Quitting my Job; As soon as I find another

Mirror, mirror on the wall, who's the lurkiest of them all?
My only New Years' resolution this year was "be happier." To that end, I am revamping and sending out my resume this weekend, and hopefully handing in my notice shortly thereafter.

My beef(s?) with the company, in no particular order:

- This master's program is bullshit. It's the main reason I signed on for the job, because the recruiter told me they were accredited with Michigan State University, and I'd be getting a Computer Science degree. Then they pulled the rug out from under me and told me I'd be getting a "Computing" degree from Marquette University, via distance learning. I take that degree anywhere outside of GE (Internally, people are familiar with the master's program, so they know how rigorous it is), and I'm going to get laughed out of the interview room. The first year and a half of classes are taught in seminars by people inside the company, who have NO idea what they're doing, and there's about 20 hours of homework per week that I have to do, since if I fail the "classes," I get fired.

- GE is as soul sucking to work for as you think/the work environment is also bullshit. I'm in a shoulder-high (On me, I'm 6'4") cube for 8 hours a day, one that's poorly lit and in a building with a worthless HVAC system. I spend 10 hours writing documentation for every 1 hour I get to develop code. That's not a Software Engineer, that's a technical writer with a side of programming. I understand that it's safety-critical software, since it says "GE Aviation" on the building, but seriously, hire a damn technical writer.

- I have nothing in common with the people I work with. I am a gamer. Video games, card games, tabletop RPGs and wargames, any of the above. Half the guys I work with are/were married before they graduated college (not necessarily a bad thing in and of itself) who don't think beyond doing their duty as good old West Michigan Christians and having a bunch of kids. Do not want.

So, fuck it. I've honed my SQL skills quite a bit in the last 8 months, at least, so maybe I'll apply for some DBA positions. Those guys make metric fuck-tons (The scientific term) of money.

Unfortunately, you have fallen into the corporate trap so many people in IS experience. Happened to me (Sears). Happened to my friend T.J. (Discover). Happened to way too many (read "Player Piano" by Vonnegutt. G.E. was his corporate model for the book, and you'll know just how far back this goes). G.E. is doing what it does because they have given Master's degrees to so many employess that imediately fly the coop - this is their way to try to get (force) some commitment after the degree is obtained. There are many, many other leaner and more interesting companies out there looking for someone with your skills, so start looking. G.E., like most corporate giants, will suck the life out of you. Good experience to have though, and good lesson to learn!
