The mother had suffered a long time.
The doctors had confirmed that it was one of the longest and most complex they had seen.
Fortunately for the child there were no complications to the mother there was nothing to do.
The Empress Varena died after just over five months of her reign.
The whole empire, from the Baltic to the Mediterranean and from the Rhine to the Oder, had fallen into utter depression.
In place of the tricolor with the eagle, dark blacks banners waving on the flagpoles.
The people had lost the joy.
Philip was depressed and sad.
It was closed in a dark and hopeless silence.
The speech that had held the people, announcing the death of his wife, was all they had heard proclaimed.
Not even the joy of the birth of a child he had entertained.
Little had been hastily christened Frederick IV and entrusted to the hands of the nurse Empire, the Turkish Aisha.

That evening, in the castle of Shoenbrunn, the mood was somber.
"How are you?" Von Siedow asked Fortune.
The woman, sitting on a red leather chair that squeaked with the rest of the room "not good, very depressed, it seems that you can not change his mind."
Siedow sat on a chair at a mahogany table, "The Empire needs him, he needs this child ... you know ... shown in public."
A door opened, the Minister of Post, Konrad Von Carstein entered the room "That's chancellor," he said, "the memorandum asked me."
"See Fortune?" Siedow said the old man "to read it and decide."

Philip did not love those days.
Even years later, he was able to forget the deep sense of humiliation he felt.
Not that Von Siedow or Fortune had used against his imperial person any kind of force or discourtesy.
However, show little Frederick to the masses as if it were a cup of football instead of his son and heir to the throne was ... unpleasant.

Yet the welcome that the child was everywhere triumphant.
Vienna, Leipzig, Magdeburg, in every city of the Germanic crowds gathered to see the baby.
In every town there was a riot of flags and singing the anthem played in full from the best brass bands.
Philip found the show depressing.

"You do not understand," he wanted to tell them "that we too are flesh and blood?".
Every time he saw people trying to touch Frederick, or to be photographed in front of the stage, Philip felt mounting anger over the death of his wife.
She also should have been next to him.

One night after a triumphant parade in Nuremberg, where Franconia celebrated his emperor and crown prince, Philip had surrendered.
"No, Max," said one evening while Von Siedow was making the situation "I do not have the strength to continue with the staging."

Von Siedow had arched an eyebrow "My lord?"
"No, Max, enough, we brought home Frederick, Philip sat down with a crash on the bed waking up the baby but had not cried.
"Can not you see?" He went on, "is tired and more tired than me, does not even have the strength to cry."
In the room there was also Von Karstein, the postmaster general made a sign to Von Siedow "Your Imperial Majesty, may I?".
The emperor nodded wearily, "Yes sure" and snorted.
"Your majesty," said Von Karstein "the presence of your child makes the empire tangible for your people, we are not a democracy, ours is a state that is based on blood, your"
Philip knew these things, his family, the Habsburgs were one of the most noble houses of Europe.
Concepts such as he had royal blood and sorbitol with milk.
He snorted again, "All right, you're right, but just another week"

The basement where they found it was dark and smelly.
There was a smell of mildew on the furniture, the walls dripped moisture as if they were centuries old.
He sat on a rickety old chair, "Friends, brothers," said the small crowd gathered, "we must make a decision."
Everyone nodded, they knew what was happening, but the man took a small computer and turned on, insert a DVD and start the program.
The scene was simple, all cities in Germany Imperial feast for the child.
"The heretic dog," he said again "has a son, if we do that we must act now."

Verden, Dukedom of Braunschweig

Philip had not even thought about the possibility that something bad might happen.
The town of Verden was just another step in the long journey across the nation to show for his son.
When the bomb exploded was perhaps the most surprised of all.
Although judging by the look of his bodyguards was not to be the only one.
There were smoke and cries everywhere, luckily, they said, the bomb exploded half an hour earlier than planned, would otherwise have been a massacre.
Instead, the weapon, being handmade, broke out too soon because of the vibrations of the track.
They were only injured a dozen policemen and passersby.
The emperor, however, was furious.
The risk of his life, that of his son,of important ministers of the empire, and some hundreds of unarmed citizens, had a serious ongoing danger made him boil with anger.
In the police and intelligence services would have fallen several heads.
The Duke of Brunswick would have to report in front of the Reichstag.
It remained a tremendous doubt as to who might be the architect of the attack.
No claims, no message.
Nothing seemed to work behind bomb.
That frightened a lot Philip.

