So, if I complete the rest of my work this semester, which I really need to do, I should be set to graduate in a year. My VA benefits provide for me beyond that, so naturally I should continue into graduate school. I need to study for and take the GRE next semester, and apply for graduate programs either before, during, or immediately after the summer.

So far, however, the only suitable graduate program I've found is one at OU (Oklahoma, not Ohio), for Modern Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics. At that, the only Master's programs they have in this department are French, German, and Spanish. I would have to go with German, which I only will have done the beginning classes for, and they don't have a PhD program for it. So OU is actually kind of out. I don't even know if I could get in, and even if I wanted to, it would be a last resort.

I also looked at ISU (Idaho), and they have nothing for me. I also looked at universities in San Antonio, and they have nothing for me. So those are all my top picks gone right there.

So I have no idea where to even look. I'm going to have to start just looking at random universities. I may just have to go to Russia after I graduate from Cameron. Ideally, I will be near fluent in Russian in a year (by graduation). So I am looking for graduate programs in Russian studies (which includes language, culture, and literature), or in Slavic studies (I will have studied at least Polish and Czech by the time I graduate Cameron).

If you guys have any idea of universities with excellent language programs, I would most appreciate being pushed in the right direction.

But if I cannot find a good program, I will likely need to go to Russia and teach English, which is not all that bad, but not all that great either.

Perhaps I will actually be free to pursue my dreams in Ireland. Or perhaps I will be forced to do something similar. In any case, I need to prepare and do all the needed research over the next semester to ensure my continued prosperity.

For the GRE, people will likely ask you to study vocabulary and whatnot. Considering how unnatural note cards are when it comes to studying your own native language just do your best to incorporate whatever words you don't already know into your everyday speech. That way you have an entire segment of studying done in your daily routine.

If you go to Russia watch out for TB and judo-chopping politicians. :D

IMO, the best way to learn vocabulary is to read a lot and look up the words you do not know and can't infer from context.

I'm not really worried the vocabulary, though that does seem like it will be the most intensive part of the GRE study.

But it really is starting to look like I may actually really have to leave the country for a real future. Didn't think it would actually turn out this way. I thought I'd be leaving because I wanted to, not because I had to.

Telo, that bug.gif thing is literally annoying.

Anyway, yeah, just never do index cards. Rote memorization of your own language is a painful and embarrassing path, and one no one should admit to.

Sorry, I'm being a bitter, tired, cynical person right now. Luckily I'm having a drink with my boss in an hour or so.

Speaking of grad school, how does one look for funding if he is not sure he will get it from the university? This is hypothetical.

Well, the best source of funding is an assistantship (I got one, so I suspect anyone can qualify). You probably have to either teach one or two labs or tutor in order to get it, but it is much easier to get than other money.

Ah, well thanks. I'll be sure to look into it, probably even apply there.

I'm thinking I'll apply to the University of Arizona (not ASU) as well. It's in Tucson, which is quite a ways south of Phoenix, but that's still close enough to family. I hate the weather there, though. I'd prefer something further north, and Illinois is definitely winning in the "further north" department. I'd expect it's not anymore expensive either.

That said, what is at the top of my list is the European University in St. Petersburg. If I could get in and pay for it, I'd have a Master's Degree in one year from a European university in Russia. Very easy to see why this is preferable, but perhaps not practical. I just need to make sure to do my best from here on out, and try to get a Russian program over next summer. I need to get fluent by the end of 2012.

Thank you! If you are interested, here is the non-hypothetical situation: This past year, I was admitted to Cornell's Ph.D. program in Economics. At the time, I was not sure if I wanted to go, or to pursue my career as an attorney. Also, I was not offered funding by the university. I was graciously allowed to defer my admission one year, so in a few months I can ask them to reactivate my application to be considered for financial aid alongside this season's applications. I'm currently leaning toward going if I get funding, so I am curious about the options. But since I didn't get offered funding for this year, I can't really assume I'll get offered funding for next year.

Sed, I've posted here since the thread is titled "Graduate School," but it occurred to me that I might be threadjacking your thread. Please let me know if you'd prefer that I seperate my conversation.

Meh, I already figured out a good source. Threadjack all you want. Really, this thread should be used by anyone relating to things of the graduate nature.

I finished ET "A" School, so now I sit around on AT (Awaiting Transfer) hold, also I get my E-4 soon....

In one year I went from E-1 to E-4, that's gotta be some kind of record.
