ACON, Aghaba's premier news network recently aired a report detailing the increasing number of discriminatory attacks against immigrants from the neighboring nation of Talibastain. Primarily concentrated in the north, such incidents have included gang beatings, refusals of service and vandalism of homes of Talibastaini immigrants. Police and local government officials have been quiet on the matter, refusing to give any official statements on the matter. Many immigrants have complained about law enforcement turning a blind eye to these attacks. In one case, police officers stood and watched as townspeople set fire to a makeshift mosque constructed in a predominantly Talibastaini neighborhood.
Such incidents are not unheard of in Aghaba, where the Christian minority has been scrutinized and attacked by the overwhelmingly secular population for many years. In a poll released by ACON, 54% of Aghabans say they are indifferent to rising number of hate crimes, 19% endorsed such actions, and 27% believed that the government should crack down on "extremist behavior".

OOC: Messed up the poll choices

"Work is the curse of the drinking classes."

The Republic of Porcu finds these attacks as reprehensible as the increasing trend is worrying. Stockholm urges the Aghaban government to take action to protect these individuals, for it would be terrible for such discrimination and terror to be, at a minimum, condoned, or even promoted in secret.

In his weekly address to the nation, Aghaban leader Marshal Sevastian Baba briefly touched upon the supposed wave of discrimination:

"We have not seen or heard enough evidence proving that there is a problem with violent attacks against immigrants. The media is known for reporting one thing while the situation is in reality much different. In truth, Aghaba, a proudly secular state, has always been tolerant of individuals of all ethnicities and backgrounds. If you are a guest within our borders, the Aghaban Authority reminds you to report any acts of racial or ethnic discrimination to local law enforcement."

When reached for comment by ACON, Prime Minister Hussein's office refused to return communication. However, Interior Minister Alexander Tupolev had this to say in a press conference:

"The notion that Aghaba has a problem with bigotry is ludicrous. Reports that any such behavior is endorsed by the authorities is simply insane. Aghaba has suffered from cowardly acts of violence committed by extremist groups in the past, we all remember. Such groups have been destroyed from the source to the dismay of many in the international community, but we do things differently here. If there is ever a problem with violence against citizens or immigrants inside our borders, the Aghaban Authority can be trusted to deal with it."

Referencing what many considered to be brutal acts of suppression against religious institutions in Aghaba by security and intelligence agencies, the Interior Minister had made it clear that the government does not acknowledge this issue.
