Has anyone used it yet? I really like Windows 7 and Windows 8 looks kind of dumb, so I'm curious if there is a good reason to upgrade. Microsoft has a deal for upgrades - Windows 8 Pro upgrade for $40, but that offer's last day is tomorrow. Any thoughts?

My GF got it some months ago and, despite frustrating the outright hell out of her for the first few weeks, seems to be liking it now. I've been told its a bit unstable and there are a great deal of compatibility concerns, but I haven't combed through boards to find out what the worst of the crop are. In all honesty, I never looked much into it since W7 has been treating me well enough that I - at present - don't really feel any need or desire to "upgrade."

Besides, "new" does not mean "improved."

I mostly feel the same way you do, which is why I haven't bought it already, and the big features, like the new interface, look like negatives to me. But I figured I'd see if anyone here likes it to decide if it is worth taking advantage of their offer.

If I had another computer to experiment with, I'd test it out, but I don't want to risk damaging or bricking my computer somehow in doing so.

After some thinking and taking into consideration your opinions, I decided not to bother. Windows 7 is great, and the new features of Windows 8 don't seem appealing, at least the prominent ones. To be honest, it looks like a downgrade in terms of user interface. Certainly not worth reinstalling Windows for.

Mirror, mirror on the wall, who's the lurkiest of them all?
W8 can go jump off a very high cliff.

The Metro interface, while great for tablets, isn't something I want on my desktop. At all. That, and the (actually rather good) compatibility features present in 7 were ripped out with a machete in the "upgrade," so good luck playing any older games.

I didn't know that. That's a dealbreaker. Thanks for mentioning that.
