Parking Garage 28-C, Downtown Tbilisi...

10:43 PM

Dmitri Petrov, checked around the corner of the lot before calmly strolling towards the outdoor elevator. As he walked, he took his time locating each and every surveillance camera within visual range of his intended target. Once he had approximated each and every viewpoint from the cameras he calmly walked out of focus and slightly adjusted the angle to the left to obscure its view. He then walked over to a modest silver Honda Accord which bore a Democratic-republican bumper sticker.

After crawling under the vehicle's undercarriage, Dmitri revealed a carefully constructed 30kg pipe bomb and began attaching it directly under the driver side car seat. Then, using the knowledge he had learned from the Whaladyan GFID, he rigged the bomb's arming mechanism to the car's ignition. He then checked the bomb's stats and slowly crawled out from under the car carefully checking the lot for potential witnesses. Once the coast was clear he quickly exited the lot without entering the view of any cameras.

11:59 PM

Giorgi Bakradze, Tblisi's Democratic-Republican local leader, briskly walked to his car after a long night of overtime. The Democratic-Republicans had enjoyed a recent and steady rise in public opinion as of late and were eagerly attempting to double their outreach, thus forcing Bakradze to stay late to finish some last minute phone calls and paperwork. The man entered his car and slowly entered his keys into the ignition before twisting his wrist and starting the cars engine. Almost immediately, the roar of the engine was replaced with the larger roar of a colossal explosion, the likes of which sent shock waves and debris several feet within the closed space damaging many vehicles close by.

Needles to say, Bakradze hadn't even had time to react as the explosion obliterated his car and body. When Tbilisi police arrived at the scene they could barely identify the man, and were only tipped by the bumper sticker which miraculously still clung to the surviving piece of rear bumper. 250 feet away at an overlooking office building, Dmitri Petrov smiled and texted "Success" to an unknown source.

The assassination of Giorgi Bakradze is a most unfortunate drawback. He was an important party figure and upstanding individual.
Demoralizing and discouraging as this may be, there are benefits.
It is critical that you use his murder and framing of the party in regards to the killing of Niko Tordia to your party's advantage. Leverage these incidents and appeal to the public - boost party image, reputation, and credibility while tearing down that of the opposition.

You will find that a positive outcome is possible in all of this. Keep your hands clean.

To: Interested Parties,

We appreciate the condolences of our party's recent lost, Mr Bakradze was a loyal member of the cause and will certainly be missed. We have greatly considered those points which you have expressed and, while trying not to completely capitalize on this tragedy in respect to the Bakradze family, we do believe that this murder was politically motivate and could help us. As always, we appreciate your continued support.

Rustavi....

Vice-Chairman Uznadze shakes his head in agreement. "A direct line of transportation between Maralsava proper and your territory in Sinop would certainly prove very beneficial for our people. We do have airport facilities through our territory that can handle international flights. We also, thanks to initial Russian investments and investments various governments here in Transcaucasia have made since, several well developed rail-lines. Shipping from the Georgian coast to Sinop also seemed to be a viable point of travel that can certainly be exploited. Did Marslava have in preference or further suggestions on such things?"

A Cafe in Tbilisi...

"I can understand the political advantages of such an alliance" said Zhordania. "I know some of the local leaders of the Democratic-Republicans personally. We do share a very similar platform as far as our parties are concerned, we being a more socialist-minded party that the Democratic-Republicans. Our biggest differences come when talks about social welfare programs are brought up in debates, but even these differences could possibly be bridged. If I had to say anything, I feel our biggest problem in cooperating between us are our ethnic differences. We Mensheviks are predominately Georgian, the Democratic-Republicans are predominately Armenian. We Georgians did help the Armenians to establish themselves in recent years but many had their fears that we Georgians were trying to influence their development for our benefit. In truth nothing could be further from the truth but sadly propaganda we feel was spread by the Azerbaijani, helped to create skepticism in many Armenian communities. Perhaps, if a member of your party were to agree to come to the meeting as well, the Democratic-Republicans would not only be willing to talk but may even be willing to agree to some form of an alliance."

"Of course establishing an embassy is only the first step in what will hopefully be a more permanent relationship between Transcaucasia and Porcu. However, again I must stress that this provisional government can only make so many assurances to your people and their government. The elections will cement a party with which this provisional government will work with to establish a permanent government and state. At that time the Commonwealth will cease, as will this provisional government and its power. I will have the ability to make recommendations and believe that the committee as a whole will be kept on for a while afterwards to give consultation to the new government but in the end, it will be the party that wins the election that ultimately can decide the fate of future relations between our people."
"Of course." Cesca replied sharply and with a smile. He was pleased to see that being a Porcuian carried some weight even in the mountains of the Caucasus.

"Speaking of a permanent government, Parliament has noted, not with comfort, of the increasing level of violence. Democracy can be somewhat disorganized, but I think you'd agree that political assassinations are another matter entirely. I certainly do not mean to pry or to seem insulting, but is the Provisional Government capable of dealing with the sudden rise in intimidation tactics? The Republic carries great weight internationally and I would be happy to call upon ICON to assist Transcaucasia in establishing an atmosphere conducive to free and fair elections.

Haraud Amdell had been amused when some other assassin had a similar idea to his and actually carried it out before he carried out his. In a way, it would make his task all the more easier and the motive more believable. After wiping the grease from his hands and sliding out from underneath the car, he looked around to make sure no one was around. After seeing no one, he hurried from the area.

About an hour later, the Communist local party leader of New Leningrad, Petre Kikodze, returned from the auditorium where he just gave a public speech to his car. After climbing in and buckling his seat-belt, her placed his key into the ignition. At that point, his car's clock suddenly flashed "12:00am" before he was promptly blown up by the ensuing explosion.

Following their comb of the area, authorities only found one clue: A Democratic-Republican campaign poster pinned to a nearby building that had the words "Eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth" scrawled across it.

Chairman Marjanishvili nodded his head as the Foreign Minister spoke. He understood that the situation was getting ever more worse with each passing day and his own threats had done little to cease the violence.

