The Кукушка (cuckoo in Russian) was a ship of smugglers which sailed between Porcu, Russia and the Norwegian fjords and brought products as diverse as cigarettes and hunting weapons.
That night it was sailing close to Bergen when a sailor saw a wooden boat which wouldn't resist longtime to the sea's winds and currents. The captain of the Кукушка decided to help those men who were unlucky enough to be on that boat, even if he risked to reveal himself as a smuggler.
The boat was approached and the men were taken inside the ship.

Captain Djourgaev, a Chechnian who had ended up in that ship after an adventurous life, approached those men; they were in horrible condition and absolutely needed to rest.
However Djourgaev wanted to know what had happened them and asked:"Who is the captain here ?"
A man, who was the one who looked the most tired of all stepped forward.
"Which ship are you from and what happened?"
"I am captain Verus from the San Nicola, a Porcuian ship" he replied.
Djourgaev had heard about that ship, it was a very sizeable merchant ship which normally sailed between Porcu and Murmanskaya. Djourgaev asked Verus to continue and tell him what happened.
And so Verus told him something that surprised and shocked him.

The San Nicola was sailing at few miles from the Scottish coast, the sea was calm but the mist reduced visibility significantly. That is when a warship, probably a destroyer, appeared out of nowhere and cut the path of the San Nicola. Verus had ordered his men to stop the ship, he thought that it was a British or an English ship which had stranded too far in the north. He didn't worry too much about it and thought that, in the worst case, the destroyer would stop the San Nicola to see if it transported products to an enemy country.
However when the ship was close enough he saw that its flag was a Marslavan one, something which was impossible since Marslava didn't have a harbour - and a navy - since years. In few minutes the destroyer was close enough to have the destroyer's crew jumping on the San Nicola, taking control of the ship and gathering all the crew on the ship's deck at gun's point. The men who seized the San Nicola - probably Marslavans - didn't bother to explain them what was happening: after having beaten up those who tried to resist, they took all the content of the cargo, put all the sailors on a small ship and blew up the good old San Nicola.

Djourgaev didn't believe what he was hearing: he got told that a navy from a country which is not supposed to have one was practicing piracy in a sea which hadn't seen any pirate since immemorable times. This didn't make sense, he thought, but Verus didn't sound like he was joking.
The captain of the sunk ship was not in position of making any joke.
What he was sure of is that he would report this to his boss in Bergen, so that he could take the appropriate measures for other smugglers. In the meantime he would reach the Norwegian coast and leave there the men from the San Nicola.
