Doc chuckled quietly, "Well, if they are going to a university these days, the they aren't going to need humanitarian aid. Bucha rich folk." The message of peace went unanswered. The newly formed Celtic Empire needed a place to test out military equipment and provide experience for their troops, and thus Kazakhstan was the perfect place. Seeing how the Dominion troops there had assaulted a convoy bearing the white flag, and killed the secretary of war and defense, The Celtics had every reason to justify their attack. The heavy bombing and artillery strikes came at 0400 hours. For the next five straight hours, Orsk was continuously pounded. The bombers flew too high for any surface to air missiles to reach them, and thus little damage was sustained to the planes. By noon, the city was a completely different image then it had been five hours ago. Once the dust had settled, the Celtic began the blitzkrieg of Orsk. Helicopters and tanks rushed through the city, attacking whatever they could. Jet fighters provided for even more cover and destruction for the city. Troops moved in fast, securing each building as they went. The city was easily surrounded, and while soldiers were finishing the fight in the city, troops were placed as scouts in the surrounding areas to prevent any surprise attack by reinforcements. Predator drones in addition were sent out to scout the remaining areas. |

"And we don't need your aid. Glad you see my point. So now we dispense with the pleasantries and move on to why you're still alive. Why does a European government feel the need to meddle in the Middle East?" ****
"Tai-kong suo-yo duh shing-chiou sai-jin wuh duh pee-goo! I don't need this." Killian barked at his command unit. The Celts had the firepower and numbers to brush past what little defences had survived the bombing. And to establish a perimeter suitable enough to stop the Dominion Soldiers slipping away. The dead littered the recently prosperous streets: the Nagians certainly had no time to bury their dead, and a quarter of a million civilian bodies (blown to pieces by the indiscriminate shelling or trapped under rubble) were strewn alongside bodies in uniform. The ruthless onslaught was all but unstoppable. Only a few pockets of resistance remained; Killian's new makeshift command post being one of them. Killian punched controls on his comms unit to broadcast on open channels: "This is Lieutenant Killian. We have lost the city of Orsk to the Welsh. Civilian and military casualties have been total. All field patrols and local refugees are to regroup at Priekule. In nomini rex!" He gave a smug snarl before plugging a few rounds into the unit. Not that any force stupid enough to use unmanned vehicles against Nag Ehgoeg stood a chance of de-cyphering anything useful from it - but it made him feel better. A feeling that faded as a breaching charge blew open the door to basement he was using as a command bunker. "Ai-yah tyen-ah!" He screamed firing his sidearm at the first few soldiers to try to force their way inside. "Da-shiang bao-tza shr duh lah doo-tze!" Good last words as he was torn apart from shrapnel from grenades tossed into the basement. **** Elsewhere across the city, the surviving Dominion troops unleashed the majority of their surface-to-air missiles against the low flying attack choppers. It was a suicidal ploy, given the amount of ground support the enemy had, but these were hardened men who knew they would die anyway: and they knew exactly how expensive attack choppers were compared to SAMs. A tactic somewhat enhanced by the prevalence of cover from debris. When Killian stopped giving orders and the uplink with command was severed, scorched Earth tactics took over. Not that there was much that the enemy could use, but the Nagians were damned if they'd give the enemy anything but dust, spent casings and bodies to bury. Pieter took the earlier group of Nagians with him to about a kilometer and a half of the Albatross. "Right, give me the flag," he told one of his 'recruits'. "I'm not sure we should go through with this," he said, handing him the flag. Pieter nodded. "Indeed, I wouldn't be either, but you see, we're acting as a unit. We're all part of the whole," Pieter outlined. "Of course, I'm the head. The brains. Without me, your Lieutenant Rawne would have no chance in defending this city." "I... I guess." "You guess?" Pieter said, giving the man a sidelong glance. Despite everything that had happened in the past, it was clear this man was indeed a child of the Dominion. He grew up as it fell apart, and must have reached maturity around the time that the current circumstance had fallen into place. "That means that you, a limb of this great body, does not know what in the hell you're doing!" "But, no, I, YARRRGH," he cried as Pieter unloaded a round into the man's shoulder. As Pieter stabbed him with a shot of morphine, he told the rest, "Keep him quiet. Don't think I'm taking mercy on him, I just need to get him inside the fortress without a lot of noise." They nodded. They were all at least old enough to have served briefly under the initial Dominion banner. They were trained, fundamentally, to be strong, subservient fighters. They marched towards the fortified vessel. Pieter ran ahead with a white flag, and shouting. "I'm an Ulganian! I have prisoners here, and I need entry!" Tense moments went by where he thought he would be shot. It was not a fear, but it was a concept that crossed his mind. He did not care either way in the end, but it would be counter-productive. Within a few minutes, communists had them surrounding, bristling with Ulganian weaponry. "These are new," Pieter remarked, noting the upgraded designs from the age before his imprisonment. Inside, he was confronted with one man, Colonel Satylgan. "It is a pleasure," the colonel said, after trading introductions with Pieter. "If you're looking for compensation for these prisoners, I do not have anything of worth to offer." "Just keep them," Pieter said, "and let me move about freely. That's all I ask." OOC: Side note, I'm RPing Pieter as a psychopathic version of this man and this man put together. I'm sure you'll get the idea. I'm also putting some joking irony in the colonel, since Satylgan is Kazakhstani for 'sold'. IC: After a day or so had gone by, Pieter had located the exact spots he would prefer putting explosives. What he realized he had access to were not the highest grade, but they would weaken the structure, letting gravity take over. |