Vienna, Imperial palace

In the emperor's office there was some agitation.
On the desk Philipp was giving order from three or four web cams.
Beside him, Fotune, was talking, at the same time, with Von Karstein, in front of her and with Von Siedow by a cellphone.

"Look at me Redlinger", said Philipp "i want you found these dogs", the train attack was still fresh in Emperor's mind "have you undestand?".
Redlinger was on the other side of HRE, commanding a military exercitation of his own company, the weather was cold and was raining, his words were disrupted "Yes you majesty, i'll use the army internal security to find them...".
Philipp realized that the general wanted to add something else to say "Yes Jakob?"
"Ah your majesty, if i can ask, how much force is supposed i have to use?".
Fortune stopped to talk with Siedow and Karstein and wishpered in Philipp's ears "Little, much little you show the iron hand, more the people will see the velvet gauntled".

Philipp was not so convinced.
He was a democratic ruler, liberal is so many ways that other nations were not and they pay back him a terrorist atacck, however, until he had no found the terroristes the fortune's suggestion was good.
He replied to Jackob "Little as necessary, you shall be invisible".

Von Karstein, while he was speaking with Fotune, was reading a map.
As Postminister, he was called by Emperor to supervise all the internet and oldstyled comunications.
The map was showing the post district of the HRE but, unfortunately, no sign of eversion was emerged by his reserches.
"I'm very sorry my Emperor", he said "no signs of suspected comunications, at least no one relative to the attack".

Philipp snorted "Is the same Konrad, we will find them", the emperor took a piece of paper "i'll sgn here for you a special order, technically i should not able to deliver it to you, i wish you monitor any conbversation, online or not and that you found me the terroristes".
Von Karstein and Fortune stared.
"Your majesty", said fortune "it is a too big power and a violation of the Constitution".
"I know", replied Philipp "but they try to kill my son and me; i have no limits in try to catch them".

The police was patrolling the area around the palace.
When they come, he and his brothers were in reunion.
A look outside the windows showed a group of policemen.

"They know were we are", Paul said "someone has talked".
"This is not concerning us now", their chief said "Paul, you will leave the palace, if some one betrayed us we need to save our records".
"Ok Heinz", Paul replied and he take a big suitcase, inside there were the documents of their group, names and places.

Then the police broke inside.
A battle exploded in the rooms.
Terroristes shooted and the police fired back.
The battle lasted some hours and at the end the terroristes lay dead.

All of them except Paul.

How much time had passed?
He could not say with precision.
Months for sure.
He knew he was in a hospital until long after he recovered.
For a long time was confused and pain, which devoured him, had dulled his mind.
Then he saw the nuns and understood.
A hospital for the poor.

One day a doctor came to visit.
Had found him, told him in an alley in Berlin covered in blood with a lung pierced by metal fragments.
It was almost dead but had a hard fiber and had resisted.

He realized early on that be believed the victim of some accident at work and did believe that value had lost his memory.
Meanwhile pondered how to exact revenge.
On empire, but above all about the man who had defeated: Jackob Redlinger.

Phil got off the train.
It was a beautiful January morning.
There was a clear sky that looked like ice.
Thousand flags waved the colors of the Reich in a large crowd.

"Nuremberg, " he told Fortune "is even more comfortable than I remembered. "
Fortune, who was always close.
Then, this time, there was also Von Valdek, the Interior Minister.
"Your Serene Imperial Majesty, the Governor of Franken did the honors.

On the other hand was a special situation and, not coincidentally, was chosen the city of Nuremberg and its magnificent castle.
In this city, which for centuries had been the capital of the empire, Philip would have placed the imperial crown on the head of his son Frederick.
He was so taken the name of Frederick IV.

