The representatives of the People's Army waited for a couple hours at the place for the negotiation summit. It wasn't particularly interesting area to look at, being nothing more than a low depression in a hilly field. Lieutenant Szorkilokiv felt particularly relieved that there were snipers hidden throughout the area that would cover his team if things suddenly got hairy despite his present boredom. Eventually, the negotiators from the Resistance arrived. The lieutenant walked up to their leader and shook hands. "I'm Lieutenant Szorkilokiv and I'll be representing the People's Army of Yshurak for these talks." The muscular man with two-day unshaven scruff on his face studied the Yshurakan officer and his team. "Charmed," he finally said. "I'm Tanner Luhtanen." He reached into a pocket inside his jacket and pulled out a piece of paper. "Here's a list of our demands in exchange for the prisoners." He handed to the lieutenant. The lieutenant briefly examined the Resistance's team, briefly arching a brow at a pinned button one of them wore that read "What would Claire Freedhelm do?", before looking down at the paper to read the demands. He frowned deeply as he read it. It was a long list of names of terrorists and other political dissidents that they wanted released from the gulags as well as demands for increased autonomy of Yshurak's northern provinces. Silently, he shook his head. "These demands are rather unreasonable," he said. "There are over a thousand names on this list and autonomy just cannot be allowed in country if it expects to remain united." Tanner grunted. "I figured you might say that. So tell me, 'comrade,' what is 'reasonable?' " The lieutenant stopped to think. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ In Kotuulin, the Resistance's raid began with silence. It's two plants inside worked quickly to dispatch perimeter guards with silenced pistols while the main force crept toward the newly unguarded areas. Once enough guards were removed, the rest would be easily overpowered if encountered and one of the plants led the raid force to the supply warehouse. If an alarm was raised, it would be too little and too late. |

In Kotuulin the resistance's raid was going without a hitch as the perimeter's guard were quickly disposed of and their bodies conveniently stashed out of sight. With the darkness of night as their natural cover, they stayed to the shadows as they worked their way through the city. Although one would suspect that they could just have easily worked their way from house to house as the general population was slowly warming to their cause, though officially they kept quite. The Russians and their communist officials were mostly all bunked down for the night despite the perimeter guard and those few put on duty at the warehouse, men who by now were also the victims of the resistance. Working quickly, the rebels searched the bodies and found the keys, opening the warehouse of food, blankets, and other necessities. This seemed to be the bulk of the supplies in the area, though there were a small cache of riffles and ammunition to also aid the cause. Perhaps a bit disappointed that there were not more weapons to take, the resistance happily began to unload the warehouse, putting the goods back into the Russian trucks that had brought them. They'd be taking both, to distribute throughout their ranks as well as to the people far north still suffering. As the rebels did this, the silent alarm to the door of the warehouse was ringing through a receiver in Colonel Yermolov quarters. The Colonel rose from his bed, putting his boots back on in the darkness of his room he moved to the window and slowly peered through the curtains. His room was on the second floor of the building but he did not have a direct view, so while he could not see who was there he could see the faint lights of the warehouse. He knew that something had to be wrong and went for his radio but then hesitated. If something was wrong and no other alarm but the door alarm had been triggered, then the situation was undoubtedly very serious. Instead the Colonel left his room, moving towards the first floor where many of his officers were sleeping. Banging on the doors as he moved passed each room, he yelled at them to rise. Within seconds men were coming out of their rooms to see what the commotion was about. "Get the men, wake them and take them to the warehouse, something is wrong" the Colonel said to one of his officers. "The rest of you grab your riffle and come with me." The officer barely saluted as he rant towards the building where most of the men were being housed for the night. The Colonel about a handful of others, riffles in hand, made their way across the street and towards the warehouse. No sooner had the Colonel got within shouting distance of the warehouse at the resistance opened fire, hitting one of the officers and pinning the rest along with Colonel Yermolov behind some cars parked along the street. Returning fire, the men could not move and the resistance itself was all but finished packing the trucks. Jumping into the back on open as the closed the doors, resistance fighters took their seats among the crates as the trucks were fired up. Inside one of the trucks, the resistance discovered a Russian soldier who'd apparently crawled into the truck to get an unofficial nap. Having to act quickly as the man woke up, a resistance fighter hit him in the head with the butt of his gun and knocked the man out. Whether they would interrogate the man or simply kill him would be a decision for another time. With the trucks running and loaded the resistance pulled out while bullets continued to zip through the air towards them. The Colonel could do little else but chance the trucks, firing against the resistance until the trucks were simply too far out. Kicking at the street and cursing, an aide to the Colonel slowly approached the Russian commander. Standing in the street for a moment, the Colonel handed over his riffle and began walking back with his aide in tow. "Contact Major-General Tovarishch" said the Colonel, "an inform him of out setback. Perhaps he can contact Moscow and see if Command can track the trucks though I imagine they will dump the trucks before they're anywhere near a base operations. Also find and inform the Communists and have them ready to move out by first light" _________________________________________________________________ "If I may Lieutenant" Said Captain Kirilenko close to his ear. "Perhaps we could offer these men supplies, enough in the weight of the personnel they're holding hostage. I am sure Russia would be able to help the Communist government arrange the supplies. I can understand it might not be ideal, but if they'll accept it can be seen as a great humanitarian gesture as I am sure the resistance will share the supplies with the populace to save their own face with people currently suffering due to this campaign the resistance has launched." |