"At the formation of the Central Committee, the government of Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, and the rest agreed to the formation of a joint military task force. Not as large as any standing army mind you, but something large enough to contain pockets of discontent. We've been assessing the situation since the first attack and we believe we have a new course of action with which to take. I will, however, keep your offer of support in the International Commonwealth of Nations in mind. It may indeed be necessary but, and perhaps at great risk to my own footnote in history, I will reject such an offer for now. We are not a proud people, but for once in our history we have a chance to change our own futures and I believe the people want this to be their doing and no one elses."

Geno Kantaria was one tired son of a bitch. For most of the day he'd been running from this place to that, trying his best to sell the National Unity Party's message to the undecided. It wasn't an easy job, hell they told him as much from the beginning when he took the position of party leader for the Sukhumi chapter of the party. Still, his father had been a firm believer of hard work and always preached how it, and little else, paved the road towards success. His father had also been a firm believer that every hard day of work was a good enough reason as any to visit the local watering hole before going him. In his honor, Geno followed his father's tradition and almost like clockwork visited the same bar after work. Sometimes dragging himself to the bar stool, he'd order a tall one and enjoy every last sip of the cold spirit.

The bar's regulars knew him well enough and most were sure-fire voters for the National Unity party so Geno rarely felt the need to politics. Instead, he generally found himself arguing sports with some of the other patrons. Tonight was no different and as usual, Geno made himself heard over most of the rest about his opinion. It didn't really matter the topic, perhaps what was more interesting about this situation was that he'd gotten in this argument with a couple of gentlemen that most had never seen in the bar before. With everyone, including the bar keep, good and liquored up by this point no one really had the sense the call the guys out on it. Instead they argued and eventually the two men left and Geno had his last few rounds before calling it a night. It was naturally late and there was a part of him that was kicking himself for staying out so late. He was going to hate waking up in the morning but decided not to worry about it much for the moment. The bigger problem he had was making it home, which he was already failing at as he stumbled down the street.

He was about a block away when they grabbed him, tossing him into the alley before the rain of fists and kicks came. He barely knew what was going on when the first couple of punches were thrown and didn't have the coordination to defend himself. Before he blacked out, he could have swore it was the guys from the bar but that wasn't much for him. He wouldn't be found until the next morning, an older gentlemen throwing some trash into a dumpster found his bloodied body and called the authorities. By the time they got him to the hospital, though still alive, Geno had slipped into a coma.

PROV. GOVERNMENT ACTS FOR GOOD OF THE PEOPLE

Tibilisi: A spokesman for the Provisional Government of Transcaucasia announced today that the government was authorizing the deployment of troops in response to the growing violence in the country. This coming just days after a string of assassination attempts claim the lives of Giorgi Bakradze, Petre Kikodze, and Geno Kantaria. Though a survivor, Mr. Kantaria remains in a comma.

"The attacks and growing violence in this country must come to a halt" spokesman Alexander Patarshvili told reporters at a small press conference. "These assassinations are putting a stain on the very credibility of our people having the ability to operate under our own. A free and fair election is what the provisional government has promised the people of the region and it is what we intend to deliver. To that end, the provisional government is authorizing the deployment of military personnel to aid in the local law enforcement of those major cities where political parties are operating most heavily. We are also assigning military personnel to leaders, both national and local, to aide in the personal protection of these people. Now is not the time to allow fear to grip the people of Transcaucasia. For too long we have sat in the shadows, fearing that our people had no better future than to live in the squander and rumble left to us by our forefathers. Now is the time for hope, the time for action, and the time of the people's voice." Spokesman Patarshvili took a few questions from the crowd after his announcement, most concerning the announcement made. Perhaps the most pertinent question being how soon the troops would begin arriving to which the spokesman answered immediately.

The voilent has certainly been a concern for many in the region since campaigning began several weeks ago. To date, five political leaders have been assassinated and one, Geno Kantaria who was the most recent victim of a suspected assassination attempt, remains in a comma. For some, the assassinations have been a new point of interest in open debates between the parties with much finger pointing as to the culprits behind the attacks. Still others have been voicing their concerns over outside interference being the source of the violence. While both sides have merit to their arguments, neither have provided sufficient evidence in order to back their claims as true fact. Politically speaking, the region is at a campaign cross-roads and there is as of now no clear leading party. Though strongest at the start, both the National Unity Party and United Conservatives have since suffered in the polls, allowing initially for the rise of the Democratic-Republicans. However, today the three are now having the share close numbers with the Mensheviks and Communists, leading to the virtual stalemate between the parties. Knowing that eventually someone will lead the way forward, many fear that this break in the stalemate will only come with increased violence despite the government's efforts to create the opposite.

OOC: Just as a note, the military presence and guard is only meant to make assassinations harder but are in no way a signal for them to cease completely.

It seemed his last target had been targeted by some manner of mugging. No matter, they had left the job unfinished.

Haraud Amdell, clad head to toe in solid black, scaled the side of the hospital that contained Geno Kantaria in the dead of night. After he reached the roof, he crept over to the roof access door and carefully picked the lock. Once open, he crept down through the stairwell, keeping to the shadows and out of view of the security cameras. When he arrived at the appropriate floor, he crouched low and continued to remain with the shadows. After traversing past a few doors, he finally saw the guards come into sight, positioned outside of Geno's door. It was time for action.

He pulled on a gas mask, and retrieved a grenade full of gas from his belt. After pulling the pin free, he tossed the grenade down the hall where it eventually rolled to a stop in front of the guards. Almost immediately after, the gas was released and the guards slipped into unconsciousness. Haraud hurried down the hall to the door, opened it, and slipped into the room. There, inside, Geno was hooked up to a bunch of equipment while he lay on a hospital bed, deep in his coma. It was time to finish him off.

It was a simple matter for a skilled assassin like Haraud Amdell who came from a long line of equally skilled assassins. He walked up to Geno, grabbed him by both sides of the head and twisted until he heard the satisfying snap. It wasn't long until all of the machinery started screaming alerts that Geno was dead. He smirked, fetched something from his belt and tossed it onto Geno's chest, then hastened out of the room before people came to investigate the flat-lining alerts.