-Private and Secure- To: High King William Earl Ui Siadhail From: King Dahar dos Santos Mercri Voramix Greetings Wise King, I speak for the nation of Nag Ehgoeg. I have a simple message and proposal for you, and I ask merely that you do not dismiss it out of hand out of a misplaced hatred of the old World Military Dominion. As I am unknown to you, I will be candid. I am the ruler of what the world knows as the "Nagian Dominion". The rightful ruler of what the world is calling "Kazakhstan". My nation finds itself in crisis, rebel factions enlist the aid of foreign nations to establish false regimes that can result only in anarchy. The world rallies to destroy my nation out of vengeance for the crimes of my grandfather (Archimedes Malfisto) and the mad General Gassel. And why? Simply because we hold to the word "Dominion". Because we believe in the honour of soldiers and teach that those who fight to protect our lives should be honoured. We are a people misrepresented and misunderstood due to old prejudices. Your father opposed the World Military Dominion, and ultimately, was right to do so. But the Dominion has changed, and I see no reason why we should be enemies. Indeed, the Irish are a fine and worthy people. It would be becoming for us to be allies. And, indeed, I see one very good reason for us to be allies. Among the nations that assail Nag Ehgoeg are the dastardly Welsh. My government notes that these warmongering Imperialists have taken it upon themselves to form a "Celtic Empire": a move that clearly threatens the future of your people. In my nation these people have sent armoured convoys to help terrorists, ignored instructions to respect our sovereignty and (in their most recent warcrime) are responsible for the death of a quarter of a million unarmed civilians after they refused a ceasefire to negotiate the terms of a surrender. We note that your relations with this "Empire" are strained. Know that now, while they have troops committed halfway around the world, they are at their weakest. We do not ask that you engage in open war with these people: we would never seek to turn one sovereign nation against another. But it is said that "the enemy of my enemy is my friend". Should you find yourself opposing the Welsh and desire the support of Nag Ehgoeg against a mutual enemy, know that you have it. We are prepared to offer tactical data and to coordinate with your nation fully in this matter. I believe that a partnership between us would be mutually beneficial, and I eagerly await your thoughts on the matter. **** With Pieter's explosives in place, it was just a matter of him giving the signal to attack. That's why it was inconvenient to say the least that it was now that Colonel Satylgan chose to summon him for a meeting. Pieter noted that the Communist infrastructure was very much like one of a naval fleet: navy ranks were used for the soldiers, the Communists referred to their "fleet", used nautical terms for mapmaking etc. Supplies, especially medical, seemed to have been running on empty until their encounter with the Ulganians. The economy was fiercely rationed "according to need". Though Pieter had no notion of it, the Communists were living much like the people of Astana: propped up by foreign aid, with practically nothing to their name save the basics needed to fend off the Dominion. Satylgan was impressed by Pieter. Single-handedly capturing Dominion soldiers and bringing them to him had been a boon. But something was wrong about the man. His men had seen Pieter sneaking round the ship - undoubtedly inspecting it for his Ulganian superiors. Still Satylgan had a job that he needed done, and Pieter seemed like he could be his man. "You've done good work comrade. I've given you a couple of days to move around like you wanted. I trust we're all friends now. Your people have been doing good work in these parts. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't concerned about what your end game might be, but for now we have a common enemy. I'm guessing you're going to want to be getting back to your people, letting them know how we're putting our shiny new toys to use. But you've also seen we're cramped for space. The Dominion is in the city. The city is booby trapped, with snipers on every rooftop. We can't flush the Dominion out. Your people probably could, but I'd wager you'd lose a hell of a lot of men. Unless you knew where the defences were. So let's have a hypothetical - let's say you take one of the prisoners you brought in and you help him 'escape' back into the city, do that and you find the safe routes into the city. You find where the Dominion positions are. Were the civilians are kept. Where the traps are. You get inside, relay the intel back to us and your people and we crack the city wide open. "Now I understand that you've probably got another mission lined up, so if you're not in I understand. You can see we can't offer much. But what we've got is yours if you can pull this off. If you're not in... well you've done good work and we thank you and your people for your efforts." Edited by Nag Ehgoeg, Jan 24 2010, 02:52 PM.