Fortune became the next "Philip, " she whispered, "do not you think that your child is too small?".
Frederick, moreover, was only three years.
"Perhaps, " said the emperor greeting the crowd, "but I need to put the crown on his head so that the empire knows that you have a successor. "

Philip, Fortune knew, he had not thought about getting married after the death of the empress.
The son was the only thing that mattered to him.

During the big party before the coronation, the Emperor was approached by the Bishop of Magdeburg.
"Your Majesty, " he said, "I can steal a moment. "
Philip nodded his head.
"I know you are looking for a tutor to the little crown prince, " the bishop added at once.
"Yes, indeed, but for now I could not find anyone capable of. "
"Perhaps, " said the bishop still "I am the person that's right for you. You certainly heard about the Amish case is not it?"
Philip nodded again.
It was a matter that happened several years ago, shortly after the birth of Frederick, not all the implications were clear.
"I thought, " the bishop smiled, "you could entrust the care of the young prince Luther Huss, the man who vanquished the heretic Amish religious cult in their land".

"It 's a clever man?" asked the emperor.
"It 's smart, knows the history and theology and is an athlete ... you could join them a Catholic doctor, a nun: Franca Nardelli"
"She is reliable?" The Emperor seemed impressed, "Herr Strasser my son to become emperor of the Romans. "
"These two are the best there is. "
"Okay you've convinced me, I will them to Hoffburg in Vienna in three days. "

It was cold.
The icy wind blowing through the narrow streets of Monaco of Bavaria made him tremble.
Hugged the bottle of vodka and gave a heavy mug.
Alcohol does not warm him but had the effect of cloud the mind.

Since he left the hospital his dreams were totally focused on revenge.
Unfortunately he had no money, had no means, he had no friends.

"They killed everybody, like dogs", he said.

He sat in front of the cathedral of the city.
Its dual towers rise up in the sky was a beautiful night, despite the cold that came in the bones.

"God", he said, "God, how can I get revenge?".
Only the wind answered, with a low whistle.
"Are you not, " he said again, "the God who avenged, avenging the wrongs done to Israel? Why not now avenge your church?".

He drank, without breathing, the whole bottle of Vodka.
Finally he was drunk.
Although it was cold Monaco was very much alive.
The people, dressed in heavy winter clothes, walking the streets going to the theater or in the elegant cafes in the city center.

They watched the large posters with the face of heretic Emperor and nodded, probably smiling for the recent incoronation of the young Frederick.
Someone, sometimes, threw a coin at his feet, shaking his head in disapproval of the degradation of the city.

Paul cried, asking God for a way for revenge.
Then he had an enlightenment.
He had to pretend to be one of them, earn their trust and then when they would not have suspected strike.

Vienna - Hoffburg

"The boy learns quickly, " Luther said.
Franca, who looked beautiful even dressed as a nun, looked at him smiling, "Really! It 's a wonderful child. "

Luther wanted to tell her he wanted a child and wanted it to be theirs, but could not.
As a Catholic nun, she was unreachable for him.

Frederick came to meet them with the open notebook.
"You like?" he asked.
There was a drawing, done in pastels, depicting a child on the throne.
"This is me, " he said "when I am emperor. "
They lefted him to play with colours, after homeworks, the child loved to paint.
Little Frederick took a serious face "When I am emperor, " he said "no one will suffer more injustice. "
"And this, " Frank said softly, "Where did you hear?".
The boy again increased his conduct "From my father. He says that's not right that the empire there are those who suffer. "

"Your father, my prince, " interjected Luther "is a really good emperor, you, if you go so you'll be great. "
Fortune then went into the garden with Philip.
"Luther", he said "Frank, you come here?" asked Philip.
"Yes your majesty, your child is playing with colors. "
"Well," said Philip "as you know this morning the caretaker government has been renovated with a large majority by the Liberal Party, " waited for the two nodded and then continued "I have intention to take the baby with Fortune in a trip in Russia and Bizantyum to show haw a good ruler should think and act".
Fortune, absently, put the card deck on the table to show to Franca and Luther the travel informations and stages.
Silently, a bit 'to listen and a bit' to see the cards, Frederick sneaked to the table.

