I've got some good friends who moved out there last year. I can ask them for advice if you'd like.

Well, you won't be able to afford an apartment in Manhattan, and Brooklyn is also getting expensive, so you might need to look at Jersey City where some of my friends live.

Scy: I need the job, and that is where it is.
NRE: He does. I've spoken with him, though he is of course free to provide any further advice he may have.
Abnar: Please do.
NH: You're right, rent is definitely a concern. I'll look into Jersey City, though now I'm mainly thinking that some of the Queens neighborhoods might be affordable while still not being too distant.

I'm being told that New York commutes suck tremendously, so you'll want to look for a place relatively close to where you work. He'd probably be able to recommend some neighborhoods if you know where you'll be working give or take.

Alternatively, I could just pass your e-mail address directly on to him, and you guys could talk directly.

That is a good question, considering the size of NYC. Where will you be working?

Southern Bronx, a bit north of where the Harlem River empties into the East River. I'm thinking that northwestern Queens might be my best bet in terms of expense vs. commute vs. quality of life.

Sounds like Yankee Stadium!! If so, I want free tickets :D yea, Jersey City would be too far a commute. Path, then two subways - blah. You might get lucky and find something in Brooklyn but then you still have bridges to cross - Queens still has some good areas, but I just don't know what they are.

It's one of the hospitals, actually, so no tickets unfortunately :shy: TC lives in Queens - his area is too far out for me, but I think he know which areas are good. I'm thinking primarily of trying to find something in Astoria now, but I want to have some other ideas too.

Today I visited a friend's apartment in Roosevelt Island, a small island in the east river. I was quite impressed with the environment and it is undoubtedly the least "grimy" area of NYC. It really is a compact little neighborhood more reminiscent of a postwar middle class Northern European or Japanese city. The accessibility situation is somewhat questionable though, as the public transportation service is not as regular as what you would find on Manhattan or urban Queens. The rent is intermediate, not over-expensive but definitely not cheap either.

This friend of mine also told me about the area in the Upper West Side around Columbia University being very affordable and accessible to subways and bus routes, but the infrastructure is run down in some units.

Another suggestion is Riverdale in northwest Bronx, a nice place to live and very accessible to your work place. And we have also discussed Astoria and Long Island City in the past.

Just as a side note for anyone interested in moving to NYC, a car is basically a weekend recreational vehicle here...it's an absolute nightmare to commute by car in the megalopolis during the weekdays and it's much more efficient to ride the bus or subway train.

Thank you TC, Roosevelt Island sounds idyllic.