To: King Dahar dos Santos Mercri Voramix From: High King William Earl Ui Siadhail While my father was indeed opposed to the World Military Dominion, he always had an odd respect for it. He had respect even more so for the Nagian people, what with that war in Syria so long ago. He always spoke of honor and right going hand in hand, about how honor should never be compromised. He instilled this concept of honor in all his knights, and myself. I am surprised you have contacted me, but I understand your reasons for doing so. I recognize your way as an honorable way, and Ireland is perhaps one of the few nations left in the world that still practices such old traditions. I do not hesitate when I write this: I would be honored to consider your people as allies to my own. I will not hide it from you that I wish war with Wales. This "Celtic Empire" needs to be put down before it can be started. Any information your nation can provide will be highly appreciated and helpful. I do assure you, however, that I will not take Ireland headlong into war as a fool might. I think that our first strike against this mutual enemy should be to expose their unforgivable actions in your nation to the world. I can make sure this happens, and I will also be sure to send whatever monetary and medical aid you deem necessary for your efforts. |

Within minutes of receiving the transmission from Ireland, every ounce of tactical information that the Nagian Dominion had to offer on the Welsh was being transmitted - from a full recording and combat report of the first ill-fated incursion to (at much greater length and detail) the Siege of Orsk. Weapon specs and noteworthy tactics were combined with video footage and place along with the details of the Nagian attempts to rebuild out of Orsk. A full record of the dead was also sent, and the footage that showcased the damage caused by the Celtic Bombardment of the city was flagged to make it immediately obvious. |

Radio detonators were added to all the explosives. Pieter started carrying the detonator around with him, but began to fashion a vest which had the appearance of an explosive one. He would keep it hidden away until the right moment. In talking to Satylgan, he considered his options. The man had offered to continue in his discretion, but Pieter did not want to test his patience. “Knowing the correct routes through a city like this would be perfectly fine. From my route here, I can tell you one safe path. In time I suppose I can make my way back with a report. “I’ll only take one prisoner though. If you see me return before I promised, it should only because my man died from his own traps.” OOC: I have an elaborate plan for this man, I swear. It will involve some nifty writing for the battle of Aralsk, then I'll be looking at things more broadly in regards to the bigger picture. Edited by Ulgania, Jan 25 2010, 04:49 PM.

The two men shook on the agreement and General Campbell left in the same manner that he had arrived promising troops to thepeople of Pavlodar within a days time. The trip back was about as uneventful as it was forward which wasn't something that sat well with the General. He knew the enemy was out there and if they attacked, his suspicions were confirmed. Not attacking, however left him in a constant state of wondering where they hell they were and what the hell they were planning on doing. Returning to the Airport in Astana, the place had since his time away continued to further shape itself into a true commander base. The Corps. of Army Engineers had already erected a large concrete barrier wall around a quarter of the facility. The flags of the Confederacy, Porcu, the English Republic, Alexanderhaven, and Ulgania flew proudly over the building entrance, with the flag of Kazakhstan flying on a pole above it. Entering the building the General got to his office and quickly began amassing two Division of allied troops, placing them under the command of a Porcuian officer, a man of whom General Campbell had heard good things of. They, along with the necessary tanks and supply trucks left without delay to Pavlodar. An escort group was sent along with the main battle group to retrieve Ben Stilgar and bring him back to Astana. With Pavlodar a ally, General Campbell felt confident that their ass, at least to east was covered. Keeping good communication between the two people was of course critical, along with supplies and medical necessities with which were traveling with the troops Campbell promised, communication equipment and the officers to use them were also with the group. This would allow ICON troops to give and receive reports from that area of Kazakhstan. The General was also organizing other military groups to begin regular patrols of the route to and from Pavlodar, as it was necessary to keep the route open at all times. The General then turned his attention to the map to plan his next move. The Ulganian representative had made it to Astana and had set up nicely in the office space left for the Ulganian government. They had begun sharing reports with the rest of the ICON forces of their troop deployments to ensure friendly fire was kept at a minimal if not completely non-existent. Battle Map The Ulganians had landed and were operating out of Aralsk. To help them, General Campbell decided to move forces into Zhezkaghan. It would also proved ICON forces with their first listen post closer to the border of the Dominion heart in the territory. Orders were drawn to begin amassing the troops, tanks, and supplies. In the meantime the General sent a message to the Kazakh President's office. He requested any reports that had come back to him from his scouts on the condition of the Zhezkaghan settlement and what people remained. He hoped to have that report soon, so that at the very lasted he could order a troop advance the next morning. Edited by NRE, Jan 25 2010, 04:40 PM.

Zhezkaghan seemed to be filled with the same quality of disparate survivors as Astana. It's people were nominally led by one "Pastor Shin", and were using the town's Methodist church as a "city hall-cum-market place". Note-worthily the settlement had a small number of working off-road vehicles and were conducting peaceful trade with both local Dominion forces and the people of Karaghanda. Pastor Shin had welcomed contact from the Confederates: eager for any chance at attracting new supplies to help the people of his city. Shin had, however, expressed concern over "the threat of foreign rule", insisting that Zhezkaghan belonged to "The Desert Mouse". Reports had also come back from Kostanai and Kokshetau. Kokshetau seemed to be everything that Baimenov and Stilgar warned that it would be - a lawless den of murders and madmen. Defiled corpses littered the city's outskirts; smoke from numerous fires rose continually; and, when patrols weren't being shot at, the sound of gunfire always seemed just a short distance away. Patrols into Kostanai had turned up nothing. The city appeared to be entirely deserted. There seemed to be a Dominion military outpost built into the city which included a runway strip, but, like the city itself, the outpost seemed long abandoned and stripped of anything of use. Perhaps there was more to this than met the eye... but perhaps the city was simply deserted due to its proximity to the bandits' lair of Kokshetau. |

