere "follow" motion from his finger, the Romanov nobles went on the move. Moving well between small groupings of people and making small, polite greetings to a few as they moved, Constantine led his sister's across the room until at last even they realized where he was heading. "Queen Aglaea Helvia Maxentius I presume" said Constantine as he took the woman's hand and kissed his softly while bowing. "Your majesty, I am Grand Duke Constantine Alexeovich Romanov II and these are my sisters, Grand Duchess Sophia and Grand Duchess Elizabeth." The two girls curtsy as Constantine introduced them. "I find that we have never been properly introduced and seeing you and your lovely family here I felt it only prudent to capitalize on the situation. Certainly her majesty could only agree?" Constantine nodded to the two princes while making a point to smile at the lovely Princess Cornelia. |

"Yes..." Queen Aglaea Helvia said, her voice carrying a slight burden. Her voice lowered, she leaned in towards Constantine, "I do hope you forgive the conduct of Vopiscus Tarquinius." Constantine smiled. "Your Majesty, I won't have you apologizing for something that..." "Then let me, please." What a voice! A wonderful ring and a lovely pitch. Princess Cornelia Decima had overheard her mother, not entirely surprising since the Queen spoke at a normal tone when she instead thought she was being terribly discreet, and had wanted to jump in. One tired quickly of movie stars and athletes - who wouldn't jump at the opportunity to converse with real (and handsome) royalty? Constantine nodded and turned his attention to the two Porcuian princes as the elder, Marcus Decimus, began to speak. "It is an honor and a pleasure, Grand Duke. There is a fascination we Porcuians have of you Russians and I can clearly see that the centuries have not dulled the stunning beauty that distinctly marks a Romanov." Marcus Decimus was, like the others of his family, modestly dressed. A sharp tuxedo, accented with a colorful sash and three shining medals, suited him well. But that was not what the female Romanovs first took note of. Whereas Atratinus' eyes were a cold, pale grey, the Crown Prince's were a lovely green. Whereas Atratinus chilled the air around him, Marcus Decimus radiated warmth and affection. He was older, having just turned 33, but his smile and his laugh aged him at no more than 26. "The Empire is fortunate..." he said, trailing off. A moment later, he extended his hand and asked the Grand Duchess Sophia for a dance. And strangely Constantine then found himself standing beside Cornelia Decima. Upon seeing the courage of his older brother, Oppius Decimus asked Elizabeth for a dance - a bit forceful, perhaps, since the Russian royal barely had time to hand off her glass of champagne to Cornelia Decima. Queen Aglaea Helvia quietly backed away and found another suitable conversation partner. She had more to say, but knew there would be additional opportunities to converse. Oh, if only Julius Decimus was here! Of course, he got along rather well with that vampire Atratinus. "I'm learning Russian, you know?" Cornelia Decima said suddenly, catching Constantine slightly off guard. Instantly feeling herself stupid, she readied the glass of champagne to take a long sip when needed in order to think through her next comment. Across the way it was a wonder how Eleonore of the Habsburg-Lothringan clan had managed as long and as well as she had. She was brave, Atratinus noticed, and...something else. Unfortunately, her question demanded a response - how he would much rather have gazed at her in silence. "Yes, we have a few." Atratinus said. An understatement, for any civilized person knew of the Halls that dotted the Republic, from Stockholm, to Taurinorum, to Patavium, to... "Perhaps you've heard of the Theatrum mediolanum?" Eleonore was swept with the sudden realization of the silliness of her question. Despite her efforts she had again appeared patronizing, for it would be quite impressive for a commoner to know of and appreciate the opera and theater, wouldn't it? In fact, she knew very well of the Grand Opera House in Mediolanum, as her father had visited once before and found it superb and because it regularly won accolades and international praise. Eleonore smiled and responded in the affirmative, somewhat afraid to speak. Finally! Atratinus had figured it out! "We are not so different, you and I." he said. "How did his voice never rise or fall?" Eleonore thought to herself. Not a monotonous tone, for there was feeling behind his words. "How do you mean?" she asked. "Only birth and upbringing separate us. Our wants...and desires are the same." he replied, stepping close. Atratinus was not much taller than Eleonore but now he seemed to tower over her. "Desires?" Eleonore said, her eyes tracking upwards to his. Atratinus leaned in closer still. "It is quite unsettling looking into someone's eyes, isn't it? Especially when you aren't used to it." Eleonore's heart skipped a beat. She couldn't recall how many times she had conversed with someone who thought of themselves as lesser than her or more privileged than her. Even at university, where equality of the sexes and of class, and the rigour of inquiry and of debate was theoretically supreme, there were times when avoidance reigned and the subtle tendencies that drove her mad to no end manifested themselves unconsciously. Atratinus leaned closer, his mouth between her ear and her neck. The pleasant cologne that the Porcuian wore filled her nostrils, just as her perfume filled his. He breathed in deeply, "I don't despise you, Eleonore; nor do I think that we are chained to our circumstances." He straightened himself and finished the last of his champagne, handing the glass over to a silent but watchful servant who had observed the interaction. "When you are able to travel to Porcu, I will make certain that you visit our opera houses." Edited by Porcu, Mar 24 2013, 10:07 PM.

Quite some time had passed since Eleonore had rescued Adrian from his awkward situation with the Porcuan President and the Russians. What at first she regarded as a semi-enjoyable favor for the Margrave gradually developed into a very euphoric encounter with an extremely tantalizing individual. There was something about Atratinus, this former foreigner who she knew absolutely nothing about, that intensely interested her and whose presence she was finding more and more pleasurable. After her initial blunder of asking him about the obviously world-renowned Porcuian theater, she felt a sense of increasing stupidity at her attempts to appear more comparable with Atratinus, and abandoning her bothersome royal persona. However, as their conversation advanced she noticed that his gaze often focused upon her longer than any onlooker would deem "appropriate", but this she purposely ignored and strangely enjoyed. She noticed that he too betrayed his better judgement, as the distance between the two became more and more diminished. She found herself entirely at the mercy of his advances, and she almost craved it, before the true reason of her attendance at the ball became clear once again. Where was Adrian, anyway? Still, she felt like a feather in the presence of this once unknown entity. When he had whispered to her that they were not chained by their social constraints she seriously questioned her future. In her deep self-thought she almost missed his last sentence, and she almost stuttered the entirety of her response. "I...e-eagerly await that trip." She said eventually followed by a smile. "I hope you'll be there to accompany me". From afar, Eleonore's brother, Ferdinand, watched his sister's interactions with the Porcuan with growing skepticism. The 19 year old Crown Prince of Austria, like his counterpart Constantine, was responsible for his sister's well-being and chastity. He regarded her elongated discussion with Atratinus to be counter-productive to their true reasons for attendance and he quickly intervened. Without addressing Atratinus, he casually approached Eleonore and gently interlocked his arm with hers. "Come now, I believe Adrian is preparing to address the room". With this the siblings were off, and Eleonore barely had time to turn and address Atratinus. "Til we meet again, Atratinus" she said sincerely with her famous smile.
