High above the Atlantic Ocean, in a dirigible powered by the sun, sat Abel Joohns and Andrew Monroe. Their voyage was proceeding at a gentle pace, and the two men had ample opportunity to converse. After offering his guest a glass of water, Andrew began: "So, Elder Joohns, I have heard that the Amish do not use modern technology within their community. I am skeptical of such sweeping generalizations, and so I must ask, how true is this? And what sorts of exceptions has your community made, if any?" Posted Image |

Joohns cleared his throat, and began, "Mr. Moore, that is a frequent question asked of our people, but I will try to give you a more complete answer than we generally do. It is not that we fear modernization as some primitive people might, it is that we value hard labor as a soul clensing experience. There is no religious reason for us to reject the tractor for the horse and ox, or electricty for lights of oil; it is the value we place on having the means of our production come from our souls. In addition, we scorn pride - it is an insult to God to stand proudly before him; it is better to be humble before God lest he be displeased. Ownership of things like tractors, combines, cars, would become items of pride for the owners; those with the better tractor looking down at those with less. This is sinful, and thus, we scorn the trappings of pride to keep ourselves humble. We dress plainly, we live plainly, we work with our backs and hands not afraid to get dirty in God's good earth. I hope that answers your question." |

"Hmm... I can see how one might find great value in such a way of life. I have chosen a different path, but I believe you will appreciate it nonetheless. Look now, we approach the East Anarx!" From their high vantage point, the whole of the main archipelago was visible. The seas around the islands seemed to shimmer and change color, but as they drew nearer it became clear that the ocean was teeming with boats and ships of every imaginable variety. As the multitude of crafts shifted and moved it created the illusion of a churning, swirling rainbow sea. A glittering golden rectangle of seeming order stood out amidst the dynamic ataxia of the sea. When Joohns pointed it out, Monroe replied, "Ah. Eldorado Atlantica. I don't think you'd like it there, I'm afraid. 'Tis a city of pride, of opulence, of sin. But look, just to the north is the island Aequalitas, where we're going." The irregularly-shaped landmass was mostly wooded, though a few fields and small villages were visible. The dirigible descended and alighted on a small hillock just outside of a village. As the two men stepped down onto solid ground, a group of children ran towards them, laughing and calling out. "Uncle Drew! Uncle Drew! Take us up on the blimp! Up! Up!" "Up? Up, you say?" Monroe scooped up one of the little ones and swung her through the air in a great arc above his head. She was still giggling wildly as she returned to earth. "Now, now, children, you know the blimp needs time to recharge its batteries, and so do I," Monroe said with a grin, "First, I want you all to meet my new friend, Abel." The children hopped around excitedly, touching the Amish man's beard and marveling at his funny hat as the entire joyous procession made its way into the village. Before they arrived at the inn, the children left them in peace, running off to examine a far more interesting object, some kind of shiny beetle. From the doorway, a busty woman with blonde curls stood with her hands on her hips and a halfhearted attempt at a scowl on her face. "You are late, Sov. Monroe. As usual." Her frown melted into a smile as she received a peck on the cheek and a friendly squeeze of her right breast. "Who's your handsome friend, here? Ah, no matter, we'll have time for that later. Come in and have a seat, the meeting's already begun." |

Joohns turned to Moore as they followed the woman inside and said, "I find the joy and playfulness of your children so refreshing! After traveling to several countries lately filled with the weight of strife and war and seeing it weigh heavily on the hearts of the children, seeing these beautiful youths fills my heart with joy! I am also happy to see the wonderful, open affection you show to your woman. Such wonderful playfulness and love cannot be disguised! This seems a good place." |