General Campbell sent soldiers down to Zhezkagha with supplies and firepower. He hoped that he could negotiate a deal with pastor Shin in order to keep the people from trading with Dominion soldiers and officers. After all he certainly wasn't going to give aid to people who would simply trade it away to the enemy. The General this time sent a liaison to speak on his behalf, an English Major General he put in command of the two Divisions he sent down to the cit with the supplies. They were to offer along with the aid, any defensive aid they could as well as scout the city for any Dominion agents. So far the ICON Coalition had yet to run into any major engagement with Dominion forces but General Campbell knew they were out there. Finding and interrogating a POW, would give him intel he simply could get from his current allies. The ICON building was becoming more and more secure as the days drugged on as more and more of the defensive barrier went up. General Campbell was told that it would be completed by the end of the week, which was certainly pleasing. More and more soldiers and aid were also arriving to the airport on a regular schedule now. Most of it was from the Confederacy, especially in the troop department since not many ICON nations had devoted troops in the first place. More and more patrols hit the streets of Astana and kept the city safe both from outside attack as well as themselves. The report of Kostanai particularly interested General Campbell giving the city's procimity to Kokshetau. Kokshetau would have to be dealt with it ICON was to have any success against the Dominion, because soldier not having to look over their shoulders tended to fight better or so the General had come to believe. The General sent three division to the city, under the command of Major General Thomas West. Major General West had fought under General Campbell's command during the Dominion wars. He was the son of cattle farmers in Texas and knew how to take the bull by the horns when it was necessary. He was a straight to the point kind of man, who was a violent against his enemies as he was understanding to his soldiers. He demanded loyalty from the men who fought under him and was the sort of man who got that loyalty and trust easily. If he said jump, his men would ask how high and if he told his men they'd be home by super, then they made plans with their wives. His orders were simply, infiltrate and secure the city of Kostanai, making broad sweeps of the settle to confirm the reports that it was abandoned. Most importantly, take the Dominion outpost for ICON, having a military base..a true military installation in the region was of good interest to Genera Campbell, especially given it's proximity to the problem area. Orders in hand, Major General West and his troops entered the outskirts of the city by late afternoon. Initial scouting confirmed reports that the settlement indeed looked abandoned. That said, they wouldn't know for sure until they actually got into the city and working off of satellite images, they plotted the best routes towards the old Dominion outpost. Teams of five would enter the city from every possible road and began making their way towards the Dominion outpost. They were to scout out anything that looked suspicious and follow any leads they came across. |

The people of Zhezkaghan lined the streets, awestruck, as the ICON forces arrived in the city. There was much hushed whispering in doorways and avid pointing as the troops rolled in. Several of the armed citizens stood in doorways, usually with arms outstretched to keep their families and loved ones behind them - as if to shield them from some unknown danger. The more capricious of the city's children approached the soldiers to beg for sweets (a task they seemed apt at, if not well practised). The citizens of Zhezkaghan treated the ICON forces with a trepid caution. Reacting with neither jubilation nor hostility: there was something unspoken on the faces of everyone they passed. Pastor Shin came out of his mission to meet with the man sent by General Campbell. Though obviously concerned by the presence of the ICON force, he showed no fear as he marched to meet his counterpart and he addressed the Major General clearly thus: "You cannot be here. Dominion soldiers are coming here to trade and give out supplies. They will arrive in a matter of hours. If they find you here, there will be bloodshed."
Stilgar's arrival in the city had created waves. The man was evidently something of a celebrity, a fact that he simply shrugged his shoulders at when questioned on in passing. When not co-operating with the ICON mission, he could be found giving lectures on the nature of Democracy to the people (and could be counted on to always have a crowd of at least half a dozen). A recurring theme of these lectures was how the ICON forces would ensure a fair elections. A recurring, open (and perhaps rhetorical) question was when. It seemed that it was mainly the white, then the black citizens that gave the most attention to his speeches. The more Middle Eastern majority pointedly ignoring him. Reports of the "22" graffiti had stopped altogether since Stilgar's arrival. Though crime had taken on a worrying new twist with a serious assault taking place. A man had beaten another man half to death, and likely would have finished the job had an ICON patrol not stumbled on the attack. The victim was making a good recovery, thanks in no small part to the medical supplies brought in by the ICON relief effort. Both victim and attacker refused to speak on the incident. The attacker was a simple citizen of Astana, one of the hard working toilers who did what was needed. The victim, was Ben Stilgar.
Sweeps of the settlement confirmed that it was deserted. Supplies had been clearly scavenged from the ruins, but it seemed as if no-one had lived here in months. But there was something disconcerting about the city. Why had no-one lived here in months? An abandoned settlement was no great mystery, but no living souls in the area? No transient squatters? No raiders from Kokshetau? Major General West ordered his men to secure the abandoned military base: taking every due precaution in case of traps. And still no living thing larger than a rat was discovered. Probing a little deeper, gathering more intelligence, revealed not only no living souls in the city and the base, but no dead bodies. Buildings hadn't just been looted for supplies, but completely stripped of everything that might be of value - right down to the wiring in the walls and the nails in carpets. And there was one niggling fact that sat inconsistently with the abandoned city: the temporary airstrip laid down in the military base had been used within the last twenty-four hours. |