"So", Fortune was saying "the first stage shall be Cologne, to meet the Pope, then, may be, Kasnya".
They all looked on the map "After that, you should...", she was interruopted by Philipp scrteming "Fred!!! put down the cards".

The young child smiled "Dad i'm only playing".
"It's nothing sweethearth...", replied Fortune then looked to the table "O my god".
Frederick had thaken three cards from the deck.

"What means", Philipp asked.
"A change made by decption will lead to a great good", she replied.
"And is it a good sign?", asked Luther knowing that God may talk in many ways.
"I don't know", Fortune replied.

Sudeten - Imperial Guard Training Camp

He was practically broken legs.
But everyone looked at him with admiration.
"Congratulations, " the instructor of the guards said to him , "Paul you have been fantastic. "

Paul smiled at the compliment, it was well deserved.
The exercise was bad enough.
As proof of admission in the academy of cadets, you had to crawl in the mud and then climb a rock wall.

The aim was to win the position, before the others.

Paul had decided that following the ordinary path would never come to the station, and had taken the harder road through the bush he had arrived at the top with 3.50 minutes ahead of the other opponents.

Paul was happy, it would be entered in guards.
No one had questions.
No one had asked anything.
He had not even had to change documents.
They thought they had killed him that night along with his companions.
Nobody thought he could be a rebel, a revolutionary.

The instructor, a Czech military Gregory Banek, laid a heavy hand on the shoulder "I congratulate my boy, " said "from now you are part of the imperial guards. "

It had been years since it entered the body of the guard.
Every year he waited for the right time, every day was expected to be hit.
But, as if the emperor was protected by an invisible hand, Paul had never managed to find the right moment to strike.

Every night, his murdered brothers, called for vengance.
Their blood cried out justice to God.
Every night, Paul could not help but turn to the wall and cry.

Then, God finally gave a little of his mercy.
One morning, while he was resting in the barracks of the Imperial Guard.
Banek came to him.

"My boy," he said, "I see you wasted."
Banerk was the closest thing to a father who had, Paul smiled.
"No sir, I'm just tired, these days I sleep little, will be the heat."
In fact the whole of Germany was wrapped in a cloak of oppressive heat.

Banek gave him a pat on the shoulder "Come on! Then I have the job for you, His Imperial Majesty is planning a trip to Cologne, perhaps, he will meet the pope.
Must be a decent trip, so there will be a few guards, I can count on you? ".

Suddenly all the exhaustion of dissolved Paul "Of course sir," smiled "just waiting to leave the palace for a little 'action'.

The sergeant made a sign of refusal with his head "I will hope there too, the Emperor and the Pope will speak mostly of religious laws."

Paul did not answer but in his heart he knew that however, the journey would be handled.

OCC: To Kas, if you like Intervene as please but is not necessary to the developement of the story.
I need Koln only for scenary porpouse.

IC: Every time Philip was in Cologne, he found the city more beautiful than last time.
The Azimut Hotel had prepared her best suites for the emperor and the city was prepared to party.
Moreover, whenever the Emperor went to meet with the pope, was the occasion for solemn ceremonies, celebrations in the streets and very large drinking beer.

Philip, then, was fond of the fact that the inhabitants of Cologne, although not citizens of the Reich, saluted him with the title "Imperial Majesty" and greeted him waving something, as did the other Germans.
This year, while the meeting with his holiness would have been much less difficult than usual, there was only to discuss the rent of some imperial estates and certain duties that Philip had, as a Christian sovereign, to the Catholic Church.
He thus had the opportunity to enjoy the party.

In fact, the brewers of Cologne, invited him to uncork the first barrel and had prepared for him and for a more nutritious lunch.
The emperor could not wait to sit at the table under the steeples of the imposing cathedral.
