"We are ultimately not familiar with the Union of the Pyrenees, and their involvement in this conflict is suspect at best. What do they stand to gain from entry into this war? There is also the matter of whether or not the Roman Empire will choose to intervene in this matter. Their help would be incredibly useful, considering this conflict is escalating rapidly. Do we have a contingency plan, should the efforts to liberate Ireland fail and they become a Genesian puppet state?" |

"They stand to gain quite a bit from Venice, but I don't believe that they'll make any seriously aggressive action without being further provoked. The provinces of Galicia, Asturias, and Cantabria are currently under blockade, and they would no doubt fall to Union forces without outside help. Our navy is in the Isles, our army scattered across our territories, and our air force strewn across our skies. If the Union were to make a move, the only way Galicia and it's neighboring provinces would remain free is by the intervention of the Romans. Due to a pact signed some years ago, the Romans have to come to our aid if our territory is attacked and vice versa. I don't know if they can be persuaded to do more than defend Venetian lands. Perhaps William himself could convince the Emperor, if he can prove that Ireland is united once again. I suppose the Romans have remained idle for so long because they're unsure who to back, since Otto's faction favored Irish nobility and monarchy, whereas William has been edging towards democratic reform for some time. They're no doubt torn between their loyalty to William and their belief in monarchist ideals. To tell the truth, Venice suffered a similar dilemma, but High General Celeste assured me this was the right decision." The Doge paused and then considered what the Englishman had said last. A contingency plan? No, he hadn't thought of one. He hadn't thought the war would draw so many. The Irish had truly been busying themselves in European politics. "No plans have been made, but we should start looking to that, shouldn't we? What should we do with William? If his forces loose, I have no doubt the deceased rebel king's cohorts will have him killed. If the present Irish government is to ever return after a defeat, William has to live. He can't go to England; it's much to dangerous. He can't go to Galicia; the blockade is searching all ships. I don't think he can even go to the Romans since his presence there would inevitably draw them into the war, and possibly damage future relations. I suppose the safest place would be somewhere here, in Dalmatia, Italia, or Veneto. The Romans could assist in defending him when the Genesian alliance comes after him without causing serious problems for themselves. We must get in contact with him, but it may be best to hold off until we see how the current lines hold up. When those fortresses in central Eire collapse, so will William's power." |

"William's family is currently residing in London, as the guests of Alanus Lansdale, our Prime Minister, and his own wife Alexis. It is also feasible that William would be safe in Russia, should his evacuation become necessary, by virtue of the O'Siadhail clan's relationship with the Russian tsars." "Both of our nations apparently already have all we can spare in the Irish theater. Should Ireland fall, the League of Free Nations will be down to the two of our nations. Perhaps we could convince the Sperians to involve themselves more and contribute land forces, but we would greatly benefit from the help of the Russians, if they feel they should do more." "We should fully expect the possibility that our enemies will not stop with their conflict in Ireland, should they fail. The possibility of an Act of Union between the English Republic and Great Britain could potentially deter hostilities, but that alone may not be enough. The Teutonic Order and the Welsh-Scottish may well turn themselves on Venetian home territory, as retaliation for the war. Their alliance could attempt to convert the English Republic, a secular nation, at gunpoint. If such grave circumstances come to pass, what actions can be taken?" |
