So. I have money. I wish to buy a DS, because I've never owned a handheld console and both Tom and Andy have one. Also maybe because I want to play Pokémon for real for once, but that's neither here nor there. So: recommend me some GBA and DS games, so that I may justify the purchase of a ninety quid piece of electronics and plastic, or whatever. Since I'm not getting a DSi. Because I want the DS Lite. I figure if I can find maybe eight or ten games that I'd enjoy (ideally not ALL of them Pokémon or Final Fantasy games) it'd be a worthwhile investment. Or something like that. And I can pick up an R4 plus card for 20 quid, which is good because I have no memory cards. |

1. Pokemon Platinum. I can give you my ID if you get it :) 2. GTA China Town - fun fun fun 3. Hourglass of Time or something like that - Zelda game. borrowed it from a friend, had a lot of fun with it for a good 20 hours. Well-made. 4. N+ - also lots of fun. 5. Advance Wars - AWESOME turn-based strategy game. no equal on the handheld. 6. The World Ends With You was epic 7. Mario Kart - only if your friends have it too. 8. Scribblenauts - no explanation needed. Those are the titles I would say you MUST own. Other good ones are the Henry Hatsworth games. |

Here's some gems that I can email you (the number is the release number, higher numbers are more recent games): 0037 - Super Mario 64 DS - Remember Super Mario 64? Here it is on the DS. Good if you like retro games. 0076 - Star Wars Episode III - Revenge Of The Sith - A completely average side-on Star Wars game with an amazing multiplayer dogfight mode (pit the Millennium Falcon against a Jedi Starfighter) 0127 - Phoenix Wright - Ace Attorney - Visual novel style game. Solve crimes. Shout "OBJECTION" into your DS. Priceless. 0201 - Mario Kart DS 0238 - 4 in 1-Monopoly & Boggle & Yahtzee and Battleship - Faithful recreations of the board games, only without all the fiddly pieces to lose and massive box to store. 0413 - Tetris DS 0431 - Metroid Prime Hunters - An adequate addition to the Metroid Prime Games. Decent multiplayer. 0457 - Dr Kawashima's Brain Training 1456 - The Legend of Zelda - Phantom Hourglass - A great Zelda game. Sequal to the Wind Waker. Its main selling point is that it uses every feature of the DS - the touch screen, the mic, every button is mapped, you even use the hinge! 1617 - Call Of Duty 4 - A pretty standard shooter. Not a patch on real CoD. 2002 - Professor Layton And The Curious Village - It's really easy, but it's pretty fun. The only lame part is the pixel hunt for clue coins - but you won't need clue coins so... 2308 - Myst - It's Myst. What more do you want from me? 2437 - Sid Meiers Civilization Revolution - Love Civ? Then you'll like it on the DS. 2623 - Final Fantasy IV 2782 - Rock Revolution - A band rhythm game on the DS. Let's you sing. 2982 - Metal Slug 7 - One of the best run and guns of all time. 3212 - 100 Classic Book Collection - If you like classic books, it's nice to have them around to read. Wish I had it in school when we were reading Frankenstein. 3541 - Pokemon Platinum - Gold and Silver are coming out soon. The Guitar Hero On Tour (and Modern Hits & Decades) games are worth a look if you like Guitar Hero. You'd need to actually buy one of the games for the guitar grip though. Some Home Brew worth a look includes: Moonshell - Usually comes bundled with most cards. It's an excellent media player (be sure to download SUPER (Simplified Universal Player Encoder & Renderer) so you can put your movies in NDS format and play them where-ever you want. DS Organise - Media player, calendar, notepad, web-browser etc. I like it. Dark Star - A note taking program with extras. Looks cool, haven't used it yet. WinDS - A common API that provides an expandable library of graphic controls for developing and running other homebrew applications. Bible Black DS, Fatal Relations DS, and other unofficial ports as well! That's everything I can think of right now... might have to come back to this thread after playing some DS. |

I've been thinking about dusting my DS off. SM64 DS was really good, and so was MarioKart. I'm awful at Advance Wars and Metroid, but people love them both. Well, I'm better at the Metroid multiplayer, which is easily the funnest part. Scribblenauts and Professor Layton sound fun, and I'll definitely pick up Platinum if I do decide to pull it back out. Or maybe I'll just get a DS Lite, my old 1st-gen is in pretty crappy shape. Edited by Abnar, Oct 16 2009, 12:55 PM.

Advance Wars. Knew I was forgetting something big. Hell, all the FF games are pretty decent. Well I & II, II IV, V, VI and Revenant Wings aren't bad. |

ADDENDUM: Given that apparently it's impossible to use GBA roms on a slot 1 flashcard... well, what would be better? Just buy a slot 2 flashcard as well, or use the slot2 and get the doohickey that lets you play stuff as if it were slot 1? See? I'm learning the lingo like a motherfucking champ. I missed out on quite a lot of things. I HOPE TO RECTIFY THESE IN THE FOLLOWING MONTHS MAYBE. Although that may be hard since odds are Advance games are basically old tech nowadays. |

There are some really awesome GBA games, among them Golden Sun and its sequel - superb RPGs. And of course all the SNES Mario games were re-released for the GBA. |

You can get GBA games. No problem. If you're going to get a slot 2, get one that has extra RAM (so you can use the official web browser) and rumble (for coolness). And you'll want to use FlashMe. Personally, I'd go for both if you really want to play GBA games. Simply because having the extra RAM and rumble would be useful and slot 2 cards tend to dick up if you're trying to run an app from them and use the RAM. However, most GBA games suck or have better sequels on the DS. I'd start with the slot-1 card and go from there. The R4 is the lowest tech slot-1 device going that actually works. It's not a big investment. When you start considering a second device then your prices are going up and you find yourself thinking "If only I'd just used all this money to buy an Acecard RPG..." **** If you want a list of GBA games, then off the top of my head... GS2 was actually, in my opinion, better than the first. But don't play it without having played the first one. |

Yeah, I meant to add the "two". I put "Golden Sun" and "Breath of Fire" remembering them to be my favourite GBA games. But Breath of Fire 2 and Golden Sun 2 are my the games I was thinking of. Breath of Fire 2 can be played quite comfortably without playing the first game though. |

I can probably pick up an Acekard 2 for about the same price as the R4, assuming I can find a cheap-ish microSD card. I'd rather get the RPG though just for the ease that built in memory provides, but I'm not fussy. And I can't find anywhere that actually sells it. What do ya think? Or maybe I'm barking up the wrong tree and a different card'd be better? I don't know. HENCE WHY I ASK THESE QUESTIONS OF MINE. And I figured that it'd probably be easier just buying old GBA games on eBay for pittance for now, like I did with Metal Gear Solid a month back. |

I have an R4. Works fine. Most of the places that sell RPGs are based in Europe or the States. Postage from Europe is cheaper... but, it's still pretty pricey. The R4 works. It's just low tech. And you will find yourself wishing that you could use SDHC cards - and you might eventually want the cool stuff that the RPG does. The Acecard 2 (or maybe try looking for an M3) should do you just fine. Edited by Nag Ehgoeg, Oct 19 2009, 02:54 PM.

I now hold, in my hands, a white DS Lite. And some games. And an Acekard. Still waiting on a few bits and pieces, but now I MUST BE THE VERY BEST. |

Eh, after transport costs it wouldn't be worth it. Besides, everyone's inbred here. Rather not bang a chick with webbed hands and feet. |
