I swear I've made several threads like this, but was unable to find any of them. Eh, just let this one fade into obscurity as well. Posted Image Posted Image These maps take all the landmass of the world and move it 90 degrees. With everything relocated, our old poles are now at the equator and Antartica is completely free of ice as a lush, tropical island continent. This makes for quite the interesting alternate universe. Colonization would be greatly reduced, given the smaller amount of land that would remain to be discovered as the "New World" can be found easily and without fear in the central tropical sea. |

I have seen that before, but I am still glad you posted it. Perhaps we could use it to create a new RP world? |

We were looking to do an alternate map for one of the NS2 revivals and I was just wondering how our nations would have played out in this world.

It would be a good world to just make up some countries without worrying about real life histories and cultures. |

I like this idea, mind if I hop in on this RP group? My friends and I used to stuff like this all the time in Middle School. We would make up random worlds, and either play a DnD campaign as explorers, or play as nations. It was really fun. |

Yeah, or our 1452 game. Even have the magnetic pole shift happen abruptly, so we could keep all the history up to it, (if we wanted,) and then it'd be a sort of post-apocalyptic world, or at least post-cataclysmic. Doesn't have to be 1452 though, I know that ship has sailed, but I'd be up for something of the sort, or even split a parallel universe off of our current NSWR timeline, maybe, 2012 pole shift, anybody? |

That map gives me ideas. I'd never want to specifically use that map, but it gives a good basis for continent placement when designing a custom map. I find the two hardest things when free drawing a map are continent shape and continent placement. It always has similarities to our own world. This map gives a good guide to making a world that would not be similar. Shape would still be a little tough, but it wouldn't be so bad after the placement is so well handled. But I mean, have you noticed even in the big titles the maps suck? The Elder Scrolls is great, but a child could have come up with the giant rectangle that is Tamriel. It was fine for Arena (which honestly made it more creatively shaped than in later titles), but Tamriel really needs some rethinking in terms of shape. Then also take a look at the WoW map. Again, it's perfect for fitting within the area of your screen, but the map design is horrible. |

Determine a number of continents and get an equal number of darts. Throw the darts at a dartboard and mark the locations; viola, continents. Closer darts can be like Europe and Asia; right next to each other with often arbitrary distinctions between, while farther ones are large islands or more like the Americas. Toss in arctic tundras and equatorial deserts, throw up some mountain ranges and add a few more deserts/amazons. It's a beautiful world. |

On the subject of cool maps, I made this. Posted Image This website has some really great tools for RPGs, but I mostly use the town name generator and fractal world generator. God knows I've spent hours playing with that fractal world generator. |

I really want to gloat about this map a friend and I just spent a couple days making. Posted Image I really like this map, it's the Earth if sea level was raised 250 meters through some impossible means. I used this neat tool to show what would be flooded, and then used photoshop to cut out the borders and country names. I also turned all the red flooded areas into ocean. I'll probably be writing up a Victoria 2 or Civilization mod for this map. Probably the former, the Clauswitz engine is really easy to mod. Edited by Margrave, Nov 29 2012, 10:56 PM.

Posted Image I'm thinking I'll make this thread my personal cartography log with commentary (provided by you all :D ) and share interesting things I find every once in a while. I've always known the Mercator project was terrible, but didn't think it was this bad. I agree with the "immappacy" term, though I would try to come up with a better name. |

Interesting - Africa is pretty huge, especially when you consider that the USA is pretty big, as are China and India. |

Hmm, South America must be equally large to what I have percieved all these years. This is why every home needs a globe. I am buying one for Christmas now for sure!! |

I have a globe, though I want a new one so I can have one with South Sudan on it. I also have a few Atlases, one of which I believe also has the old Soviet Union in it. One really should have at least one world map in their home or at least bookmark one on the computer lol |