He left the same way he came and by the time authorities arrived, he was long gone. Authorities found the item that he left on Geno's chest and discovered it was a Democratic-Republican campaign pamphlet that was ironically titled "Finish What You Start."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Meanwhile, following the news that each of the parties were deadlocked in the polls, the National Unity Party found that it received a dramatic increase in funds from one of its usual contributors, Dahak Real Estate, Ltd.
Foreign Minister Cesca nodded, understanding well the decision being made by the Central Committee.
"Well, know that Transcaucasia has a friend in the Republic."
It appeared as if things would quickly draw to a close, but as a Porcuian Cesca was not displeased in maintaining light banter with his hosts. Doubting that he would return to the Caucasus anytime soon, the Foreign Minister eventually asked if a tour of the capital and part of the surrounding countryside would be possible.
...
Matters had not gone well for the Democratic-Republicans as of late. Apart from regional tensions the greatest source of embarrassment was evidence (fake and clearly planted, but evidence nonetheless) of their involvement in recent spats of violence. Their poll numbers were holding, but voters are fickle beasts, and so the leadership would do well to take some advice from the few Marslavan and Porcuian agents who had made their way to this corner of the world.
Denunciations were common and local party leaders were adamant in every public appearance that a campaign of deceit and slander was being orchestrated. Radio interviews were particularly effective in reaching those towns and villages that dotted the vast and imposing landscape, while television appearances were well planned and rehearsed for the those in the metropolises.
A great deal of hope was being placed in the angle the Porcuian advisors were setting up for the Democratic-Republicans - that of humanitarians and caretakers of all the peoples of the Caucasus. Shipments of basic medical supplies, educational products and materials, and small numbers of farming equipment made their way into the hands of the Democratic-Republicans (all thanks to Porcuian and Marslavan efforts), who divided up the material and divided it up between the various regions and provinces. As one might expect, the poor and lowly were ecstatic and began to see hope in a unified Transcaucasia - that their plight might not continue to be overlooked. Small children and adults alike gathered beside the trucks when they rolled into their village and, try as they might, could not decipher that simple message written in a language they thought had died out a millennium before: "Made in Porcu".
Chairman Marjanishvili thanked Minister Cesca for his time and again assured the Minister that he'd do everything within his power after elections to ensure that relations between the two countries did not go sour. When the Minister passingly made comments on hoping to see a bit of the region, the Chairman eagerly offered him both guide and transportation. Though he almost cringed at even having to say it, he also offer a small detail of security to help protect the Foreign Minister while he remained in the country. Such a pity such things had to be arranged but sadly those were the times they were living in. He suggested the Minister made a special point to see the region of Kakheti, the wine country. A trip to Telavi and cities like it in the region, and one could leave with perhaps some of the finest bottled wine anywhere in the world.
Gagra, Georgia...
The sun shown beautifully over the coast of Gargra, a town on the northeast coast of the Black Sea that is nestled at the foot of the Caucasus Mountains. Well known throughout the region for its subtropical climate, at one time Gargra was a popular health resort for the rich and famous, most notably a playground for the Russian elite. The Georgian War changed all that however, and despite the best efforts of one unsuccessful government after another, the region had yet to recover. Though many of the resorts were but a shadow of their former splendor, others remains and a small culture of artists and artisans kept the city vibrant even in some of the regions most violent times.
For the most part the street remained relatively quiet. A few vendors offered a variety of produce and goods, while many shops and cafes offer places for finer goods and food. Under the umbrella of a small white metal table, nestled each in a small white metal chair, the two men sat and watched the small amount of people as they passed by on the streets. The man sipping his coffee was a relatively young man, as compared to his company. Physically, he seemed well groomed and cared for, no doubt a man of lineage. His hair was the color of dark sand, his goatee was well trimmed and his eyes were dark shade of blue. Though he was foreign it wasn't entirely evident, that is, until he opened his mouth. Though he spoke eloquently, the distinctive twang of his voice was hard to miss.
The man seated across from him, reading the local paper, was a man slightly order, a good five to ten years older. Also physically well groomed and cared for, he wore a subtle attitude about him that disguised his own lineage, a lineage far more prestigious than that of the man sipping his coffee. His hair was a rich, dark brown color as was the goatee he too wore, though his was thicker and more pronounce yet still quite distinguished in style. Perhaps the most striking feature was that of his eyes. A pale green color, this man's eyes seemed to pierce the soul even when he was smiling, they were not eyes one forgot easily. Unlike his company, the man's own accent was more in tune with the local dialect, and he spoke the language quite fluently.
Putting down his paper, the gentleman took a sip of his own coffee and then scanned the street. Satisfied, or perhap not, with what he saw he turned to the man at the other end of the small round table. "Look at them Sebastian" the man said frankly, little tone in his voice. "Look at them, how they pass away the hours."
Sebastian scanned the streets, this being perhaps the third or four time he'd done so since he was served his coffee. Along the street, at this particular moment, a mother was leaving a small children's clothing store. Her relatively well-mannered young son followed in tow as they passed a young man. He himself was no doubt headed towards the bookstore a few shops down, they bought and sold books and in his arms were several well kept volumes. There were a few others here and there, but much like the first two mentioned, nothing was of any particular interest to note.
"They seem content enough to me Nicholas" Sebastian said, his voice putting an emphasis on the "tent" in content.
"An that is the problem my dear friend" Nicholas said, sipping again on his coffee. "They are completely unaware, mostly likely through choice, of the very war that is being waged around them."
"The war?" Sebastian said, a bit confused a war was going on in such an idyllic place. "I have not seen anything on the news or in the papers about a war, though my own grasp of the local language is not as well versed as your own."
"I speak of a war not particularly waged in the open my dear friend, but just as deadly as any other" Nicholas stated. "Look, look here at the paper....at that articles there. Geno Kantaria, apparently murdered in a coma. The police say there is evidence that points to the Democratic-Republicans but I hardly believe such things."
"An I suppose you know who did it?"
"No, of course I don't know who actually killed the man" Nicholas said, a bit disgusted at Sebastian's tone. "Look, Sebastian, you as well as I know that all the world is a game. Your father tried to play it but failed and thankfully he had a thoughtful pair of sons to end his life before true tragedy struck. Much like yours, my father too tried to play the game. His cause was a true one for he, in all his grace and majesty, attempt to right the wrong. Sadly, he died before this was ever accomplished but likely he had a son like myself to take on his work."
