Prague, close to Palais Wallerstein The fire hit the crowd and the innocent bystanders fled, leaving their deads and woundeds in the street. Clementis could avoy to share their sort thanks to the intervention of the Porcuians, who covered his retreat to an old palace in the other side of the street. From there Clementis organized the siege of the Russian embassy: his best men would take position on the buildings surrounding and towering the embassy and submit it to a costant and uninterrupted fire. The idea was inflicting the greatest possible damage to the Russians, so that they could finally learn that any interference in Marslava's affairs came at a heavy price. And the fire started, it grew in intensity as the embassy was targeted from every side; soon the fire of machineguns joined in and, then, also the mortars were put to use. The Ducal Guards, in the middle between the Spetsnaz and the rebels, found themselves in a very difficult position: they had to get out from there or they would suffer very heavy losses. And so the Ducal Guards used their smoke grenades to cover their run to a building occupied by the enemy. A short battle took place, as the Ducal Guards' grenades silenced a machinegun, the soldiers jumped inside, killed some enemies and forced the others to flee. In few minutes the building was occupied, and from its second floor, the Ducal Guards started shooting against the rebel shooters who were targeting the Russians. The pressure of the embassy so loosened a bit, but it was clear that the Ducal Guards would not hold indefinitely without any reinforcement: the enemy mortars had already started to target the building they occupied. The siege continued and was not going to end anytime soon.... Suburbs of Prague Posted Image The armoured columns had entered Prague's periphery, with its massive, grey buildings and its wide, empty boulevards. The majority of the rebels had left to fight in the battle that raged around the Russian embassy and only few shots were fired against the advancing army. The people were tired of the ongoing battle and contented themselves with looking at the advaning army from their windows. They thought it wiser to wait and see what would happen. If this army reached the center of Prague the rebellion would be put down quickly: how could a rebel force, as large and popular as it could be, be able to resist to the best army that a Grand Duke could field ? As the army approached Prague, it seemed that the rebels' punishment was closing in. Yet, the tanks stopped and the soldiers stood without moving. The voice had spread that Lord Slavnik, also known as Slavomir I had died of his wounds... |

The Embattled Russian Embassy.... The aids and other embassy workers flinched at every shot that seemed to hit the walls of the embassy. To their credit, almost all of the Russians paperwork that wasn't being taken with them had been destroyed in the embassy's furnace. Most of the furniture had been pushed against the doors and some of the windows, though the windows themselves were bullet proof. Count Panin could be found in his office, just on the top floor of the embassy. His curtains were closed and he was busy gathering the last of his files when Lt Colonel Cherenko rushed into the room. "We currently have the rebels on the defensive for the moment Count but it is doubtful we will be able to hold them much longer" he said, sounding out of breath. "The Ducal Guard is putting up a fair fight but unless reinforces come in soon, even they won't be much good for us." "It is doubtful anyone else is coming" the Count said plainly. "I received a call just a few moment ago informing me of Slavomir's death and Moscow doubts the monarchists can survive now. Before the phone was cut I was told our transports should be minutes from us now. Have your men secure the rooftops for our evacuation, we won't have time to have each of the transports land will simply have to have them fly up towards the roof ledges and get as many in as we can." "As your wish my lord" said Cherenko, "I'll have then men pull back and reinforce the roof and as soon as the helicopters are in sight we'll call down for the personnel." With that Lt Colonel Cherenko left the room and Count Panin continued packing. Outside the battle was not going well for the Russians who'd now lost three of their own, naturally at the cost of many more rebels. What disturbed Lt Colonel Cherenko the most was the reports he was getting from some of his men who swore they were spotting more heavily armored and geared personnel among the more rag-tag rebels in the crowd. No one had yet been able to spot one clearly enough to tag any sort of identification, but Cherenko had his suspicions. After all Russian intelligence had picked up chatter of possible Porcuian involvement and given the organization of the rebels the Russians certainly felt an outside hand was guiding them. Reorganizing his men, more Russians moved to the rooftops from the balconies, securing their surroundings by putting more pressure on the rebels on other rooftops. They took out several rebel snipers and other enemy riflemen before they spotted the Mi-24s. Posted Image Three had been dispatched to the embassy and as soon as it was in sight, two of the Mi-24s broke off from their formation and began hovering downward towards the rooftop. The third began making circles around the embassy itself, using its guns to lay suppression fire down against the rebels on the street. The attack did break up the large sea of rebels in the streets, but did nothing but galvanize their resolve to make the Russians pay. While many broke away from the embassy, others broke towards the embassy doors and began ramming them to break in. Though the furniture was serving as an effective barricade against the rebels, when they broke through the doors themselves it was only a matter of time before they would get through completely. Rushing to the rooftop the embassy personnel was halted at the doors by the Russian soldiers. Given the