Alcohol and scantily clad women. This is my kind of holiday. Though not this year's Halloween, particularly.

I had an awesome weekend. On Friday a potluck and dance party at a local organic farm. I've still got blisters on my toes from dancing. Then on Saturday, during the October snowpocalypse, a sweet party at yet another local farm. And then yesterday I went to a third party, climbed a 20 foot tall stripper pole, watched some trippy-ass visualizations projected on the walls of a dome, chilled with people spinning fire and LED poy, and danced to a mix of tribal, hip-hop, dubstep, and electronic music. And last night I had a very interesting conversation with someone whose thesis is exploring how the human mind/body/soul works, incorporating insights from parapsychology, genetics, and quantum physics. I had trouble following her at least a quarter of the time, but it was terribly fascinating.

Wat?

Parapsychology is not to be taken seriously, and though it may be interesting to think about the psychical capabilities of man the hobby cannot provide genuine scientific insights. Sorry if I disappoint.

I was not stoned at the time of that conversation, actually.

As far as parapsychology goes, or anything else for that matter, I'm not going to take anybody's word for it, but will instead formulate my own opinion based on my own examination of the evidence.

What is to be taken seriously, Porcu, and why?

Regarding the stripper pole... it's very sturdy.

Though I think the first part of your response was only directed at NH, I just want to make clear that I was not commenting on your evening, generally, or on the various festivities you participated in, specifically. I was only commenting on the field, generously defined, of parapsychology.

I think its notable of you to not declare an opinion on a matter until you have taken some time and effort to examine the available evidence. I'd be happy to assist you in this endeavor if you desire.

Now, as to your question regarding what is supposed to be taken seriously, I'm afraid that no matter how I answer the question a general debate on semantics will be the end result. What did I mean by "seriously", perhaps? With parapsychology, and generally speaking of psychic abilities and paranormal activities, the evidence that does exist is often inconclusive and contradictory - if not flat out nonexistent. As a simple example, the reliance by parapsychologists on meta-analytic investigations is particularly problematic. Assertions of extraordinary and rare capabilities requires extraordinary evidence, or at least a solid body of work supporting such claims. This is not the case with the parapsychological phenomenon of "communication anomaly", or psi. It is this assertion, and other such psychic phenomenon, which I say should not be taken seriously.

Wasn't sure if this went here or the Alcohol thread, but I'm sitting at home by myself, watching Conan and Monday Night Football and drinking a mix of Wild Turkey 101 and Pepsi Throwback, while browsing the forums. Am I failing at Halloween? (Yes, I'm somewhat drunk at this time.)

If you're in college, I feel like your success or failure at Halloween was decided before Halloween proper ever began. Halloween is a lifestyle that lasts at least a long weekend. If yours was anything like mine, Monday was a well-deserved day of rest, because you're all Halloween'd out. I did go out, but I also went to a bar with my roommate and watched the entire Chiefs-Cardinals game. Not a bad game for a Monday night. Days of rest are relative, I suppose.

Taken as a whole, I guess my Halloween was pretty shitty, but things aren't taken as a whole, really. I found something that makes me happy and I intend to hold onto it for as long as possible.

I've graduated from college, but I haven't been able to find a real job yet, so I had to work all weekend. Damned retail.

I did go to one Halloween party after work Saturday night, but when you get off work at 10 pm and have to be back at 11 am the next morning, the amount of debauchery you can perform is limited.

You know while Halloween has its traditions steeped in older traditions such as (but not exclusively in) Samhain, Halloween as we have today is entirely an American-made holiday.

Irish-American made. The Irish brought it, and the Irish still celebrate it. Granted, America of course commercialized it to the highest degree possible as it does with every major holiday.