"This region of the world endured a great tragedy you see Sebastian" Nicholas said as he continued, "perhaps one of the worst tragedies a place could endure. Those who perpetrated the crime, continue to do so and that is not right. Those who were the victims, are also at play here and while you would think if we are to fix this problem we should help them, that too is not what should happen. No, the victims have in their own misguided way also become the problem and therefore we have only one avenue to take."
"An that is?" Sebastian asked.
"That is...." Nicholas stopped mid sentence after look at his watch. "Oh my we're almost late, come Sebastian." Nicholas rose from his seat, taking his suit jacket and once against placing it on his person. Sebastian did the same and after leaving a tip, Nicholas began walking down the street and Sebastian followed. The two men walked several blocks down the street before taking another side street. This was followed by two more turns before finally taking a small alley way towards the back of a few small buildings. Putting his glove-covered hand up to motion for Sebastian to stop, Nicholas then put one finger up to his mouth before rounding the corner.
Rounding the corner the two men came to a small area between the building, not very large, but large enough. Just as Nicholas was entering the area a third man came into view. He wore a hat and seemed to be making every attempt to not seem conspicuous. Nicholas simply stood there and after looking him up and down, the man moved forward. "There was a crooked man" the gentleman said. "Who walked a crooked mile" said Nicholas. The gentleman seemed a bit relieved, that is, until from another alley emerged a fourth man who said "He found a crooked sixpence" to which Nicholas replied "upon a crooked stile." Utterly confused, the third man looked back towards the new individual who'd just showed up. Instantly upon eye contact the two recognized one another and seemed utterly outraged.
"What is the meaning of this" one man said, to which the other replied "Ah ha, I knew you hand outside connected. The two men then proceeded, to some degree, to have an argument between them though they kept their voices relatively low. Nicholas turned his head slightly back towards Sebastian, shook his head, then turned back to the two men. "Enough" he said as they turned their attention to Nicholas who, at that moment, they realized was holding a silencer-armed pistol. Before they could react the two of them were shot, several times in fact, before they both fell to the ground. Putting away his own pistol he retrieved from his coat two more, of the same make and model, and proceeded to put one in the hand of each man.
"Who were they?" Sebastian asked.
"This poor fool was Gholam Roshdieh, party secretary of the National Unity Party" said Nicholas as he handed the dead man his gun. "An this man, who surprised our dear friend Gholam, was party secretary Cornelius Dubasov of the United Conservatives. Both are puppets of a much deeper scheme you see and in such, have sin against those they swore they would serve for the better." Nicholas took in a deep breath, "smell it Sebastian, its like burnt hair you. Its a taint you don't easily wash off yourself. They verified my suspicions of their duplicity by showing up to this, somewhat impromptu. meeting. Now with the guns in hand and no witnesses to testify otherwise, the rather amateur police department will conclude the killed themselves. Of course the bigger question will be, why they met at all."
"Why would they have met?" Sebastian asked as he looked over the bodies.
"Who knows" said Nicholas, "it is not for us to decide. Instead we will let the speculators, speculate. Its far more amusing that way and besides, we're not done."
"We aren't?"
"Oh no" said Nicholas who was now looking at his watch. "No, we most certainly are not but we mustn't doddle, we have a train to catch...."
Political Article Brief
National Unity Party and Democratic-Republicans clearly in neck-n-neck race in recent polls. Though politically discredited by some after the recent death of National Unity Party member Geno Kantaria, the Democratic-Republicans have gained substantial ground with the public. A new humanitarian effort by the party as seen an increase in poverty-level voters, pledging votes to the party. United Conservatives have now fallen to a close second, with Mensheviks in a close third. Communists party activity has dropped in the recent weeks and has made the party a clear loser in the most recent polls.
While poll numbers seem conclusive, a new developing story out of Gagra, Georgia involving party secretaries for both the National Unity Party and United Conservatives could shift the balance once more. Authorities, after their initial investigation, are claiming that the deaths of Gholam Roshdieh and Cornelius Dubasov are the result of a shootout between the two. While no evidence has surfaced as to while the political opposites would have met in the alley their bodies were found, there is no evidence to suggest foul-play at this time.
We have noticed a steep rise in support for the Democratic-Republicans as of late, and have deemed it entirely necessary to increase funding for your party by twice its monthly income. We hope this increase will allow you to better protect your members and politicians from harm and assassinations.
Additionally, we have become aware of the tenacity of our opponents and request you accept an offer of 800 private military contractors to act as security forces for your politicians. These men are skilled operators and will act openly where the GFID cannot. They will bear no markings that tie them to the Whaladyan government, and therefore are not subject to the same rules as our political advisers. Payment for this service is not required, for a close friendship between our states is invaluable.
We pray for continued success,
Djokia had been presumably a Democratic-Republican party member for many months now, but his real loyalties actually lay elsewhere as did his colleague Khristesia. Late that evening, they had secured the latest of the humanitarian supplies the Democratic-Republicans were distributing in a public warehouse in Yerevan, the city HQ of the party. The warehouse was something of a historical building, protected by the local Hostorical Society and had made the perfect place to distribute the humanitarian goods.
It was just too bad that would never happen.
Standing in a dark alley, Djokia retrieved a small remote from his pocket and flicked the switch as the hour struck 11:00pm. In time, several fires would spread throughout the warehouse and eventually become one, great big fire that engulfed the entire building. Both men watched it burn for a few minutes while a horrified crowd began to accumulate in the area. Eventually emergency responders arrived but they would be too late to save the building. Hostorical buildings burned too well.
After the fire was put out in early morning, an investigation was commenced immediately. What was found was utterly shocking and disorienting. The incendiary devices that had started the fires were found within a number of the crates that had contained the humanitarian goods that the Democratic-Republicans were going to distribute. Had the Democratic-Republicans started the fire themselves, then? was the question on the authorities and media's mind.
After all the assassinations and now this fire with evidence linking them to them to the party, the Democratic-Republicans were looking less like a political party and more like a terrorist organization.
Sukhumi, Georgia....
