Ask the instructors after the first class, "Do you teach to the texts? Do I need the texts to pass this course?" |

Well speaking on my own track record, I won't need the texts to pass the class as I hardly ever read the texts because they're almost always so dry, especially this education books. The history books aren't that bad and I usually always read them unless they were like an overview text book, then they were usually as dry as high school texts so I skipped over them, but the more detailed stuff I'd read. Apparently though, will be doing work out of these books, BS I'm sure. I think I've been in school too long, I'm getting bored and frustrated (mostly because all I've got left is my ed classes and they're boring as well as mostly stuff which I take more as common sense vs. something I should actually be taught), I think when I graduate in May I'm going to take a long vacation...anyone got a couch they don't need for a month or so next summer? Edited by NRE, Aug 19 2010, 09:56 PM.

Currently moving into my new apartment for the year. I'll probably be delayed on a lot of things for a little while. Also moving on to campus a week early is bitchin'. |

Alright, I've begun classes. This 40 mile commute is a bitch, but there's a possibility of me moving closer soon. I'm taking the following classes: History 116- War and Peace in the Modern World A pretty interesting class. Starts off with a study of the War on Terror, and then backtracks to the American Revolution, the French Revolution, the age of Imperialism, the World Wars, and then the Cold War, all the while highlighting how those experiences relate to today's society. Pretty awesome. We've started off reading The Dark Side by Jane Mayer, which looks into Bush/Obama torture policies. Math 115- College Algebra Mind-numbingly easy. I know it'll get hardish by midterms. The teacher is a funny Arab man. Spanish 102- Second Semester Spanish It's pretty sad that self-teaching for three months puts you at a level above people who took high school courses for several years. I probably should have enrolled in a higher level. Oh well. Political Science 175- International Relations Fun stuff. Looking at various theories and policy plans for tackling international issues. Political Science 480- Model United Nations Haven't gotten to attend class yet. Just got approved by the adviser. I'm thinking it'll be fun. And, that's my class schedule. |

I miss model UN. I think I was one of two people in my delegation who actually took it seriously. |

If you have the chance/space in your schedule, your institution offers it, and you haven't already...think about taking PLS International Law. I found it to be a lot like international relations, a class I really enjoyed both because of the Professor as well as the material. The Professor who teaches IR here also teaches int. law here in the summer. I suggest it only if, by the end of the semester, you still enjoy international relations. I was actually going to minor in international relations but couldn't fit it in my schedule to finish up the last couple required classes. |

Baritone - only one in the campus choir. It's a little arduous at times, but I can dig it. Whenever there's a baritone solo, the tenors hop in too, so I'm not entirely alone on pieces that require sectional solos to have more than just one person. Was a tenor last year, mind you. Painful as hell. |

I was a Tenor 1 my junior and senior year. I loved the section and just wish there was more of us so us guys who could hold it down on our own without the director having to pull over some Altos to help us out with certain pieces. I guess we were kinda lucky though, cause we had at least four guys for every section (T1, T2, Bar, bass). I had given some thought to continuing on and trying out for choir at my university but never did. Kinda wish I had now, I miss singing in concerts and miss the people you meet in choir. |

I hear you on the people part. Everyone I've ever dated/done other things with has been in either a concert band or choir. Er... EDIT: Well there was that one girl from last year. Very bad form. Oh... and another from back in high school who was pretty preppy. Big mistake there. Sorta regret that one, but hey, static standards are the worst. Edited by Ulgania, Sep 12 2010, 03:48 PM.

Sang for a year with the Chicago Symphony Chior - anything from first tenor to bass - had a huge range when I was young. Smoking has limited me to a Robert Goulet tiny range baritone. I remember in my 20's trying out for Carousel, and the music director started testing my range - she gave up on the top, and the bottom, since I hit every note she wanted. I was, however a natural baritone. Also played flute, oboe, english horn and a little bassoon in band, but none of that marching crap - I was a baseball player for goodness sake, and HAD to fit in with the jocks (and, well, there were no showers in band :shy: ). |

Yeah I've thought about it, there's a city choir I could try out for but I'm not sure the age demographics. I mean it wouldn't be as fun for me if I was the only 20 something in the group  Same goes for church choirs around my area, I don't want to be the only 20 something. Well that and you know, singing for a church would obligate me to preform twice every Sunday an I'm still kinda lazy  I dunno, it stays in the back of my mind and I think the biggest reason I never continued on after high school was the fact that my high school choir was an auditioned group so it kinda made us tight-knit. It could be I want to recreate that experience and I not so sure its possible. Ah, those were the days  ^^ |

Well, I'd suggest a gay men's chior, and yes, there are straights singing in them, but I think you want to meet wimmen, right? You could start your own, or just annoy everyone you know and join S.P.E.B.S.Q.A. (The Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartets in America). |

Well meeting wimmen wouldn't necessarily be a requirement, it would just end up being an added bonus  You know in all seriousness, I always thought it would be an interesting experience to be in a Barber Shop Quartet. Not sure if there are any around in my area....hmmmmmm. |

Advise for the college student: Are you in a course requiring several papers over the course of the semester? Here is some valuable advise: Make your best effort on the first one or two papers. Why, you might ask? Several reasons. First impressions are very influencial on instructors, and if you wow them initially, they will likely just gloss your future papers for glaring errors, since they have a whole bunch to grade, and they already know you are a great student, right? Secondly, earlier papers have more influence on your grade than a final paper, even if the final paper is weighed twice as much as the first. Why? Generally, if final papers are due on the last day of the class, your instructor has maybe two days to get his final grades submitted, and half the time doesn't even have time to read all those final papers at all. Sometimes, they just weigh them in the palm of their hand and guesstimate what your grade should be BASED ON YOUR EARLIER WORK. Take courses with final papers on Wednesdays or Thursdays. If the semester ends on a Friday, the instructor will have less time to grade that final paper if you hand it in on a Wednesday or Thursday than if you hand it in on a Monday or Tuesday. Never hand in a crappy paper early - it guarentees scrutiny. Never take an incomplete when a final paper is due. Again, same reason as above. Thank me with donations of alcohol. |

It works similarly in high school and middle school. I've been doing things like that since 6th grade. Be an exemplar student the first month and over the second month slowly relax into an easier pace. Then at the beginning of the second, third, and fourth semester, do excellent work for the first week or two to make sure they remember how awesome you are. The only classes this hasn't worked for me is math and any art related class. Math is difficult to fake quality, and I fail at art so badly that no "good" effort can be made even with my best work. Besides, art teachers look for quality more so than other teachers anyway. |

In Math, you are either right or you aren't. No room for the magic of perception. It is the language of the angels and an insight into the mind of God. Edited by Rhadamanthus, Sep 14 2010, 02:05 PM.
