The Lambda League, like all other societies in the world, was changing. It was inevitable; nations without a central government are naturally disposed to have their power vacuum filled; in Japan it was the Samurai, in Europe it was the Feudal Lords, and in the Lambda League pirate captains carved out their own little fiefdoms. Average citizens were totally unaffected by this new twist since a pirate captain’s wealth came from abroad, and Pirate King Fullarton was getting old – too old to keep his captains in line and too frightened to oppose them. He just hoped they would let him enjoy his final days in peace. Of course, as was the case with the Samurai and the Feudal Lords, the captains started to get fat and comfortable. No longer were they commanding their sea raids and looting sprees; instead they stayed home in their comfortable environs while their loyal subjects performed their dirty work. They were becoming administrators and governors wielding their might and wealth from afar. One such minor captain was called Captain Lucius. No one was quite sure of Lucius’ origins – quite honestly, no one really cared. He showed up one day in the Litke port with a small poorly-manned fleet and immediately began shopping for crewmen. He then based a fairly active fleet that always seemed to return unscathed from battle yet loaded to the brim with treasure of all kind. Those that concerned themselves in gossip (and in any port city, there are always gossips) speculated either this man Lucius was the best commander ever, or the Devil incarnate. The gossips would quiz the crew only to be shoved away harshly and one extreme fool had the audacity to approach the captain himself and grab his arm. Instantly he fell to the ground dead as Lucius’ bodyguards displayed how exceptional their training had been. After a time of being an active commander of his fleet and building up a good-sized fortune Captain Lucius took to sea less frequently, modeling himself more like the other captains. He was enjoying the good life. Regardless, his seaside home was the most heavily protected of any captain’s estate. Thick walls covered the land sides and guard posts that were always manned by bodyguards. The sea side was rumored to be heavily mined, and bodyguards patrolled the beach day and night. It might be important to mention something about Lucius’ bodyguards. They were an all-woman contingent apparently trained at some far-away academy. They were skilled with all modern weapons, but were also trained in hand-to-hand combat, and each knew a special martial art. They dressed in sharp pseudo-military uniforms that were comfortable, flexible and efficient. They never let Captain Lucius out of their sight. No one knew what Lucius feared, but no one wanted to feel the wrath of a bodyguard’s anger either. They were killing machines. |