Tanner waited patiently while he watched the Communist and Monarchist speak quietly amongst themselves and found it amusing. The exchange proved that regardless of where the state power came from, a statist was willing to defend another statist in the face of confrontation from individualist empowerment. If he lived through this rebellion after it was successful, he'd probably write a paper on it. In moments, it looked like the two statists finally reached an agreement. "Very well," Lieutenant Szorkilokiv, readdressing Tanner with a feigned smile, "I will give you a suggestion of what's reasonable. As my comrade here has suggested to me, we will grant you supplies along the lines of food and medical equipment in the weight of the hostages you're keeping in exchange for said hostages. I find this an acceptable change and hopefully it will prove to you the generosity of the People's Government. Perhaps you will come to see the light after this gesture and put down your arms against us." Tanner tried his best to suppress a chuckle and excused himself for time to speak with his rebel colleagues. Most were willing to accept the supplies, as one pointed out, the people further up north really needed them since the regime in Venderwelle was so busily strangling the local supplies in response to their fight for freedom. After reaching their own agreement, Tanner turned back to the Communist and Monarchist. "Very well, we too find this an acceptable exchange." Lieutenant Szorkilokiv took in a relieved breath and smiled. "Then we do have an agreement. That's good." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Meanwhile, Yshurakan helicopters were out in a search for the trucks of supplies stolen from Kotuulin. Here, the forest was still quite dense before turning into tundra farther north and the location of the trucks would be difficult. Hopefully the Russians were wise enough to supply the vehicles with GPS for tracking and would be helping with the hunt soon. |

The Russians were quick to contact Moscow about the raid, contacting military command about the situation. Luckily, Russia did indeed have GLONASS tracking equipment in their military vehicles so that command always knew where all their vehicles were at any point in time. Naturally, the codes to all their vehicles were for top clearance only so it wasn't as if the Russians were just going to give over the codes to the Communist. After the proper files were found and the codes to place into the tracking system, Moscow caught the trucks on the move and contacted Major-General Tovarishch. Sending him the information electronically so that they could track the trucks, Major-General Tovarishch contacted Kotuulin and sent them the information. Still very much upset over the lost of the supplies as well as his two trucks, Colonel Yermolov had not been much in the mood for discussing the situation with his aid. Knocking on the Colonel's door, Yermolov barked that the man enter to which the aid did with a small electronic pad in his hand. "Colonel we've received the GLONASS codes for the Truck, we're tracking them now" The Colonel perked up at the news, motioning for the pad. Taking the device he looked over the information, but be unfamiliar with the area he could only tell that they were moving north. Taking the pad with him he left his room, moving down the stairs to the lobby of the building. Over in one of the corners of the room the Communist agents were seated and the Colonel walked over to them. "We've received the data to track the trucks and the supplies" said the Colonel, "I believe if we leave now we may very well be able to catch up to them before they ditch the trucks" ________________________________________________________ Captain Kirilenko felt quite happy with himself that his suggested had been so welcomed by Lieutenant Szorkilokiv, after all the Russian had come mostly as a silent observer. That said, he saw the opportunity and took it which for him had luckily paid off. With the two groups walking away from one another to finalize their agreement, the Captain caught the ear of the Lieutenant one more time. "Lieutenant Szorkilokiv I think this will be a very good opportunity for the campaign" said the Captain. "With your authority and that of the people's government, I am sure Moscow would be willing to place tacking units in the crates for the supplies. We could very well track the enemies movement, perhaps even find their base of operations." |

"How interesting, Captain, I was going to suggest that very thing in my report," Lieutenant Szorkilokiv said with an amused smile. "I have no doubt that my own government would agree with the tactic. It wants these anarchist rebels brought to justice as quickly as possible." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ With cooperation from the Russians communicating their tracking of the trucks' positions, the Yshurakan helicopters quickly homed in on the coordinates. They were getting close to the reported locations of the trucks when they abruptly came to a stop. With Russian forces quickly on their way as well, the Yshurakan helicopters landed in the area with a few still circling in the air for support. The orders were clear and straightfoward; secure the area, neutralize any resistance, and reclaim the trucks and supplies. Troops geared for battle closed in on the vehicles' position and were astonished by what they found. "This is Strike Team Yellow.... It appears that the rebels have taken the trucks into an abandoned mine underground. Requesting reinforcements ASAP in case of ambush in the tunnels, over." "Roger that, Team Yellow. The Russians are almost there. Keep the place under guard until they get there, over." |