Night was quickly creeping across the city silhouette of Sukhumi. A sea-side community, it was a beautiful city during the day and some argued even more impressive during the night. Certainly the nightlife itself was a very vibrant and lively scene that left many wanting as many drinks and as much company as one could afford. It just been little over twenty-four hours since the fire in Yerevan and while the events were plastered on every television screen and every paper across the region, the people of the nightlife of Sukhumi didn't seem to care. People still danced, they still drank, and they still seemed to enjoy what little miserable stain of what they choose to claim was an existence. Standing in the alley way, Sebastian took his last drag on his cigarette before throwing it to the street and putting it out underneath his shoe.
"Father always said never to tarnish the body with such filth Sebastian" Nicholas said in a demeaning tone towards his partner. "You should learn to quit.You know I read somewhere that 89% of deaths related to fires was caused by cigarettes."
Sebastian said nothing, he simply nodded.
"Walk with me" said Nicholas and, with Sebastian in tow, the two men began walking down the sidewalk. Occasionally the two men were passed by a group of friends, a young couple, and simply the occasional drunk needed to making it to the street side. "I assume you saw the paper this morning, that fire was a thing of beauty."
"The papers say that the investigators have reason to believe the Democratic-Republicans did it themselves."
"Bah, sheep" said Nicholas, "that's what they want you to think. I know differently, it doesn't matter of course, but I know differently all the same. It was very poetic though, the fire, I'd have liked the shook the man's hand that thought it up. Fire is an interesting thing, its both a destructive force as well as a cleansing one."
Nicholas said nothing as the two continued walking. Passing building after building, person after person, they continued on down the dimly light streets.
"You know I hear that the warehouse was an older building, historic even" said Nicholas, "not unlike this building here." Nicholas stopped and pointed across the street. "The hotel Аҟәа has been here for a long time you know, perhaps one of the oldest and most opulent palaces of rest and relaxation the entire city has to offer."
"It is quite the lovely sight tot he eyes" Sebastian remarked as he gazed upon the building. Its windows were all but dark as the hour towards midnight was growing near. Still, one could still make out much of the ornate nature of the building that made it just a jewel.
"Indeed Sebastian" said Nicholas as he looked down in the dim light of the street lamp and looked at his pocket watch. "Its no wonder that the United Conservatives called it home. They live like the very aristocracy they wish to place in power though, in truth, they are but puppets of a higher power. Yes, it is a very lovely hotel, its simply a shame it has to burn down you know."
"Its going to burn down?" Sebastian inquired, confused.
"Why yes" said Nicholas, "you see as we speak the rooms are filling with a most obnoxious gas from the leaking pipes through the building. Heating by gas can be so tricky in buildings like these, one must inspect the piping readily or things like this can happen." At that Nicholas began walking again and Sebastian followed although still a bit confused. "Yes, those poor souls are all going to die in their sleep I'm afraid as there are no gas detectors in the building to warn them. Of course, that's not really the biggest problem, for you see the building is about to..."
Nicholas was caught short by the immense sound of the explosion just a block or so from where the two men were now standing. All the windows of the hotel blew out, glass going everywhere and now smoke and flames poured out. Turning to Nicholas, Sebastian swore to himself that he saw a twinkle in the man's eye as he looked on at the burning building. Soon, at the two men stood there, they heard the sound of the sirens as the emergency vehicles were now racing towards the scene.
"It can early" said Nicholas as he looked down at his watch again, "I will have to work on that. Ah but no matter now, can't do it over again and I do believe we should be leaving as we've overstayed our welcome my good friend." With that said, the two men continued on their stroll and soon disappeared into the darkness of the night.
FIRES CHANGE THE COURSE OF ELECTIONS
Tibilisi: In yet another case of violence in Transcaucasia, the luxurious hotel Аҟәа burnt to the ground yesterday in the heart of Sukhumi. The fire is reported to have killed almost 100 people, including virtually every high-ranking party official in the United Conservative party. The fire comes only twenty-four hours after a suspicious fire destroyed a historic warehouse.
"Our initial investigation points to a faulty boiler as the cause of the fire" Emergency Chief Alexandre Amilakhvari told reporters at a press conference. "The building, which was initially constructed in 1920, has seen several renovations over the years but has for the most part remained the same building as it was then. The heating system was virtually the same as the system that was initially installed in the building. We are unaware at this time if any sort of tampering was done to the system or if the system was indeed unfit for use but somehow was inspected and allowed to remain." Though Chief Amilakhvari admitted that there remained more questions than answers at the present time, he vowed that the investigation would be thorough. Not long after the press conference held by Chief Amilakhvari, a second press conference was held by the remaining leaders of the United Conservatives, senior most among them being Zurab Beritashvili. "The deaths of many in our party is weighing heavily on our hearts and their lives will never be forgotten by those of us fortunate enough to work so close with them. Most significant to me, was Vladimir Tsutsunava, our party leader. He was a man with purpose and a man with vision. He felt passionately about the future of this region and believed strongly that our future would be most prosperous with a restoration of the Georgian Monarchy. He believed through the monarchy our region would at least see stability, our people finally feel safe, and our children be allowed a truly prosperous future. While I, and the remainder of the party, maintain these beliefs we are also faced with the reality of our situation. Our party has lost many and we cannot, in full confidence of those of us who remain, retain the integrity of this party. That is why, with a heavy and somber heart, I have been instructed by the party to announce our withdrawal from the current elections. While we intend to remain a strong force for our beliefs and ideals in Transcaucasia, we recognize the need to withdraw ourselves at this time."
While many voters must now come to terms with the news of the United Conservative's withdrawal, other voters are having to decide whether to continue their support at all for another party, the Democratic-Republicans. Twenty-four hours before the fire in Sukhumi, another fire in the warehouse district of Yerevan claimed the life of one of the city's oldest structure. The warehouse, dating back to the 1940s, was currently operating as a major distribution center for the Democratic-Republicans and their new campaign strategy of distributing aid to some of the poorest areas of Transcaucasia. The fire was initially believed to be the cause of faulty wiring or perhaps some sort of sabotage scheme however, investigators are now stating they believe the fire was set by the Democratic-Republicans themselves. "Through the course of our investigation we have found several devices that we believe we used to start the fire" Lead investigator Garik Omartian told reporters. "These devices were found in the crates themselves, we believe to conceal them. While our investigation is still ongoing I can say with some certainty that foul play is certainly at work here." While investigators declined to state outright who they believe was to blame for the fires, political opponents to the Democratic-Republicans were quick to point the finger at the party themselves. "There has already been evidence to suggest that the Democratic-Republicans are to blame for recent political assassinations" George Dovlatov, Yerevan Communist party leader, told reporters. "Who is to say that this fire was not their way of further diverting the blame from their party? I for one feel that its high time the Democratic-Republicans be held accountable for their actions." While the National Unity Party has also released similar statements, the Democratic-Republicans maintains its innocence. "This is simply the latest in a clear smear campaign against our party and its political stance" party leader Joseph Sarkisian told reporters while releasing an official statement. "Our party is not at fault in this fire, we are the victims. We firmly believe that there are elements out to smear the integrity of our party and work against us to sway public opinion. We refuse to stand down, we refuse to take these accusations lightly, and we refuse to end our campaign before election day. The people will see this as just another attempt by others to stop our success."
