Cool pic: Spain's Fernando Torres has an Middle-Earth Elvish tattoo on his forearm.

http://img.skysports.com/08/06/800x600/Allsport-David-Villa-Fernando-Torres-Joy-Russ_938302.jpg

The tattoo is supposed to say "Fernando." If only he got a tattoo across his arms that said "One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them, One Ring to bring them all, and in the darkness bind them."
I have been severally tempted to do this.

now that I think: 4-0 would be the minimum result of Italy-New Zealand

what squalor...we no longer have football ... we hope that next year, in the Rugby World Cup, our boys make a good impression

The Netherlands better kick Spain's ass.

That game reminded why I hate SOCCER so much. Had to fast forward through3 hours of soccer and commentary before I could finally see some action.

EDIT: Someone needs to kill that damn octopus.

There's a reason why the rest of the world calls it 'football' Att.

Spoiler: click to toggle

But I'm in agreement with you about the Netherlands. It should be a fun game to watch.

I think Italians are the only Europeans who say "football" in reference to American football. They say "calcio" for soccer, where as the rest of Europe tend to say something that looks or sounds like "football" in reference to soccer.

Damnit all. Germany was my pick and I really don't much care for Spain, who seems to have barely skated by all the way to the finals. Oh well, guess I'll be rooting for the Netherlands..

Barely skated? They played a much better better game. They had complete control of the ball, and dominated the German side. They have been playing defensively the whole tournament which explains their low score, not a lack of ability. They won the Eurocup in 2008, beating a very similar German squad in the final. There was no reason to think this game would go any other way. Germany had been playing against teams with piss-poor midfield and defense capabilities. Fuck, England tied with the United States for christssake.

Americans don't like soccer because they don't understand the game, and have no emotional investment in the results. Tell me the USA v Algeria game was not interesting, despite the lack of goals. It isn't about scoring - it is about suspense, holding your breath, hoping, not knowing who may win or lose even in the last few minutes.

That German win over Argentina was pretty impressive. I kept waiting for Maradona's head to explode on live TV.

Why? Argentina played badly. Their defense was laughably bad and disorganized, the team seemed to be without fluidity - a key component of any successful team.

I think it's supposed to be a calque, since "calcio" means "shoe" in Italian, doesn't it?

No, it's closer to "a kick". The Italian verb "to kick" is calciare, but it also carries a secondary meaning of giving someone's ass a good kick with your shoe/boot. In addition, a calciatore is the term for a football player. The Italian word for "shoe" is scarpa (feminine).