Though time-consuming, the Russians held up their end of the bargain in terms of supplies. The Russian military leadership was naturally pleased with the quick-thinking of its own officer and, if this little operation was as successful as they hoped, they saw a promotion in his future. The crates of supplies from the Russians were made out of a concentrated rubber material, making them highly durable and reusable. Also, during the production process, the Russians were able to seal within the product tracking devices that were near impossible to find given the high durability of the containers. The Russians would take about a day or so to gather the necessary supplies, after the rebels gave the rough estimate of weight. Once the communists made the exchange it would just be a matter of following the flow of supplies. ______________________________________________________ Colonel Yermolov and his men along with reinforcements sent by Major-General Tovarishch, made the trek towards the mine and linked up with their communist counter-parts. The Colonel wasn't entirely pleased with the idea of having to take an enemy underground. Fighting in holes was never the ideal and having no real knowledge of the system of tunnels and rooms far beneath their feet just added to the inherit danger of the operation. That said, the Russians were not to easily back down from their obligations to their allies and upon the Yshurak commander's word, the Russians would act in accordance with their ally to take down the common enemy. Once the reinforcements from the Russians arrived, the Communist forces led the way into the mine. As visibility dropped from the darkness, both the Yshurakan and Russian troops made use of their nightvision goggles. They probed further in, each soldier watching each others' backs, fully aware that anything could wrong in this operation. An ambush was fully expected, but to their surprise, that ambush never came. Eventually they found where the trucks were parked and a small team of rebels loading the last of the supplies into a mine cart. The commanding officer of the Yshurakan forces announced their presence. "FREEZE!" At that announcement, the rebels went into action and opened fire on the raiding Communist and Royalist forces. Nevertheless, the rebels were outgunned and most of the small team met their bloody end as bullets tore through their bodies. Nevertheless, they did not die in vain as the last two hopped into the mine cart with the supplies they had loaded within and pulled the lever for release, causing the cart to rapidly roll away on the rails. From the cart, one of the rebels continued firing for a while before pulling out a grenade and tossed it at the raiding Yshurakan and Russian forces. The ensuing explosion triggered an instability in the mine and numerous rocks and beams of timber began to fall around the area. "Dive for cover!" shouted the Yshurakan commander. |

The Russians dove for cover, some running back towards the directions from which they came. The rumbling of the rocks and the collapsing of the tunnel echoed through the mine, deafening to the ears. Debris few everywhere and afterwards, plums of dust that made visibility even with the night goggles poor at best. Colonel Yermolov was among the unfortunate not to escape the chamber as it seemed everything was collapsing around them. The entrance collapsed as did the tunnel for which the rebels escaped. The chamber itself had not collapse completely as the Russian trucks took on some of the load on one section of the ceiling that had come down. The Colonel himself had been knocked to the ground by a rather forceful blow to the head. When he regain consciousness he found that his leg had also served as a landing zone for debris, he believed it broken. A Russian soldier under his commanding helping looking for survivors in the chamber approached the Colonel when he found him. "Colonel" said the soldier, "don't move you seemed to be bleeding from the head and your leg appears broke." "Trust me" there Colonel said in a sarcastic and annoyed tone, "I know. What is our situation?" "We appeared trapped though I believe some of ours and the Yshurak made safely out before the doorway to this chamber collapsed. I can hear digging efforts though I don't know how much rock is between us and them or if the doorway can been safely cleared. There are a few Yshurak with us, though I haven't heard if the Commander is among us. Sir, I've checked the trucks as best I can, they're salvageable and completely clean as far as supplies go. Sir, I also have yet to come across an extra Russian body...." Though the Colonel was still a bit dazed he understood what the soldier was referring to. The Russians believed one of their own had been taken with the trucks, and if his body wasn't with them in the mine it meant either he was still with the rebels as a prisoner or he was already dead and his body simply had yet been found along the trail leading to the mine. |

The commander of the Yshurakan raid forces, Lieutenant Nykanen, eyed the rubble that blocked the mine passage while teams worked to remove it. He hoped that the men caught within, both Yshurakan and Russian were okay. There had been enough trucks in there to provide cover from the debris for all of the men, but one could never be certain with the inherent chaos of a structural collapse. The constant static of the radios from the other end didn't help much in confidence either. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Colonel Navilevskii paced back and forth as he debriefed the airman from the Gritzmarov Airfield. All of the former hostages had come into his camp just hours ago escorted by Lieutenant Szorkilokiv's team and the Colonel had seen to interviewing each one personally and what he heard did not please him. The rebels seemed to possess sufficient understanding of how to operate the equipment at the base which indicated that a number of military deserters were among their ranks. Also troubling was the fact that a Dominion Demonspider Armored Assault Vehicle was indeed present at the airfield, although some had described it as looking "somewhat patched up." Just where in this infernal world did they find such a monstrosity? he thought angrily to himself. |