Despite refusing to back down from their campaign, the Democratic-Republicans are already suffering from this latest situation. Analysts have already predicted that by the end of the week, the National Unity Party with be given a clear lead. Interestingly, however, the analysts seem somewhat divided as to who will be in second. Some analysts say that the Communist party, a party that has been in last for much of the elections, could gain substantial support from Democratic-Republicans. However, some believe that the Mensheviks and Democratic-Republicans could work out a last-minute alliance and join forces to pose a real threat to a National Unity victory. Though officially neither party was willing to make a comment on the matter, both parties are not as politically different and a union could indeed greatly threaten the other parties from any political success. While a union may be out of the questions, the parties have begun beefing up their security, including an increased security presence at National Unity headquarters. Elections are scheduled to be held in two weeks time.
POLLING STATIONS OPENED, SECURITY HEIGHTENED
Tibilisi: Polling station were opened at dawn to crowds of hundreds, all waiting to cast their first votes for a new Transcaucasia. Though the election season has seen various political shifts as well as horrific bouts of violence, the people of Transcaucasia feel confident that once a new government is formed, stability will at last come to the region.
"I am the first of my family to vote" Natela Kobuladze, a young woman from Khobi told us after having cast her vote. "Our people have suffered greatly from the constant political instability and warfare that has plagued this region. Though these elections have sadly cost the lives of many, I am hopeful that their conclusion will bring peace. That young people like myself will be given the chance of an education, work, and a way forward." Natela was just one of many that waited in the cold of the night until the first rays of light began over the horizon, signifying the start of a new day. For many of them, the elections being held today are the first signs that change may truly be coming to the region. Since the end of the Georgian War, the region of Transcaucasia has been plagued by political instability and war. The divided Georgian states warred with themselves during the Dominion Wars, keeping the international conflict out of the region but causing no less loss of life during that time. The conflicts between the two Georgian States were not contained to Georgia alone, and in time also included Azerbaijan and Armenia. Since that time the entire region has been one campaign after another, one government toppled by another. However, like Natela, many in the region feel that one the elections are over, the new government will present the first step towards normalizing the region and bringing peace.
To ensure that the elections go as smoothly, the provisional government has placed security personnel at every polling station as well as using regular patrols throughout the region. "Each polling station will have no less than 10 security personnel" Chairman David Marjanishvili told reporters. "We are also placing regular military patrols throughout each major city as well as throughout the countryside. We feel quite confident that these elections shall go smoothly and that we shall be able to retain peace during this most pivotal time in our history." Though political parties are barred from stationing personnel at polling stations, the parties have made final pleas to the people. "The time of our ascendance is upon us" Mikail Isakhali, leader of the National Unity Party told voters at his last party rally before the election. "Transcaucasia shall be a beautiful country, an envy to all the Middle East. We can do this, but remember that we can only do it as a united people, with a united party." Though many believe the National Unity Party has made the strongest case to the voters, many are not counting out the Mensheviks. "The people of the Transcaucasus have been given a choice." Meliton Zhordania stated in a radio spot a few hours before election. "The power of liberty, of freedom of choice, is paramount to many other civilizations throughout the world. The time to grasp this fundamental truth is now, and with it we too will become a great nation. The choice for the future is clear." Though some political analysts believe National Unity Party is the favored, others believe the Mensheviks shall give them a run all the way down the wire. However, interestingly enough the Communist Party has made one final push, many believing it may help upset the final outcome entirely. Speaking in front of a gather crowd yesterday, party leader Zurab Akbar-Hazrat made his party's final plea while passing out relief aide to a local orphanage.
"The rival parties have all spoke at length about how they can help the people. The people do not need help, the people are strong. What the people need is not help, its opportunity. The people simply need to be given the chance to succeed, the chance to move forward on equal ground. That is what our party wishes to build, a country of equals and we can but only if the people give us a chance." Though many consider the party out of the race, Democratic-Republicans remain on the ballot and have made many calls to the people for support. Sadly, due to mounting evidence against them, many feel the party will show very poorly at the final count. Though the future of the region remains uncertain, what is clear is that today's vote shall mark a new chapter in the course of the country and many are hoping that that course is one that shall lead the people to a better future.
OOC: I've amended a poll, so if you'll kindly go back to page 1 and vote, I'd greatly appreciate it. :D
NATIONAL UNITY PARTY SET TO DETERMINE NATION'S FUTURE
Tibilisi: After a vigorous twenty-four hours were nearly 99% of the voting-age population came to polling stations to cast their vote, election officials officially announced that the National Unity Party won the major and are now set to determine the new direction of the embattled region.
