So I know that CE lives in South America, but who else has experience with that region of the world? Recently I've been reading (in English) some of Borges' short fiction, and since much of it is set in Argentina or Uraquay, it occurred to me how little of my thought has really been given toward South America. Like many Americans, I think, my attention has rarely wandered south of Mexico. What would be nice places to visit?

I have never been, but my favorite author is Chilean Roberto Bolaņo, which I would recommend if you are interested in further study of Latin American literature. |

I'd love to some time. What places are good to visit? And how much can one get by on English and how much does one need to know Portuguese first? |

Depends on where you go...stick to the big tourist cities like Sao Paulo, Rio, Recife or Fortaleza you're not really going to be stuck if you don't speak Portuguese. Go off the beaten track and yeah, you will need Portuguese because they won't understand the slightest bit of English. In terms of culture...Olinda (10 miles from where I live is one big culture-fest) and I hear Salvador in Bahia is amazing. Rio...obviously. And Sao Paulo for more modern culture! The Amazon if you love nature is, clearly, not needed to be said haha! |

Regarding the Amazon rainforests, I recently read a very interesting article suggesting that they might actually be the result of human cultivation, basically a huge edible forest garden of sorts. Source: The Atlantic |

I hadn't seen that article, but I'm familiar with the author and his ideas. I've been meaning to read his books, but I haven't had the time yet so I appreciate the article link! Thanks! |

What an extremely interesting article! And one that I believe is probably correct. |