Ulgan artillery hit Aralsk hard. Pieter and the communists had provided positions for Dominion outposts to Ulganian command, but Pieter had left several known positions out. He also managed to plot out several safe, more-or-less trap free routes throughout the city, but again, had not reported them all to Ulganian command. Once Ulganian forces entered the city, heavy infantry spear-heading with several armed convoys of APCs, fighting became brutal. Pieter's opting to hold out on some information gave Dominion forces a chance to maneuver as needed throughout the city. Dozens of helicopters harassed them though, turning the whole attack into a game of cat and mouse, to a game of cat, mouse, and exterminator. The communists were finding themselves being pummeled by Dominion attacks, especially on the base Pieter had suggested. Three days and three nights of brutal fighting ensued. The Ulganians were well armed, but still strangers to a city they could only move so far through. Several areas were taken that had pathways, but any street-by-street action so brutality. A former Dominion strategy of sending in so much men that it formed a meat grinder, and then send in even more was evident. They would hit hard, force Ulganians to call for help, and be gone just as quickly. The requests for reinforcements would weaken the position in another street or causeway, forcing troops to have to constantly move. Dominion troops took the Albatross, taking several communists hostage, with Pieter being hailed as a hero. Word had gotten out that it, and a few other vessels were taken. Ulgan forces pressed into them, causing several grueling fights to go on, street-by-street, and now deck-by-deck. Finally, on the bridge of the Albatross a standoff ensued. --- Lieutenant Rawne had a gun to the head of Colonel Satylgan, with his men holding other communist officers at gunpoint as well. Ulganian soldiers had pushed through the rest of the ship. Pieter had been quickly identified, and brought to safety by a commander's order. ST9 agents met him and congratulated him on his efforts. The standoff continued, and while Pieter was being transported away, he made his own move. He had the car stopped at a checkpoint. "Listen to me!" he called, opening his jacket, revealing what appeared to be several bombs attached to a detonator in his hand. "Let me go. Now. I don't care anymore. You either shoot me, or let me go. I'm not going back to your cages, not after what I've done for you here." Guns were quickly raised to him, but he only smirked. "Well, can't say I didn't warn you," he said, pressing the button. The soldiers surrounding him leaped for cover, but nothing happened. Not at first, at least. In the distance, several deep-seeded booming sound could be heard, eventually resulting in some sharp tearing sounds. Everyone who could manage to see what was happening realized nothing could be done. The Albatross was collapsing, with hundreds of Ulganian soldiers, hundreds of Dominion and communist prisoners, all reeling towards the ground. The crashing sounds could be heard for miles around, and even gave pause to artillery platoons. With the center of attention on the Albatross, Pieter made his escape. Aralsk was no longer Dominion or communist. He had severed the heads of both serpents, and would let the Ulganians clean up the mess. |

The destruction of Orsk had been a grievous blow to Dominion forces. Reeling, the government had already started moving to frame the Welsh attack in the worst possible light. But diplomacy was not coming easily nor naturally to the "Nagian Government". Meanwhile, the Celtic drones were providing good recon of the area. General movement seemed to be Southernly. Presumably, from the open transmission made from Orsk, towards Priekule. Local bases and nomad camps alike seemed to be making the trek, and Welsh intelligence soon deduced the obvious: the Dominion was retreating and fortifying. Rather than operating in small cells using river tactics, or spreading thin to cover more ground, they were swelling in Priekule to form a bulwark against the Celtic tide. The provided the Welsh with an obvious target, but a potentially bloody challenge. On the other hand, the movement of Welsh troops in the area surrounding Orsk would be much easier with only a minimal chance of guerilla attack. |

While Astana remained free from Dominion attack, a storm seemed to be brewing on the outskirts of Pavlodar. A large Corps of Dominion troops had begun to encroach on the city from the South East (following the river). Theoretically, the infantry heavy force was out of range and the only shots fired so far had been from the dissidents of Pavoldar - hopeful snipers and frustrated amateurs alike taking pot shots. The ICON forces were outnumbered, but had the advantage of holding a defensible position. Perhaps it was for this reason that the Dominion had not yet struck... |

