Strangely enough, lately I've gotten sucked into this MMO called Swords and Potions where you run an item shop. It's free-to-play, but you can spend money on it if you're impatient, (apparently everything becomes accessible for free eventually.) If anyone's interested, we can guild up. I'm still in the early part of the game, but later I'll probably need to join a guild to protect myself from ruthless competing shopkeepers who will hire thugs to try and vandalize my shop or do other mean things.

E, that sounds interesting. If I have time, I might give it a try. Thanks for the tip.

Seems like an interesting game so far. It'd be better if you didn't have to pay not to wait between days.

A lot of people seem to say that, but the game is so addicting I feel like I might waste even more time than I do currently if the game didn't force me to go do something else for a while occasionally.

Btw, my player name is Eastanarx, and I've got a blacksmith and a carpenter. My understanding is that until later in the game, the best guild participation strategy is to treat them as highly temporary ad-hoc alliances devoted to achieving clearly stated improvement goals and then disbanding to avoid fees. Also, it might be worth considering staying in the rent-free countryside for longer than you might be tempted to, because I've basically been treading water lately at the city gates. I mean, I'm still acquiring more recipes and building up inventory, but my cash supply seems to hover around 5-6k, and I've only had one successful quest so far.

Well, I started, and I am still in the countryside with a blacksmith and a carpenter. Making money but a level 3, I believe. I have NOT joined a guild yet, but I am open for suggestions!

I've stuck around the countryside so far. I feel like I'd have to build up my inventory and gold reserves quite a bit before I'd consider moving the the city gates. My name is PapaTroll.

I signed up, but something must be wrong. On the Swords and Potion site I only see lists of rankings - I don't see any way to actually play.

Edit: N/M - it is working now.

Ok, I like the game a lot. It's a lot of fun! I agree with E that without the built in time limit I'd probably be spending too much time. I could easily have burned the whole day playing that. Can we start a guild for our group?

At what point is it worth it to start a guild, E?

I'm not sure. I'd recommend checking out the wiki and reading up on strategy. I only skimmed the bit about guilds and so I likely have some misconceptions. I've only been playing this game for maybe a couple of days longer than you guys so I'm no expert. But I think we can at least add each other as friends, which should make it easier to start a guild when we need to.

One reason I like this game is because if it was set in modern times it could be called "Guns and Dope." Accordingly, I propose the Guns and Dope Party (GaDP, unless already taken,) as the name of our eventual guild.

EDIT: I couldn't figure out how to add friends, but I still feel like I read somewhere that it was possible. I made the GaDP anyway, and added Al (PapaTroll,) but I don't know anyone else's names... Also, life imitating art, today I've been alternating between watching my carpenter saw wood and when the game makes me wait I've been going outside *gasp* and sawing fallen trees down to wood-stove size.

Will do. What crafts do you make? Also, by the way, always accept your achievement rewards when you first get them, (or at least soon,) because I tried saving some up and it seems like they might have expired.

I have a carpenter and a tailor right now. Unfortunately, I once accidentally hired a lower level carpenter to replace my initial carpenter, so he has fallen behind in experience :( I usually try to get the achievement rewards when I notice them.

I joined the guild, yay!

I'm going to go ahead and restart. I'll grab the other two workers. The ones that are neither blacksmiths nor carpenters. A little diversity seems like it shouldn't hurt. And I didn't like where my shop was at for the moment anyways.

Edit:
Looks like I need another guild invite.

City gates are unpleasant. I only get one or two customers a day and they keep trying to lowball me. I can barely cover my expenses. I didn't move to City Gates unil my reputation was too high to progress anymore in the Countryside, and I was doing quite well in the Countryside, but the City Gates residents seem too arrogant to pay a fair price.

Yes, I got lowballed constantly at the city gates. I was slowly going broke there before I restarted.

Does anyone understand how thugs work? I have one in the back of my store now. If I want him to get experience, do I have to send out to go cause trouble? Or can I just leave him around to defend my store? I'm not really interested in causing trouble for other shopkeepers. Peaceful competition is more my style.

NH, if I had your name I could send you an invite.

Yeah, these city folk have no respect. That was my initial experience with the city-gates as well, though lately I seem to have hit a sweetish spot in terms of almost always having useful items of comparable prices to what people are looking for and I've managed to build back up to 10k while still building up a nice inventory.

As far as I understand, thugs tend to be a waste of money until your newbie protection runs out, which doesn't seem to have happened to me yet, despite approaching day 100 and lvl 13. Again, the wiki probably has more info, I've only skimmed it.

Thanks for getting the sorceress and tailor, Al, the diversity that gives us should far outweigh the cost of restarting as early in the game as we are. I'll re-invite you as soon as I get a chance.

As far as hiring new, less experienced craftspeople goes, it seems like it could definitely be worth it to get a higher base number for the basic work skill, (which determines how quickly items are produced,) and also could help cut costs if paying high wages is starting to hurt your bottom line. Since the distribution of skills for your craftspeople is random, hiring a new worker might even help get a better distribution in the long-run.

I started selling to people, for the most part even if they were lowballing me. I've started being able to make a profit again, at least 2 out of every three days. I was inching my way back up to about 8K when I completed a quest and got a 30K reward. I now have about 38.5K in gold.

I noticed. I even delegated leadership to you because I figured, well if he can make bank like that he oughta be the one leading the guild. When I saw it I assumed it was your countryside profits, but a quest, you say? What kind of quest? One you took on, or one you sponsored? The few quests I've sponsored typically earn me less than 1k.

I just took on a quest to build a bridge so that the farmers will be able to sell their produce in the city, but it seems like it's going to take a while as my carpenter only has so many cooperation points to spend. Speaking of cooperation, I'm checking the wiki now to see if there are any shop improvements we can make for each other that would be worthwhile...

EDIT: Apparently this bridge will need tons of blacksmith coop points too, so I probably won't be able to help with improvements for a while...

I've capped out in the countryside now. I've been crafting five of every item I can without leveling my craftsmen, research, craft up to five again, then level up enough to research the next recipe, then repeat. Seems to work pretty well. I'm going to wait in the countryside until I have about 20k gold then make the move to the city.
