The Old Republic

The monsters didn't bother me. I was having too much fun being a Jedi Knight.

The game's pretty awesome. I don't play subscription games, but I'm strongly considering this one. Not sure yet though. But it is a lot of fun... and its Star Wars.

I mean, I have a Skyrim game I'm enjoying, but I can barely bring myself to pick that up because the Old Republic is so much fun.

I felt addicted to the Old Republic the first weekend I played then. Then I couldn't play it.

This weekend, I don't really want to throw off my sleep cycle so I haven't gotten to play it much. My roommate said I can start playing it at 3 tomorrow though, so I'll get a lot in tomorrow.

Odd thing is, Bioware didn't tell me an end time for the test, and I know they gave me a different starting time than other people I know. I assume Sunday at 11:59 PM CST it will end like last time, but who knows.

I intend on playing an IA and a Trooper upon release, but because my friend is doing Bounty Hunter with me, I've been testing that this weekend--and it's quite addicting.

So far, TOR has immense potential, but various technical flaws (it is a beta stress test, after all). Lag has ranged from decent to unacceptable, and I've had to turn down almost all graphics options for a serviceable framerate. Combat is smooth, but can be cumbersome at times (though I think this is largely due to the aforementioned lag issues). Voiceovers are excellent (though some conversations are unnecessarily verbose), and the companion has a nice ass. All in all, it looks pretty good to me.

I've been able to play a bit of each class, and so far this is how interesting they are to me in order:

Sith Inquisitor
Bounty Hunter
Imperial Agent
Sith Warrior
Jedi Knight
Jedi Consular
Trooper
Smuggler

I am biased towards the Sith in no way. I'm actually biased toward the Jedi. But the fact of the matter is, the initial plots are just better for the Empire. Now, I have played the Jedi Knight all the way to Taris, and the plot gets more interesting. But still, it barely passes up the Sith Inquisitor's initial plotline.

Ironically, as far as play style goes, I actually prefer the ranged classes since you can just shoot people. You don't have to go all the way over to them and they die a lot faster, which doesn't make sense. You'd think a lightsaber would kill much more quickly.

Despite these things, I will still be playing a Jedi Knight at launch, then a Sith Warrior or a Bounty Hunter.

So, did the beta not end for others? Bioware never said a specific end time.

I just assumed it would end yesterday and uninstalled the beta client. I got a retrospective survey from Bioware this morning, so I assumed that that meant the beta was done.

I got the email for the survey last night while playing, but yeah, holy crap, I just launched the game and I'm in the game world right now.

Seriously, can anyone verify the test end for me? I'm not getting answers for it anywhere.

I'm pretty sure I'm not supposed to be a permanent tester, since it still just says "Beta Testing Weekend" and "IN PROGRESS" on the website for me.

Not that I'm complaining. I'm just trying to see if the test ended for anyone. If it did for almost everyone, I guess I'm a permanent tester?

If I ever get my desktop back, I'll let you know if it still works for me. Haven't gotten an email yet.

The server just shut down. And the website says test complete. Looks like this beta test was Friday morning to Monday night.

Just finished up with my beta test. Though I'm going to be IA main with Trooper alt on release, I decided to test Bounty Hunter since my buddy is interested in it. I can definitely, definitely recommend both the game as a whole and the Bounty Hunter class (which is voiced by the same guy who was Garrett in the "Thief" games--for those of you cool enough to have played these, you know how badass that is).

I'll post more details later on. Any questions, go ahead and ask.

Assuming my gaming computer is repaired successfully (which it likely will be), I will be pre-ordering the game soon. Has anyone here already pre-ordered the game? I know some of you have, but I'm trying to figure out if pre-ordering from one retailer or service over another provides any additional benefit, aside from early game access and a special in-game stone.

Also, I'll likely just be getting the standard edition, but has anyone seen any reason to get the Digital Deluxe or Collector's editions? The prices for these are about $60, $80 and $150 respectively, on top of the monthly fee to play the game after the first month of purchase(which I believe is $15?)

Ahem.

http://buy.swtor.com/us/

This lists everything you get with the different editions. I preordered the Collector's Edition from Gamestop. I get all of the physical glory in the box, plus all of those in game benefits. The big one is the Collector's Edition store which only people who bought it get it. Preordering does not get you the special store. I've already got mine paid down to $50 left.

That's tempting, but I also have to begin paying off my student loans this month. Might still look into it, though.

That list helps me on the specific editions, but is anyone aware of any specific extras that any of the retailers are giving out that the others aren't, or are all the benefits the same no matter where I buy the game from?

look up "star wars old republic preorder bonus" on google. If you don't see any retailer specific boni on the first page of results, you can likely conclude that there aren't any.

To be honest, the fact that Bioware doesn't mention any on that editions page probably means there aren't any.

Nothing specific comes up, so I'm assuming it's all the same. Does anyone have any recommendation whether I should buy a hard copy or a digital one, or where I should buy it as far as a good place to get it?

If you're not getting the Collector's Edition, then just buy it from Origin digitally.

And Lans, it would seriously piss me off if they were doing the whole extras from specific retailers thing. They aren't doing it with TOR.

Early Access!!!!

Woot! It appears to be free until the official release, too.

Now to find out if ignoring all news on the game to avoid spoilers was a good idea...

Pre-ordered. Downloading now.

For whatever reason, I had to create a whole new user name for Origin, since it couldn't link Lansdallius or Aelius to my SWTOR game.

Origin user name is "Ael_Lansdallius".

Yeah, I got early access yesterday too. But I have neither the computer nor the time to play it. I'm actually going to go ahead and let my roommate play it. He hasn't decided if he actually wants to commit to getting the game yet.

You get 30 free days of game time from launch.

College apps... I don't need to go to college right? I can just play this forever? That would be nice.

U of Michigan, Carnegie Mellon, U of Il at Urbana-Champaign, Stevens Institute of Tech, RIT, and UPenn. There's a few others, but that's a decently varied list. I really wanted to try for Berkeley, but I didn't notice that their Regular Decision is the same time as Early Decision for the rest of the world, so I missed it.