"To our supporters we say thank you and to the various people of Transcaucasia we say this, give us for years and we will give you a nation to be proud of" party leader Mikail Isakhali told supporters and a victory rally held in the early hours of the morning shortly after the official numbers were announced. "I know we are all tired so I will keep this speech short. We all saw the goal before us, each of the parties, the goal of a prosperous and united region for all the people of Transcaucasia. What set us, the National Unity Party, apart from our rivals was that we have set about a clear vision for the future. We shall help the people to build a national identity, one that all of Transcaucasia can relate to. We shall build industry and we shall create jobs, we will maintain order, and finally make the Transcaucasia a regional power." According to the official numbers, as verified by three different committee panels, the National Unity party received 52% of the votes, the Mensheviks received 34%, and the communist 14%. The Democratic-Republicans, despite strong numbers in various polls early on in the election season, received no votes. This gives the National Unity Party a clear majority in the upcoming parliament, and the power to dictate the formation of the new government. However, in the interest of resolving old issues and creating a new era of cooperation in the region, party officials have told us that the National Unity party is willing to work with the rival factions. "There has been enough fighting and enough bloodshed" Party Press Secretary Mehdi Khalilov stated in a press conference. "Though we have won a clear majority, the party recognizes that the region is not ours alone to shape. What the people need now is unity and we recognize that only through cooperation can we achieve this unity. It will not be easy and certainly there are some subject with which our party feels strongly on but many of us feel confident that some compromises can be made but are only willing to compromise if it benefits the people." Neither Menshevik nor Communist officials were willing to comment on the statements from the National Unity Party, but Mensheviks did hold their own press conference.
"Though we had certainly hoped to have a better showing at the polls, we respect the people's choice and are not detoured by the outcome" party leader Meliton Zhordania stated. "We will continue to strive and work for the betterment of the people. We will continue to press the issues at hand, better schools and education for our youth, healthcare for our sick and elderly, and government-funded retirement programs for our aging working-class. We know these issues have struck a cord with the people and we know it is those issues that got us the support we have. We remain dedicated to those issues and will fight to make them a reality for the prosperity of the people." After speaking at length about the party's immediate plans for the upcoming parliament session, Party Leader Zhordania was joined on stage by Democratic-Republican Leader Joseph Sarkisian and made a surprising announcement. "Though I understand that my party, the Democratic-Republicans, has lost the faith of much of Transcaucasia, we remain dedicated to a democratic nation" Sarkisian told reporters. "Our party leadership has, in the last week leading to election day, discussed at length the focus and future of our party. We came to the conclusion a day before the elections that our goals and the goals of our once Menshevik rivals, were not as different as we may have believed earlier in the election season. That is why I reached out to party leader Zhordania yesterday afternoon after early poll numbers came out and we have, in the last 24 hours, discussed at length the future of our parties. In the end, we've agreed to a party merger, Democratic-Republicans will merger into the Menshevik party and the party will be granted a new name." Party Leader Zhordania exampled. "We shall become the Social Democratic Labor Party, I shall remain party leader with Mr. Sarkisian as my party secretary. We hope that by joining forces, we can bridge the gap between our two parties and create a more united front for the next elections." Though the news was a surprise to many, some analysts believed the Democratic-Republicans would attempt a merger. Their failure at the polls coupled with the weeks of bad publicity has severely chastised their public image. This merger will give the new party a better coverage politically and a stronger volunteer force for the next elections.
The party remaining completely silent after the elections so far is the Communist party. Their third place finish in the polls shows that communist still remains a sore subject for many who may still remember the years of failed communism during the soviet era. While communist officials have attempted to distance themselves from that oppressive era, many analysts have suggested that so far party leadership has simply failed to produce a clear picture of the new party for the public. Many suggest that new leadership may be in order, with a newer and fresher face for the communist, perhaps seeking a younger leader with polarizing public qualities. The first session of the Transcaucasian Parliament is scheduled to meet in Tbilisi by the end of the week. Some of the most pressing tasks and topics will be to officially dismiss the provisional, nominations and voting for leaders to form the new government, and discussing a site for the official capital.
___________________________________________________________________________________________
Yerevan, Armenia...
Though they had lost the election, there was a great frenzy of activity within the headquarters of the Democratic-Republicans. The press conference when Menshevik leadership had occurred before dawn and now that the papers were out, people knew the party was closing up shop and merging. Office officials were now going to spend most of the day packing up, putting much of their files into storage until the initial merger was complete, at which time their party leadership would be dispersed among the various headquarters of the Mensheviks. Trucks waited in the parking lot and filing cabinet after filing cabinet, box after box, was being loaded.
Sitting in his chair behind his desk Joseph Sarkisian, now former party leader, took his time packing his personal items into a box. He'd spent many weeks now in this office and though his time there was relatively short, he'd come to feel it was a second home for him. Oh how he had had such high hopes for his party. Now they were all squashed, scandal after scandal had ripped away public confidence and trust in his party. Though such a thought as his party's demise brought a small tear to his eye he then reminded himself that it wasn't over. Though he disagreed with some Menshevik politics, he saw high hopes for the future of this Social Democratic Labor Party. He had to see hope, after all the Azerbaijani and their National Unity Party now controlled the new Transcaucus. Oh sure there were Armenians and Georgians in their ranks, but the core of the party was Azerbaijani. Their military government had always posed a threat to the Armenian and Georgian States respectfully. Now that they controlled parliament he was worried over what the face of the new government would be.
His thoughts however were interrupted by a knock at the door. "Come in" he stated and the door opened. Konstantin Amilakhvari, party leader of the Democratic-Republicans Sukhumi chapter walked in. Joseph motioned, offering Konstantin a chair but he shook his head.
"I won't be staying long Joseph" he said, laying a piece of paper on his desk. "I just came to give you the Sukhumi Chapter's letter of resignation from the Democratic-Republicans."
Joseph was shocked, "Konstantin, surely you can't mean this? Is this due to my decision to join with the Mensheviks? Surely you can't be foolish enough to think we can recover on our own?"
Konstantin shook his head again. "This is not because the party is merging Joseph although I am doubtful at the success of such a merger. But you Joseph, you sir are very correct in that I am a fool. I am a fool for ever believing that this election was free and fair for it was anything but free or fair."
"Oh come now Konstantin" Joseph exclaimed, "We knew that this election would not be fair, the National Unionists obviously had help but we took foreign aid too."
"Yes, yes we did" said Konstantin, "but we failed because we looked at this as an election. This was never an election, this was a war just like any other our people have endured over the years. Those assassinations were attacks and because we were so blind, we had no defense for it. We should have never agreed to these elections, because now we've handed over the region to those deceitful Muslims."