The men trapped in the chamber were all accounted for by this time. Luckily no one lost their lives over the cave-in though some were in need of medical attention sooner rather than later. Colonel Yermolov was among those that was in need of medical attention, although some of his men were able to bandage his head and make a splint for his leg. They were stuck in the cave for over an hour before the first rays of outside light came pouring into the cavern. The Yshurakians on the other side finally broke through the rumble and were able to create a small doorway for which the men could either climb out or be carried out depending on their condition. "Not a moment too soon Lieutenant" said the Colonel with a smile as the men placed him on a stretcher. "It seems the rebels have again foiled us but I imagine, as you have, that these tunnels can't go far. If you have no already, I would suggest contacting your government and see if a map of these mines can be procured. Perhaps the rebels are using them as means of travel, if they all converge on one stop that may be a base of operations for them." With that the Colonel laid down on the stretcher and the men carried him off to the awaiting medics. _____________________________________________________ As soon as supplies were given over, Captain Kirilenko reported back to his superior Colonel Sokolov who was already tracking the supplies via the GLONASS system. They were naturally forwarding the information back to their communist partners though the Captain took it upon himself to forward the information directly back to the Yshurak Colonel. Saluting the man as he came into his presence, he could tell that he was deep in thought. Over what, naturally, he did not know. Kirilenko was told that he'd just finished his de-briefing of the capture airmen. No doubt that supplied him with information previously unknown to the Communist government. What, he could only hope would be shared with Russian forces but at the moment that was not important. "Colonel" said the Captain, "as promised the tracking units are operational and we are tracking the rebels as we speak. Russian forces are ready to assist yours in whatever next step your government wishes to take." |

Colonel Navilevskii looked up at the Russian captain from his deliberations—having still been caught in thought about the Demonspider Armored Assault Vehicle—and nodded, steepling his fingers. "Excellent," he replied with a grim smile. "We'll simply wait until the crates are distributed to their caches and then make our move against them. We'll be pooling as much of our resources into this strike to ensure its full success. The rebels may have spread anarchy through the northern regions and seized an air base, but we still control the majority of the land and our military and police are ready to utilize the lock-down we've imposed as ordered. The raids will be swift and decisive thanks your country's quick thinking." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Lieutenant Nykanen operated on the Russian Colonel's suggestion quickly. Radioing base, he requested a message be put through to the local government archives for a map of the mine that the army had discovered. Government offices immediately began to bustle with activity as personnel began to comb the records for any information on the mine. Eventually something was uncovered. The mine was once the property of the Hjakjaal Corporation, back before Communism had come into power in Yshurak. It had been closed by the Jan Horembolg administration—the Liberal president at the time—for environmental reasons. A map of the mines was curiously missing from the local files, but it was almost certain that a copy had been made for President Horembolg's records back in Venderwelle. It took almost an entire day to find it, but eventually a map of the mines was uncovered in the Presidential records. |

Major-General Tovarishch was soon informed of the unfortunate evens at the mine. Though Colonel Yermolov had been severely injured, the Russian medical officer's report suggested it was not life-threatening although it was doubtful the Colonel would return to active duty anytime soon. Indeed, it was at the suggestion of the medical officer that the Major-General gave orders to have the Colonel temporarily relieved of his command and sent back to Russia for proper medical treatment and rehabilitation. The Major-General was also informed of the success at the airbase and that the GLONASS system was currently tracking the freights. Already it seemed, the supplies were traveling farther north and would no doubt be split up at some point. Like his Yshurak counter-parts, Major-General Tovarishch could not help but be worried of the idea of the Demon spider. They had been formidable weapons to fight against during the Dominion Wars, many men forfeited their lives to bring them down. It was hoped, like with all downed armor in war, that they were completely inoperable and were in no shape to be repaired. The occurrence of this one prove that those thoughts were inaccurate and certainly created a dangerous precedent as many weapons went unaccounted for by the war's end. Luckily, the Russians did indeed have some experience in fight the infernal machines and better tactics following the war had been developed. That said, it still would not be easy and the Major-General feared for the lives that would have to be lost in order to bring the beast down. |

