There's no real creativity or freedom in the job, and it just doesn't pay enough to be worth dealing with the bullshit.
You've just described every job I've ever had and ever will have. And I was a professional musician for a stint.

Welcome. To. Real Life.

you need to position your shop as a strange, Blade Runner-esque neighborhood gathering place rather than a pure tea shop per se.
Best advice in thread.

As for a theme... Steampunk tea house. That is all.
Ok, I stand corrected. This is the best advice in the thread.

I say go Post-Apocalyptic instead.
Why not both? Also, what TC said.
Oh, come on! You guys are killing me! Best advice in thread... so far.

Fuck it. Opening a candy shop. E can provide the candy. I'll operate out of a van.
Well, okay, but only if the van is steam-powered, armored (to protect against zombies,) and Gay.
Just hire a hot Gay driver for the van, oh and might want to make sure it doesn't seem outwardly creepy...might be bad for business.
I was hoping to really ooze creepiness.

You know, just exude it all over the place.

Let it really seep into things.
GAY!

Very true, I think the van+candy=creepy and really the driver does little to alter the equation.

If the drivers knees are flexin' and his arms are t-rexin' then that certainly ups the creep factor. Especially if he's smiling.

That's the only motivation for anyone to get a job, if you really think about it. We go to college and get a real job so we can make more money to go buy higher-quality cigars and alcohol.

I agree. My recent job has bumped me up from craft beer and Cuban cigars to scotch whiskey and cigarettes composed of rolled panda fur.

It's a whole new tax bracket.

My first paid column as a writer. Granted, only got $50, but it's a 650-word column and two game reviews, every two weeks. $100 a month isn't bad extra money, plus it's easy. I'm that much closer to living out my dream of playing video games for a living. :P

Honestly, Lans, I think this is the way you'll be able to advance your career. Your main job is crap, but you can't help that right now. Sooner or later, the magazine will promote/give you more work, or someone will notice you. It's a simple matter of probability. The more of those columns you write, the more exposure you get, and the longer you work for a given company, the more likely you will receive a promotion. Keep it up.

As much as I actually enjoy the job writing for that magazine, it's hardly sufficient to make a living on. I'm still leaning towards moving out of Oklahoma at the end of the year if I can't find any other work here by then. So, I'm calling on you forum people to nominate places for me to go. Places where I can easily get a stable writing job are the most desirable options, but I will also consider places whee I can easily get a job that has dignity (no big-box retail, pay befitting a college grad) coupled with a reasonable cost of living and people who aren't assholes.

Make your cases, gentlemen. :P

If you can find a job, I like Michigan well enough. Swimming in the summer, snowboarding in the winter. Eez good times. Have you looked much at purely-online gigs? Easy to work remotely.

Sounds like a nice enough place, aside from Detroit. Again, though, I need to be able to get a good job. If there isn't a job there for me, then I won't be going in that direction.

As for online gigs: I've looked here and there, but I don't think purely freelance is going to be sufficient to make money starting out. Definitely something to look into as side income, similar to what I'm doing now, but until I become established enough that people will pay me as such, I need a main line of income.

That's awesome!

Also, I'd also recommend Michigan over Ohio if you are looking to live in the country at all. Very scenic. The lakes are awesome in the summer. Snow provides for plenty of recreation in the winter...

Of course, I love Cleveland. Underrated, low-priced mid-sized city with as many things to do as you'd find in larger/pricier cities..

Cheltenham, where our UK office is located. How far away is it from London?

Quite far, I would say it's about 2-3 hours by train, maybe more by car (not too sure, but I know it's not close). It's very close to the border with Wales. It's a nice, quite rich town anyway. Good restaurants and I hear the nightlife is good. Not forgetting the racecourse.

So about here to Chicago, then. Damn. There were three weeks we could have traveled, I was hoping it would end up being the week before Thanksgiving so I could take 3 days off and get a week in the UK. ;)
