I'm still a student, so I could get it for USD 30 from Lans' link. For the techier people here: Does having a 64 bit processer mean that I can run the 64 bit operating system, or do I have to check any other specs? I want to know for certain before I contact customer service and see about changing my order. |

Although the processor is all you need, some other parts may be incompatible. |

Well do you have any idea what I should look for? I don't want to change my order from 32 bit to 64 bit and realize that I accidentally screwed myself  |

Unless you're doing stuff that isn't monotonous, the most you'll see is faster boot-up speeds when you turn your computer on. Edit: Eh... I replied to an earlier post before reading the rest of the topic. I should try posting after getting more sleep  Edited by Ulgania, Oct 14 2009, 10:31 PM.

Um, thanks, but I don't really see how that addresses my question. Just to be clear, I know I want to make the switch; I'm just trying to make sure everything is compatible, and I want to know what to look for other than the processor. |

Best thing to do is ask the manufacturer. Tech support sucks, but they'll know for sure. |

So should I buy Windows 7 64-bit and back up all of my important stuff before I try to install it? |

This worked. They cancelled my order and told me I could make a new one. |

You guys are still overpaying. I had a $19 deal through ACM. I still saved a ton of money  |

Is that deal still available? If so, then yes, I would be overpaying, and you should remedy the situation by providing me with a link :D |

Doubtful, unless you're a Computer Science major at university. Microsoft practically throws sofware at us. =) However, if any of you folks want a Microsoft product that I'm not using, I'd be happy to provide a download link. I've currently used up my downloads of Visual Studio 2008 and its service pack, Windows Vista Business 64-bit, and Windows 7 64-bit. Almost anything else, though, is doable. |

While I may be a bit biased toward Mac OS X, I have gotten my hands dirty with Windows Vista x64 and Windows 7 x32. My MacBook Pro got taken from me, and I had to live with 3 months of Vista/Win7, and I can share some of the experiences: To quote the great George Carlin, Windows handles 64 bit like old people fuck--slow and sloppy. When I had Vista x64 installed on my girlfriend's laptop, none of my 32-bit programs worked correctly. Everything was either slow, or would crash. iTunes worked, but took forever to start up. Many things took an eternity to work. Many apps were 32-bit, and bogged the computer down to the point where it was unusable. Reinstalling Vista did nothing. So, I installed 7 x32, and everything went faster. Everything worked fine, and everything was fast again. Until Vista/7 gets to the point where it can handle 64-bit like Mac OS X can (seamlessly and transparently) then I'm going to recommend sticking to 32-bit Windows. Too many applications out there that don't even take advantage of the benefits of 64-bit, anyway. |

It sounds like you tried Vista in 64 bit and 7 in 32 bit. Doesn't that mean you don't actually know how Microsoft currently is handling 64 bit, since you didn't try 7 in 64 bit to compare to Vista in 64 bit? |

Did some fooling around with my laptop last night. I added more RAM than my 32 bit Vista Ultimate installation knew what to do with. I replaced my hard drive with a faster and bigger one. I did a clean install on the new drive with 64 bit 7 Pro. Then I went out to drink, and spent some time this morning testing out applications, installing things, and restoring my backed up data. I'm pretty pleased with the new system - I never had the murder-boner for Vista that some people had, but 7 feels like what Vista was supposed to be, if that makes any sense. It makes me happy and lowers my stress levels. I will do more extensive testing as I get the chance :D |

This seems to be a very common opinion. I'm not upgrading to 7 until Christmas, at least, so I can't express one of my own at present. |

Gotcha. Well, I hope it delights you as much as it delights me (and hopefully in a week or two I don't run into some horrible bug that changes my experience completely - fingers crossed). Generally Microsoft was able to find functioning 7-compatible, 64-bit drivers for my hardware. There were only a handful of devices where 7 could not identify my device, or where they assigned a generic driver (not a big deal with my Logitech mouse, where the generic driver could handle most of the special functions; much bigger deal when it assigned a Generic VGA adaptor driver to my NVidia DirectX10 enabled Card), but in that small handful of cases, I could easily find drivers from HP (my OEM) or the individual hardware manufacturers. So drivers were not a problem here. Applications and restoring my data were also relatively simple processes. All in all, a smooth transition. |

Nice. I didn't do this beta, because I had experienced the Vista beta (no hormonal surges there - more like war stories). |

Yeah, I have the release candidate Microsoft handed out to everyone and their mother awhile back and I've been pretty satisfied with it. I've had far more problems with graphics drivers recently than I have with the OS itself. I can use this version until sometime in March, but apparently Windows 7 Ultimate will be able through the college for something like $30. It's too good an offer to pass up. I'd be surprised if other colleges weren't offering the same deal, so it's probably worth looking into. |