Major General Charles Brudenell was taken back by the alarm. "They'll be here in the hour you say" he said, "fine we'll leave but I ask that we are allowed to keep two men here to observe. The rest of our forces will go North, far enough out of town to be out of sight. These men I leave will only be armed with pistols and will remain out of sight. I simply want them here to observe, I promise no harm will come to your people." Pastor Shin knew there was no sense arguing with the Major General and the clock was ticking. He agreed and the two men were left behind as the rest of the ICON force left North. The men were left only with their pistols and were given local wraps to wear so that they'd blend in better. They're orders were to catch and remember as much important information as the Dominion gave out while they were in the town.
"I ask the son of a bitch in as a guest and this is the position he puts me in" said General Campbell to his aid as they rushed through the halls of the hospital to Stilgar's room, two MPS closely beside them. "No one comes in or out without expressed consent from me" said the General to the MPs who setup outside Stilgar's room. "Not even the damn doctors...actually on second thought, get an ICON medic team over here I am them caring for him instead." The General walked into the room. Stilgar was laying in the bed about half asleep while a nurse was tending to his bandages. Ben didn't see nor acted as if he heard the General enter. The General motioned for the nurse to leave, she gave a nob finished her business and left. The door was quietly closed behind her and the General's aid stood before the door keeping everyone out until the General was done. Cracking the blinds of Stilgar's room the General looked down the street below. Closing the blinds he moved over to Stilgar's bedside and took a set on the stool. Moving in close he began to whisper into Stilgar's ear "Now listen here Ben, I can only protect you and make this shit hole of a country something worth looking at at the end of the day if you play by the rules. I asked you here because I wanted give your people a voice in the new democracy I'm going to build here if it kills me. I can't do that if you're running the streets and giving soap box speeches on how we're making many promises and delivering little results. You know I was going to come here and ask what the hell happened but by the time I got to that door I realized something....I don't care. If you want to get your ass kick out there or worse, get killed then by all means you do it. Just remember that I'm the best damn shot you've got to get what you want and if you play by the rules that's just what I'll make sure happens." The General didn't even wait to see if Stilgar would wake up or even acknowledge that he'd heard him. He got up from his seat and left the room.
Major General West had his men complete their sweep of the city and then reported back to Astana. General Campbell had just returned from the hospital when he was requested in the communication's room. He spoke with MG West via a video conference and was equally as confused as West about the situation. "So everything is gone West, any ideas on why?" asked Campbell. "No sir" said West. "Its far beyond anything I can think of." "Dig deeper then West" said Campbell. "Set your boys up at the base, spend the night and come morning dig deeper. I want to know what happened. Who took these people, why they took them and if possible where they went." "Yes sir" said West, saluting the General before the video feed was cut. West and his men setup in the old bed for the night. Nightfall was close and they wouldn't have much luck searching through the town at night. A perimeter was established around the base and artillery was setup ready to shoot at anything unfriendly coming from the sky. West couldn't shake the feeling however that it was going to be a long night.
ICON forces watched the Dominion forces with care. They knew they had a defensible location but they also knew that they were terribly outnumbered. They would have to remain heavily on their artillery and tanks to help weed out enemy numbers if it came to fighting one-on-one. If it came to that however, the soldiers of ICON weren't entirely sold that they'd be able to make it out of it alive. Still they had orders to defend the city and defend it they would until there was nothing left to defend. They radioed to Astana however, in hopes of getting in air coverage that could be spared. Before getting off the radio, they received world that air coverage would be on the way. |

Sure enough a small convoy of Dominion humvees rolled into town just as predicted and headed straight for the local trading post. The convoy looked as though it were the dictionary definition of "ramshackle": the soldiers were rugged and unkempt, and some of the vehicles were literally held together with duct-tape. The small force was lightly armed: the ICON forces waiting in the north would have no trouble eliminating them if they choose to do so (but a firefight in the middle of the city was bound to cause collateral damage). The Dominion forces were received without ceremony: the town's reaction to the ICON forces was "intrigued but neutral", the reaction to the Dominion was simply "neutral". The ICON troops observed a curt exchange between Shin and the least bedraggled Dominion soldier (presumably an officer). And then the Dominion forces set up shop. Queues started to form (somewhat apathetically) as the Dominion forces unloaded MREs and started handing them out for free to anyone who'd care to take one. To the side children's toys; clothing; cigarettes; and (what was presumably) bottles of alcohol were being bartered for whatever the locals had to offer. For the most part this seemed to be a twisted take on the idea of "toys for guns", as firearms and ammunition seemed to fetch the highest price for these luxuries. The same street urchins who'd begged at the heels of the ICON patrol plied their trade on the Dominion forces, but were rewarded only with the same MREs that the Dominion forces were giving out to everyone. The ICON forces observed the Dominion was doing little to try and win the hearts and minds of these people. There were no speeches, no promises of rebuilding and bringing more food. Other than handing out free food and offering the locals a good price for their scrap and any ammo they might have, it didn't seem like they were doing much for these people. Or that the ICON soldiers would learn much from their observations: there was almost nothing to observe. Deciding to take a risk to gather more intelligence, one of the ICON soldiers approached the Dominion soldier passing out the MREs. "What are my options?" He asked gesturing at the MREs, trying a little to mask his accent but not overly so (this was Nag Ehgoeg after all, a hub of multiculturalism in the Middle East even before it became a part of a globe spanning super-state). The Dominion soldier looked baffled and elated by the question: none of the locals had spoken more than two words to him since the Dominion had rolled into town. "Well these are all soy-Manicotti and lentils. Same as last week if you grabbed one then. Same as next week unless we get a ration drop before then." The Dominion soldier gave a weak smile and shrugged, "If we don't get the supplies, you don't get the supplies. But if you want variety, we've got 'Chicken Fajita' meals back at the base. Only for Dominion soldiers, so you'd have to Enlist... but you'd get a shiny gun, be helping to rebuild your nation and you'll never go hungry again. Providing you can stomach these things." He added jokingly gesturing at the MREs. "I think I'll pass." The ICON soldier said and made to turn away. "Wait!" The Dominion soldier called out apologetically, "Sorry, I mean, we're not meant to be recruiting. And I know all you people think that you're doing fine here: I mean, you, personally, are obviously not starving to death. But you people need us. It's dangerous out there. Raiders in the East, foreign troops in the North and in the South. If the gaikokujin come here, how are you going to defend yourselves? Offer to trade broken electronics and 9mm rounds with them? I mean, we'll take that stuff. We need scrap and spare parts. If the outside-people come here, they're either going to kill you or make you Muslim. We're not here to preach, and I know you don't want to hear it. But that's the way it is." **** Riding in rugged off-road vehicles, the Dominion patrol was soon out of supplies and they packed up and left with less ceremony than when they arrived. Major General Charles Brudenell was notified, and brought his men back into town...
Night passed without incident, and day came. And day went. The town was still empty, and an empty town held no clues. Until (and unless) whoever had left came back, it was an unsatisfying mystery. ****
Moments after radioing for airsupport, the Dominion forces radioed the defenders of Pavlodar. "Your occupation of this city is illegal. Stand down immediately or we turn this city into a meat grinder. You don't want to die. I don't want to order my men to die. But we will die for our country. I know you must have called in for reinforcements, so unless I see white flags in the next twenty seconds, the killing is going to begin and it's not going to stop until we have our city back." As the message was broadcast, the Dominion soldiers began their march on the city. The Dominion troops were firmly within range of the ICON artillery, and was coming into range of the numerous mortars employed by the city's locals. If the ICON forces were to protect the city, now was the time to start thinning out the Dominion numbers. |