heavy fire the Mi-24s came down one at a time, though Count Panin had hoped they'd come down at the same time. When it came down the cargo door swung open and the Russian inside starting waving over the first group. Count Panin and most of his most senior staff were the first to rush over, with the Russians fitting as many as they could in the helicopter before the door was closed and it raced upward and out of gunfire range. Then the second Mi-24 came downwards and by this time, gunfire could be heard inside the embassy building itself. Frightened, the rest of the personnel began rushing out with no fear of being shot as they came out into the open on the rooftop. Rushing into the hull of the helicopter, many had to be pulled back as they'd already reached capacity and the chopper had to lift off. Doing so left several, including the Russian Spetsnaz, on the roof and now reliant on the last Mi-24 which was still circling the embassy. The second Mi-24 gave cover fire as the last helicopter came to the roof to land long enough to get the last of the Russians out. By this time what was left of the Spetsnaz had all pulled back to the roof and now were giving cover to the rest of the personnel from the rebels now trying to get on the roof. Luckily, given that the only roof access was a small doorway, the rebels had the difficulty of having to get through the doorway. When the helicopter was down the last of the personnel began rushing, with the Spetsnaz giving cover as they did so. Several were shot and killed before they made it to the helicopter, when the last alive made it to the chopper the Spetsnaz made their way and when the last had boarded the Mi-24began taking off. Given that the chopper was well over capacity, it was slow to move as it began lifting off from the roof. By now the rebels were on the rooftop and firing furiously in hopes of disability the bird. At the same time a group of rebels setup their shot and fired a mortar into the helicopter's direction. Watching from afar Count Panin had the unfortunate clear view of the last Mi-24 being hit and exploding in mid flight, the flaming wreckage coming down onto the nearby rooftops just beyond the embassy itself. The Russian Count simply watched in horror as his own flight and its only surviving twin Mi-24 flew away as the Russians left Prague in utter defeat. |

When it became clear that a full retreat from the embassy was in order for the Russians a short cheer was collectively shared by the SSR forces, and especially by the commanders. It had been an immensely risky decision to move openly and forcefully in defending Marslavan leadership of the Democratic Front. Thus far, it seemed the decision had been spot-on. There were still some tense moments, however, and the first came with the arrival of tanks and APCs to the edges of the capital city. Several SSR teams were scattered around the periphery and awaited further orders. Although the SSR commandos were ready and prepared to tackle the Ducal Guards, when the order came to remain quiet and not engage there was a general feeling of relief. The second tense moment came with the eruption of the third Mi-24 helicopter just after it had taken off from the roof of the Russian embassy. The initial concern was that an SSR commando had taken down the helicopter, instigating the Russian forces when there was no reason to. That said, a couple of opportunities presented themselves for the SSR forces to shoot down the Mi-24s as they crossed over Prague, but strict orders were obeyed. The Porcuians had made their statement. |

Suburbs of Prague The Slavnik clan gathered around the body of Lord Slavomir Slavnik and buried it with sorrow. Just when his ambitions were going to be realized and he had defeated the usurper, he had been wounded and killed. Like one thousand years before, a Lord Slavnik had started a war but had not been able to reap any profit from it. Viktor, Boguslav and Daria had this in their minds as they saluted their deceased older brother and asked themselves: what happens now ? Lord Slavnik had left no will and designed no heir, he didn't even order the war effort to be continued. Would any of the Slavniks continue his claim to the throne ? Would the war continue ? All these questions could be answered with a yes only if the Ducal Guard and general Zdeněk wanted to serve under the new claimant, and this was not entirely sure. Daria Slavnikova wanted to avenge her brother, but she knew that Marslava couldn't afford the war to continue and also that the Ducal Guard may not accept to continue. Viktor and Boguslav had not wanted this war in the first place and were not willing to devastate Prague in order to gain the throne. They also believed that Zdeněk would not serve any of them and said that it was better to negotiate than to be abandoned by their army before the peace is concluded. They thought that, now, who won the war didn't matter: the peace had to be won so that the Slavniks could continue to enjoy some power. This was the situation when General Zdeněk and his staff joined them to discuss what had to be done after Slavomir's death. The General began immediately with the most important topic of discussion: the future of the war. He said:" My officers report me that our vanguards have come out of their tanks and have started to fraternise with the locals. " He paused " The truth is that I cannot ask my me men to fight anymore. I'll let you take your conclusions..." Daria insurged against the general "You want to tell me that Slavomir dided for nothing ? That we should stop now that our goal is so near ?". She was interrupted by Viktor, who replied " The truth is that now that my brother is dead, the main cause of this war has been removed, I regret to be so unkind toward Slavomir, but it's true" He sighed and concluded by saying " we should immediately make a cease-fire and work out a peace agreement with the Democratic Front, it's the only way that I see to end this war with some decency." Everybody in that room knew he was