Field Marshal

Stiofán Pól Ó Siadhail sipped whiskey on the balcony of his villa, overlooking the city of Antioch. Across from him sat his sons, Uilliam and Muiredach, on his left his daughter, Aoibhe, and on his right his wife, Sibéal. The were eating a steak dinner he himself had cooked, for though the family had a chef, Stiofán still preferred to cook himself when he was able, as did Sibéal. Thus sat here a family of the Irish nobility, now a prominent Roman family, the clan Sedulii. Within the Roman Empire, Stiofán was known as Stefanus Sedulius, as he had been known by the Romans ever since he had set up the state of Sedulion so many years before. Now he was a respected Roman citizen. Uilliam, former High King of Ireland, was now Uilliamus Sedulius Stefanianus. The loss of Ireland had been a major blow to the clan, and plans were now being discussed on how to retake it. Stiofán began, "Uilliam, you had your chance to save Ireland and you failed. I had entrusted this task to you, but it is now clear I must return to Ireland myself and organize a rebellion against the Normans." Uilliam responded, "Father, you know you have my deepest apologies..." "It is not I that you should be apologizing to, but rather the Irish people. For it is them that you failed, not I." "Of course, father." Muiredach intervened, "An open rebellion against the Normans will surely fail. They defeated every last holdout of the Irish military, and now only unorganized guerillas remain to fight them." Stiofán responded, "Of course, Muiredach. That's why *I* have to go there myself. To organize them. Bring back a resistance movement similar to the old IRA. But event that won't be enough. I'll be sending you to talk to the Russians." "The Russians? What?! Why me?" "Well, you've taken care of most of your work here in Antioch. You've done well here as an official, and you'll have respect as a diplomat. You'll be fine. Your brother can look after your tasks while you are away. I can think of no one better suited for this task." "Why not send Uilliam?" "That should be obvious, Muiredach. Uilliam has lost face with the Russians." Uilliam looked down with sorrow. Sibéal spoke, "Now Stiofán, you should be nicer to your sons..." Stiofán responded, "Ah, of course, my love. I forget myself... I apologize, Uilliam." Uilliam still sulked, but responded, "You have nothing to apologize for father. It was my failure. Excuse me..." Uilliam got up and left the room. Aoibhe spoke up, "Aren't you all forgetting something? You can't just go in and overthrow the Normans without some plan for the new government. You aren't seriously just going to reestablish the old government, are you? It had serious flaws and failed because of its flaws. And who are you going to put on the throne? The Normans killed off any prominent O'Neills still in Ireland." "Muiredach." "Me? Jeez, do I have to do everything?" "Yes." Stiofán laughed. "But I'll have to resign my posts here in Antioch!" "And your brother will take them up, don't worry." "But I want to stay here!" "Muiredach... you're the only one left suited to be High King of Ireland." "Why not you?" "I need to run the Order. I really don't have time to be king of something anymore. I am the Grandmaster, and that is enough." "Fine..." The butler stepped in, "There is a call for you, dominus." "Ah, thank you, Cloelius. I shall take it in my ready room. I am just about done with supper anyways." Stiofán wiped his mouth off with a napkin and left the room. ----- Edited by Sedulius, Jan 26 2013, 12:58 PM.