Major General Brudenell and the men returned to the village and finished handing out what aid they had brought with them as a peace offering to the people. While the men did that the Major General debrief the men he'd left in the village. What they told their commanding officer was certainly interesting information, especially the officer who'd risked his life to get closer and talking one on one with the enemy. "Taking men who asked to enlist" said the Major General to himself. "Good job men" he said saluting them soldiers and then ordering them back into the unit. When the last of the aid had been distributed, the Major General order the men out of the city. Before his own jeep left, the Major General had one last conversation with Pastor Shin. He asked the priest if the Dominion came often to the village and he explained that they did indeed come often when they had things to trade. Pleased with the answer, the Major General promised to return again with more aid in the coming days. Looking at his watch, he noted the time and then ordered the jeep forward for the trip back. In a few hours the Major General was back in Astana and before long was in General Campbell's office. Brudenell told the General of what they'd learned in Zhezkaghan and even General Campbell was surprised with what was learned. Saluting the English officer, he excused himself and had Brudenell leave. A Private and secure via conference with Atlanta was made.... ---------------------------------------------------------------- "We've gotten a spy in their ranks before, need I remind everyone of Operation: Persius and the MJOLNIR II satellite facility." said NID Director: Robert White. "We know a good deal of how these people operate because of Agent 6's work on that project. though we lost her to the war, what she did for the Confederacy will never be forgotten." "Yes, see there's the key word...lost" said Secretary Holliday. "The Defense Department does like the odds of success for this type of operation. Even if they get in, getting intel back will be difficult if not impossible and if the agent is caught, we'd very well have a shit storm on our hands." Vice President Price started tapping his finger on the table. "Secretary Holliday, I'll note your displeasure with the operation to President Montgomery" said Price. "However, I'm going to have to give the green light on this operation. We need to know everything we can about the Dominion in Kazakhstan and if we can get an agent into the group that can get deep intel, then we must try." "I'll have a agent on the ground within days" said Director White --------------------------------------- A few days later... Just as Major General had promised, he and his men had returned from Astana with more food, blankets, and medical supplies. They took a more cautious approach to Zhezkaghan than they had the first time they'd arrived. Ensuring the Dominion was not in the city, they entered down the same street they had before. The people again lined the streets looking for whatever handouts the ICON soldiers had brought to give to the people freely. The Major General order for the men to begin distributing the supplies while he and another man walked up to a man who had been with Pastor Shin the first time ICON arrived. "I'd like to speak with the Pastor" said Brudenell. "I have someone I'd like to leave here to meet with the Dominion..." _________________________________________________________________________________ [/b]
The ICON commander decided to light the field with their artillery, trying to thin out the Dominion ranks as much as they could. Without great effort, artillery fire began raining down onto the Dominion troops marching towards the city. They're reaction was generic to the situation and the ICON commander could not easily tell whether or not the Dominion knew that an ICON presence was in the city. Obviously if they hadn't know before they certainly knew now that they were facing much more than just the citizens of Pavlodar. Still unless ICON artillery could thin out the numbers of the enemy, it really wouldn't make much of a difference. Posted Image As the battle began to rage in Pavlodar, 6 Apache attack helicopters were being dispatched to that location. It was ICON's hope that they would be able to hit any key targets that would prove to make the battle more difficult for soldiers on the ground, including tanks and other heavy vehicles. At last check they were only about 5 minutes out from the battlefield, making good time to the city of Pavlodar. Edited by NRE, Feb 13 2010, 09:34 PM.