right, even Daria, who was blinded by desire to avenge her brother, felt somewhere that the war couldn't be continued. " So " said Zdeněk " I will order the troops to halt and proclaim a cease-fire, the Marslavan Democratic Front will be contacted and we will see to end this" Prague City Centre Finally the proud citizens of Prague had freed themselves and the Russians had fled with their helicopters, leaving the embassy to the whims of the crowd. Those who penetrated the embassy found little of interest, while the medics who reached the rooftop didn't find any survivor in the remainings of the Russian helicopter. All of the passenger had died, a tragedy, but also a lesson for the Russians. Clementis rejoiced when he saw the flight of the Russians and his joy could only become bigger when he was told that Lord Slavnik had died. In Prague's suburbs, he was told, the lealist army had stopped and its soldiers had come out of their tanks to fraternise with the local population. No violence occurred there as fellow Marslavans acted as if there had been now civil war. Also in the city centre things were starting to calm down: the Ducal Guards stopped to shoot, the rebels laid down their weapons and the citizens came out on the streets. All of this meant that the enemy was not so willing to continue the fight and that the democratic Marslava for which Clementis fought was now at reach. For this he didn't refuse the loyalists' offer to negotiate, but he posed three conditions: Marslava should be a democratic constitutional state, the next Grand Duke should be elected by the people and the next elections should be supervised by the international community. |

Breaking News: Peace Arrives Following negotiations which have been sometimes tense the loyalist army and the Marslavan Democratic Front have reached a compromise which is to shape what Marslava will look like in the future. The two sides have agreed to a cease-fire and the creation of a national union government which is to govern Marslava for six months, until two elections will be held. The first will be a legislative election, which is to elect an assembly which will redact a new democratic constitution for Marslava, the second is going to be an election which is to fill nothing less than the ducal throne. While the first election will be open to candidates from any background, only aristocrats will be able to be candidates to the throne that had once been occupied by Vladislav II and his ancestors. National Union Government The National Union Government will now be the official government of Marslava. It is a representative government in the sense that it gives space to social movements and political parties that had been excluded before: the Liberals, the Social-Democrats and some progressive aristocrats have adhered to the government. Except the hardline conservatives, of the major groups only the communists have opted to stay outside and play the role of a democratic opposition. The government has the following composition: Prime Minister: Lord General Frantisek Zdeněk (loyalits/Ducal Guard) Speaker of the National Assembly: Vaclav Clementis (marslavan democratic front) Foreign Minister: Lord Ottokar Přemysl (noble council) Interior Minister: Klement Husak (marslavan democratic front) Economy Minister: Maria Klaus (social-democrats) Education Minister: Prof. Hermann Spitezky (social-democrats) Defence Minister: Lord General Gustav Sobcak (loyalists/Ducal Guard) Healthcare Minister: Martha Paroubek (liberals) These men and women will now be responsible for Marslava's reconstruction. Their first action has been to issue a general amnesty involving all the sides that took part to the civil war. Elections They will be held in six months, they are to elect a 500 members constitutional assembly tasked with drafting Marslava's new democratic constitution. Any adult citizen can vote and become a candidate for such an assembly, as an independent or as a member of a political party. The man tasked to head this effort and to bring Marslava a new constitution is Vaclav Clementis, the man who has lead the popular insurrection in Prague and forced the aristocracy to stop their wars. Another election is the one for the throne of the Grand Duke, more details will be divulged about it later on, including names and positions of the candidates. This will be the first time since years that Marslava lives under a democracy, it is hoped that this will prove to be stable and that a constitution will be written in the briefest of delays. While Russia might have lost the political war for the heart of Marslava, the Tsar was not ready to assume complete defeat. Republican sympathizers now controlled the government and politics of Marslava, of this the Tsar was willing to concede. However, while politics and government were now stabilizing they people of Marslava would still need industry, still need economy to begin the true reconstruction of the country. This is were the Tsar decided Russia would fight, for Russia was among Europe more stronger economies so it was only natural that it should offer assistance. Slavomir once promises full and unimpeded access to Marslava's markets and Tsar Alexei intended to take it. Controlling the industry and the markets would give Russia significant influence in Prague, influence enough to ensure the delicate balance between complete Republic and autocracy in the country. Lord General Frantisek Zdeněk, Prime Minister of Marslava Russian investment is and will always be welcomed in Marslava inasmuch as it is done in conformity with Marslavan legislation. My government is willing to open negotiations with the Russian Empire regarding further economic cooperation and will contact the Russian government in the briefest delays. The Porcuian statement is most welcome, as it is clear that Porcu's intentions are the best. My government would like to discuss the terms of closer economic and political relations between our two countries and the Porcuian government will soon hear from us. |
