From Far Away; Mitaxia Opening Official Negotiations with Aghaba

Aghaba was an extremely foreign land for an individual from the Progressive Federation of Mitaxia, but it was not the cultural differences that had anything to do with the concern that was felt by individuals from that country. Mitaxians were ethnically diverse anyways, in a sense, since it was a nation made up of various indigenous tribes of the Americas and Pacific Islands. They would have no difficulty opening relations with an Islamic power. However, it seemed that the Federal Republic of Aghaba was a nation without much of a religion for many of the individuals, but Chief Running Cloud had made little case of this as of yet. He had no reason to create an international incident out of popular opinion.

Landing in Al-Abad aboard his Fokker transport, he found it was relatively ironic that a European design was being used by his own American nation to fly to one in the Middle East. That being said, his arrival was meant to be optimistic. Maybe things would not go off so poorly. After all, they knew just as little about Mitaxia as anyone in Mitaxia knew about their own state, so there should not have been too great of a problem.

As he exited the platform from his own aircraft, Running Cloud did his best to keep up a positive attitude, despite the fact that international travel away from his wife and children always made him feel a bit distant. He wore a beaded band around his head that held his extremely long black hair out of his eyes. That hair ran down to his feet, though another band around the end held the rest of it at the bottom. The knitting of the woven poncho he wore was incredibly complex; indeed, it actually told a story to those who were able to interpret the patterns.

Smiling as he stepped off the plane, he started to consider the list of foreign policy goals here. There were those in the Ghost Dance, the indigenous state religion of his country that wanted to establish a ministry here. There were also those who wanted to establish an international broadcaster here, and those who wanted to find an import market for automobiles. Aghaba, after all, was an automotive manufacturing nation and Mitaxia could very well import vehicles. Likewise, there were those that wanted to establish export markets here.

There was quite a bit on his plate, and whomever he was going to deal with was sure to get an earful from an individual who could show a full range of emotions. Indeed, the stereotypes of the 'stoic Indian' were about the furthest from the truth for those that had to deal with Chief Running Cloud.

Eagerly anticipating this historic moment - the arrival of the first American leader in Aghaba - Marshal Sevastian Baba poured over the wealth of information he had indulged in for the past week. The Marshal considered himself a polymath, and among his many fields was anthropology. He had dedicated the majority of his time in the past seven days to acquiring as much knowledge as he could about the people of Mitaxia in the hope that the upcoming diplomatic visit by Chief Running Cloud would go over flawlessly. The Aghaban media had questioned the leaderships pursuit of relations with Mitaxia, calling it "out of the ordinary" and "unrelated to Aghaban interests." Indeed, the Marshal was aware that his countrymen saw this as a most odd relationship. The Natives of Mitaxia were culturally vastly different, with no obvious common interests.

Eliminating negative thoughts, Marshal Baba stood on the tarmac watching Chief Running Cloud exit his transport and approach him. Cameras flashed and recorded the event, and the Aghaban Honor Guard held their rifles tightly as the Mitaxian leader made his way down the elegant carpet.

"Welcome to Aghaba, Chief Running Cloud of Mitaxia," the Aghaban leader said as warmly as his aging, impassive face would allow. He extended his hand hesitantly, realizing that he did not know if that was the proper way to greet his foreign guest. Chief Running Cloud returned the handshake with a stronger grip than any other world leader Marshal Baba had encountered. A good start.

In his mind, Marshal Baba pictured being back at the Seat of Power, in a comfortable, closed-door discussion with his American guest, hoping to achieve some sort of mutually beneficial agreement between their respective nations. But that was to be determined...

Trying to ignore the political ramifications that their meeting had on their own respective nations, Running Cloud once more again smiled and followed the other. "I trust that you will not hold it against me if I break some sort of political taboo right away. Naturally, I am not familiar with your cultural and I mean no disrespect, as I am sure that you understand. Still, I am deeply glad that you would invite me here and I hope that such sad incidents will not have to occur."

He exhaled and smiled, "Would you rather us get to business quickly, or would you think it best for us to enjoy a bit of time getting used to the situation?" He sighed, fearing that soon this could turn into a media circus. Therefore, he was doing his best to choose his words carefully so as not to do so.

Looking up with a bit of a grin, he shook his long hair out of an itchy spot for a moment and sighed again. "I apologize, but there was a bit of concerned as our countries both deal in Information Technology, but I am wondering if the sectors were quite different. You have to understand that those who live in a particular area of my nation enjoy employment by Mitaxia Telephone and Telegraph, which is well known for manufacturing legacy computer components as well as providing the titular telecommunications services. There is no particularly large market for things like punched cards in today's world, but a small number of computers around the world continue to rely on a steady stream of components like that. Is there any fear that industries within this nation shall be threatened by new interaction with the Progressive Federation of Mitaxia?"

Speaking in that fashion, Chief Running Cloud felt that it would appear that he were taking the concerns of both of their nations into the fold immediately and therefore not be questioned. He was, however, quite right. People in the municipality in Hokule'a, or Star of Gladness as it could be written, had a rather interesting life. Surfing, of course, celebrated the town's Pacific heritage, as did its name and the Iowa class vessel that shared that name. That aforementioned vessel, as well as others, docked in the coastline along with naval aviators that enjoyed the facility there. Naturally, a small business community had grown up around the military facilities to serve their personnel. It had become a part of their culture, and even school children in the area had grown to look up to the aforementioned pilots and sailors.

As well as this, the aforementioned MT&T ran a plant that custom manufactured components for older computer systems on contract work. It was an idyllic setting, at least for Mitaxia's culture, and therefore Chief Running Cloud had no wish to upset that image back home. Nevertheless, he also had no wish to upset anything similar in this foreign country. That would be equally as disastrous.

"Perhaps the first thing we should do is establish a formal and lasting peace such that our countries are never considered to be in conflict with one another." He thought this was a particularly important thing to get out of the way, especially considering the religious differences between them.