After about several hours on the road, the crates eventually arrived at several northern towns and cities; Jinkiraal, Havmood, Itchirka, and Yerdin. It was partially expected as all were hotbeds of Resistance activity, but unfortunately they weren't the only ones. Nevertheless it was a start and when the Russians relayed this information to Yshurak, a simultaneous strike was ordered on each of the installations. The Russians were welcomed to join if they wanted. Helicopters soared into the area around each building, some of them warehouses, others old office buildings. Troops and police encircled each installation with armored vehicles and heavy assault weapons, decked out head to foot in body armor. In one city, the coastal community of Havmood, one of the rebels peeked out a window to see row after row of communist forces in the street. "Shit." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ In the mines.... The tunnels were a winding maze and even with a map, navigation was tricky. Nevertheless, one of the scout teams came across something unexpected. "This tunnel looks new," the Corporal leading the small group said. "Notice how the wooden beams reinforcing it look fresh compared to the greying rot in the others. Check the map." After a brief look at the map, the Private nodded. "It's new all right, Corporal." "All right, I'm radioing this information now." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ A glassful of water hit the Russian soldier in the face. "Wake up." When the Russian opened his eyes, he found himself in a small storage room and tied to a chair. Standing in front of him were two people, a man and a woman. "We need to ask you about a few things," said the man. |

The Russians decided to aid the raids with several Mil Mi-24 helicopters, all sent out to give air support and recon to the ground forces. Colonel Sokolov sent Captain Kirilenko on board one of the Mil Mi-24s that went out to Havmood. He was merely sent as an observer, much like in his role previously when he was sent with the negotiation team. It was somewhat a reward given that these raids were the result of his own suggestion. The Captain did not care that he had no real command in the operation, as he understood really that the Russians were following the Communist's lead and were only giving support to their operation. _____________________________________________ Yuri blinked several times as he tried to focus his eyes. When at last his sight came to him he could see the man and woman standing before him. He wasn't sure where he was or why he was tied up, he only remembered deciding to take a nap in the back of the truck and then.....shit. Whether or not he remembered it all wasn't necessary, he remembered enough to figure out he was now a prisoner of war or at the very least, a man who was at the wrong place and a very wrong time. Shaking his head to get some of the water off his face, he did like any good soldier would. "I am Yuri Alexandervich Polzunov, rank Efreitor, number 0274-386....." |

"Yeah, okay, that's useful," said the man as he scribbled down the information on a tablet. "So, Mr. Polzunov, are you by any chance a compassionate man?" Yuri blinked at the question, confused. " 'Compassionate?' " "Yeah, y'know, do you care about other people? Feel sympathy for the oppressed?" Yuri shrugged. "Da, I suppose I do." The man nodded, seeming to feel sincerity. "So how can you support a regime that treats its people like little wind-up toys that it can direct at a whim?" ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Inside the rebel hideout in Havmood, its occupants scrambled about in organized urgency. The enemy was at the front door, and from the sound of things via short-lived communication before the land-line was cut by the Communist forces, things were going to hell in three other cities. Somehow the Communist regime in Venderwelle had uncovered four of their operation posts. This was not good as it threatened the very backbone of the Resistance. No one knew if the siege was more widespread elsewhere, but they would have to assume that it was. First and foremost, the base would have to be evacuated. Already the emergency escape hatch that led into the cold, underground sewer system was opened and noncombatants, such as innocent, suffering civilians who were merely present to receive needed supplies from the crates, were ushered into those labyrinthine tunnels with armed experts who were familiar with the layout. In the building proper, rebel combatants took up defensive positions while demolitionists moved about, wiring the building to blow in the last resort if it was taken—which was extremely likely. After the rebels remained silent and non-compliant to the Communists' orders to surrender, the Communists shot a barrage of tear gas grenades into the building. Fortunately the Resistance was prepared and its troops had masks for such occasions. After that, gunfire erupted from both sides. |

"Takes us around there comrade" Captain Kirilenko ordered the pilot as their Mil Mi-24 swung around to the east side of the building, with the other swinging around to the west which was the Captain's previous position. Both choppers were not flying low for fear of gunfire and were prepared to completely break off if they were directly targeted and it endangered them. After all, the Communist below didn't need a chopper coming down on them in a blaze. The exchange between forces was intense although from what Kirilenko could see, the Communists were making ground. No doubt the worse of it will come when they enter the building proper he thought to himself. Then the radio came live and a Communist commander on the ground request that the Russian choppers target the upper windows of the building and relieve the men on the ground from the gunfire from above. Captain Kirilenko order the second Chopper to comply and it came down and made a complete circular pass of the building, spraying it with bullets before breaking off again. __________________________________________________________________________ "What kind of question is that comrade" Yuri asked. He was rebutted by his comrade comment and then asked to simply answer the question. Shrugging, he answered to the best of his ability. "It is not my place to think of such things. I am told Russia only worries about the weapons in this country and what your people may do with them if you win. You've made to effort to contact any government outside this country and make your case. I imagine if the situation here is how to say, and you were willing to peacefully protest, Russia would have been willing to help...." |

