This thread will act as the home for the Continental Championships, tournaments held to see who are the champions among the teams of our worlds five (5) continents. As with other threads, OCC chat should be kept to a minimum though IC reports/comment/predictions are more than welcome. The various tournaments are all slightly different in structure and are explained in the IC post below. I did not post the full list of teams playing for each Continental Championship as I did not think it was necessary. Teams playing for the Championships, as the name suggests, are divided solely by geographical location, i.e. teams in geographical Europe play for the European title, teams in geographical Africa play for the African title. Having said this, I noticed I made a mistake in one of my recent posts in the main thread. There, I posted the updated list of the various Confederations. I made a mistake. That list is wrong and I will update it today. The Confederations are supposed to be (initially) random groupings of teams, without consideration of geographical location. I sincerely apologize for any confusion I may have created. ***Please direct all questions and OOC comments to the main thread.*** ===================================================================================== CONTINENTAL CHAMPIONSHIPS UNDERWAY Posted Image Stockholm, Porcu Proper In opening a press conference announcing the beginning of the various Continental Championships, President of the Fιdιration Internationale de Football Association, or FIFA, Thibault Dubois appeared in a short video promoting football as a means to cross political and cultural barriers. With the World Cup not too far off, Dubois has increasingly used his position to promote the shared values of football and humanity. In the large media center of FIFAs headquarters in Stockholm, Dubois officially opened the various Continental Championships. I am proud to announce that this press conference will act as the official opening of the different FIFA Continental Championships. Teams stretching from the Americas to Africa to Oceania will participate in games promoting the values of peace and good sportsmanship. These competitions will serve to highlight the high caliber of talent that the players possess and, in addition, the good nature of said players, their teams, their fans and their countries. I expect an exciting next few weeks of football. Each Continental Championship is slightly different in its structure and a short explanation is provided below: Americas: 1 game played amongst each team, 5 total games per team, 15 possible points, two teams are eliminated, final teams play in single-elimination tournament Africa: 2 games (home away), 6 total games per team, 18 possible points, top two teams play in final championship match Asia/Oceania: 1 game, 4 total games per team, 12 possible points, bottom team eliminated, final teams play in single-elimination tournament Mid East: 2 games (home away), 4 total games per team, 12 possible points, bottom team eliminated, top two play in final championship match Europe: 1 game, 13 total games per team, 39 possible points, bottom 6 are eliminated, final teams play in single-elimination tournament During the initial stages of the Championships, teams will travel around their different continents, however the final legs of the tournaments, whether that be a single match (as the case with the Mid East and Africa) or a knock-out tournament, will be held in a single host country. The Confederate States of America was drawn for the honor of hosting the Americas final tournament. Ulgania was drawn to host the Africa final championship match. Kiru Tao was drawn to host the Asia/Oceania final tournament. Paradise was chosen to host the Mid East final match. Lastly, Hamburg-Bremen was drawn to host the Europe final tournament. |

Posted Image Turning to football briefly, plenty of action was to be hand in the opening round of the various Continental Championships, which got underway yesterday. Exact figures for opening attendance at various venues around the world, as well as television viewership, are still being calculated but the expectation is that the latest FIFA competitions have started out on a strong foot. Though there were many great moments, the talk of the football world after the opening rounds was about Yshuraks disappointing performance against Abnar Al-Andalus. Losing by a score of 3 0, Yshurak never seem to be able to settle themselves into the game, making several critical mistakes down the stretch. To be fair, (noted PBC football commentator Albert Gasse), Abnar Al-Andalus played with plenty of determination and should be complimented for taking full advantage of the opportunities that were handed to them by an undisciplined Yshurak team. I dont expect this to become the typical performance for Yshurak, but clearly the better team won yesterday afternoon. ============ Continental Championships Second Round Previews: Americas: California Eleytheria-Duo Falkland Confederation Confederate States Great New France Terrel Fen Africa: New Harumf Ulgania Zeelar North-West Afrika Asia/Oceania: Celebes Kiru Tao Kandy Kingdom Kasnyia Mid East: Alexanderhaven Paradise Europe: England Provincial Government of France Venice Abnar Al-Andalus Hamburg-Bremen Celtic Empire Metz Porcu Union of the Pyrenees Roman-Byzantine Empire Russia Great Britain Yshurak Ireland |