"We still have the parliament"
"Oh please Joseph, how long do you really think this parliament will last? This democracy is nothing more than an illusion and the National Union Party will continue the illusion for as long as it is useful for their needs. They'll never lose a majority in this so-called parliament, mark my words and when the time comes, they'll sweep it away as soon as they believe they have the power to do so and declare a dictatorship. Then what do you think will happen hmmm? I'll tell you, people like you and the Mensheviks will be arrest as dissidents, separatists, or whatever other label they can think of and you'll be executed or jailed, if you're lucky."
"Your wrong Konstantin" Joseph stated abruptly. "These elections has gotten a lot of international attention, the world is watching us. We have allies now and they won't stand by an let us suffer anymore."
"Now who is the fool Joseph. Do you really think the Scytherians will allow the international community to come in and dictate anything? No, the only way to change anything now is through war. The National Unity party has won this battle, I'll concede that but I promise you, they will not win this war."
"What do you mean by that Konstantin?"
"You don't need to concern yourself over that, in fact its probably best you not know. I respect you enough not to get you involved." Konstantin looked at his watch, "I need to be going now, I have a train to catch to get back to Sukhumi.:
"I don't like this Konstantin, I don't like this it all" Joseph said in a low tone. "I know I can't change your mind, but I won't lie that I fear for your life."
"I fear for all our lives" Konstantin said and with that, walked out of Joseph's office.
Well done, we had the utmost confidence that you would succeed in this election. Seeing that you have risen to the top ahead of your rivals has made every sacrifice we have made justifiable, no matter how many Whaladyan riyals we sent in aide. No that you are legitimate we hope to meet with your leadership soon and discuss the establishment of formal relations.
Should you request it, we will allow our GFID operatives and contractors to remain in Transcaucasia to help your establish order and set up your government. As always this will be free of charge, just as long as you remember who stood by you in dark times. We look forward to meeting with you and congratulations once more.
The Sacred Holy Empire of Scythirus congratulates the National Unity Party in its victory. The Empire expects that under the National Unionists, the Transcaucasia will finally see true order and stability. We would like to discuss a closer international relationship up to and possibly including a military alliance when the National Unity government finds it at its earliest convenience. We would also like to exchange intelligence on dangerous terrorist organizations that are active within the region and may have played a role in the Democratic-Republican Party's unforgivable actions during the elections.
The National Unity Party would like to thank the Sacred Empire of Scythirus for their congratulatory expressions to the people of Transcaucasia. The Scythirian people have been a strong voice in independence and stabilization here in the Transcaucasia. Exchanging intelligence would be key to ensuring further stability and will certainly be well-welcomed by the new government, as would closer relations with the Scythirian people.
It has come to the attention of the Russian Embassy in Tbilisi that the Scythirian government has expressed interested in a military alliance with the emerging Transcaucasian state. However, we would like to remind the Scythirian government of Article Three, Subsection 2 of the Treaty of Transcaucasia which specifically bars the Sacred Holy Empire from such discussions. However, if the Scythirian Empire is interested in amending this provision and the Transcaucasus government agrees, the Russian Empire would also be interested.
Naturally we would not consider such a proposal without considering the necessity of amending Article III, Section 2 of the Treaty of Transcaucasia. As the year has shown, there are terrorist elements within the Transcaucasia that mean to overturn their hard earned independence and as my government has made evident, we have been tracking the terrorist activity. Without a proper military alliance, we are unable to properly share the information we have accumulated with the Transcaucasian government. I will relay Russia's agreement to amend the treaty to the new government in Tbilisi immediately.
Rustavi, Georgia....
At the Foreign Ministry, preparations were made to host the Ambassador from Scythirus, Yirindan Kharzon. The Holy Empire had been one of the biggest supports of the current government. Chairman Mikhail Khalilov painfully aware that his position of power was weak. Sectionalism between the Georgians, Armenians, and Azerbaijani was still high and unless he could consolidate his power quickly, he would fall prey to all sort of political and personal attack against him. He knew he could assassinate some of his political opponents to even the playing field. However, he also knew to win the people he had to improve the situation in the Transcaucasus. He had an economic plan but it would take funding, funding he believed he could secure from the Holy Empire. That was Secretary Rustamov mission in the meeting, was to secure from the Scythirians funds that could help kick-start Transcaucasia's economy.
A naturally nervous man, Rustamov was not the most likely man to be considered for such a presigeous job as Foreign Secretary. However, Chairman Khalilov knew that he could influence Rustamov, he could control him and that Rustamov was not the kind of man that could betray someone like the chairman easily. Rubbing his hands together he was told that the Ambassador's plane would be landing soon and that the car was already at the airport to pick him up and escort him to the Foreign Ministry building. He stood a bit nervous near the entrance awaiting the Ambassador's arrival.
Yirindian Kharzon stepped into room after he was chauffeured to the ministry from the airport. An older, rail-thin man, his eyes nevertheless betrayed an inner fire of strength typical of his people and years of experience. He exchanged a formal handshake with Transcaucasian delegate with a firm and steady grip.
"It is my pleasure to finally have these talks," Kharzon said with a smile that made him resemble a desert viper. "Naturally, Russia is concerned about these discussions because of Article Three, Subsection Two of the treaty, so one of the things I will be proposing here is an amendment to that clause to ensure that our countries' mutual cooperation becomes perfectly legal."
A man in his early 40s, Rustamov was not a very impressive person to look at. He wore his thin hair in a comb over that slightly bounced when he shook his head yes or shook another's hand. Though not particularly fat, he was not particularly thin either and wore a bit of a belly. He was ethnically Georgian and had been a rather unsuccessful accountant before joining the Union party. His unsuccessful nature was not from being dimwitted for in fact Rustamov was quite intelligent, especially for a man who grew up in the country that afforded him little education options. Standing there in his tailored suit and cleaned shaven face, it was still hard to not see an unkempt man. Still, as unsuccessful as he'd been previously, joining the party was one of the best decisions (and boldest) he'd ever made. His rise through the ranks was almost overnight and when they'd won, he was made Foreign Secretary.
Though this appointment came partly from the fact that he was fiercely loyal to Chairman Khalilov, it also came from the fact that he had a calculating mind. He understood what Transcaucasia needed and he understood Khalilov's vision better than most. He was the perfect man to represent Khalilov in meetings such as this though he hardly represented as a symbol of the government's strength.