"Ah, the old concern that governments have over an armed populace," the man said with a smile. "Well here's the deal, governments should be afraid of their people, not the other way around. After all, aren't we the ones that pay their paychecks? You speak of peaceful protest as if we didn't try, so it's clear you're unaware of how this revolution truly began." He grimaced. "We did protest. After the Dominion was wiped out and pushed out of Yshurak, some of us felt it was time to break away from the communist system and return to a free economic system and local autonomous governments. Unfortunately, once these statist bastard commies have their hold on something, they won't let go. They came back and brought violence with them, reinforcing their so-called order to 'control the chaos created out of the Dominion's invasion.' Whenever we did protest, people were rounded up, arrested, silenced, sometimes disappeared. "That's when we started getting more organized and started striking back, because if we couldn't be heard... we'll we'd just get in their face and yell louder." His smile returned. More serious, the man's female companion entered the conversation. "With that said," she began, "we've heard reports of your people going around, interrogating people before allowing them access to supplies. While at the moment I won't highlight the unjust nature of such a policy, I have to be curious about the purpose and content of such interrogations so that we can be better prepared for them." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The battle to defend the rebel hideout in Havmood was going south. The Communists had them outmanned, outgunned, and outmatched. Gradually the rebels that were still standing began to fall back while the Communist forces cautiously entered the building. With the building fully rigged to blow, the former hideout was now one big giant trap. Each of the rebel combatants that could make it filed into the emergency escape hatch. Those that couldn't continued to hold the rear guard and even gave their lives to make sure that the others could get away. As the Communist forces probed the interior of building, searching for any potential holdouts, the remote detonator was used and triggered the explosives wired throughout. The whole building went up like a matchstick. |

"Da mistakes are made I guess" said Yuri as he shrugged again, "perhaps Russia did not pay attention enough I do not know these things. I trust my government is doing the right thing at all times, she pays my bills, my children will go to good schools and have jobs when they graduate. I imagine Russia's worry is a natural one. These questions...." Yuri stated after the question was asked, "we aren't really interrogating anyone. The Communists, they do not tell us much and Russia needs to know for itself what we're fighting. We don't know anything about you so-called rebels, my superiors tell me Yuri, ask if they know people in the resistance, what are they fighting for, what do they want, can Russian contact them and so I do it. I ask and then I give food, or try to unless a Communist officer happens to snatch it out of my hand and begin asking his own questions. Then I'm told to back off, no matter how much I might want to punch the rude son of a bitch in the mouth for snatching things out of MY hand." No doubt by now both the man and the woman could tell that Yuri wasn't...the brightest start in the night sky. That said, he was one of the finer shots in his company and luckily for him he could follow orders well enough. Still between the inappropriate naps and the distant glazed look he sometimes got on his face, you had to wonder what exactly went on upstairs in that skull of his. _____________________________________________ "HOLY SHIT.....PULL UP.....PULL UP" Captain Kirilenko barked as the building blew. Debris went everywhere and the two Mil Mi-24's were lucky to escape the explosion with only a few dents put in the hull from the random shred of brick. Looking below them the Captain could see very little and the dust was thick and the smoke dark. His pilot got on the radio, using the communist channels to see what he could pick up. It took a few minutes but emergency chatter soon came across the airwaves as those surviving down below called in medical personnel for the wounded and dying. "A damn shame comrade" the Captain said to his pilot. "Its one thing to fight a man on the field of battle, its another to fight a man in a city. These rebels are fighting like rats, infesting mines, airfields, buildings....everything is a weapon for them. What every the government did we must pray our government never does or I don't think Russia could survive such war." |

Both the woman and the man exchanged looks and nodded to each other, smiling. "Thank you for your time, Mr. Polzunov," the woman said before she and her companion stepped out of the room and locked the door behind them. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The after action report on the raids was a grim one, but it was not a total failure. While Havmood went terribly for the Communist forces, Itchirka and Yerdin saw genuine successes. In Itchirka, the rebels were unable to rig the building fast enough—as it was the largest of the four complexes assaulted—and thus the Communist forces were able to overtake their enemy. In Yerdin, one of the Communist commanders made a radical order for a tank to kamikaze the building, taking blatant disregard of the possibility of civilians being inside—as far as he was concerned, anyone caught with the rebel combatants was a combatant himself. Many rebels were apprehended in both cities and would be in transport to the nearest military base for detainment. In Jinkiraal, the battle became more of a draw and the building detonated with still a significant number of rebel combatants within it along with the Communists. Nevertheless, once the tunnel networks that were connected to the sewers were discovered under the rubble of the buildings, the Communist forces realized they would need to begin employing GPR surveys throughout many of the cities to find the underground connections used by their enemy. It would be long and tedious, but it was important that they got most of these tunnel networks mapped out. Unfortunately, Venderwelle was getting impatient. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "Miss Sodderov, ma'am, I've got bad news," the communications operative said with a frown. "This afternoon at approximately 3:35pm, we lost contact with our bases in Jinkiraal, Havmood, Itchirka, and Yerdin. I think we will have to assume the worst until we receive more word." Lilya Sodderov turned to look at him and nodded. "Thank you, that will be all." |