KNHR 2 . . . in a related story, the starting goal keeper from the New Harumfian Contenental League team, Guy Weese, has not been seen since the embarrassing loss to Ulgania in the second round of the League regional games, where Guy gave up three goals. Foul play is not, at this time, suspected, though not ruled out. Guy's model/actress/singer/waitress girlfriend, Sherley Tombstone, states that he never returned to their shared home on the Nile, but assumes he went out for "a pint or two" after the match, as he does after most competitions. We can only remember when he was arrested two years ago in the central plaza at 2:00am, naked, drunk and singing bawdy songs. So far, no sign of Guy, but authorities are keeping an eye out. In other news, a house fire . . . |

Posted Image Gli Azzurri continue to play confidently and with authority, as seen in their latest performance against Britain where they managed to break a late tie that the British forced in the 73rd minute. With that crucial win the Porcuians are locked solidly into second place in the European table and will look to avoid the chaos of the middle of the standings. A big win was registered by Yshurak, who has managed to grab its first points of this tournament. Though there is plenty of time for a recovery, the local press in Yshurak has been quite critical of the teams performance, some going as far as to call the European Championship lost. Lastly, Ulgania continues to roll, dominating its Afrikan opponents with speed and superb finishing from their two strikers. With three games remaining before the Afrikan Championship, Ulgania has nearly secured its place in the finals. ============ Continental Championships Fourth Round Match Previews: Americas: Eleytheria-Duo Terrel Fen Confederate States Great New France California Falkland Confederation Africa: Ulgania New Harumf North-West Afrika Zeelar Asia/Oceania: Kasnyia Singapore Kandy Kingdom Celebes Mid East: Kazakhstan Paradise Europe: Celtice Empire Provincial Government of France Yshurak Great Britain England Venice Russia Porcu Union of the Pyrenees Abnar Al-Andalus Hamburg-Bremen Ireland Roman-Byzantine Empire Metz |

Posted Image The Continental Championships for the Americas and Asia/Oceania have almost drawn to a close, the final leg of their respective tournaments set to begin soon. In the Americas Championship, Great New France and Terrel Fen have been eliminated and their quest for the Championship stopped short. Poor play, particularly on defense and goalkeeping, doomed the GNF team and a disappointing finish prevented Terrel Fen from moving on. In the Asia/Oceania classification, the Kandy Kingdom was eliminated. Unfortunately, the Kingdom was never able to settle down in the tournament, quickly falling behind in the standings and leaving little room for hope. However, the head coach is pleased to have had the opportunity for his team to compete at such a high level; no doubt the Kandy Kingdom will take away many important lessons to build upon. The final matches in the preliminary Championship rounds for the Africa and Mid East classifications will be decided later today/tonight. Ulgania is guaranteed a spot in the Africa Final and all that is left to be decided is their opponent. ============ Continental Championships Sixth Round Match Previews: Africa: North-West Afrika Ulgania Zeelar New Harumf Mid East: Kazakhstan Alexanderhaven Europe: Ireland Provincial Government of France Metz Celtic Empire Roman-Byzantine Empire England Union of the Pyrenees Yshurak Venice Russia Hamburg-Bremen Great Britain Porcu Abnar-Al Andalus |

ELEYTHERIA-DUO ESCAPES FROM CONFEDERACY Posted Image Confederate States of America Despite holding the honor of hosting the Americas Continental Championships and essentially playing in front of a home crowd, the Confederacy could not gather the necessary strength to defeat the Eleytherians. Chances abounded for the Confederacy throughout the match, but each time the Eleytherian goalkeeper was there to make the save. Being selected as the Man of the Match does not say enough of his performance, as he was called upon to make saves not only in regulation time but in the shootout as well. Eleytheria-Duo cruised through much of the preliminary tourmament, losing no games at all and drawing just once to, guess who, the Confederacy. There can be no doubt that this loss is a bitter pill to swallow for the Confederacy, both players and public alike. Having managed to hold down the usually dominant Eleytherian offense, the Confederacy had three very clear chances to steal a victory and spot in the Americas final match. It was not to be, however, and even if Eleytheria-Duo goes on to loose in the Finals this particular performance of their goalkeeper will not soon be forgotten. Final Score: Eleytheria-Duo 4, Confederate States of America 2 (Regulation: 0-0, Shootout: 4-2) ============ Other Scores: Americas Continental Championship Semi-Finals California 2, Falkland Confederation 0 Asia/Oceania Continental Championship Semi-Finals Celebes 2, Kasnyia 4 Singapore 0, Kiru Tao 1 |
