I can't predict them. But tactical errors can decide wars.... |

They can, but 90% of the time, the most powerful force will win or force a draw, at minimum. I don't see the US as being any weaker than any other power, and I think the US may still be the strongest single power in the world, but I think it's a massive stretch to call any advantage the US might have as "hegemony". If the US were to go to war with a power with the capability of say, China, or Russia, or possibly even the EU, I couldn't see there being an outright total victory. Could we win? Maybe. Could we get conquered? Possible, but very doubtful. Would we be stronger for it, even in victory? Absolutely not. The state of the world today is one far different from the Cold War-esque, us vs. them mentality. This world is multipolar, with nations being both independent and inter-dependent on one another for survival. The US may still be dominant for now, but it will fade if we continue on this perpetually-deadlocked political sphere that pulls everything to the far ends of the spectrum on every issue (Democrat vs. Republican, socialism vs. laissez-faire, interventionist vs. isolationist, the list goes on and on...) As time goes by, it's going to keep getting more and more multi-polar. India and Brazil are going to both become extremely powerful in the next few decades, particularly Brazil. (India needs to figure out its overpopulation concerns, and may follow some of China's paths, although Brazil needs to do the same in its urban areas.) In the end, if there is a hypothetical war between two (or more) of the major powers of the world, everyone loses, even those who don't pick a side. This world is so interconnected that most nations can not stand on their own, and this definitely includes the United States. |

The only thing I will add to this argument is: let's say China, by some act of providence, did "conquer" the United States - they could never, ever afford to keep it. It would bankrupt them faster than you can say "huge land mass"! Just as we could never conquer and hold China or Russia - or Afghanistan for that matter. The times have changed and, as has been pointed out, the world is intertwined. As one of my CEO's said back in the '80's, "International commerce will be the glue that holds the world together." The only people that don't have to live by that law are countries trapped in the 15th century by their fanatical religious leaders; and trust me about West Asia, ya can't eat oil, so if the West isolated them, they would starve quickly. |