The Russians for their involvement were a bit at a loss for what exactly to do next. Their aid work with locals in the northern regions had not gone as they'd hoped. They'd already loss men and while some of their actions had proven to give some success to the Communists, overall the country was still in the grip of uncertainty and to make matters worse, no one had yet seen the Demon Spider since its last use. That, more than anything, was a constant thought on the mind of Major-General Tovarishch who was eager to see that relic of the past taken down, dismantled, and metaled into scrape. How many had lost their lives during the Dominion Wars to such a monstrosity he often thought to himself, worried over how many more would have to die before this monster from the Lazarus Pit was put down for good. The War in the Americas and the problems in the Baltic were also proving troublesome of the Major-General and his actions in Yshurak. With aid needed elsewhere, he was now unable to give as much in the northern towns as he was before, some not receiving any supplies any longer. This meant that it would be increasingly more difficult to win the hearts and minds of the people, a tactic the Russians were hoping would have secure their more intelligence than it had. For now, while it seemed Venderwelle's hands were tied, all the Russians could do was give man power to the Communist's efforts to map the tunneling using their GPR equipment. |

Meanwhile, after exploring the new tunnel excavated from the abandoned mine, Communist forces found a hillside dirt road that led down to a small farm. The farm had lost contact with the Bureau of Agriculture some months ago and with the revelation of rebel activity in the nearby abandoned mine, it now became clear why. Obviously it had fallen under control of the Resistance. Almost immediately, Communist forces descended upon the farm, expecting to score another blow against the rebels as they had in Itchirka and Yerdin. Instead they found the farm completely abandoned, but during a search they found a lukewarm cup of coffee that implied that it hadn't been abandoned for long. Also during the search, they found several containers that had been recently emptied of gasoline. Clearly someone had refueled here. There was also no sign of the supplies that had been stolen from Kotuulin, but based upon available evidence, it was obvious that it had passed through here. To the Communists' surprise; however, they found a Russian soldier tied to a chair in a supply closet. Edited by Comrade Queen, Aug 12 2012, 05:58 PM.

As war waged in the Baltic and the Yshurakan patrols mapped the extensive rebel tunnel system with GPR, the rebels did their best to lie low in the meantime. Despite commanding an airfield and a Dominion Demonspider, the Communist Republic had the Resistance on the ropes. And so it was that someone unexpected came calling to them. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "Hey Head Girl, the Holy Roller is here to talk marriage." Lilya Sodderov eyed the resistance commando. "Honestly, why are you talking like that? We're not in public. Just send him in." The commando nodded sheepishly and ushered in a man wearing rather nondescript garb, just shirt, coat, pants, a hat, and old shoes. His eyes settled on Lilya and he offered her a kindly smile and nod of his head. "Hello, I am Brother Daniel," he said. "Of the Genesisian Catholic Church," Lilya replied in a flat tone. "Tell me why I should even consider listening to what you crazy guys say. I mean, heck, I say the wrong thing and you guys would want to burn me at the stake. Your agenda of controlling people to compliance through fear and intimidation to follow your faith kind of run contrary to our purposes." Brother Daniel frowned. "I'm afraid you misjudge us, Miss Sodderov. Such accounts have been greatly exaggerated. My church is much more tolerant than stories its enemies spread would have you believe." Lilya nodded skeptically for a moment then shrugged. "Alright, alright, maybe I have misjudged you guys. Suppose I'll let myself time to get to know you. What are you here for?" Brother Daniel's smile returned. "Well, I understand we have a mutual enemy. The Communist Republic opposes us as we try to bring an Antipope to justice while your people likewise struggle to overthrow its oppression. Perhaps we could work together to some end. Together we could weaken the Communists by delivering them a swift blow that could help my faith's Crusade while simultaneously compromising the resources that they levy against you here." Lilya arched a brow in thought. "Alright, you piqued my interest. Go on...." "Well, here's what we have been able to determine about your movement's resources, and you're free to correct me if we're wrong. But anyway, our strategists believe...." And after relating what the Genesisian Church knew, Brother Daniel proposed a truly ingenious plan that would set back Yshurak's government significantly. Provided it worked, that is.... |

