MIDTERM ELECTIONS ARE HERE, POLLING SUGGESTS SUDDEN AND DEEP POLARIZATION OF VOTERS

Valdemarsvik, Porcu Proper - Certainly filled with its fair share of captivating news headlines, the first half of Ms. Gularis' first term as President has closed and now the voters head to the ballot boxes once again to give their verdict on Parliament's effort, not only her performance individually.

Utilizing her skill and charm abroad, and her party's firm hold on the Governing coalition in Parliament, Ms. Gularis toured many a nation and forged new ties while seemingly solidifying old ones. Mostly a resounding success, Ms. Gularis' only deduction as far as foreign affairs are concerned - although, truth be told it is a sickening blemish - is the continued war in Tanganorium. Conversely, Ms. Gularis demonstrated her absolute commitment to navigating difficult waters for an agreeable, peaceful, and respectful conclusion to the Galveston crisis by meeting with other diplomatic leaders in Atlanta. Even under fire, Ms. Gularis pressed on and won considerable support from voters back here in Porcu.

Domestically, things have been much more fluid, unpredictable, and up-tempo. Recently, here in Valdemarsvik, the Popular Democratic Front had its annual party congress and, surprisingly, Publius Manus Yurus was not reelected as Party Chairman. Heavy discontent among long-time party members and paying contributors unseated Mr. Yurus, the former Chairman being described once as a "doormat" and an "enabler of pro-corporate factions and ideology". Under Mr. Yurus' leadership, the Popular Democratic Front closely and openly aligned itself with the more centrist Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats, of whom Ms. Gularis is a member. Now, the PDF has shifted drastically left and new Party Chairwoman Adolpha Etanus Pinnes is hoping for a strong show in the election.

Also very much set again Ms. Gularis, though from a much earlier time, is Mr. Cea and the Republican Front. Despite their strong showing last election cycle, capturing a party record of 193 seats in Parliament, the RF has had little to say about policy decision-making and implementation. As leader of the Opposition within Parliament, Mr. Cea tried regularly to block legislation originating from the Governing coalition and tried to get passing approval for his own body of legislative work - to no avail. A party mantra within the RF is "Soon", in the sense that with continued success the party will soon be in a position to control Parliament. Substantially, the party's platform has modified little since last election cycle, but a renewed optimism is palpable among supporters.

Curiously, the Greens have wilted as a major political party, with registered and paying members decreasing steadily month after month. Many analysts believe that this can be explained by the fact that the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats has taken up many parts of the traditional 'green' platform and, through better organization and funding, been able to steal voters and supporters from the Greens. Ms. Gularis, in particular, has often made the environmental accomplishments of her administration very salient, and the PASD has ridden on her coattails.

Since the last couple of years of President Viriminus' administration, the centre-right Liberal and Democratic Reformist Bloc has lost steam, most importantly through a loss of funding. Reports released after their annual party congress show a dramatic decline of 33,6% in their fundraising and a general sense of complacency and ineptitude amongst party officials and large swaths of the party membership. "We just haven't managed to capture the public's desire for positive change." said Party Chairman Decimus Marius Quintianus. "We used to command a sense of hope; that Porcu will, with effort and determination, continue to excel like no other nation in all the fields of life. We hope to change that this election."

Below, a culmination from various interviews, speeches, and telecasts, is a short description of each party's major policy goals for voters to consider:

Liberal and Democratic Reformist Bloc - Lessen tax burden on small businesses and corporations to promote economic growth and innovation; seek more regional support for a responsible end to the War in Tanganorium; provide continued financial assistance to poor and economically stunted areas of the world; push for elimination of 'corporate welfare'; continue cooperative economic and diplomatic engagements with current international partners and new partners as well

Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats - Continue gradual implementation of increased income tax rate; finalize legislation to close tax loopholes, especially those exploited by corporations; continue to engage world leaders in a peaceful and constructive way to best promote cooperation; increase funding to urban development, especially in areas of urban farming, sustainability, and lower and more effective energy usage; push for increase in funding for Porcu's national healthcare system, overseen by the Ministry of Health, Labour, and Welfare

The Greens - Continue to push for funding to promote clean, alternative fuel sources and 'green' city development; push for higher fuel emission standards for all vehicles, but especially semi-trucks, trains, and aeroplanes

Republican Front - Continue push for national ID system, preferably DNA-based data system; push for reversal of current Self-Defense Forces downsizing, and for general increased defense funding; push for lower and, generally, flatter income tax rate; push for diplomatic and economic engagement with such nations as the Union of the Pyrenees, the Council of Moffs, and the United States of America (Goreprime)

Popular Democratic Front - Push for 90% income tax rate for wealthiest 2% of Porcuians; push for elimination of 'corporate welfare'; push for electoral reform to better reflect local dynamics; push for funding to create initiatives geared at raising the standard of living amongst the poorest of Porcuians
