"Work is the curse of the drinking classes."

The door to the Porcuian delegate's hall was quickly opened and revealed a stunning young woman. Though not the actual delegate, Altofiore's aid was able to distract Trouillefou long enough to make the initial encounter somewhat awkward once he stepped in. Altofiore himself was seated at a desk overlooking several papers. Trouillefou had taken notice of the Porcuian Minister's general physique during the conference, but as Altofiore sat now the hump on his back was much more pronounced.

Altofiore slowly raised himself from his seat and dismissed his lovely secretary from the room. The female aid bowed slightly and closed the door behind her after bidding Trouillefou and Altofiore a good day. The two men were alone and it was at this point that Trouillefou felt a small chill. It may have been the Minister's emotionless face, or his hunchback, but Trouillefou would state later that "the Porcuian Minister simply had a cold and distant aura about him."

"Good day, Chancellor Trouillefou. To what do I owe this pleasure?"

"I assure you, the pleasure is mine. Hardly the most satisfying conclusion to our proceedings, might you agree?

Yes, well. I am here, now, to continue them. In such trying times, the republics of Europe must prepare to defend themselves from imperialist aggression. I am not one to point any fingers, nor assume any prejudices, but it is obvious to all who witness modern history that those with the greatest lust for prestige are those with little responsibility to their own people. I speak, of course, of royals. Perhaps the Madrid Pact was more sensible than history has shown it to be, I say today. Perhaps we would have been better off allowing it to remain.

The past is past us, if I may make a joke. We must look to defending our future. I do not assume you to be a stupid man, so I will ask before proceeding whether Porcu sees a future with the Union, and if our meeting today may have the possibility of moving us closer to a future of mutual respect and cooperation in regional affairs."

"Ah, the Madrid Pact..." Altofiore began in his usual soft yet powerful voice. "I was but a young man in the last years of the Madrid Pact. It is a terrible shame that history blessed Europe with the first republic yet the Continent cannot sustain a solid coalition of republican governments. I hope you understand when I say that I cannot give a definite answer to your questions, but as a Member of Parliament I can give you a general response."

"In short, Porcu is always willing to cooperate with other nations in the international arena, be they republican or monarchist, anarchist or totalitarian. As another republic, the Union would have priority over other governments in the establishment of good relations. I am certain Stockholm is open to a future of mutual respect and cooperation, and I am interested in hearing your proposal."
