So I got some blood drawn today for some tests, six tubes worth. Don't know how much that actually is. But honestly I don't really understand why people are afraid of needles or getting blood drawn. It literally just felt like a pin prick. I honestly kind of enjoyed it. My arm ached about ten minutes later, but oh well, I'm not very affected by pain given that I'm in pain constantly. But I think if I could give blood I would. I can't because of the whole "I lived in Germany in the 90s" thing. It's stupid. I bet they'd let me give blood in Germany. |

6 tubes is next to nothing. I get blood drawn at least once every other week at a minimum of 8 tubes a trip. The needle itself doesn't actually hurt if the nurse is good at what they're doing. It's when the needle moves in the vein or scratches along it when being pulled out or goes through the vein, etc, that it hurts terribly. It cuts up the inside of the vein and/or surrounding tissue and is just as fun as any other damaged, internal tissue, if on a smaller scale. I'm not allowed to give blood either. Which really sucks since all last year my chemistry teacher made a point to frequently announce the local Best Buy's weekly blood drive rewarding 20$ gift cards a visit. |

I used to HATE needles... Then I had brain surgery and the trillion IVs that came with it. I can now watch the needle go in no problem. |

They tend to miss my veins a lot.... x_x I think I have more problems with seeing the needle go in rather than the blood coming out, haha. So I can't look when I get blood drawn. |

Tattoos never bothered me. Other peoples blood doesn't bother me. Cuts and bruises on myself never bother me. But the second they take so much as one vial from me, I will pass out. |

I guess I should be glad I go to a military hospital. Seems like an actual doc drew my blood, and you could tell he does it all the time. I've heard the stories of nurses missing the vein and having to try again and what not. |

I don't look simply because I am not interested. I too cannot donate blood (gays are banned). |

Really? I guess that makes sense. It's not really about sexual preference but rather sexual practice. But in that case everybody, gay or straight, of that sexual practice should be banned. Really, by that logic, anyone that doesn't use condoms should be banned. But there's no way to tell except by the "honor" system. It would honestly make a lot more sense if they just tested people for diseases before allowing them to donate blood. Someone could have AIDS and not know it, and then before we know it a little kid has AIDS too. Testing for everything takes more time and is more expensive, but it would ensure more of the population could donate. The question is, would less donate because of the tests, and is this the reason why they are so discriminatory? |

It is just typical straight paranoia - "Oh, gay males spread AIDS. We can't have them contaminate our blood supply." Never mind that I haven't been involved in risky behavior since 1980, that doesn't matter; and never mind that druggies sharing hypos are perfectly welcome, and do donate to get a few bucks! Oh, and never mind that many "straight" married men have gay sex on the DL, often unprotected. It is just a silly rule. |

No they are not, and just as they lie on their form, so can you lie on yours. Also, Sed, give SOME credit. They check every bag of blood for disease. Every last one. /worked at blood bank Edited by Union, Nov 19 2011, 04:32 PM.

I gave blood a week and a half ago. The part where they prick your finger hurts far more than the actual donation. |

So, I got the lab results back, and it looks like I have a clean bill of health. The only thing wrong with me is a little high cholesterol, not high enough to prescribe anything. So the doctor told me to just start working out regularly again, and this will help lower the cholesterol and maybe get rid of the fatigue. After all, in previous semesters I was less fatigued, and I did work out regularly. But... I still feel really tired, I still feel in pain, I still have my chronic cough, I still have this overproduction of mucus. I still feel sick. I'll do all this and see how things improve by January. If things don't improve, I'll get another appointment. Hopefully they can find out what's wrong next time. |

Hmm. I feel pain. I have a chronic cough. I overproduce mucus. I feel sick. . . . wait, I smoke and I'm 60. Nevermind. |

That brings up a good point, though, NH. I have been perhaps overexposed to second-hand smoke over my lifetime. I didn't used to have this cough, and I didn't used to have all this mucus. Asthma or Bronchitis aren't going to show up in a blood test. And there are certainly treatments for them. |

Needles don't bother me either, but I'm disappointed that I can't give blood. Apparently my anti-depressants ruin the supply, but my mom's friend says that it should be in the water. :P I think the blood banks would benefit from my donations, minus the allergic reactions.