Russian Command Office, Yshurak... The Russians continued to maintain supply lines from H.E.A.R.T. to the northern provinces, trying their best to show their goodwill intentions to the people of the embattled region. The Communist were still in the process of mapping the extensive tunnels for which the rebels were using to move undetected through the region and while little evidence of their main base of operations continued to elude them, it also seemed as if the heat from their actions were keeping the rebels at bay. This did little to clear the head of Major-General Nikolai Tovarishch who was now not only worried over his own situation here in Yshurak, but also over the escalating conflict in the Baltic. He'd been briefed by Moscow over the second nuclear attack and he could tell from the communication that the leadership was becoming increasingly worried over these terrorists. Drinking coffee while looking over the reports a knock came at the Major-General's door. Hearing it, he subtly called for them to enter. Entering the room were two Russians, a male and female, about in their late 20s, younger than the Major-General. They were dressed in traditional Russian military dress, though instead of carrying an insignia of the army, navy, or air force they wore the distinctive insignia of the Okhranka. Saluting the Major-General, Tovarishch returned the courtesy and offered the two men a seat. "Thank you Major-General said the male. "My name is Sergei and this is my associate Anna." Anna smiled at the Major-General. "We are with Okhranka and the agency has sent us to get a better understanding of the rebels." said Sergei. "As you undoubtedly known, there has been a second nuclear attack and there are some in Moscow who worry it may have some connection to the terrorists operating here. After all, we know so very little about the rebels and how they understood the mechanics of the Demonspider enough to repair the monstrosity." "So they've sent you here to get better information than I've been able to retrieve?" said Tovarishch. "Not in so many words, but yes" said Anna while smiling again. "Yes Major-General, we need intelligence and so we've been sent." "Fair enough" said the Major-General "although I'm sure you'll run into some of the stonewalling I've gotten from the Communists" "Allow us to worry about that Major-General" said Sergei. In truth, Okhranka would not be consulting with the Yshurak government given they would need to be operating off the record if they intended to get any information. It was dangerous naturally, as no government would agree to allowing foreign spies into their borders but the times were desperate and Russia wanted answer and information. "Now, we're told a Russian soldier was recovered from enemy hands, we'd like to speak with him now...." |

Following the successful meeting with the Genesisian representative, contact with his Church was further facilitated through cyberspace. While its beliefs may have seemed old fashioned to outsiders, the Genesisians nevertheless utilized whatever technological edges they could to reach their billions of followers... or to win wars. The rebel tech wizard, Oskari Pihlavisto, and his team connected with the tech experts of the Genesisian, a team assembled from the best in Rome, El Dejarbo, New Harumf, and the Teutonic Knights. Together, they began hacking records and files in Yshurak's secure databases while spreading general mayhem as well. The Communists worked rapidly to counter the cyber attacks, but few of their experts ever came close to the cunning of Oskari Pihlavisto. Eventually the next phase of the plan came into play. With IDs forged from the cyber hacking committed during the first phase, several Resistance cells were able to make their way into the southern, Communist dominated territories of Yshurak. A few were able to pose as inspectors in several key naval bases, while others simply as civilian refugees who would then have to sneak into the bases through back ways. Behind it all, Oskari's team and the Genesisians worked to fool security systems into camera loops and turning off crucial detection systems. And so it was that the Resistance's special operators were able to sneak through the bases and plant their explosives. They worked quickly, as Oskari and the Genesisians couldn't keep up their shenanigans up forever as the Communists would eventually catch on to the fact that something was wrong. Dodging most of the security sweeps, most of the explosives were planted before time ran out and the Resistance was forced to withdraw.... Now all it would be was a matter of pulling the switch. |

Northern Yshurak.... It wasn't easy but after quick maneuvering around communist patrols, Sergei and Anna made their way into the norther, careful not to rouse suspicion from the locals or rebels spies either. This of course was not entirely easy as both suspected the rebels spies were everywhere, even if in truth all it was was civilian sympathizers feeding rebel networks with everything they heard and saw in exchange for the food the Communists were as willing to give up to them. Luckily, both Sergei and Anna were somewhat racially ambiguous and can pull off looking more like locals if they choose too, though that was not the plan this time. After a long trek north, the two agents found their way to a sleepy village some miles east of the airbase that the rebels had take in their first strike. Both believed that if there was any information to be had or any way of getting their foot into the door to see the leadership, it would be here. For all the talk of shortages, both Sergei and Anna found that the local bar was still well stocked and patrons still frequenting the establishment no doubt as a means to keep warm as winter was swiftly approaching. Entering the establishment they got the usual local stairs that seem to always welcome new faces that come to small towns. Ignoring this, the two sat down at a table near the back of the establishment and waited for the waitress to serve them. Service took longer for them than for a local but this too was not unexpected and both waited patiently until at last given the chance to order drinks. After their drinks were served they enjoyed them, scanning the room in the process though doing so without drawing to much attention to themselves in the process. Though a small local establishment, there were enough people in the room that both felt someone had to know something. Usually, individuals like themselves were approached first without the need of them approaching others. With that in mind both Sergei and Anna simply waited to see if someone would make the first move. |