The ICON artillery was devastating. The Nagians had been prepared for some bombardment, attacking along a wide front and providing covering fire by weight of numbers, but the ICON forces had a clear advantage that they were pressing. Despite the massacre, the Dominion tide continued to push forwards, seemingly oblivious to causalities. While any sane force would have broken, the Nagians pushed on into the teeth of the enemy forces, fanning out to spread across an even wider front in an attempt to deny the enemy artillery. Even so, it looked like the Nagian's would be outnumbered by the time they reached the city. ICON airsupport swooped down on the Dominion's advanced tanks, striking with lethal effectiveness. But as they manoeuvred to attack the rearguard of big guns that made up the Dominion artillery, a hellstorm of anti-aircraft fire greeted them. The Nagian Ifrared and CLOS weapons were cutting edge before the fall of Zapht, and even though they lacked effectiveness when faced with high-altitude targets (like bombers), the first salvo was enough to force the ICON airsupport to disengage. The Nagian forces were using the broken terrain and their wide deployment to protect their most valuable assets as they advanced, making it almost impossible for the choppers to find a firing solution. |

The artillery continued to fire on the enemy, some guns falling silent for a few minutes as they were repositioned in an attempt to keep on the heals of the enemy as they themselves continually made changes in their advance. It was a win-lose tactic as sometimes the artillery movement was beneficial and sometimes it was not. The Nagians were continuing to gain ground as they moved ever closer towards the city. Snipers were now employed to take out whatever they could to slow the advance. Still ICON knew it would need help and quickly requests were radioed back to Astana for reinforcements. General Campbell spared no time in drumming up a large contingent of ICON soldiers, several division deep, as well as tanks and artillery to send to Pavlodar. Problem was, moving the men, tanks, and guns was going to take time, especially across the distance that they would have to cross. He held out hope that ICON forces in the city could hold off the enemy until the help could arrive. He order three B-2 Spirit Bombers as well as a escort of 6 f-35's. They would support artillery efforts to weed out the enemy as best they could and slow the advance so that ground reinforcements could make it on time. The ground forces would take several hours to make their trip, the aircraft would be in the area shortly. ICON forces in Pavlodar were sent orders to hold their own at all costs until reinforcements arrived. |

It seemed that the Dominion was not entirely unprepared for reinforcements from Astana. IEDS and hidden snipers lined the direct routes between Astana and Pavlodar, designed to troublesomely slow any aid that ICON could send. But these diversions could do nothing against the Confederate bombers, which rained destruction on the Dominion forces with impunity. The intense fire had shattered the Dominion lines and wrecked telling causalities. Already half the Dominion force had been destroyed, and yet still the Dominion forces pushed forward. Squad tactics taking precedence over formation movements. The Dominion soldiers were utterly unshakable in the face of death: fighting with a deadly conviction that defied the traditional Nagian tactics of intellectual warfare. The most advanced Nagians were reaching the boarders of the city, even as the Confederate bombers were cutting swathes out of the Dominion lines. **** OOC: Anyone still following this? I plan to advance some of the plot lines but don't want to step on any toes. I'll be giving Ulgania and Atticus an opening to post seeing as you guys haven't said anything in a while, and I want to move things forward in Astana and Zhezkaghan. Just need some time to write up. |

Pieter, having moved through the desert for quite some time on his own now, was picked up by a Dominion patrol. A brash looking man, wearing a uniform a size too large for him, but holding his automatic rifle as though it was a lover approached Pieter, a few steps in front of the patrol that he seemed to be leading. Having been punched harder than he had expected in the face, he spat blood on the ground. "Be careful what you wish for. My name is Pieter. I have butchered communists and Ulganians alike. I'm more valuable to you alive than dead." "You look like an Ulganian." "It's because I am. I am what I am, and I will be what I will. Right now, I can tell you that you cannot win, not without help. Right now I need to, no, I demand to see whoever your commanding officer is." |

Troops within Pavlodar had been, since the enemy began advancing, preparing the troops and citizens within the city walls for a battle in their streets. While the Nagains grew closer, ICON soldiers were pulling away those citizens that showed even an ounce of decent shooting ability and instead perching them into high rooftop locations. Digging into old Dominions weapons, they dusted off several sniper riffles and armed these newly inducted snipers with enough ammo to last a few hours. Most of the snipers were made of citizens as the more experienced ICON soldiers would be needed in the streets. They convince the leaders to clear out the parts of the City the Dominion would be hitting first once they made it through, getting the people back into the bunker they'd had called home for months before. Traps were laid throughout the city and soldiers took their time remembering them. Streets were label with graffiti so that the ICON troops new which ones were safe and which were not. A for safe, B for trap was what many of the soldiers had to keep reminding themselves as they rushed to get to their positions. A small few artillery went silent, as troops brought the cannons straight forward and hidden around sharp corners. When the unlucky Nagian bastards came around they'd certainly be getting more than what they'd be bargaining for. Digging for a long fight, many of the ICON soldiers reassured those citizens fighting along side them that they were going to die first before letting the city fall. What reassurance this really was was hard to tell but at least for their part they felt better having said it. Despite heavy annoyances by IED's and snipers, ICON reinforcements were a mere hour away by the time the first Nagain wave stepped into the city limits and gunfire began echoing through the streets. If they could just hold off for one hour....just one hour.
No problems here. |
