Decentralized social networking software: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diaspora_(software) Like Facebook but slightly less evil. |

Okay, I'll bite. How is Facebook evil, aside from sucking up a ludicrous amount of time on a near hourly basis? I did read the Wikipedia article. On this Diaspora, wouldn't you be doing essentially the same thing? With Facebook, you're releasing information at your discretion. They can't go on your computer and take that drunk picture of you from your folders and put it online. Only you (or someone on your computer) can do that. With Diaspora, the same thing would apply. It's the internet. The internet is among the most decentralized things in the world. Yes, there are things like Google that almost everyone uses, but they're not singular. There are other options, like Bing. Look at Youtube. It's not worldwide. The Japanese have their own version, Nico Nico Douga, I believe its called. |

Hey I'm open to the idea, but I'm just confused about it as a whole. |

I'd be interested in poking around on it a little. I am very much put off by the possibility that this will be a pay service though. |

What? Where did you hear that? I mean, you can host it on your own server, which may cost money, but otherwise... |

I saw a rather negative review of the site on either the New Yorker or the Economist. Still, I'd check it out, except it seems kind of pointless to register for a social network that none of my friends use. |

I didn't say I wouldn't be interested. I'd give it a shot; there's no harm in it that I can see. I was just curious as to why you think Facebook is evil, or if you think it's bad in the same way I do. |

There are numerous reasons why I don't like Facebook. For one, I find the name aesthetically displeasing. |

Sounds like you might have to pay them to host your information or host it yourself. Which sounds like the kiss of death for any social networking service. |

I'm sure there will be ad-funded free servers that anyone can use, but if you want the extra security, you can always host your own. |

I have three invites I'm willing to give out to my NSWR friends. I will consider as dibs any posts here or in private messages to me stating the email address to which you would like the invite sent. First come, first serve. Diaspora is still alpha, and doesn't have nearly as many features as failbook, but it's open source and has been slowly but steadily improving since the launch. EDIT: I'm pretty sure you get 5 invites of your own when you join, so just because your friends aren't on it yet doesn't mean they will never be. Edited by East Anarx, Feb 14 2011, 07:24 PM.

No instant messenger yet, unfortunately. Send me a pm with the email you want to use and I'll send you an invite. Sed's in, so he can start inviting y'all now too if he wants. I have two left. |

This is very interesting. It's simple and, thankfully, lacks all the flashiness of Facebook. I would liken it to a personalized, customizable, and celebrity-less Twitter, rather than a Facebook alternative. Hm, maybe more of a Twitter with more controls and friends. Anyway, this is definitely something I'd like to keep up with. If only it didn't start talking in German when I tried to edit the aspects (friend lists). EDIT: Oh, and I have 5 invitations as well. I would suggest we all join this and make a NSWR aspect, since the aspects can have their posts shown separately (instead of Facebook's newsfeed showing everyone at once). It'd be like a miscellaneous chat thread, but more spammy, random, and offtopic. Edited by Telosan, Feb 15 2011, 01:53 PM.
